Dear GAMA members, Welcome for the second year at the Peppermill Reno. I hope this GAMA Trade Show (GTS) will be even better than the previous one. I encourage first-time retailers to check our orientation seminar, but most importantly, to talk to your fellow retailers. GTS is your best opportunity to mingle with your peers, exchange novel ideas, ask about unconventional business models, or talk about your favorite publishers and distributors. TM

It is also a great place to talk to publishers and catch up with the new GAME MANUFACTURERS releases and programs, ask questions, and ASSOCIATION suggest ideas to improve everybody’s bottom line. New publishers should also attend the manufacturers’ track, particularly the Manufacturing 101 where veterans of the industry will share their dos and don’ts, as well as their best practice to navigate the choppy waters of the game industry. My advice again is to reach out and talk to your fellow publishers: we are a friendly bunch and will be glad to share our experience with you. TM

MANUFACTURERS I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meet new onesGAME in Reno this week and share a meal, a ASSOCIATION drink, or a laugh with you. Please don’t hesitate to stop me in the halls of the Peppermill.

Let’s get down to business and let’s not forget to have fun! Stephan Brissaud GAMA President TM

GAME MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION

Welcome Retailers, On behalf of the entire GAMA Retail Division we want to welcome you to Reno! It is our sincere hope that you will benefit greatly from the programs and offerings that this trade show offer. This week will be packed full of business development, networking opportunities, and hands on activities to help you make purchasing decisions. I encourage everyone to explore this site book and take time to absorb as much as you can. This way you don’t miss a moment of the great offerings that the GAMA Trade Show is known for. But know that anyone of the retail division members are here to help and assist you. Lastly, take this wonderful opportunity to get to know your publishing, manufacturing and distribution partners. This is a perfect time to find resources you may not have realized were available to you as a retailer. That all starts with simple introductions and knowing they are excited to meet and educate you on how their brand and/or services can fit in your store. So again, on behalf of myself and the GAMA Retail Division, welcome to the GAMA Trade Show and the beautiful Peppermill Resort and Spa. Dawn Studebaker GAMA Retail Division Chair GAMA Board Member

The GAMA Retail Division, or GRD, are owners and employees of any GAMA member store that carries games and gaming supplies. These stores include hobby stores, game stores, comic shops, toy stores, book stores, entertainment stores and more. As a retailer at the GAMA Trade Show, you are an active voting member of the GRD! You do not have to attend the show to be a GRD member, but attendance helps you make the most of GRD membership benefits. As a member, store owners or their chosen representative have a vote in choosing the officers of the GAMA Retail Division here at the GAMA Trade Show.

What does the GAMA Retail Division (GRD) Do? The GRD Officers, elected by the GRD membership, work alongside the GAMA Board of Directors and GAMA Staff to best serve the needs of the GRD. The GRD manages the retail seminar track each year at the GAMA Trade Show. They select the topics and organize presenters into a schedule of valuable content for fellow retailers.

Retail Mentorship Program: The Mentorship Program began in the Spring of 2000 with the vision that better-informed stores will grow and thrive. Since then, this program has been a resounding success. The program is available to new or aspiring retailers who would like to have someone on hand to call, email, or otherwise connect with for advice on business start-up. If you’re interested in being part of this program, either as a mentor or seeking a mentor, please contact the GAMA Retail Chair (GRDChair@gama.org).

Power Retail Awards: The Power Retail Awards recognize and honor the most innovative and professional retailers in our industry. Categories include Outstanding Marketing, Outstanding Organized Play, and Outstanding Store Design. The Outstanding Store award recognizes one nominee that represents all aspects of a successful hobby game retail business model. The Power Retail Awards ceremony takes place during the GAMA Dinner Tuesday night at 7 PM in the Tuscany Ballroom. The awards are open to any current GRD member that has been in regular retail operation for at least one full year. For more information about the Power Retail Awards and how you can nominate your store for next year, please visit gamatradeshow.com/power-retail-awards.

GAMA Retail Division Elections: If you are a retailer at the GAMA Trade Show, someone from your store should attend the GAMA Retail Division Elections. Retailers will select their representatives to serve on the GAMA Retail Division Board. The elected board members then choose their Chairperson and officers. The Chair of the GRD also serves as a member of the main Board of Directors for GAMA. This position carries with it the responsibility to represent retailer interests to the GAMA main board. The GRD Elections take place Tuesday night directly following the GAMA Dinner in the Tuscany Ballroom.

Premier Presentations

Manufacturers showcase the newest products and announcements in the Premier Presentations program. This is an exclusive first-look at what’s coming out in the hobby market and how to use it to invigorate sales.

Retailers can build their schedule from a variety of in-depth seminars in each time block. By doing so, retailers earn their way to the Retailer Appreciation Package or “The Box” worth over $1,000. You can earn while you learn!

Retailer Appreciation Package

AKA “The Box”

Bring the GAMA Trade Show experience back to your store with over $1,000 in free product! The GAMA Trade Show Retailer Appreciation Package is designed to maximize your ROI at the show. Our job is to equip you with the knowledge and pieces to sell more products at your store every year. Our Premier Presentations offer exclusive access to the latest innovations, products, and ideas to boost your business. When you attend every hour of programming, you are rewarded with over $1,000 in product sent directly to your store! Sit down with the industry’s largest game companies to hear first-hand about new products and initiatives. This is your time to exchange information, experiences, and play an integral role in one of the largest growing facets of the economy. Our Retailer Appreciation Program is unparalleled not only in this industry, but in the global marketplace.

How does “The Box” work? The intent of “The Box” is to put new products that our manufacturers are highlighting into your store with an incentive to sell. Attending the Premier Presentations arms you with the knowledge and experience to know how these products work and how they can drive new business to your store. This program helps link manufacturers to retailers so that the whole industry thrives and remains successful.

How do I make sure I receive my appreciation box while I am attending the GAMA Trade Show? You must be pre-registered for the show and must attend one Premier Presentation in every time slot on Tuesday and Wednesday. See pages 12 - 15 for presentation schedule and details. A GAMA representative will be available at each session to scan your badge and track your participation in the program.

When will my appreciation box arrive? Please allow six weeks after the GAMA Trade Show for your box to arrive. If your store is located outside of the United States, please provide a freight forward address for shipping to Jessica Davidson Bean admin@gama.org. For any other questions about this program, please contact Jessica Davidson Bean by email or visit the Seminars desk in the Naples foyer to speak with Convention Coordinator Meg O’Malley.

Who is eligible for “The Box”? GAMA Retail Members are eligible for this program, excluding Introductory Retailers. You must have pre-registered for the show and attend one Premier Presentation in every time slot on Tuesday and Wednesday. For retailers with multiple locations, each store must be a GAMA Retail Member and preregistered for the GAMA Trade Show.

Distributor / Manufacturer Pitch Time Tuesday 2pm - 3:30 pm, 4:30 pm – 6 pm Wednesday 9:30 am – 11 am Tuscany Ballroom The Distributor/Manufacturer Pitch Time is a new business event we are introducing at the GAMA Trade Show this year. It is an opportunity for distributors and manufacturers to connect in a personal setting.

What is the purpose? We hope that this will help distributors and mid to small manufacturers have a time and place to meet and discuss business. We see this as an opportunity to take orders for great new and existing games that distributors may not have otherwise seen.

How does it work? Distributors take their place at an assigned table. Manufacturers take a seat and talk business for 10 minutes. When time is up, manufacturers have 5 minutes to get to the next distributor table and a fresh 10 minutes. A clock will keep time and chime at the start and finish of each interval.

2019 Power Retail Nominees Outstanding Marketing Metal Galaxy Social Games and Bistro Calgary, Alberta Metal Galaxy has been featured on TV, radio and printed news over a dozen times thanks to our great marketing team. We have also been successful marketing a hybrid store that features a full-service cafe, board game cafe section as well as a traditional gaming store.

Black Knight Games Hamilton, Ontario At Black Knight Games we work hard to offer our community the best organized play experience. Last year Black Knight Games ran 186 Special Events, 870 weekly-gaming events, and 4 weeklong Game Camp for a total of 1060 events in 2018! The success of our Knights of Blackwood youth program pushed us to focus more on our younger gamers, rewarding kids with fun prizes and unique events. We also expanded our outreach into the greater

109

community and established partnerships with local businesses, libraries, universities, and educators through our new Educator’s Program. Dice N Duels Fernley, Nevada We teach every game we carry. We are family orientated and encourage parents to play with their children! During our Organized play we tend to allow people help with building their decks unlike most other stores. We feel allowing people help with these types of things will teach them the how to’s and whys so people become more comfortable with sealed, drafts etc. ensuring people learn, and enjoy the games thus making them wat to come back and play. Good Times Games and Electronics Prince Rupert, British Columbia We have a unique, exciting “Heroes of Hawethorne” and “Ladies of Hawethorne” in store organized Dungeons and Dragons scene. With 400+ boys and girls between the age of 6 and 14 and over 40 adult ladies in the various campaigns we feel is one of the most dynamic programs in the world. Both programs also feed into the many D&D birthday parties and now massive summer camp programs that dominate our summers. Hometown Comics & Games, INC Greenfield, Indiana Hometown Comics & Games is outstanding because we have built a community. We have hosted charity events that collected can goods for the local soup kitchen and items for a charity called Backpacks of Hope. Our players surprise us all the time with the size of their heart for each other and the shop. Kirwan’s Game Store Catskill, New York Red Claw Gaming Corporation Edmonton, Alberta Our organized play is more targeted to the casual player who is just looking for fun. We have tapped into the local community to find game “mentors” that assist in the running of events. As our organized play is very welcoming to the new or curious player, we have been approached on many occasions to participate in local expo’s and larger community events. Since moving to this model our sales have increased over $50,000 this year.

Outstanding Store Design La Caravana CDMX Benito Juarez, Mexico La Caravana CDMX is Mexico City’s biggest board game club. Our focus is the personalized experience, that’s why our ludic masters have a little chat with each of our clients to ensure everyone gets the perfect game based on their likes and previous gaming experience. We also serve snacks, sandwiches, beer, coffee and cold beverages. We just made a major renovation to our venue and added a new floor; now up to 110 people can have fun with us at the same time.

TCB Games Huntington, Indiana TCB Games Huntington occupies a 1904 Carnegie Library. This building has its original bookshelves in a two-story setup in the main great room. Our other floors include a play area the has room for 100 additional players, a media rental tournament room, future home of a restaurant, and a high-end tattoo parlor on the second floor and local art sold on our walls.

Multiple Categories Carta Magica Ottawa, Ontario Outstanding Marketing, Outstanding Organized Play

2018 was a record-breaking year for Carta Magica—shattering many of Canada’s long-standing attendance records such as YCS Niagara 755 players (previous attendance 555) and Pokémon Toronto Regionals 940 players (previous attendance 487). Giving back to the community is one of our main directives at Carta Magica. We sponsor after-school kids’ programs and camps, as well as participate in the Ontario Co-op placement program to help students get real world working experience. We also donate over $10000 of product to the Toy Mountain Christmas Charity. Covenant Tulsa Tulsa, Oklahoma Outstanding Marketing, Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

Covenant is the greatest gaming store - because stores are about people coming together to connect, and our people are exceptional. We dedicate every day to creating a gaming environment that allows both customers and staff to have a positive and meaningful experience. People come to Covenant after a long day of work or a lonely time at home, and we invite them in to relax and enjoy a few games without that competitive edge. We build our in-store experience around casual events, free demos, quarterly leagues, and free-to-play board games. With this framework in place, there is no need to crush the person across from you - which means that the conversation, laughter, and connection between those around the table becomes the focus. Game Empire San Diego, California Outstanding Marketing, Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

Game Empire is a comfortable, well-lit welcoming store. We have staff dedicated to merchandising, keeping the shelves clear for browsing. Organized play is a priority here. We have regular groups meeting here for D&D and Magic, but we also support Star Wars legion, Keyforge, Kill Team, Ascension, and even a mah jongg group! Every night has something happening and we let people know via signage and electronic media. As meetup. com is strong in San Diego, we take full advantage to make people aware of a Munchkin party or Newbie night Friday. People regularly come in from out of town and say, “Wow! I’ve never seen a store like this.”

GameKnight Games Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Zia Comics and Games Las Cruces, New Mexico

Outstanding Marketing, Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

Outstanding Marketing, Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

GameKnight Games began in 2003 as a side business of about 100 square feet handling Dungeons & Dragons books, miniatures and a few board games. Now we have a 6000 square foot building, complete with murals outside and in. Care was given to make the store handicapped accessible and display merchandise in a clearly labeled easy to find manner. A medieval village mural decorates the back wall. A separate upstairs room has a Star Wars theme and will soon have a mural of its own. Often described as part retail store and part club house, our large open gaming area has various sizes of tables suitable for playing TCGs, playing out miniatures battles, or hosting a plethora of role playing games. Many tables have oversized play-mats to protect cards, or vinyl dry erase mats for drawing out dungeons on.

Zia Comics hosts weekly FREE board game nights, jigsaw puzzle tournaments, bingo, and a plethora of other game related events to keep the customers happy and playing more games. We have hand dipped ice cream, cosplay supplies, an arcade, and 2 escape rooms.

Get Some Game Charlotte, North Carolina Outstanding Marketing, Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

Get Some Game is a game store and esports cafe located in a 7,800 square foot building comprised of 2 floors as well as a 3,600 square foot 6 car garage for extra gaming space when needed. Located inside Get Some Game is Comic Girl Coffee, an LGBTQ+ coffee and comic book shop. Patrons looking to have fun are spoiled for choice between our board game library, arcade, esports cafe, Table of Ultimate Gaming room, Virtual Reality room and general gaming area. We partner with local small businesses and groups to help those who enjoy our industry get funding, obtain recognition, and to spread the word that the gaming industry is still strong. We have helped people receive funding for everything from hosting conventions to finding organ donors and raising awareness for suicide prevention. Giga-Bites Café Marietta, Georgia Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

Giga Bites has a huge line of card, board, and table top games. They are always running events for every game imaginable and are extremely welcoming to new players. What really stands out about Giga Bites is their customer service weather it’s tracking down a hard to find item, helping you explore new game systems, joining up with play groups, or simply taking your food and drink order with a smile. Knight Watch Games San Antonio, Texas Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

We have elevated the immersive game experience to unprecedented levels. Coupled with our knowledgeable, friendly staff, our first-class store has risen to be San Antonio’s favorite. Only 2.5 years old, we’ve raised the bar on what the modern game store should look like.

Big Easy Comics Covington, Louisiana Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

Big Easy Comics has truly embraced a philosophy of inclusion and adding unique value to our customer experience. We work hard to cultivate a customer community both in the store and on social media platforms that embraces us as an experience. We’ve streamlined processes to improve the customer experience and implemented a kiosk-based pre-order system. We’re well diversified so that we can best appeal to a wide array of interests. We look to add even more value by serving customers coffee, smoothies, pizza and sandwiches from our full-service kitchen and by enabling customers to enjoy our play space 24x7 with our membership program. Our organized play program has been highly successful due in part to the positive community we’ve cultivated the past 8 years and the hands-on approach we take to all events that go on in our store. Dragon’s Lair Comics and Fantasy Houston Houston, Texas Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

Game On Games McCook, Nebraska Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

Game On is a chain of 4 stores across Nebraska. We run tons of special events, from pantry food drives called Winter is Coming to Summer Camps to School Board Game Nights and everything in-between including the staples like FNM and Pokemon Leagues. We pack our stores full of life with top to bottom merchandising to create ease of movement from entry to game room while being bright and welcoming for all ages/ genders. Our Social Media and monitored groups coupled with our award-winning designed posters pull curious beginners and gaming veterans into our game room for the jam-packed schedule of events. Great Escape Games Sacramento, California Outstanding Organized Play, Outstanding Store Design

We have a FNM program that regularly draws 30-50 modern players, an in-store ranking system for each game system we run events for, three 40K tournament series, demo nights, D&D Adventurers league twice a week, a chess club night with over 30 players, Keyforge events every Sunday, and much more. Great Escape Games has been around for almost 23 years and has the largest store in Northern California with over 11,000 Sq ft. This year we did a remodel switching our store and gaming space. We now have 3,000 sq ft of gaming space which includes two private rooms for rental and a party room.
