Certified Nurse Aide

CNA

Train to become a Certified Nurse Aid (CNA) in a long-term care facility. Course topics include residents’ rights, communication, safety observation, reporting and basic comfort and care. Students who successfully complete this program earn a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award, and start on the pathway to earn a level one certification as a Patient Care Tech. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor and may need to be simulated due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Students must complete our healthcare program requirements prior to enrolling. Students must wear burgundy scrubs with student patches and have a watch with a second hand. The student is responsible for transportation to and from the clinical sites. Students are responsible for certification testing with Prometric and paying testing fees online. This is separate from tuition; the instructor will schedule testing dates for the class. The program is eligible for TPEG and a payment plan.

Get started as an entry-level phlebotomist and prepare for your certification exam with the National Healthcare Association (NHA). Study the skills used in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods. Study the heart’s anatomy, function and how it produces electricity and how one records this electricity with the EKG and telemetry monitor. This course addresses the electrical-cardio changes of commonly seen diseases and heart rhythm disturbances. Successful completion should prepare students for the NHA certification exam and introduce them to the skills necessary for employment in the field.

As the elderly population increases, healthcare facilities and hospitals have a great demand for Medical Assistants. Galveston College provides CPR training for individuals, companies, groups and organizations with flexible scheduling. Students are trained by our American Heart Association Instructors to help infants as well as adults in an emergency situation. Classes run for 4.5 hours and a textbook is included. Each class $66

This program meets the requirements of individuals planning to take the MBLEX exam and State Jurisprudence Examination for state licensing put forth by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and presents material in business practices and ethics, anatomy and physiology, health and hygiene, chair massage, pathology, hydrotherapy, kinesiology, history of massage, body mechanics, massage techniques and rehabilitative aspects of massage. Additionally, students will have a practice internship on proper massage protocol for various populations.

This program runs over three semesters and combines classroom lecture with a “hands-on” skills laboratory setting, including internship. It meets the criteria for a State Recognized Level One Certificate of Completion. Students who successfully complete the course should be prepared to take the (TDLR) exam for licensure as a massage therapist in the state of Texas. This program is eligible for TPEG funds and payment plans.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO STUDENTS:

Additional supplies such as a massage table, sheets, towels, textbooks, massage oils, and linens must be purchased separately. Students are required to have these PRIOR TO INTERNSHIP. Background check and registration with the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) are an additional cost, and students should plan on taking the MBLEX prior to starting internship hours. Students must meet the healthcare program requirements listed on our website at least one week prior to class starting. This includes a criminal background check and HIPPA training, as well as immunizations. Please be advised that depending on your record, a criminal conviction may prevent you from licensure by the state of Texas for this program. If you have a question about your background and licensure, please speak with the program coordinator. You also have the right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from the applicable licensing agency.

Computer Support Technician

This program explores the PC system from software, hardware and operating system points of view. Software topics include client/server operating systems and installation, as well as licensing software application. The knowledge integrates with fundamental customer support concepts for the operation of a help desk or call center. Students will need to purchase textbooks and pay for the exam. Galveston College has partnered with the Cisco Networking Academy to provide an information technology skills and career building development program that provides Cisco approved learning experienced. The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Routing and Switching Pathway is a series of four courses leading students to CCENT and CCNA certifications, using hands-on skills applicable to a career in networking. Students may also choose to move to the CCNA Security pathway after the completion of the first two classes.

Basic Water Works Operation

This course includes instruction in the production, treatment and distribution of potable water. Upon successful completion of Basic Water Works Operations training, participants will have exposure to techniques that will allow for the proper operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems. The course tuition includes one attempt at the state certification examination Class D License* through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Basic Wastewater Operations

This course in wastewater collection and treatment includes a brief overview of the water cycle. Topics include: activated sludge process; alternative and advanced treatment; characteristics of wastewater; flow measurements; lift (pumping) stations; ponds, disinfection and safety procedures; preliminary treatment; records and reports; sedimentation and fixed-film processes collection systems; biological treatment of wastewater; goals of wastewater treatment; the law and sources of pretreatment of domestic wastes; water cycle and water reuse. Also included are Texas’ rules and regulations for licensing of wastewater system operators. The course tuition includes one attempt a the state certification examination Class D License* through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Pipefitting Core and Level I

Automotive Diesel Technician TWO-SEMESTER PROGRAM

The Galveston College program, which is comprised of two Occupational Skills awards which combine for a Level One Certification, is taught at the Ball High School automotive and diesel technology lab and is open to interested students of all ages. Students who complete both courses of Diesel Engine Testing and Repair and both courses in Automotive Climate Controls earn a Level One Certification from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Diesel Engine Testing and Repair II

This high demand career training provides instruction in engine measuring tools, and the principles of operation for major engine components. Students are briefed on the materials needed to take the ASE test of Diesel Engines. Included in the course is the ASE- Entry level Medium/Heavy Truck Diesel Engines exam. Students must complete both courses to be awarded an Occupational Skills Certificate.

EPA Testing ONE DAY CLASS

An EPA certification is official recognition by the EPA that a technician is knowledgeable about the laws and regulations surrounding the use and handling of ozone-depleteing substances, or ODS, such as refrigerants. This course will review laws and regulations, and the exam will follow the review.

This one-day class will be scheduled on a Saturday. Included in the course: book, review, exam and lunch.

The Galveston College Community Chorale is a non-auditioned organization of singers. The chorale performs at least three concerts a year in the community with repertoire ranging from classical sacred and secular music of the great composers to modern day contemporary music. Digital Photography and Photo Editing

Get the most out of your camera! Discover how to improve your photos with the technical and artistic basics of digital photography. Explore the basics of taking photos and critique them in a friendly and collaborative environment. Topics include camera settings, basic compositions and different types of photography.

Using photos students take for the class, basic photo editing techniques are reviewed using Photoshop. Some techniques covered include enhancing colors, fixing blemishes and “digital plastic surgery.” This class is for the novice photographer. Bring your digital SLR camera with flash and interchangeable lenses and be comfortable using a computer. Cost: $149

Drawing I

This beginning class is for those students who want to understand the underlying components that occur in every drawing. Students will learn a variety of techniques using a variety or drawing materials and tools. Emphasis is placed on visual analysis, structural sketches, quick sketches, layering and long drawings on good paper. Students start out creating small, quick drawings from observations of small basic environments and then move to larger more complicated illusionary space. Class runs simultaneously with academic Drawing course. *A senior citizen discount is available. Cost: $460 *

Design I

This beginning art class is for those students who want to understand the function of the various components in a work of art. Students will make graphite drawings that emphasize each of the visual elements, such as line, shape, texture, value and form in combination with the principles of design. Improved artistic creativity of individual art works is the goal. Class runs simultaneously with academic Design course.

This class is for those students that have always wanted to enjoy making paintings and for those that want to learn how to develop their artistic skills by improving their understanding of the painting medium. Students start by making paintings of basic observed compositions. Students learn steps that improve their work over time as they work toward making more complex paintings. Emphasis is placed on learning to see with greater clarity what is happening in the works students create.
