Welcome! Directory

On behalf of Galveston College, it’s our pleasure to welcome you to another exciting season of Whitecaps Softball! Last year, our softball team had an unforgettable season filled with several milestones, which included conference and regional championships, a trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship in Oxford, Alabama, and a season-ending No. 5 ranking in the nation.

These achievements are a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes and coaches, and we are looking forward to building on that momentum this season.

At Galveston College, we take great pride in the success of our student-athletes and their role as ambassadors of our institution and community. This season, we aim to not only compete at the highest level but also continue to uphold our strong tradition of academic success and player development.

We are grateful for the support of our fans, families, and community partners who help make this program possible. Your support fuels our team and inspires our players to represent Galveston College and our community with pride.

Thank you for joining us this season. Let’s come together to continue to support our Whitecaps as we strive for excellence on and off the field.

Go Whitecaps!

2024 in Review

Galveston College finishes No. 5 in the nation

The 2024 edition of the Galveston College Whitecaps softball team captivated Galveston Island and the campus community last season with a phenomenal National Junior College Athletic Association Division I World Series run that won’t soon be forgotten and which was capped off with a No. 5 ranking in the nation.

The Whitecaps finished the regular season with a 40-13 record, 18-6 in conference, a Top 20 ranking, a share of the Region 14 South Conference title and the conference’s No. 1 seed in the regional tournament.

GC concluded the regular season by winning nine of their last 10 games, including a sweep of San Jacinto College-South, 13-3 and 14-6, in the season-finale on April 30 to claim a share of the conference crown. GC also won the conference title in 2023.

In the Region 14 Tournament, the Whitecaps opened with a 3-0 victory over Tyler Junior College and a 7-1 win over Paris Junior College. This set the stage for a rematch against conference rival and co-champion, San Jacinto CollegeSouth.

Although GC had a commanding 18-run lead by the fifth inning, there was no run rule for the championship game and seven complete innings had to be played.

With the regional tournament victory, the Whitecaps advanced as the No. 7 seed of the World Series tournament, played at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.

GC began its quest for a national title with a 3-2 victory over Walters State Community College on May 20, but fell to Indian River State College on May 22.

In the final and decisive game, played on May 7, GC starting pitcher Jenna Johnston tossed a three-hitter and the Whitecaps’ offense hit five home runs to rout the Ravens, 19-1, and win the NJCAA Division I Region 14 Tournament championship, and earn a bid to the National Championship.

GC scored 11 unanswered runs in the first three innings of the regional tournament title game against SJCS and added eight runs in the fourth and fifth frames to soundly defeat the host team and lift the regional crown.

2024 South Conference

Facing elimination, the Whitecaps faced a familiar foe in SJCS on May 22. After staking the Ravens a 2-0 lead in the first inning, GC responded with three runs in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead, which it never relinquished after Johnston settled down and pitched six straight innings of shutout ball.

The Whitecaps’ come-frombehind heroics continued the next day as they rallied from a 1-0 deficit with runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat Florida Southwestern State College, 2-1. GC standout hurler Johnston allowed only one run in eight innings on the way to her 28th victory of the season.

GC’s incredible national title run came to an end on May 23 when the Whitecaps fell to Northwest Florida State College, 10-1, in their fifth game of the tournament.

The Whitecaps ended up going five rounds deep into the World Series and posted a 3-2 record with incredible displays of will, grit, determination, fundamental play and a never-saydie attitude that propelled them within three games of the championship game and into the hearts of the community.

2025 Preview

Whitecaps reload for another championship quest

The Galveston College Whitecaps Softball team has a clear goal this season: repeat as the Region 14 South Conference and Region 14 champions, and earn another trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament.

The Whitecaps enter the 2025 season as the No. 6-ranked team in the nation, according to the NJCAA preseason poll released on Jan. 21. GC finished last season with a 46-15 record and a fifth-place finish at the 2024 NJCAA Softball National Tournament at Oxford, Alabama.

“We feel that this year’s team is prepared to step on the field and be very competitive,” said GC Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Kelly Raines. “After a tough fall schedule where we played highly competitive select teams as well as NCAA Division I, II and III programs, the team is prepared for what will be a tough non-conference and conference schedule. The goal again is to win both the conference and regional championships while earning a trip to the 2025 NJCAA National Tournament in Yuma, Arizona.”

Coach Raines, who was named the 2024 Mid-South A District Coach of the Year, returns for her fourth season at the helm of the Whitecaps. She has continued her winning ways at GC after

having previously built a highly successful softball program at Howard College. Assisting Raines is Whitecaps Assistant Coach, Rome McNary, who returns for his third season.

The Whitecaps will return nine sophomores from last year’s regional championship team. GC’s squad will be bolstered by three sophomores who transferred to the college this year and 13 freshmen entering the program this season. The Whitecaps roster will consist of players from California, Oklahoma, Canada and Texas.

“We believe that we have recruited student-athletes that will take care of business in the classroom and will play the game the right way,” said Raines. “We have a great group of sophomores that have shown all the leadership qualities necessary to lead our freshman in the right direction. They have led by example with their work ethic in the classroom and on the field. We believe this group of players can be a very special team and we’re looking forward to working with these ladies this season, and hope to continue our success from the previous seasons.”

The 2024-2025 Whitecaps Softball team competed in 11 fall doubleheader scrimmages and will compete in 52 games during the 2025 season. The 2025 Region 14 Regional Tournament will be held at Bossier Parish Community College in Bossier City, Louisiana from May 3-6. This season’s NJCAA Softball National Tournament will be held in Yuma, Arizona from May 19-24.
