OUR ARTS PHILOSOPHY T
he arts at The Galloway School are grounded in the educational philosophy of the school and offer experiences in music, dance, theatre, technical theatre and visual arts that kindle self-awareness, intellectual curiosity, and creative expression. The gifted faculty of teaching artists is dedicated to teaching mastery of their craft to students by developing skills and cultural literacy. They work independently, as well as in collaboration with classroom teachers and visiting artists, to integrate the joy of the creative process across the learning continuum in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative and experiential educational environment. Classes are
deliberately designed to engage students at all skill levels from introductory to advanced, including independent studies and AP courses. Performance opportunities abound for students interested in participating in our no-cut dance, theatre and music ensembles. While many of our graduates do go on to pursue the arts beyond Galloway, it is our hope that as Galloway students learn to generate, construct and evaluate work in the arts discipline/s of their choice, they will develop new understandings in self-expression, communication and empathy that will serve them well throughout life in whatever profession they pursue.
Dance
Visual Arts
Deeply grounded in Galloway’s philosophy, the dynamic dance program invites all students to experience the form and the craft of dance. Based on the National Standards for Dance Education, the program allows all students from preschool through grade 12 to discover and explore concepts related to space, time, energy, relationships and self through movement in the dance studio and in dance integrated units in their classrooms.
Nurturing innate creativity while guiding students in the rigorous cognition necessary to produce a work of art, Galloway’s visual arts program encourages all students to stretch their thinking and participate in the creative process. Students from preschool through grade 12 work in a variety of 2D and 3D art forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and ceramics.
Theatre
Music Galloway’s creative music program immerses students in a world of sound that includes a variety of musical styles across cultures and historical periods. The curriculum builds students’ musical skills on the instrument/s of their choice while embracing creative process through projects and repertoire based on individual student interests. Original student compositions are nurtured in the music classroom and celebrated and shared on and off stage and in the recording studio.
Each student’s individual skills and gifts are embraced by Galloway’s theatre and technical theatre programs, while simultaneously building community and ensemble. Led by a team of professional theatre artists, students discover their own voices and encourage one another to let their voices be heard as they grow in empathy and perspective. Galloway acting students discover and explore concepts related to plot, character, language, process, and product in dramatic presentations in the classroom and on the stage. Students involved in technical theatre gain hands-on knowledge and skills in visual arts, technology, industrial arts, design, architecture and theatre.
