Couverture and the Garbstore 188 Kensington Park Road, Notting Hill, London, W11 2ES, England Mon-Sat 10am-6pm | Sun 12 -5pm www.couvertureandthegarbstore.com

Couverture and the Garbstore was conceived as a creative concept by Emily Dyson and Ian Paley in 2008. Housed in a three-storey converted period townhouse, this Notting Hill style haven transports you through an eclectic edit of womenswear, menswear, accessories and homewares. Focusing on championing emerging and independent labels with a story to tell, these carefully curated collections perfectly embody the ‘shop independent’ philosophy that Couverture and the Garbstore stand by. This September saw the opening of Garbstore Ten, a store created to celebrate a decade of the label, set in the heart of London’s Seven Dials.

1 MARGO

London Calling

AW17

Collection Overview We introduce a demure new mood this season with a collection of elegant separates punctuated with unexpected design details

CLOSED

SAMUJI

Label Love

Finnish Functionality For The Everyday Wardrobe

With a fresh mix of timeless styles and innovative washes, Closed introduces a collection of effortless designs that transcend seasons. Established in 1976 "ça" for "c'est ça" in French which means "That's it". Unfortunately a big distribution company sued them and after the legal action was "closed" in 1978 and the name has stuck ever since!

This season we welcome Margo to the Couverture fold. As the exclusive UK stockist, we wanted to give you an inside scoop on the London based design duo and new collection. Introducing Charlotte and Bronwen. How was Margo conceived? We studied together and have been best friends ever since. Our careers took different paths but we brought our experiences and skills together to create Margo, which is an amalgamation of our second names: Mar from Marshall and Go from Good. I (Bronwen) had the idea on New Year’s Day and when I put the idea to Charlotte it felt like a marriage proposal… Luckily she said yes!

Their brand philosophy is based upon French imagination, Italian craftsmanship and German tradition – above all, it’s a family business and this is something that resonates with every collection they produce. With strong binds to its heritage roots in denim, Closed is consistently striving for innovation. Today, their design team creates ready-to-wear collections alongside its denim line. So, what’s their signature look? “Effortless and timeless - a pair of jeans with an oversized shirt”. With distinctive detailing such as their 33° X Pockets, these subtle qualities not only set them apart from their peers, but most importantly help provide the ultimate fit.

When purpose and sustainability come together to create beautiful designs, you know you are onto a good thing. Samuji is a creative studio and design house based in Helsinki, Finland. Since its first womenswear collection launched in 2011, the brand has evolved to present the ‘complete’ wardrobe for women. This Autumn Winter sees an understated aesthetic featuring warming tones of brown, camel and ecru elevated by distinct prints, and tactile fabrics. The Tito Shirt is beautifully tailored and features a 70’s inspired pointed collar. Perfect for pairing with this season’s knitwear. What we love about Samuji? The undisputed quality materials used combined with an overarching sense of passion and astute values which provide the basis for each collection.

BY FAR

The New British Icon

An Exploration Of Architecture, Design And Travel

It’s been almost 20 years since YMC launched, offering wearable yet distinctive pieces that eschewed seasonal trends. This AW17, they continue to do what they do best – stylish separates for the capsule wardrobe. Sportswear inspired sweatshirts are worn oversized and slouchy, whilst knitwear is luxuriously soft yet understated. The Loveless Cashmere Mix Knit is the perfect camel accent – made in Scotland from a blend of Merino Wool and Cashmere, it’s a timeless piece that can be worn in years to come.

What was your inspiration behind the Autumn Winter collection? We start with fabrics and create a palette of colours and textures and then the shapes and ideas start to spring from there. As always, we get inspiration from a constant mash up of art, music and nature. This season in particular it was abstract impressionists like Miro and Pollock and the retro nerdy-ness of Jarvis Cocker. The soundtrack in the studio shapes the mood a lot of the time. There’s plenty of purple, too, in an ode to Prince. Who is the Margo woman? We see her as a confident woman with a good sense of humour: a woman who wants to look effortless and relaxed but isn’t afraid to experiment with bold colour or interesting fabrications and have fun. What is your favourite spot in London to go for inspiration? We love both of the Tates and The Barbican, including the botanical green house. Gardens and parks in London are amazing – nearby we’ve got Walthamstow Marshes and The William Morris Gallery. We also pop into the Imperial War Museum sometimes for funny little detail ideas. What’s your top styling tip? We’re all about layering! The more layers the better. This season our lurex polo neck will be the ultimate layering piece – worn under dresses, shirts or jumpers to add a bit of sparkle to the greyest winter days!

Born out of a desire to create a line of footwear that they wanted to wear but couldn’t find, twin sisters Valentina, Sabina and best friend Denitsa, conceived By Far in 2016 and have been making waves internationally and on social media ever since! With inspiration taken from modern and classic interior design, travel and exploration – this season’s new collection can be summed up succinctly: architectural, bold and sophisticated. The perfect look for this season? “Clean lines and a really great pair of By Far shoes – whatever makes you feel good about yourself ”. Being raised in Bulgaria at such a poignant time, fashion influences came from seeing what their mothers were wearing. Options were limited so they would create their own garments using whatever resources they could find or buying things from the international store with whatever money they had. They survived on hand-me-down clothes and toys. These days, they feel a great appreciation for their childhood, the textural fabrics and subdued palettes that were deemed so boring back then are now the epitome of minimalism and this aesthetic has been imprinted on their look today. Why Couverture? For them, it is the perfect embodiment of London style.

JUPE BY JACKIE

Ethereal Elegance From India’s Finest Artisans Based in the Netherlands and India’s Uttar Pradesh, Jupe by Jackie was born out of a desire to shine a light on the art form of Indian hand embroidery and to give the artisans the recognition they deserve. A much-needed antithesis to the throwaway nature of today’s fast fashion. Jupe by Jackie’s new collection perfectly embodies the ethereal qualities of which we have become true fans. Sheer, silk chiffon is beautifully embellished with textured, hand-embroidered details whilst shimmering velvet is intricately cut with playful frills. Statement pieces that we will be reaching for come party season.

90’S Revisited We are embracing our free-spirited selves with Raquel Allegra this season who injects a sense of 90’s grunge with deconstructed cashmere, tie dye and plaid. A firm favourite with celebrities, editors and style savvy consumers alike – her collections continue to fly off the shelves due to their relaxed aesthetic and easy-to-wear styles. Continuously dedicated to the tradition of artistry and craftsmanship, Raquel’s signature techniques of shredded vintage tees have evolved in recent years much to our delight to include more luxurious materials such as cashmere, linen, deerskin and French lace. Watch this space.

This Autumn Winter 2017 provides a welcome throwback to the 1970’s where elevated daywear meets the reimagined party wardrobe for a collection of refined, scene stealing style statements. Whispers of pink in sumptuous textures are intertwined with warm, shimmering tones of gold and camel providing the perfect winter pairing. Relaxed tailoring meets playful pleating for a fresh take on evening wear. Blouses are beautifully embellished with exquisite embroidery whilst outerwear comes into its own with a modern update of the double-breasted coat. From caressable cashmeres to luxurious velvets and silk – opulence is reborn.

LONG TERM PARTNER

A Détacher Elevating daywear to new levels

9

9

Forgoing trends in favour of creating an exploration into surface, form and function, A Détacher has always paved its own path, which is one of the many things we love about the label. Founder, Monika Kowalska was born in Poland and educated in America and Italy. She is passionate about the construction of clothing and is dedicated in her quest to create something meaningful that doesn’t play party to the frivolity of trends. As one of Couverture’s longest standing partners, we have always been drawn to A Détacher’s everevolving abundance of prints, colours and textures in bold silhouettes. This season, daywear takes on a new form. Playful ruffles in warm rust and oversized shapes form part of a modern retro wardrobe. Rarified florals are combined with ladylike pussy bows and voluminous shirting. Embracing new lengths with ankle grazing dresses and skirts in moody blooms and grungy pleated plaid. Waist cinching tie details setting the collection apart from its contemporaries and proving yet again why A Détacher is such a Couverture favourite.

COAT EDIT'S

Love Story A modern revival of outerwear style heroes

MR. LARKIN

A True Embodiment Of Transatlantic Style

Paying homage to Ali MacGraw’s infamous Love Story of 1970’s fame, we embrace the classic preppy style of which she made iconic. YMC’s Brainticket Jacket sets the scene for a modern revival of the sheepskin jacket. A fresh take on the once, retro style, this cover-up is a luxurious addition to any winter wardrobe. For the ultimate game changer, meet Rejina Pyo’s Heather Box Coat. Sumptuous wool in a utilitarian khaki, this coat is worn oversized for a true contemporary yet classic look. In stark contrast to this, is the Raquel Allegra Belted Blazer in orange and marine. Distressed detailing meets edgy refinement – the transitional coat for the new season.

Introducing Mr Larkin. We managed to have a quick chat with Founder and Designer, Casey Larkin Blond to hear more about our new recruit. Who is the Mr Larkin woman? She is independent, thoughtful and busy. Describe your new collection in 3 words Feminine, personal, and relaxed. What made you decide to create your own line? I originally started Mr. Larkin, 10 years ago in San Francisco. It was a very different collection and time in my life then, so the origin and intent behind it was quite different than now. I’m not sure there is enough print space to go into this one, but let’s just say overall I am meant to be self-employed, and I wasn’t finding what I wanted in the market so I made it. What would you say are your 3 style essentials? I’m pretty low maintenance, but I do require more than 3: MAC red lipstick, dry shampoo, Mr. Larkin Babette Trousers in ink poplin, Baserange white tee shirt, oversized lightweight trench, and white sneakers or MNZ Roberta heels in Whiskey. I can pretty much go anywhere and do anything with those pieces. Tell us about what inspires you. The usual: art, music and my surroundings. More specifically, I tend to look to Matisse, Brancusi, Alexander Calder and Louise Bourgeois for artful inspiration in prints or patterns. My mom and grandmother have always been influential and guiding lights. And when in doubt, The Grateful Dead or Talking Heads can get me through any creative crisis.

Why Couverture? It is our only store in Europe (other than our own) and we couldn’t be happier. We feel Couverture embraces a similar (yet also different enough) approach to clothing as we do; supporting artful, modern, & independent designers & brands. Favourite way to spend a Sunday? Brunch with my family and biking around Copenhagen. Lipstick or eyeliner? Lipstick Favourite party song? Ignition Remix, R. Kelly

AN EVOLUTION OF SCENT

No Chemicals Couverture meets all your gifting needs this Christmas with an expanded No Chemicals collection – perfect for treating yourself or the loved ones in your life. Originally launched as a welcome antithesis to a saturated market of celebrity endorsed fragrances, No Chemicals is hand-blended in Paris using essential oils and traditional production methods. The result? An individual perfume with a contemporary edge. This season we introduce the ultimate in gift-sets including the full range and presented in a wooden box and Couverture’s handpainted paper. The range has now expanded to include ‘Fire Me Up’ matches – perfect for lighting your candles as the long match can reach the wick as it melts further down.
