EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WELCOME Welcome to GAMA Expo 2020! I want to begin by thanking our Board of Directors, GRD Officers, sponsors, presenters, and volunteers for all their hard work to bring this conference to fruition. Each of them has joined with the GAMA staff to make sure our attendees have the best trade show yet. You will notice several changes this year. After consultation with members and key volunteers, we wanted to freshen up the GAMA brand to be relevant to our members. Along with that came a decision to rename the show to GAMA Expo with a new logo and increased opportunities for members to interact and network. Some new features include a Kick-Off Luncheon (p. 19) when we will honor Rick Loomis and his contributions to our industry with the presentation of the first Rick Loomis Service Award. This award will be presented to an individual who has strived to live up to his sense of service for the hobby games industry. The luncheon will also feature a keynote presentation by Bob Phibbs, The Retail Doctor®, sponsored by Wizards of the Coast. Other additions include a new Kick-Off Party on Sunday (p. 25), moving the GRD dinner/elections to Monday (p. 85) to allow us to better accommodate our growing number of exhibitors, an increase of Exhibit Hall hours (p. 116-117) to provide more time to meet with exhibitors, the International Members breakfast on Thursday (p. 33), and the Origins Awards Showcase (p. 125) when we will announce and demo the 2020 nominees so our retailer members can better promote and sell them in their stores. On behalf of the GAMA team, I welcome you to Reno and hope you have a great week at the show! John Stacy GAMA Executive Director
PRESIDENT WELCOME Welcome to the 2020 edition of GAMA Expo, formerly known as the “GAMA Trade Show.” This year’s show will be the biggest and the best we have seen, with a new name, a new trade dress, a new website, etc. This is the same old formula you came to love over the years, but better and stronger, adapting to an everchanging marketplace. We are pushing the walls of the Peppermill with more than 150 exhibitors and are running four game nights based on popular demand. Some of the new features of this show include the opening Kick-Off Luncheon (p. 19) and the Origins Awards Showcase (p. 125). Don’t hesitate to talk to the members of our Board to let us know what you like (and maybe what you don’t like, if you really have to) about the new format. We are always looking for feedback. I am looking forward to seeing all of you during the show. Be excellent to each other. Stephan Brissaud GAMA President IELLO 7

DISTRIBUTOR WELCOME Greetings fellow distributors, 2019 was a very exciting year for GAMA, and 2020 is off to an amazing start. The Board has been hard at work to improve every facet of the gaming community. Last year, as a newcomer to the GAMA Board, I honestly had no idea what to expect. I can truly say it has been an amazing experience and a lot of hard work. I believe that publishers as well as retailers are beginning to grasp all the hurdles we distributors leap every day. It is times like these that demand our extra effort to facilitate the flow of product information from publisher to retailer, and for the most part, I believe the distribution tier has done a fantastic job. There are still many challenges to conquer as the landscape of the industry continues to evolve. Even though we are competitors, we tread on common ground to ensure all parties are satisfied with our efforts. To share your vision for distribution, be sure to attend the Annual Distribution Meeting (p. 29). Welcome to Gama EXPO 2020, Sito Sanchez GAMA Distributor Chair Peachstate Hobby Distribution
RETAILER WELCOME We are so excited to have you join us at GAMA Expo! This year should once again be filled with education, networking, team building, and more. If this is your first time attending, make sure you take time to look over the site book. There is so much packed in this book to help make your stay as easy and educational as possible. Retail-specific seminars (p. 45-61) start on Monday and are one of the most talked about benefits of attending GAMA Expo. Pick out seminars that you feel will take your business to the next level. Don’t miss out on game nights (p. 120-125). Use them like a speed gaming service. You will get so much more out of these events if you sample the game, take notes about ordering, and move on. Don’t get hung up on a game for a long time. Having games in front of you makes purchasing choices so much easier. Remember to network. Find out what other retailers are finding successful. Introduce yourself to publishers and distributors that you would like to get to know better. This is the best time to learn how various brands can grow and flourish in your store. Publishers want to hear from you and want to make meaningful connections. This is your time to be in front of partners without other distractions. As always, feel free to check in with myself or any of the GAMA Retail Division officers. You can find us outside of the Seminar Rooms milling about or perched at a table available to help (p. 11). Have a great and productive week! Dawn Studebaker GAMA Retailer Chair The Game Annex 9

Don’t hesitate to approach any of the GAMA Staff, Board members, and GRD officers during their “Ask a GAMA Officer” hours, Mon. to Weds. from 2-5pm at a table in the Tuscany Foyer. They are happy to answer your questions, talk about how the association can better serve you, or discuss the industry in general.
The GAMA Board of Directors is comprised of representatives from all segments of the hobby games industry. The Board meets monthly to discuss strategies for continual improvement of the association. During the show each year, the Distribution Chair is elected during the Distributor Meeting (p. 29) and the Retail Division Officers are elected during the GRD Dinner (p. 26). Board members are elected during the GAMA Annual Meeting during Origins Game Fair. The GAMA Retail Division (GRD) is responsible for organizing the slate of retailer-focused educational programming at GAMA Expo (p. 45-61) and Origins Game Fair, in addition to promoting retailer interests throughout the year. 11

MONDAY KICK-OFF LUNCHEON
12-2pm @ Tuscany Ballroom Bob Phibbs, the Retail Doctor® What if you could get more from customers you already have coming in your doors? The flawed assumption nearly every retailer makes is that they’ll edge out their online competitors by beating them on price. But with rising costs, this just isn’t sustainable. Bob outlines the startlingly simple but mostly overlooked insight that will help you to not just grow your profitability but reinvent your business as a whole. In this presentation, you’ll discover how to engage your customers, make bigger sales, and sell more often.

ATTENDEE ADVICE We asked experienced GAMA Expo attendees for their valuable advice for those who are new to the show. We think you’ll agree with all of these useful tidbits by the close of the show!
“
Make sure to sit down with different people at lunch every day and say hi and talk about how things are different and the same at each of your stores/companies.
“ “
Andrew Zorowitz (Foam Brain Games)
Be open minded on new products and don’t limit yourself on what you like. Beau Heath (Southern Hobby Supply)
Budget with the assumption that you may want to spend money on product for your store. With that in mind, look for one new product/line to introduce to your store. This is a great way to explore diversifying.
“
Bryan Winter (I’m Board! Games & Family Fun)
Bring business cards and talk to everyone you can. Think of it like you are mining for gold and you will walk away with riches.
“
Dan DiLorenzo (R&R Games)
Make sure you put your notes somewhere you’ll remember them, and follow up on them! Don’t just write stuff down, make some changes when you get back to your shop. You just learned something new implement it!
“
Dan Hoffman (Canton Games)
“ “ “ “
Introduce yourself to the GAMA Retail Division. Dave Salisbury (Fan Boy Three)
Talk to everybody. Engage in conversation. David Finn (Giga-Bites Café)
Try to pick seminars that are outside of your wheelhouse. Dee Connell (Main Street Fun & Games)
Go to every evening event. Learning games for free at the game nights before they come out WITH either creators of the games or just people who are passionate about them is so powerful.
“
Disney Court (Game Haven)
Listen to what others have to say, and NEVER be afraid of asking a question, no matter how basic or dumb you might think it is. EVERYONE was a newbie at some point, and there’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about not knowing.
“
Erik Bigglestone (Games of Berkeley)
Go to the events you feel comfortable with and push yourself to one or two you feel a bit uncomfortable with. Not everyone excels at a giant room full of loud voices, if that’s not you try finding a friend to tackle the game nights with. Jennifer Ward (Crazy Squirrel Game Store)
Meaningful follow-up matters more than even the initial convo. Daniel Zayas (LongPack Games)
24
“
Take pictures of slides at presentations when a copy isn’t provided. It’s a ton of info to digest later, and it makes it easy to revisit, even years later.
“ “ “ “
Kyle Fehr (The Game Hub)
“ “
Rhonda Becker (The Gamers Den)
Create a must see booth list so as to not be overwhelmed. Same for the Premier Presentations. Mark Owen (Sundance Cards)
You get out of the show, what you put in. Go to seminars. Spend as much time as you can at EVERY booth. Mike Paschal (Peachstate Hobby Distribution)
Create a list of your known priorities for viewing product while keeping a chunk of time free to explore and find new things. Mike Richie (Rather Dashing Games)
Don’t book every minute of every day - have some down time in your room for making notes, taking care of things back home and simply catching your breath. Take pictures when you can of the things you want to remember. Sandra Howard (The Gaming Goat)
Create a follow-up list of action items, as you go, for when you get home. Scott Gaeta (Renegade Game Studios)

THE ESSENTIAL
POWER RETAIL AWARDS WINNERS ANNOUNCED @ GRD DINNER MON, 6-8:30PM @ TUSCANY BALLROOM GAMA and the Retail Division (p. 11) take great pride in honoring the best in retail innovation and creativity with the Power Retail Awards. Each year, these awards recognize the most innovative retailers in a variety of categories. Each winner will receive a $500 credit memo from one GAMA Distributor member, be photographed during the awards ceremony, and be officially recognized on the GAMA website and in the Spring issue of Around the Table. Nominations were open Fall 2019 through January 2020. All industry professionals were able to nominate a retailer whose efforts they wanted to recognize, as long as the nominated store was an active GAMA member and was in operation for at least one year. From the nominees, the GAMA Retail Division (GRD) reviewed the submissions and voted on the most deserving nominees for each award category: Outstanding Store, Outstanding Marketing, Outstanding Organized Play, and Outstanding Store Design. Make sure to congratulate the winners if you attend their seminars or see them around the show! If you would like to get involved in the 2021 Power Retail Awards, please visit this page for more information: gama.org/page/power-retail-awards

This talk targets new publishers who are looking to learn how to be a successful publisher and existing publishers who are looking to improve their processes and fill holes in their wider knowledge.
It is no secret that the rebirth of the Board Game industry is due in part as a counter effect of a dominating digital culture. So it is not unusual to hear some players push back on the idea of hybrid games. Lucky Duck Games, the publisher behind hybrid games such as Chronicles of Crime and Time of Legends: Destinies, wants to share the many best practices their team has developed working on successful hybrid games for almost 3 years. Not all games should have digital devices attached to them and they will share a complete check-list of the dos and don’ts of the genre! 101

Better Pre-Order System 2020 brings the AEG P3 System
Over the last years, AEG has made promises to game store retailers, and we have worked hard to keep those promises. As we work to create the products that can serve as cornerstones of your game store, we will continue to find ways to build confidence in the AEG brand and provide you with games you will be proud to sell to your customers. To move into our next promise, we are introducing the AEG P3. The Priority Pre-Order Program. This program premiered in January with Mariposas. The program allows you to order before we send the game to press giving you priority on your order with regards to allocations, and ensuring your store inventory you want.

MANUFACTURING 101
TUE, 9-10AM @ LAKE VIEW
TUE, 12-2PM @ SIERRA
Brian Chellgren (Bingham Greenebaum Doll)
Aaron Witten (Witten Financial Services), Loren Coleman (Catalyst Game Labs)
This presentation is intended for new companies and individuals intending to establish a company in the game industry. An experienced attorney provides advice on establishing your company as a legal entity, funding your new business, and strategic decisions in determining where to locate your business. It is particularly directed for people working in the industry in an individual capacity (e.g., a solo design, a small solo publisher) seeking to expand and/or limit their personal liability.
From a quick tutorial on the three-tier distribution system to a worldwide overview on production, including the benefits of domestic vs foreign manufacturing, this panel touches on several topics in an effort to help new publishers avoid the most common early mistakes. This panel aligns with the manufacturing track which runs up through cocktails and dinner.
DESIGNING WITH CONSTRAINTS
HOW TO GET INTO RETAIL TUE, 10-11AM @ LAKE VIEW
TUE, 12-1PM @ LAKE VIEW
Molly Zeff (Flying Leap Games)
Julie Ahern (Greenbrier Games)
This workshop will help designers and publishers learn how to get into retail stores, and help designers decide if they want to handle their own retail sales.
When you are designing for yourself, you can let your creativity run wild. Time, components, art, defiance of physics can even be put to the side. This has produced some amazing products that “think outside the box.” But what does the added pressure of limitations do to the design process? How can you look at deadlines, specific card counts, the cost of production and maintain ingenuity and a creative spirit? This presentation is for designers looking to work with publishers for the first time, want to evaluate the success of publishing their own games, and anyone who wants to see the practicalities of a creative endeavor.
The presenter will discuss 8 ways to get into retail as a small, new publisher: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Reaching out to your first “local” stores Attending GAMA and building relationships Getting referrals Reaching retailers at cons Visiting retailers during any trip, anywhere Getting into distribution through a consolidator Cold calling Sales trips to a city/region 105
This July, award-winning designer Elizabeth Hargrave (Wingspan) takes to the air again with Mariposas! This new game has players guiding monarch butterflies along their migratory pattern from central Mexico the northeastern United States, and back again. But you must manage your butterflies well and breed along the way, as the journey requires several generations of butterflies to complete. TM
