oga is a wonderful invention that India has given to the world and the International Yoga Day has taken this invention to the world stage. As Guru Sri Sri Ravishankar says, "Yoga takes you close to your true nature. Yoga with its techniques helps you to harmonize with nature. Peace is our very nature,

and yoga leads you to inner peace." Smrti Academy has continued its efforts to spread the awareness of yoga among its students and this year marked the first official event at the institute. P Shivkumar, a well-known yoga teacher and a parent at Smrti was the Chief Guest. He mentioned the importance of yoga and shared its

significance and relevance in today's world. The Sanskrit root of the word Yo g a i s Y U J w h i c h m e a n s “togetherness”. Hence yoga in addition to its various connotations celebrates the “togetherness”. He stressed on the four important tenets of Yoga - Posture, Focus (Drishti), Breath and most important of all

“Discipline”. All the children and teachers participated in the event with enthusiasm and renewed vigour. Shivkumar demonstrated both simple and complex postures, and made the students and teachers perform some simple Asanas as well. ...................... Maths teacher Sunitha Singh reminded everyone of the Bhagavad Gita that says, "Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self."

he demand to shutdown the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) has become louder as the media was invited last week to press for this demand. On June 24, the Kudlu Harlur Hos apalya Somasundrapalya Parangipalya Residents Welfare Association (KHHSP RWA) made it clear that they are not ready to trust any officers anymore and the only solution left is to shutdown KCDC. The meet was presided over by eminent freedom fighter HS Doreswamy. The meet organised by United Bengaluru has sent the Citizens Wishlist for a Better Bengaluru to the Chief Minister and his deputy on June 19 and requested them to give time to meet with citizens to go over these wishlists for a better Bengaluru. Doreswamy also urged that the “CM should discuss

city's woes with citizens”. The KHHSP RWA used this opportunity to highlight the citizens' woes due to the ill-fated KCDC plant for over four years and that their 'right to breathe' was being denied all this while. “This is a gross violation of Article 21 under constitution of India and over 30,000 people are affected in the area due to the bad stench, polluted air, soil and water,” said Meera Mahajan, secretary of the RWA. “We also showed how the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)was dumped by KCDC and 4.1 acres of the adjacent lake land was encroached to dump the RDF.The lake is being polluted and the whole area has no lung space.” KHHSP also showed the water sample collected from one of the borewellsaround the KCDC, which was pale in colour. “The vicinity has many schools, hospitals and it's

impacting their daily livelihood and health due to the acute stench from KCDC on 24/7 basis,” said Kamesh Rastogi, another resident and member of the RWA. “The KHHSP RWA has demanded the closure of the KCDC plant with immediate effect as all the promises and assurances by various officers over the last five years have not resulted in any outcome and it's a waste of tax-payer's money to install an odour-control plant that isn't functioning. Citizens can't be duped and fooled and the officers can't be trusted anymore.” Last month, HSR resident and Congress spokesperson Kavitha R e d d y h a d m e t D e put y C M Parameshwar and handed over a memorandum to him on the KCDC issue. Efforts are on to convince the new government that this old issue needs to be addressed in double quick time.

merican, Indian delicacy with their own desi flavours. Pazzo is three restaurants rolled into one. The brainchild of the Ravichandrans, Naveen and Praveen, the newest food junction in HSR Layout is already a hit with the customers. Says Amit Pandey: “It’s an amazing fusion of Italian and South Indian cuisine. The pizzas are lip-smacking. This place is a must-try.” The success is not without reason. Naveen is not new to the food industry. After his bachelor’s in engineering in Chennai, he worked as a chef at KFC in the UK while pursuing his MBA. He came back to India and started his delivery restaurant with partners in Chennai, and ran it for two years. Later, he decided to move to Bangalore and do something unique in HSR by partnering with two others. But eventually, he decided to part ways to start a new restaurant on his own, along with brother Praveen and their father Ravichandran, who stood like a

innovation will be added soon. “It’s almost one month now and we are getting a good response from the customers. We make sure each and every customer is a happy customer,” says Naveen. There are over 80 reviews on Zomato already and most of them are 4-star ratings. The restaurant boasts of an open kitchen, so the customers can see how their dishes are getting prepared. There are no added flavours and food colours to keep the food hygienic. Pazzo means ‘Crazy’ in Italy and the proprietors are indeed making a crazy fusion of food to tickle your taste buds. Must try. But please note that they only serve lunch and dinner. They will be starting brunch soon. Stay tuned. backbone to pursue his dream. It took awhile in Bangalore to shape his dream and then he found the perfect place. "I gained knowledge about different cuisines while in the United Kingdom, and wanted to serve those delicacies in Bangalore, like fusing

Desi flavours to Italian and American cuisine. People generally go for the main Italian food or the American food but will not go to the same restaurant to have the same food again and again because of our food culture. So we started Pazzo so that

the people will start loving the pizzas and burgers with our own Desi touch. There is a team behind me to create the menus and offer ideas.” Naveen recommends Bread Bucket, Steak Biriyani and Fish Pizza, among others. Some more customised

Living healthy and happy with PCOS By Dr Amee Daxini

I

f you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), take charge of your health by learning all you can about it. You can start right here by learning about healthier habits and routines. If you take smart steps to cope with PCOS, you'll feel better physically, and chances are that you will also feel proud of yourself for taking good care of your body — and your future. ............................ Eating right and exercising are two terrific ways to manage your PCOS. They can lower your blood sugar to healthier levels, balance your hormones, reduce your risk of developing other health problems, and help you lose weight. And if you're overweight, losing even 5% of your current weight can help get abnormal periods back on track, mostly. ......................................

E ating R ig ht With PC OS Many young women with PCOS are overweight and have trouble losing weight. This is because young women with PCOS often have higher levels of the hormone insulin in their blood. Insulin's main job is to control blood sugar, but it also can make your body

any festival makes it merrier as gorging on rich and savoury dishes is an add on to the carnival of colours. To make your celebrations extra sweet, here is a unique recipe that would brighten up your spirits. This Thandai Phirni is a twist on the traditional Phirni recipe. Ingredients of Thandai Phirni ·

250 Gram Milk, full cream

·

1/2 Cup Rice (soaked in water for at least 3 hours)

·

2 Cardamoms (crushed, pods/seeds)

·

15-20 strands Saffron (soaked in 2 tbsp milk)

·

3 Tbsp Thandai masala powder

·

1 Cup Sugar (adjustable)

·

2 Tbsp Almonds & Pista, sliced

2. 2.Once it starts boiling, add the green cardamom into the milk. 3. 3.In the mean time, take rice and grind them coarsely in a grinder by adding a little water. 4. 4.Add sugar in the boiling milk, thandai, kesar milk and then add rice into it. Stir it for at-least 20 minutes or till it gets thick. 5. 5.When it starts getting thick, switch off the stove and let it cool properly. 6. 6.Pour it in kullads (earthen pots) and put it in fridge for 2 to 3 hours. Now take it out, garnish it with sliced nuts and serve it chilled. 7. 7.Serve Creamy Thadai Phirni as a dessert after your scrumptious meal or make it during holi to celebrate the festival.

store fat. Eating right can help you control your insulin, help you feel better, keep your heart healthy, lower your risk of getting diabetes, and help you lose weight. Losing even a small amount of weight if you are overweight can improve PCOS s y mp t o m s . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . What do I need to know about insulin and carbohydrates? The insulin level in your blood goes up after you eat. It goes up the most after you eat or drink something that contains carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are found in grains (bread, pasta, rice, cereal, and potatoes), vegetables, fruits, most snack foods (like chips, cookies, and candy), and sweet drinks like juice. Are all carbohydrates the same? No. If you eat two foods that have the same amount of carbohydrates, they

may have a different effect on your insulin level. This effect has a lot to do with the type of carbohydrate the food has. Carbohydrate foods with fiber are usually the best if you are trying to keep your insulin level down. Carbohydrate foods with a lot of sugar cause insulin levels to go up and make you hungry sooner. Try to choose high-fiber, low-sugar carbohydrate foods most of the time. So instead of fruit juice, pick up the fruit and eat. Replace white rice with brown/red rice. Eat at regular intervals and don't starve yourself. Eat smart and stay fit! T h e au t h or i s a c on s u l t i ng Dermatologist at Think Skin Clinic, Sarjapur Road. Permanent divider erected on 27th Main

A

t the KPTCL junction on 27th Main in HSR Layout, the makeshift divider installed a year ago was almost invisible at night (with no functioning streetlight), causing several to violate the one-way rule. When repeated pleas to the local corporator and traffic officials didn't bear fruit, one resident escalated the matter to the higher ups and got the situation resolved.

None of the local elected representatives made any effort to address the issue for a long time and the spot was turning into an accident prone zone. "I was finally fed up with the excuses, and tweeted about it to Additional Commissioner (Traffic) and also wrote to BBMP. Bengaluru Traf f ic Police (BTP) quick ly responded to my tweet and BBMP team along with traffic cops inspected

the spot and in a few days as discussed with BBMP, permanent dividers were installed," says resident activist Kavitha Reddy. ........................ Hope now even the citizens who were violating the one-way will follow the rules and ensure there are no more traffic jams and road rage. Many thanks to the traffic police and BBMP for taking quick action.

6 Tech Mahindra to train the differently abled at Samarthanam Jun 29 - Jul 05, 2018

T

ech Mahindra has always s u p p o r t e d t h e Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled at a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) level and is now taking a major leap by associating with the NGO in skilling its differently abled youth. The new Livelihood Resource Center (LRC) is located at Samarthanam but is not much different from its parent counterpart where the infrastructure enables easy accessibility to the

persons with disabilities defining and standing true to the concept of a barrier-free campus. The exclusive training program is an inclusive module that entails some of the major job-ready courses like BFSI (Banking Finance Sector and Insurance), BPO, IT, alongside Life Skills like C ommunic at ions, Pers ona lit y Development, and so on. This training is aimed towards increasing their chances at employment. The persons qualified to take up this

training program must have passed 12th standard or an equivalent course and must be in between the ages of 18 and 28. Says Samarthanam's chief, Mahantesh GK: “Most often, the p ers ons wit h dis abi lit ies are marginalised and isolated, narrowing down their chance of securing a mainstream job. The LRCs of Samarthanam established in more than 15 popular Indian cities are aimed towards encouraging inclusion at the corporate level.”

On average, about 2000 youth with disabilities are trained at his centers. Right from basic computers to communication, and personality development, the three-month training program makes them jobready. The next step is accessing them and facilitating interviews that suit t heir prof i le. The placement percentage is a healthy 70%, considering the impact at not just an individual level but also the positivity the family undergoes when the ward

dependent on them transforms into a self-sustained and self-reliant individual. Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled is dedicated to the empowerment and upliftment of the Persons with D i s a bi l it i e s ( P w D s ) an d t h e Underserved since its inception in 1997. Each LRC is accompanied by separate hostel facility for boys and girls, with free food and accommodation.

Right age for joining Preschool Are you thinking of enrolling your child in a preschool? Do you want to know at what age should kids be enrolled in a preschool? Read on to find more about the right age for preschool and other issues associated with it.

D

eciding a generalised right age for joining preschool is not an easy one. Parents have varied reasons for enrolling their children in preschools at differing ages. For majority of the parents, it is a practical decision for the parents if both of them are working. It is a big concern of keeping the little angel in the hands of a proper care group. So, it is important that they look for a group care which is developmentally oriented and that too pretty early. Usually parents enroll their kids to a preschool by the time the child is two to two and-a-half years old. But at times it is found that the child may not be mentally prepared to adapt to the environment away from home before the age of three. Keeping aside the professional lives, parents desire to provide a social experience to their children and so they opt for the preschool at a relatively early age. What do the Research Studies Say? There are several studies conducted that look into the ideal age for a toddler to attend preschool. It has been found that in order to determine this it is important to see what sort of experience he is having outside preschool. There are a lot of households that have a sort of home school environment. There are certain

·

·

attributes of such an environment like A wide array of books on children literature stacked away in cupboards that are within the reach of the child. These include story books, books on superheroes, comic strips and fairytales along with science journals for kids. There is a huge collection of hands-on educational toys. The kid has access to them whenever the need arises, be it for fun or for explaining something.

·

The family has an active social atmosphere marked by frequent visits by family and friends who are accompanied by children of similar age groups. These are all attributes of a regular preschool environment. So children who grow up in such an atmosphere do not require an early admission to the preschool. This is because the home itself provides a go o d developmental opportunity. Another important point here is that the parents need to devote a fair amount of time with the kid during the

learning and fun sessions. On the other hand, if the parents lack time or feel that it is a tad too boring to keep on reading the same stories to the child over and over again or playing the same game repeatedly, chances are that you will not be wholehearted in your approach. It will not be quality time that you are giving to your child as the kid requires honest attention. Under such situations, it is advisable to start the preschool early. Now from a practical approach from the point of view of the child, here are

Email: gardencityplus2013@gmail.com | Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gardencityplusnews

a few concerns that you need to note Social Concern It is usually found that a child can enjoy positive peer interaction when they are older than two years old. There are a few kids who enjoy adultchild interaction even before they are two years old. It is therefore by the age of two that the child becomes a social being. At the initial stage, the teacherchild ratio should be 1:3. Health Concern It has been observed that children living in group care units happen to suffer from ear infections. Although the care givers are generally careful with such issues, it is essential that the child is able to take the basic care of himself. This requires a minimum level of maturity that comes after the child completes two or two and-a-half years. Therefore early enrollment is a viable option if the parents are unable to provide the child with a positive environment that is conducive to development. So when the child is between two to four years of age, you need to judge the home environment and then decide whether you should consider an early or a late enrolment. The most vital factor is to ensure the child's comfortableness in whatever environment he is placed into.
