PCOS: What happens when ovaries produce more male hormones than normal? What is PCOS?
P
olycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormone imbalance that affects around 1 out of 10 to 15 women. There are multiple cysts of varying sizes on the ovaries. Girls as young as 11 can get PCOS. What are the symptoms of PCOS? · No periods, irregular periods, or very heavy periods · Pelvic pain · Extra hair on your face or other parts of your body, called “hirsutism” · Acne · Weight gain or trouble losing weight · Patches of dark, thick skin If you have some of the above signs, you might have PCOS. There may be other reasons that you have one or more of these signs. See a doctor to find out the cause. What causes PCOS? No one knows the exact cause of PCOS. We do know that most of its symptoms come from problems with hormones, or natural body chemicals. Many girls with PCOS have too much insulin, a hormone that helps turn food into energy. Extra insulin can cause the darkened skin you may have on your neck, behind your knees, and other places. Girls with PCOS also have extra androgens . Although people often t h i n k of an d ro ge ns a s m a l e hormones, females have them too.
The extra androgen can lead to acne, excess body hair, weight gain, irregular periods, and other PCOS symptoms. What are the tests done to prove it? If you have the above signs and symptoms, its best to visit your dermatologist/gynaecologist. · The doctor examines your skin for any darkening, facial hair, loss of scalp hair etc. · Ultrasound of the pelvic region generally is diagnostic · Blood examination for the hormone levels and sugar levels. Does PCOS mean I h av e c y s t s on my ovaries? The term “polycystic ovaries” means that there are lots of tiny cysts, or little sacs, on the ovaries. Some young women with PCOS have these cysts, but many others do not. Even if you have them, they are not harmful and do not need to be removed. Will PCOS affect my ability to have children someday? PCOS can cause problems with fertility (ability to get pregnant), but these problems usually can be treated.
Treatments include medications to lower your insulin levels and to help you ovulate — or release an egg — each month. If you are concerned about your ability to get pregnant in the future, talk to your doctor. Does PCOS put me at risk for other conditions?
Dr. AMEE DAXINI If you have PCOS, you may be at higher risk of other health problems. These include: · Diabetes · High cholesterol · High blood pressure · Heart disease · A thickening of the
endometrium , or the lining of the uterus, which can eventually lead to cancer if you don't get your period regularly Getting your PCOS symptoms under control at an early age may help reduce these risks. What is the treatment for PCOS? There is no cure for PCOS, but there are lots of ways to treat it. You may use a few of them or different ones at different times, depending on your symptoms. Lifestyle changes are great ways to deal with PCOS. Eating well and staying active are important if you have PCOS. I f y o u a r e overweight, losing weight may help with symptoms and may reduce health risks related to PCOS. Don't smoke or quit. Birth control pills are a very common form of treatment for PCOS. Birth control pills contain hormones that can: · Correct the PCOS hormone imbalance · L ow e r t h e l e v e l of m a l e
hormones, which will lessen acne and hair growth · Regulate your menstrual periods · Lower the risk of endometrial cancer (which is higher in young women who don't get their periods regularly) · Metformin is another medicine that may help with irregular periods and other PCOS issues. Metformin is sometimes used to help treat diabetes and may help keep your blood sugar closer to normal levels. Anti-androgens work to reduce the effects of the male hormones on girls with PCOS. They can help clear up acne and hair growth. You can also deal with unwanted hair through hair removal creams, and laser hair removal. There are lots of options to treat acne. Keep in mind that there are treatments for many of the problems that PCOS can cause. It is important to find a doctor who knows a lot about PCOS. You also want to feel comfortable with that person. Also, try to keep a positive attitude. And working on a healthy lifestyle, even when results take a long time, can help a lot, too! Remember that you are not alone. Many girls with PCOS say that talking with a counselor about their concerns can be very helpful. Think Skin (Kasavanahalli) Ph: 93796 37234.

Hegde explained that the forest department was also behind the success of last year's campaign. Commenting on the environmental impact of urbanization, green expert Vijay Nishanth expressed concern that the amount of green cover is going down
drastically. Speaking at a function organized by Samartha Bharata on World Environment Day at RV Teachers College, he said efforts were on to increase the green cover to compensate this loss. He said that the excitement shown by the youth in planting suggested that the green cover should increase. He also suggested that the government should go for sustainable development of Bengaluru and Karnataka to ensure a greener future.

Community Garden in Koramangala
O
n this month of World Environment Day, there is some heartening news. There is a growing trend among people to connect with nature and create more sustainable local food systems. A diverse variety of urban spaces are appearing across the globe. Inner city vacant plots and verges, community gardens and roof top gardens have appeared throughout the urban and suburban environments. Unused spaces are being converted into productive Continued from page 4 · Alternatively, apply honey or natural clarified butter (ghee) to your lips 3-4 times in a day. 4. Herbal remedy for Dark circles: These are common culprits that stubbornly refuse to go back! · Place a slice of either raw potato, cucumber or a cotton pad dipped in rose water over closed eyes · Leave it on for about 10-15 minutes. · You can do this even when you apply a regular face pack · Next, massage the area with almond oil before going to bed. 5. habitats which also help with community building. Part of the urban agricultural revolution is the development and spread of community gardens which are popping up in cities, on university campuses, schools, corporate offices and industrial estates. One community garden is ready and three plots are already booked. They have eight plots for community garden. This initiative is by the team of Namma Teachers Colony and Yuva Brigade, who want to grow their own
organic veggies. A water tank will be provided, and the major attraction is a fish pond which is getting ready. They started this because all the debris and garbage was dumped in these plots, so they cleaned them and took up this initiative. There was a bath tub thrown in the garbage. They took that and made a fish tank out of it for the community garden. It's a private site and they have taken the permission of the owners to start it. A community garden is typically a piece of land collectively gardened by
a group of people in a local community. Gardens can either be owned by individuals, local councils, not-for-profit organisations or some form of community trust. Gardens vary from region to region but generally provide fresh produce and plants, and foster community and connection between the local residents. ...................... Community gardens provide an opportunity for people to enjoy nutritious food at little or no cost. People who garden (or who live with
someone who gardens) tend to eat more fruits and vegetables, daily. They also provide fresh nutritious produce to the gardeners and their families. C ommunity gardens provide an opportunity for people from different backgrounds to come together and help foster a sense of o w n e r s h i p a n d c o m m u n i t y. Community gardens are generally monitored and managed by the gardeners, resulting in a cleaner space and a more active local community. May we see many more community gardens mushrooming across the city and country.
