It’s been ten years since we first opened our doors and Garbstore still remains true to the same core values which were so fundamental all those years ago: independence, craftsmanship and innovation. Each season, we have the opportunity to travel the globe, sourcing new brands to present at the store. With Japanese design and manufacturing playing a huge influence since we launched, we continue our love affair by introducing a selection of ingenious brands from the region. Taking its name from the city of Kojima, which has become known as the ‘Denim capital’ of Japan. Kapital fuses American vintage wear with Japanese artisan methodology resulting in a collection of workwear inspired outerwear and separates. In continuation of this Japanese-American hybrid theme, Garbstore bestseller, Engineered Garments is back again for another season. Founded in 1999 by vintage clothing connoisseur, Daiki Suzuki, Engineered

Garments takes cues from US sportswear, outdoor and military clothing to create a collection which prides itself in the exceptional design details and garment engineering. Pre-worn garments are reimagined for AW17 with the unveiling of three brands who are changing the face of vintage clothing. Coochucamp, Yoused and Rebuild by Needles are presenting an inventive interpretation of repurposed clothing, deconstructing sportswear and military pieces and transforming them into unique collectibles. Garbstore continues to provide a UK platform for emerging and established streetwear brands from across the globe for AW17. Delivering a well needed dose of sardonic wit, brands like Surf is Dead, Gimme Five and Know Wave combine original graphic print with thought provoking slogans to create exclusive, must-have products that transcend age or gender.

Garbstore.ten Garbstore opens new Seven Dials store to celebrate a decade

September 2017 saw the opening of Garbstore.ten, a store created to celebrate a decade of the innovative British menswear brand Garbstore. Set in the heart of London’s Seven Dials, the space introduces a collective of collaborative projects and events in addition to housing a series of rotating exhibitions. Throughout it's tenure, Garbstore.ten will play host to a number of exclusive projects with long-term partners Reebok, which will be showcased within the exhibition space. Other features include a series of T-shirts celebrating the 10th anniversary of the brand. Each T-shirt has been designed by one of the makers behind some of Garbstore’s favourite labels, collaborators and retailers from the past decade and a percentage of proceeds will go towards the Syrian refugee crisis. In keeping with this charity incentive, Garbstore.ten introduces ‘Ten Hands’ – an installation of ten 3D vintage glove moulds which have been customised by some of the closest collaborators over the years including Brain Dead, Nanamica, Engineered Garments and Needles to name a selection. These sculptures will be sold as part of a Christmas auction. Further limited-edition collaborations and exclusive activities will be announced in due course. Keep up to date with the latest news on garbstoreten.com

With a heritage that boasts of extensive experience in sneakers and fashion, Brandblack has managed to find a perfect sweet spot where so many others fail. Fusing form and function, Brandblack pushes the boundaries of sports performance. Sportswear is reimagined and amplified. Innovative fabrics are combined with contemporary silhouettes in warm earthy tones to create a collection of elevated lifestyle pieces that straddle between active wear and leisure so efficiently. Featuring innovative waterproof fabrics and progressive footwear styles, Brandblack continues to go from strength to strength.

If it's well-made quality garb you are after, Engineered Garments is the one for you. With inspirations coming from heritage sportswear, outdoor clothing and military uniforms, founder Daiki Suzuki conceived the brand with a vision; to craft contemporary garments with urban usability. Blending traditional tailoring techniques with contemporary fabrics and prints, the result is a timeless and indestructible collection. Produced in the USA with the artisanal expertise of Daiki, it offers the very best in on and off-duty clothing. This season, overtones of grey in textural fabrics come into play. Relaxed tailoring is designed to layer with the re-introduction of the three-piece. Waistcoats in stormy hues are partnered with spot-on shirting in check, chambray and flannel. For a more luxurious version, we present the Over Vest Nyco Ripstop – lined with faux fur, it’s the ultimate winter warmer.

Glove cutting is a very rare skill and today there are fewer than a hundred practicing glove cutters in the world. Good thing then that the only two in Sweden, Anton and Niklas Magnusson are fourth-generation members of the Hestra glove making empire! Whilst everything they do is steeped in tradition, refinement and innovation is key to their success and Hestra strive to evolve and build on their past successes. Materials are second to none when it comes to creating a Hestra glove, and it is a process that isn’t taken lightly. Sourcing the finest of exclusive leathers from around the world, the results are butter soft creations that last a lifetime. For AW17, we introduce new styles to the offering, made from a durable Elk Leather sourced from Sweden and Finland with a beautiful grain texture. In traditional shades of tan and black or zesty tones of yellow and orange, these are the only gloves to see you through winter.

With over 20 years in the knitwear business, Hikaru Noguchi is at the top of her game and there is no stopping her. Influences range from traditional knit techniques and patterns and sources of inspiration are diverse, from flea markets all over the world to paintings of De Chirico. She seeks a look that is both sophisticated and quirky, achieved through unusual juxtapositions of colour and texture. With a fundamental theme of joie de vivre which runs throughout, her creations exude quality and craftsmanship – key attributes which clearly demonstrate how, after two decades, Hikaru Noguchi has stood the test of time. This season, Noguchi’s signature techniques are as evident as ever. Scarves are embroidered with unique yet subtle designs ensuring that each piece retains an element of exclusivity. Tactile mohair, knitted ties, beanies and gloves all come together for a collection of modern knitwear masterpieces. To celebrate our ongoing relationship, Garbstore has collaborated with her on a capsule range of products. This October, for one day only, Noguchi will be at Garbstore.ten, offering bespoke personalisation of the Hikaru Noguchi x Garbstore knitwear collection.

Co-Founders Jorrit and Nicky crossed paths on the border of Ecuador and Peru in the 90’s, a watershed moment, this chance encounter led to a shift in the way they lived their lives, moving their families from the suburbs of London to the solitude of the Lake District to a small community that they now call home. Inspired by the story of 1900’s maverick, Millican Dalton, they sought to capture the spirit of their travelling adventures and follow a new path. Continually wanting to challenge themselves and make sustainable decisions for planet and people, Jorrit and Nicky try to reduce their impact wherever possible. This season, we present the Maverick Collection. Lightweight and minimal, these bags are created to help you travel further and for longer. Made from only a few panels of weatherproof Bionic Canvas, their strength is in their simplicity. Whichever bag you choose, let Millican set you on the right path.

Blurring the lines between technical outdoor and sportswear, Norse Projects has always been a leader in its field and a firm Garbstore favourite. With an ethos based on functionality and quality, there is a certain juxtaposition between the classic, yet ultra-modern pieces that they are so intent on producing. With close links to their Danish design heritage but with a keen interest in Japanese speciality products, the result is an easy-to-wear collection with minimal fuss. Clean silhouettes with discreet detailing in premium materials and functional fabrics are combined with a colour palette of zesty orange accents, rich navy and khaki. Designed to layer, the collection features fine knits, hand crafted in Nepal, teamed with classic shirting. Trousers are cut for a relaxed fit, the Harri Technical Poplin pants have received a cropped update for AW17 – giving them a fresh look and feel for the new season. Whether you’re after functional day wear or something a bit smarter, Norse Projects has it covered. Simplicity is key.

Bucket, baseball, beanie? Sublime is the go-to brand for headwear. An accented line-up of hats with roots in sports and casual wear, the concept is based on freely expressing your own individuality with an abundance of distinctive and rare material combinations in an extensive palette. Whether you are looking for colour pop or a complementary hue, these high-spirited hats have it all. From embroidered baseball caps to beanies hand knitted in Nepal, each hat has a unique detail setting it apart from its peers. This AW17, Sublime introduces the Cashmere Neck Warmer. Fine ribbed and knitted in Japan from a soft and light cashmere, this is the ideal accompaniment to your new season wardrobe and layers perfectly with the heaviest of winter warmer outerwear.

Functionality is at its best with our new arrivals from Weekend(er). Created to make your weekend lifestyle more enjoyable, the collection ranges from quirky mugs, paper clips and keyrings to an extensive range of utilitarian bags in a vibrant colour palette and now iconic camo line. Tote bags are injected with a dose of sardonic wit, from the ‘Taco Tote’ to the ‘Thank you for the fashion tips’ slogan tote, they introduce a well-needed humour hit to a sometimes-contrived fashion scene. Consistent attention to detail is evident throughout the collection, with built-in secret pockets and design features created to be both comfortable and practical, these really are the go-to bags for the perfect weekend.

GARBSTORE AW17 COLLECTION

Sunday Dispatch A fusion of past and present

11

11

This season, Garbstore takes reference from the early 1900’s British newspaper ‘Sunday Dispatch’ to create a collection that pays homage to WWII’s soldier’s uniforms and casual wear in the poignant postwar period. Oversized silhouettes and boxy shapes are reminiscent of surplus military clothing after the wars and provide an extra layer of authenticity to the collection. Enzyme washed garments and Japanese reproductions of vintage cloth allow a true sense of a newly constructed past. Vintage sportswear is reinterpreted in hardwearing materials, elevating it to a new level. The Bren Vest, takes inspiration from military wear of bygone years and is layered with our Classic Flight Shirt for a true utilitarian look. Hiking influences are introduced through discreet detailing and fabrications. The APS Trench - a fresh take on the sartorial classic, is reinterpreted the Garbstore way with the addition of sportswear pockets and playful proportions. Japanese craftsmanship and materials continue to play a profound influence and are evident in the Easy Hoody - cut using a Kimono pattern, whilst the Tomo Jacket is inspired by American military and Japanese service wear. Innovative techniques for knitwear are employed for the first time. Garbstore have worked with an English mill to twist yarns specially to create a static effect as seen in the Tri-Boston Sweater and the newly launched range of socks, made from alpaca for the ultimate in comfort. For AW17, Garbstore has collaborated with Japanese accessories brand Sanpak to re-create three exclusive styles. Going since the 1950’s and supplying the Japanese Forces all the while, Sanpak bags utilise military spec nylon and hardware. The Garbstore x Sanpak capsule collection takes original 1970’s silhouettes, and re-imagines them in modern tonal suede and Cordura nylon.

6 BRAND HIGHLIGHTS

INTERVIEW

Gimme Five Founded in 1989 by streetwear legend, Michael Kopelman, Gimme Five provides a platform for upcoming and established labels alike, letting the products speak for themselves

We managed to pin down Michael Kopelman for a chat about all things streetwear, from the 90’s scene to the establishment of his own label.

Know-Wave What originated as an online radio station has now evolved to become an international community platform and a permanent fixture on the NY scene. This season sees Know Wave collaborate with other industry players to create a line of limited-edition merchandise. They have partnered with MoMA PS1 to celebrate the 20th season of ‘Warm Up’ – their pioneering series of outdoor music sessions from the best in electronic music at their PS1 gallery in Queens. We also see them work with the venerable film company A24 to celebrate the release of the film Good Time, directed by the Safdie Brothers and starring Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Barkhad Abdi, and Bennie Safdie.

Q1. How did things with Stüssy take off? MK: I’ve always had a keen interest in music, I started to DJ in the 80’s and hanging out at London club nights such as The Language Lab, Embassy & Countdown. I used to work in the City but when things went bad in the market, I decided to take a gamble and start my own business from my home. My parents moved to NYC and It was there that I met Shawn Stüssy who booked me to play an event in Tokyo and that’s when things really got started for me. Q2. What was the streetwear scene like at that time?

Brain Dead An amalgamation of various influences; from punk and skateboarding to obscure comics and album artwork, Brain Dead is a collective of like-minded creatives who seek inspiration from today’s subcultures. This season sees their signature logo and graphics emblazoned on sporty influenced outwear from utilitarian parkas with statement slogans, to the trusty bomber jacket. Whilst tees and hoodies take centre stage, we also see the introduction of graphic print shirting and workwear inspired khakis with motif detailing. To celebrate a decade of Garbstore, we have collaborated with them on a limited-edition collection, available exclusively at Garbstore.ten. The range includes hand-embroidered, one of a kind jackets in addition to graphic print tees and digital print blankets. As always with Brain Dead, expect the unexpected.

Better (Formerly known as Bootleg is Better) Characteristically witty in nature – Better have mastered the art of provoking reactions with their range of graphic tees all injected with a dose of sardonic charm. With street culture playing a fundamental role since its inception, renowned Canadian skater, Avi Gold, was heavily influenced by his travels through Europe. Our must-buy this season? It has to be the Gravestone candle by artist Jason Rodman, a definite talking point.

MK: Stüssy was very different from other things around at the time. You had a mutual appreciation for others wearing the brand, it was an indicator of similar taste in music and interests. It was an exciting time in music, the rap scene was just starting and Stüssy was a significant influencer. Q3. How did you manage to evolve the brand? MK: With no social media, it was a very different landscape to what it is today. The success of the brand I believe came down to relationships, building genuine ones with the right people. Stüssy is inherently tied into skateboarding, surfing and music and this has always been an underlying element to everything we have done and the people we have connected with. Q4. How did Gimme Five come about? MK: Over the years, I’ve collaborated with numerous brands and designers and have had the opportunity to create products for them. I worked with Hysteric Glamour, Neneh Cherry, Massive Attack and Judy Blame in the 90’s. I started creating my own products again recently as I felt it would be fun to do my own.

Q5. What do you like to wear? MK: I like to wear simple things, nothing heavily branded. We have this really great Summer Nylon Shirt which I’m getting a lot of use of, it has a cool tonal cord trim in tan or navy. Anything with a utilitarian edge is always good.

Q6. Where do you see Gimme Five in 5 years? MK: I have quite a relaxed approach to the future and don’t like to overly plan. I prefer to see how things evolve and do what I want to do. Q7. Why Garbstore? MK: I’ve always had a huge respect for Garbstore and what they have done. Garbstore is a great independent store and they have such a unique offering in addition to creating their own collections. On a personal level, the whole team is always been a pleasure to work with. Q8. First job? MK: Chef Q9. Last book read? MK: Martin Eden by Jack London Q10. Favourite city? MK: London Q11. Netflix must-watch series? MK: Stranger Things, Fargo, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Happy Valley….
