BRAND FOCUS

THE ART OF STYLE

DESIGNER Q&A Can you tell us about how the label started? After finishing my MA at Saint Martins, I worked under Roksanda as her f irst assistant designer, gaining experience and knowledge and insight on how to run the business side of the brand. I won the Hans Nefkens award and was encouraged by the response to this and to my graduate collection to start my own brand. I decided to take a chance an go for our it in 2014 and launched Rejina Pyo.

The Great Chain of Sleepers collection sees artfulness fuse with practicality. Inspired by pyjama dressing, we see boxy silhouette shirting combined with ethereal sheer hand-embroidered dresses and lightweight intarsia knits with abstract floral detailing. Vibkov’s signature playfulness is evident throughout, quirky yet wearable, his sartorial power and continued ability to create pioneering collections have established him as one of Copenhagen’s biggest design talents and one that we continue to be surprised by.

Who is the Rejina Pyo woman? She is a confident woman with a strong sense of personal style. She is less moved to dress for trends and more by her own mood and creativity. The Rejina Pyo woman values design and functionality, she invests in quality pieces that can be worn season after season and reimagined to suit multiple occasions. How would you sum up the brand in 3 words? Playful, Elegant, Effortless.

1

Would you be able to tell us about the influences behind the SS18 collection? I was thinking about different roles that woman play in their lives inspired by the photographic series “The Brown Sisters” by Nicholas Nixon who photographed his wife and her sisters every year for over 40 years. The photos show the women aging and their relationships to each other evolving. I wanted to build a collection for women of all ages that would feel fresh, comfortable and wearable with the laid-back attitude of “nonchalance” that the women display in these photographs. The palette was inspired by the paintings of Milton Avery.

Your hero pieces from SS18? I love the Hazel Trench and the Miriam wrap dress. Where in London do you feel most inspired? In Alexandra Palace near my house, or visiting exhibitions at the Tate and smaller contemporary galleries. The past year has seen London based designer, Rejina Pyo, go from strength to strength, producing must-have collections that have been seen on some of the world’s most stylish women. Based in London, we caught up with Rejina to hear more about herself and the brand.

With a resume that boasts accolade after accolade, Vibskov is certainly no one trick pony. In addition to producing collections since 2003, he also plays drums in his band, has created costumes for the Swanlake Ballet in Paris and Madame Butterfly Opera in Brussels in addition to lecturing and publishing his own books.

Established by designers Anne Hilkin and Christian Kurt in Berlin in 2006, Anntian have consistently sought to create collections that provide an antithesis to the mass-produced nature of today’s fast fashion and to the loss of individuality. Crafted by small, regional manufacturers with a focus on sustainability, the result is a label that is filled with personality and designed to bring pleasure for years to come. Each collection provides a narrative into the world of Anntian, from clothing to interiors, they sit together harmoniously, telling the same story in different forms. With fabrics all designed in-house, graphics are often hand painted and hand printed, providing a signature look that proves to be a hit season after season.

4

For Spring Summer we see fluid conceptual silhouettes combined with contrasting painterly prints to create a collection of wearable statements. Unexpected dynamic detailing and innovative design processes result in a line of modern masterpieces, designed to transcend seasonal trends.

When nostalgia and nature collide

The need-to-know brand for jewellery addicts with a penchant for adornments of a sculptural and statement kind. Leigh Miller created her eponymous line following a decade working as a designer for big US brands including J.Crew and Calvin Klein. Being drawn to the freedom of expression inherent in metalworking and jewellery, Miller’s debut collection, Creatures of Comfort was launched in 2014 to much critical acclaim. Inspired by natural patterns and forms translated into metal, Leigh works in unconventional methods, crafting collections made from a full spectrum of metals and featuring semi-precious stones. We are excited to bring such a strong aesthetic on board for the new season and caught up with Leigh for quick chat.

DESIGNER Q&A Leigh Miller Leigh received her formal education in fashion design from OTIS College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, graduating in 2002. Shortly thereafter Leigh moved to New York, where she worked as a designer for J.Crew and Calvin Klein, among others. WRAY

Founded in 2015 by Wray Cook, her eponymous label is a NY-based contemporar y womenswear line that takes inspiration from sculpture, painting and beyond to create clothes that are focused on both form and function. We had a chat with our newest recruit to hear more about it.

BANJANAN Designed to roam Derived from the Hindi “Banjaran” meaning ‘bohemian, nomad, wanderer, traveller’, Banjanan is based in Jaipur, the majestic capital of Rajasthan in India. Dedicated to sustainability and supporting the local textile community, the brand works with skilled craftsman to create garments that draw on the expertise from generations of artisans. The result is a collection of hand-crafted modern heirlooms that pay homage to the past whilst celebrating the present and future. We couldn’t help but be inspired by the vivid and vibrant colour palette and beautiful hand embroidery that went into every piece. We caught up with Banjanan Founder, Caroline Weller, to hear more about it.

DESIGNER Q&A Can you tell us how Banjanan started? It was very much a time and place thing. Through a series of extraordinary events I found myself working in India. The craft,

AMROSE

colour, nature and environment just transported me to a whole new head space aesthetically. Nothing in the market reflected this, plus I had no clothes for my new life! Thus Banjanan. This collection could only come from where I am in my life right now, geographically and mentally. Have you always been passionate about sustainability and conscious production? It came on me gradually. A growing sense of unease and discomfort about needless waste and pollution in all aspects of my life. I realised that most of what we do in life we do “unconsciously”. We just have to wake up. What was life before Banjanan? Where did your career start? I’ve been a fashion designer my whole career. Out of fashion college I was hired by J.Crew and moved to NY, and went on to work my way up to SVP of design at companies such as Calvin Klein and Armani. Can you tell us about the SS18 collection? Yes I can! It’s full of my proprietary prints and colour

on Indian cotton and silks. I was in Switzerland when I designed it and I imagined a Tolstoy heroine running through meadows of wild flowers. I also found a wonderful little museum full of vintage Swiss decoupage which inspired the hand embroidery. As always, the pieces are yours to transform in your own way. They layer and travel really well.

Wray Cook Founded in 2015 by Wray Cook, WRAY is a New York-based contemporary womenswear collection. A graduate of California College of the Arts followed by extended studies at Parsons School of Design, Paris, Wray Cook cut her teeth at Issey Miyake and Rachel Comey before venturing out on her own. Wray resides in Brooklyn, NY with her husband.

What has been your proudest moment so far for Banjanan? Seeing women wearing my clothes and projecting their own personal style is always amazing. Loyal customers who keep coming back for more.

DESIGNER Q&A Can you tell us about how ‘Wray’ came about? I have always admired my Italian/American mother as a child and found her to be a style inspiration even as a small child during the late 80’s and 90’s. Growing up, it was a thrill trying

If you didn’t live in India, where else would be on your wishlist? How long have you got?

Cordelia Midi Dress – Sprig Cowslip

A sneaker brand like no other, Amrose was founded by brother and sister duo, Océane and Victor whose passion for Persian craftsmanship led to the creation of their own label. Inspired by the age-old culture and tradition of Kurdish footwear, their goal was to produce a line of innovative, one-of-a-kind products which could be found nowhere else.

What four things sets Ambrose apart from other sneaker brands? In their own words, “Unique, hand-crochet, colour and ecoresponsibility”. As innovators of the hand-crochet sneaker, the charm and craftsmanship evident in each pair is second to none. With a palette of primary colours and a distinctive pale pink sole, Amrose create footwear that expresses the wearers personality.

Why Couverture? We feel like Couverture’s curation and overall aesthetic aligns without New York sensibilities. It is the perfect marriage. The representation around other designers we admire is such a joy.

Aesthetics aside, Amrose is dedicated to being an eco-responsible brand though the materials they use, to the artisans that hand-craft each pair. In a bid to give knitters in remote locations the opportunity to work from home, they now have over 60 knitters in Iran who work with them. By purchasing directly from these women, they are guaranteed a better income through a cooperative which allows them to acquire more independence.

Ispahan Embroidered Shoes 16

What are you inspired and influenced by? We are very inspired by art. Ethan my husband and I have studio spaces right next to each other. At times, I find myself attracted to the yarn colours he is weaving over on his side of the studio. My pallets often come from there. Certain yarns he buys to make the paintings catch my eye and the marriage of colours within the paintings influences me. We both love fine art and are attracted to colourful paintings. Each season we usually handpaint a print, our inspiration for these prints comes from our time attending art shows in Chelsea. My love of fabric and sourcing comes from our travel. Twice a year I source fabric from the markets in India and sometimes Japan.

Do you have a signature style? What’s your current wardrobe go-to? I always wear our carryover style Fielding Pants named after my husband’s middle name. Black is not really my color and often times you will see me wearing browns, bright prints, pale pinks and rust colors from my collections. Anything but black (however we always offer it for those who wear it).

Each pair of shoes tells a personal story, from childhood memories to travels to lands afar, each design is accompanied by a tale from the past which makes each and every pair of shoes something truly special. For example, the ‘Bord De Seine’ style is based upon the period in their life when they lived on a boat on the Seine River and tells the story of how they used to walk alongside it.

What’s next for Amrose? “The development of a winter shoes collection and new designs for embroideries. As for the rest… we want to keep it as a surprise”.

Who is the ‘Wray’ woman? Our woman has a love for travel and a bold, fun aesthetic. She appreciates fine art and sculpture. She goes to art shows in Chelsea (NYC) and has cultivated a desire for food and culture. This woman is powerful and she is a feminist. She is traveling, she is strong, she is running around the city and hanging out at the racquet club in Connecticut with her family. She is the

master of her own life. She is me and my New York City friends.

You currently reside in NY, what are your art & design hot spots for the city? We love Chelsea and gallery hopping but also like to take a page from the classics. On weekends we will head to the MET and stroll in Central Park. I love going to Bemelman’s bar at the Carlyle hotel. On occasion Woody Allen will play piano there but there is always live piano playing every night. The best part of this place is its namesake. The artist and illustrator Bemelman who is famous for the Madeline illustrations. For design, we are obsessed with hopping around Soho to all of the furniture and sculptural showrooms. My husband and I are collectors of Danish and Italian furniture as well as sculpture. The Issey Miyake store and office where I worked was designed by Frank Gehry and I have always admired him. I encouraged my parents to move into the Gehry Building downtown for a while and they did. I used to visit them all the time and swim in the pool while looking up at the twisting building facade.

Why Couverture? Couverture has a unique edit, a singular point of view, and you seem really personal and collaborative! I really respect that.

Favourite way to spend the weekend? With my family including the dog. On an adventure in unchartered territory.

on my mother and grandmother’s clothing. Later on in life after studying design in San Francisco and Paris, I moved to NYC where I worked at Issey Miyake and interned at Rachel Comey. NYC cultivated my love for design even more. My Husband is a working artist and encouraged me to start WRAY. Together we collaborate on the line to bring our vision of the WRAY woman.

Still Life Printed Silk Wrap Top (Top Left) Silk Thorson Dress – Poppy Floral Print (Left Bottom) Ferry Jumpsuit – Clay Pink (Right)

Top travel tips for Summer? For us it’s Hong Kong and then India. I highly recommend Maheshwar and to stay at Ahilia Fort. You are able to dine with a Prince, have afternoon tea on a boat in the river, and shop with the locals. We also plan on heading to Cape Cod with our family in Massachusetts, home of the lobster roll! 17

Made from a fine Italian cotton yarn, the garments are made on loop wheel machines, a technique usually associated with vintage sweatshirting. This process is accentuated by the use of racking stitches and ribbing details, all of which contribute to this distinctive new hybrid of sportswear inspired knitwear.

Renowned for creating the best backpacks in Japan since the 1950’s, their popular take on the American Outdoor’s ‘Day Pack’ and the launch of their own Walkabout range has kept them in the manufacturing business to this day, becoming a cult favourite amongst Japanese outdoor and hiking enthusiasts. We have revisited the archives to introduce 3 new styles and an exclusive colourway to the collection.

A unique reinterpretation of traditional men’s staples

GO BAREFOOT

Adsum is the brainchild of Pete Macnee, who conceived the brand with Christian Rice following a stint with Mark McNairy and Billionaire Boys Club. Based in Brooklyn, this new label draws inspiration from their combined experiences of growing up across America and Canada, but through a New York City lens.

A Hawaiian tradition Where heritage meets modernity Founded by Sandro Zara in 1961, Venetian brand Barena brings a wealth of experience to the table with their curation of wardrobe essentials inspired by the rich style heritage of Venice. With a design philosophy based on precise tailoring, high quality fabrics, attention to detail and versatility, the result is a collection of carefully crafted garments that effortlessly transition between heritage and contemporary. We have teamed up with Barena to create some exclusive, one-off pieces for Garbstore. From textural sports blazers to relaxed tailored trousers – the look is reminiscent of a bygone era, a unique reinterpretation of old classics that feel just as relevant now as they ever were.

As long-term supporters and collaborators of Kenneth MacKenzie, we were excited to welcome on board his new brand, Modern Studies, for Spring Summer. Established in 1995, 6876 rose rapidly in prominence to become one of the UK’s most successful independent brands only to take a step back from the seasonal fashion calendar in 2008 to function more organically. This move led to a series of collaborations and projects with like-minded affiliates and led to the conception of Modern Studies. What started as an art project to present the work of like-minded artists and photographers, has now developed into a clothing collection. Key items include the Graigowl Worker Jacket, a fresh take on the classic Harrington Jacket featuring clean lines and a boxy silhouette, it is available in a muted charcoal or vibrant red.

MODERN STUDIES by 6876

Introducing modern studies

Steeped in family history, with a deep-rooted commitment to quality, tradition and lifestyle, Go Barefoot began with a love story between Alice, the daughter of native Hawaiian, Isamu Takabuki, and Clarence Hara, resulting in their elopement to Southern California. It has since evolved to become the go-to brand for original and authentic Hawaiian Print shirts.

Adsum logo hat

Manufacturing since the 1950’s with the same fabric company that they started with, the brand encapsulates the key attributes that we look for when sourcing a brand for Garbstore; authenticity, independence and expertise. We couldn’t help but fall for their colourful backstory combined with their diverse and dynamic offering of print shirts that truly reflect the beauty of Hawaii.

C.P. COMPANY Wind Jacket

The brand laboratory Innovating since 1975, C.P. Company was founded in Bologna by Massimo Osti who took inspiration from military and workwear design and combined it with continuous research on fabric and dying to create a look that shaped contemporary sportswear in the 80’s and 90’s.

PATERSON Inspired by his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey, German Nieves established the label in 2015 after cutting his teeth as a pro skater in his earlier years. With an overarching admiration for sneakers and street style, the collection combines these influences with a nod to old school tennis heroes to produce a line of functional designs infused with an element of sport.

Felpa Lens Crewneck Sweatshirt

The instigators of the Garment Dying process, C.P. Company were the first to use the technique of dying fully fashioned garments after manufacturing, a process which had a massive impact on the fashion industry as a whole. Today, the brand continues to find the perfect balance between tradition and innovation, taking authentic military and workwear and reimagining it with new materials and garment constructions.

As keen supporters of emerging streetwear brands, we were drawn to Paterson’s unique vision and German’s dedication to storytelling. Our seasonal buy includes graphic tees and logo polo shirts and shorts with references to 90’s tennis gear and skate wear. Advantage Long Sleeve Tee - White | Navy

For spring summer, we see new performance fabrics introduced through a collection of technical jackets and sweats. The Medium Jacket is designed to combat all the elements. Made from Nycra, a stretch nylon shell fabric with a Teflon water repellency treatment, it features an elasticated peaked hood with goggle details and press stud fastening to secure the jacket above the neck – a clear example of the attention to detail and purpose that goes into every design element.

With a strong focus on technical outerwear, function and detail – the collection is a hybrid of technical practicality and performance with timeless appeal. The less techy pieces are all about comfort, designed for people to enjoy wearing, where sports and culture sit side by side and collections are driven by personal interests rather than seasonal trends. “For athletes and aesthetes” their unofficial slogan states, definitely one that rings true for us at Garbstore. For SS18, we have bought into their popular Adsum logo cap alongside lightweight technical jackets, tees and hoodies in neutral tones accented with ochre and coral.

COUVERTURE & THE GARBSTORE

COUVERTURE & THE GARBSTORE, NOTTING HILL

WOMENS Come visit us.

Globally Sourced, Expertly Curated

Couverture & The Garbstore was conceived as a creative concept by Emily Dyson and Ian Paley in 2008. Housed in a three-storey converted period townhouse, this Notting Hill style haven transports you through an eclectic edit of womenswear, menswear, accessories and homewares. Focusing on championing emerging and independent labels with a story to tell, these carefully curated collections perfectly embody the ‘shop independent’ philosophy that Couverture & The Garbstore stand by. Run as two separate stores within the same building, Couverture was first established in 1999 after Dyson spotted a gap in the market for quality bed clothing and bedlinen. The name ‘Couverture’, the French word for cover, was settled on after she came across some 1950s advertising posters at a flea market in France. Originally founded as a standalone shop on the King’s Road, it later moved to Notting Hill which has been its home for the past decade.
