Welcome to the 2019 Origins Game Fair! As the new Executive Director, I want to begin by thanking the Board of Directors, the hard-working GAMA staff, our sponsors, outstanding clubs, volunteers and GMs, special guests, and of course all of you who’ve come to this show and play games! I’m excited to build on the programming we’ve offered year after year and the work of those who founded Origins Game Fair 45 years ago. All your familiar favorites at Origins are back again this year, plus some new and expanded events. The Exhibit Hall is filled with more than 250 booths. Artist Alley is as strong as ever and we’ve expanded the Origins Library program with sixteen writers in a new location on the main concourse. And for the first time, we are offering the option to purchase a print or digital copy of the Anthology. We have tripled the amount of Open Gaming space to nearly 10,000 square feet and have upgraded the play experience in the Board Room with neoprene gaming mats and table coverings. In an effort to enhance the value of attending Origins, we have made most of the workshops and seminars in the Origins University complimentary, expanded the Quiet Room, added a new Family & Community Room with gaming and programming aimed towards families, and partnered with Path to Path to offer a SensoryFriendly Gaming Room for those on the autism spectrum. Guests of Honor this year include designer Elisa Teague, artist Lisa Sell, and authors Mercedes Lackey and Larry Nixon. Other special guests include actors Charisma Carpenter (Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Veronica Mars); Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Criminal Minds); Juliet Landau (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Doctor Who audiobooks); Wendy Padbury (Doctor Who and Emmerdale), Frazer Hines (Doctor Who and Emmerdale), Gleume Cosplay, and Amanda Robinson (3 Rivers Cosplay). Other notable attendees include Czech game designer Vlaada Chvátl who created Codenames and fantasy artist and illustrator Gerald Brom who is well known for his gothic artwork in role-playing games, card games, novels, and comics. The two of them will be inducted in the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design Hall of Fame on Saturday during the Origins Awards Ceremony. Again, thank you for attending Origins and helping to make it one of the largest and best gaming conventions in the world. With your help we can work together to fulfill our vision of “A game on every table, a table for every gamer.”

F.A.Q. Badge registration

Events

How do I pick up my badge? Whether you registered your badge online or on-site, you can pick up your badge at any Registration Kiosk in the North Atrium between 7am - 9pm Wednesday through Saturday and 7am 2pm on Sunday.

How do I participate in an event? You can pre-register for events online or find events with open seats on-site at any of the Event Registration Kiosks. You can also use generics if you come across an event that has open seats.

Do I have to wear my badge? Attendees are required to wear their badge at all times. Your badge grants you access into show areas. If you do not wear your badge, you will be denied entry. What are ribbons used for? Ribbons are access passes to particular convention areas or grant bargains if you are attending multiple events in the same category. Some exhibitors also hand out ribbons for free as “badge swag. These are just for fun and do not grant you additional access to convention events. What do I do if I lose my badge? You can purchase a new badge for full-price at any Registration Kiosk in the North Atrium between 7am - 9pm Wednesday through Saturday and 7am 2pm on Sunday. Where can I buy a badge for 2020? We will make an announcement as soon as badges for Origins 2020 are available for purchase. Follow us on social media (@originsgamefair) or sign up for our newsletter to stay up-to-date! http://eepurl.com/gmjjEf

8 | Origins Game Fair 2019

Why do I need event tickets? Most scheduled events have limited seating and can only accommodate a specific number of players. People who purchased event tickets will be seated first. If there are remaining seats at the start of the event, players with ribbons will be seated and then players with generics. What are generics and how do I get them? Generics are tokens that can be used to buy a seat in an event after players with event tickets have been seated. You can purchase generics for $2 each at any of the Registration Kiosks, Event Headquarters, or RPG Headquarters. Generics never expire and can be used at the show every year. However, you can also return any unused generics to the Registration Kiosk by 2pm on Sunday for a refund. How do refunds work? Refunds for event tickets are given for canceled events or up to 24 hours prior to scheduled event time. If the event is cancelled, the event ticket must have the signature from staff at the Event HQ in your area to be refunded.

Where do I go if I’m hurt? There will be two Columbus EMTs at the First Aid station located outside the Blood Drive in A114. You can also find an Origins staff member or Origins volunteer for assistance. Are wheelchairs available? The convention center has a limited number of manual wheelchairs available. They are stored at Public Safety Command. If you need a wheelchair, contact Public Safety directly at (614) 827-2547. A member of Public Safety will bring the wheelchair to you. You will be asked to exchange a photo ID for the wheelchair, which will be returned to you when you are done using the chair.

How do I become a Volunteer? We are always looking for passionate volunteers to help make Origins a great show! Learn more about volunteer opportunities at: http://bit.ly/OGFVolunteer

Show Info Awards & Honors

How do I demo for an exhibitor? Most of our exhibitors are looking for new demoers to join them at shows! If you find an exhibitor you’d like to work with, simply ask them about any opportunities they have available.

Show Info

Anti-harassment

Origins Game Fair would like to assure our attendees that we are committed to the safety of every person at the show. We have created a convention code of conduct policy that fosters a safe and welcome space for all gamers. We have implemented a policy where every volunteer will be subject to a background check before being allowed to participate in our program. We have contracted with a counseling professional to train our staff how to respond to any inappropriate behavior by those attending this year’s Origins Game Fair. We do not tolerate harassment of convention participants in any form. Convention participants reported or caught violating this policy may be expelled without refund at the discretion of show management. Harassment is any unwanted contact, which includes (but is not limited to): physical or verbal threats; unwelcome attention; stalking; unwanted photography or recording; offensive behavior; use of physical force; behavior that creates a disturbance or is dangerous; using sexually explicit or offensive language or conduct; excessive profanity; obscene gestures; use of racial, religious, sexual, political, gender, ability, ethnic slurs, or any other targeted comments which are intended to cause personal offense to another Origins participant, either in-person at the event or through social media channels. If a person tells you “no,” you are expected to desist immediately. Remember: “No” means no. “Stop” means stop. “Go away” means go away. Attire is not consent. Individuals finding themselves in a situation where they feel their safety is at risk or who become aware of an attendee not in compliance with show policies should immediately locate the nearest Security Guard, Origins Volunteer, or Staff Member, so that the matter can be handled promptly. The Origins Show Office is in A112. During show hours you can always find an Origins Staff Member or Security Guard in the Show Office.

10 | Origins Game Fair 2019

Uniforms of current active service members are not allowed as costumes. These include uniforms for the police, active military, security guards, deputies, fire marshals, paramedics, etc. No real weapons or functional props are allowed at Origins. All weapon replicas must be cleared by convention security and peace bonded. Visit the Security Office directly outside the Exhibit Hall in the main concourse.

Alcoholic Beverages and Illegal Substances

Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages outside of authorized areas prohibited. Illegal substances at Origins will not be tolerated. Violators will be asked to leave the building and charges may be filed for prosecution.

Smoking

Smoking, including the use of electronic smoking devices, is not allowed inside any of the convention facilities, including public areas and participating hotels. Smoking and the use of electronic smoking devices is allowed outside in designated smoking areas. Cigarette butt litter is a hazard to the environment. Please do your part to keep Columbus clean and dispose of your trash in the proper receptacles.

Cancellation and Refunds

Cancellation or refund requests for pre-registered badges must be submitted by May 31. All refunds will be credited to the original card used for purchase and are subject to a $10 cancellation fee. Cancellation/refund requests will not be accepted after the cutoff date. Origins Game Fair Badges are not transferable. Refunds for event tickets are given for canceled events or up to 24 hours prior to scheduled event time. If the event is cancelled, the event ticket must have the signature from staff at the Event HQ in your area to be refunded.

Larry Dixon is a respected, funny, friendly and completely approachable guy with a diverse and adventurous history. He is a "Player Character," as he puts it, whose life seems like fiction---but he is completely for real. Educated at the North Carolina School of the Arts during High School, and then at the Savannah College of Art and Design, his story work became as popular as his artwork. He has been an uncredited co-plotter or co-writer for many popular properties, bringing jovial and energetic approaches to collaborative work.

Mercedes entered this world on June 24, 1950, in Chicago, had a normal childhood and graduated from Purdue University in 1972. During the late 70’s she worked as an artist’s model and then went into the computer programming field. In addition to her fantasy writing, she has written lyrics for and recorded nearly fifty songs for Firebird Arts & Music, a small recording company specializing in science fiction folk music.

The Hall of Fame recognizes and archives the history of the most influential designers, artists, authors, sculptors, and writers who have made a significant impact on the development of the hobby game industry. The Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design established the Hall of Fame to honor our industry’s most prominent contributors. Each year, the Academy considers new industry pioneers to be honored and inducted into the hall. In addition, products that have made a lasting impression on the hobby industry may also be considered for the Hall of Fame. New members are inducted annually during the Origins Awards ceremony. They are welcomed to the Hall of Fame with an achievement plaque presented to them by existing Hall of Fame members. Origins is happy to honor the individuals who have made critical contributions to gaming. We invite you to join us in recognizing this year’s inductees at the Origins Awards on Saturday from 8pm - 10pm in Union Station Ballroom B. Gerald Brom Born in the deep dark south in the mid-sixties. Brom, an army brat, spent his entire youth on the move and unabashedly blames living in such places as Japan, Hawaii, Germany, and Alabama for all his afflictions. From his earliest memories Brom has been obsessed with the creation of the weird, the monstrous, and the beautiful. At age twenty, Brom began working full-time as a commercial illustrator in Atlanta, Georgia. Three years later he entered the field of fantastic art he’d loved his whole life, making his mark developing and illustrating for TSR’s best selling role-playing worlds. He has since gone on to lend his distinctive vision to all facets of the creative industries, from novels and games, to comics and film. Most recently he's created a series of award winning horror novels that he both writes and illustrates. Brom is currently kept in a dank cellar somewhere in the drizzly Northwest.

Vlaada ChvĂĄtil Vlaada was born in 1971, and since then, he has been playing and making games. He studied computer science (and made strategic play-by-mail computer game as his master thesis). Then he worked for a classic IT company for few months (and added an ascii-art videogame to the hospital information system they developed). After, he started to work at a videogame company (and, well, made games there, too). All that time, he was creating board games as his hobby. When he felt the videogame industry grew too big, he co-founded Czech Games Editions and switched to board games professionally, keeping videogames as his hobby instead. In the past several years, he joined these two passions and has been working closely with the CGE digital team, making mobile and computer implementations of his board games.

This is the inaugural year for the Rising Star award. The Hall of Fame honors individuals who over their careers have contributed in fields that have advanced gaming and brought new players into its audience. Usually the candidates for the Hall of Fame have worked in their fields for 15 years or longer and their accomplishments have stood strong over the years. The Rising Star award is intended to honor individuals who are in the early stages of their careers in gaming who have demonstrated exceptional ability in their early work and achievements. By honoring the achievements of our newer colleagues, we hope to inspire them and others to continue to create the things that our players love.

In addition to puzzles, players are forced (via a shuffleboard style combat board) to do battle with animatronic monsters and costumed NPCs. Participate in the premiere of two brand new modules called "E1 - Abyssal Swamp" and "E2 - Path of Death”. There is also the prequel adventure "N3 Vault of the All-Father". All three modules can be played in any order, but playing them in the N3, E1 and E2 order might be the best fun.

I am Smithee, the Mad Allen, wielder and Host of the Insanity Gauntlet, an event known colloquially as the one-and-only, original Smithee Awards! My cohorts and I welcome you once again to the ceremony dedicated to the freakish world of Bad Movies -- a universe vastly overpopulated. Help cull it down to size by voting for your favorite of 5 (unintentionally) hilarious clips in each of the 18 (intentionally) outlandish categories, including: Most Ludicrous Premise, Worst Science, "Cutting Butter with a Chainsaw," Stupidest-Looking Monster, "Let's up the Rating to 'R'," and, of course, Worst Acting and Worst Picture. Each clip is a cinematic gem, embodying the very essence of what not to do when making a movie...and you decide the survivors! Plus, you'll want to be there for the unique random prize giveaways! So dust off a seat and come join us for THE 28th ANNUAL SMITHEE AWARDS, taking place Friday at 7pm until about midnight in Union Station Ballroom B. 80 | Origins Game Fair 2019

4. All weapons and props must conform with Origins Game Fair 2019 rules, convention center policies, and local laws concerning carrying a weapon. If there is a question of doubt, don’t bring it (see Show Policies p.10).

Pride

5. Please provide reference images of the character you are dressed as. We cannot guarantee the judges will know what your character looks like, so having something to compare to will help you as much as them! Please provide this image on a piece of paper to attach to your costume contest registration form. No digital images (i.e. cell phones, iPads, portable computers, tablets, etc.) or books can be submitted for your reference image. Please print the picture out for the judges. 6. Each costume must be entered separately. The costumes may be presented on stage (and prejudged) together, but each costume is judged as a separate entry. Simply put: the “Best of Show” award can only go to one individual and not a group. 7. The contest will be limited to 50 entries total. Please be at Union Station Ballroom B to sign up.

Thanks

8. Origins Game Fair and Wasabi Anime reserve the right to modify, update, or amend the rules at any time.

Awards & Honors

3. No bought costumes. Costumes must be 50% crafted or more. You may purchase parts of a costume, but said parts must be disclosed during the judging process. If you are not the maker of your costume (and simply modeling), said creator of the costume must be present with you upon entry. If the costume wins an award, the award will go to the creator of the costume.

Programming

2. The Costume Contest is a family-oriented event. Please keep all costumes to a “PG-13″ rating (i.e. no nudity or overly revealing attire).

1. You must have purchased an entry into Origins Game Fair 2019 in order to enter/present on stage for the Costume Contest.

In Memoriam - Andrea Steyer

Origins Volunteer for over a decade Andrea was born on April 15, 1981 and spent her childhood in various parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Idaho. A love of science and a sense of compassion led Andrea to a career in nursing. She was intensely curious and a voracious reader, had an unparalleled love for board games, cats, casinos, knitting, travel, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and was an avid tabletop gamer and roleplayer. Andrea spent a decade volunteering in Registration at Origins, through which she met her husband Cory; they were married at the con in 2012. She also reunited with a high school crush, Adam, at Origins in 2011, and the spark rekindled; they spent eight happy years together, and Adam officiated hers and Cory’s wedding. She and Cory also met their mutual partner, Jade, at Origins in 2011 completing her eclectic family. We were all saddened and shocked in the late summer of 2018 when Andrea was diagnosed with angiosarcoma. Although she fought hard, the cancer moved faster than anyone expected, and Andrea passed away on November 17th, 2018, surrounded by her partners, friends, and family. Andrea brought love, laughter, and an infectious spirit of joy to everyone whose life she touched, and this memorial can only scratch the surface of the beautiful soul that she was.
