n 27 June, Minor Irrigation Minister Puttaraju visited Agara Lake. Readers may note that the Tank Development Act has transferred the administration of all water bodies from the Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority (KLCDA) to Minor Irrigation department. Even though many citizens and lake activists are opposing the amendments citing the lack of expertise in Minor Irrigation Department and that urban lakes are different from rural lakes, the Agara Lake Continued on page 3

A
two-day organic mela organized every month in HSR Layout on every first Saturday and Sunday of the month is celebrating two years of existence. The idea by a group of young professionals with a vision of fostering good health among the residents living in and around HSR has become a success story. Savayava Krishi Pariwara is a federation of taluk-level organic farmers headquartered in Thirthahalli. Each Taluk organization is an independent Trust, registered under the Indian Trust Act in 1996. The farmers are the trustees with a Board of Directors that elect or select the office bearers. These Taluk Pariwaras are members of this State Federation that helps and empowers the Taluk Pariwaras to function legally. Initially, their motto was to work towards solving problems, experimenting with new ideas which are more indigenous and using local resources devoid of artificial chemicals, among other things. It
grew informally throughout Karnataka under the guidance of the late M Purushothaman Rao, a farmer from Thirthahalli. He was awarded 'Krishi Rishi' for his noble work in this field. It focused its attention on environment friendly agriculture. – Organic Agriculture. Its vision and objectives were broadened, aimed at developing practical development strategies, which are not simply economic, but also based on moral spiritual and ecological values. Its major objectives are to promote Indigenous, selfreliant and organic eco-friendly agriculture, which is thoroughly sustainable, revitalize local health traditions, in which safe, nonchemical agriculture and diversified ecosystems play a central role and provide development education to young people, empowering them to
SUBRAMANYA play a role in constructive, nonpolitical development. A team of like-minded people in HSR layout is working with Savayava Krishi Pariwar to promote awareness about organic food, free from chemicals and fertilizers/pesticides for better health. The philosophy behind this is to support this group of farmers who have decided to put an

end to producing poisonous food, getting rid of consuming pesticide-filled food, connect between farmers and consumers through direct sales, avoid the middlemen to ensure that the profits reach the farmers, improve biodiversity and rural economy. This team from HSR used to visit Rastothana Parishad in C h a m a r aj p e t e t o b u y groceries from Savayava Krishi Pariwar farmers that is being held for many years. For two years, the team used to go to Chamarajpete to buy groceries. However, two years ago, they thought of bringing the farmers to HSR layout, so that the entire neighbourhood and surrounding areas can benefit from the mela since they will buy and consume pesticidefree food only to improve the health of people in the area. The pilot experiment succeeded,
prompting the federation to conduct a monthly mela in HSR. Today, it has reached a stage where the products brought here are falling short of the demand for the produce. The farmers hail from Gadag, Haveri, Gubbi, Bijapur, Thirthahalli among others. Organic food is priced higher than hybrid vegetables and fruits because the initial yield for a farmer is quite less when he switches to organic. Unless supported by a market for his produce, it is difficult for them to sustain. Hence this group has taken up this initiative to conduct regular melas by bringing them here. In HSR, Subramanya, an IT professional and a social activist is leading the awareness campaign from the front. The next organic mela is on July 7 and 8 . We b s i t e : h t t p : / / w w w . Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan in JP Nagar
S
wacch Bharat Abhiyaan was carried out on Ju ne 1 0 , a su n ny Su nd ay morning.Drom 9 am to 11 am, RBI Layout in JP Nagar 7th phase was a hub of citizen activism. Around 50 residents took part in a clean-up drive. They walked on 30 roadsand collected more than 25 sacks of paper, plastics and liquor bottles, among others, that were thrown on the roads and in the storm water drains. “This drive cannot make the city clean immediately, but it will wake up the sleeping people,” said one resident. “It will bring change in the mindset of those who throw garbage everywhere.” We feel that the change can be even better if civic workshops are conducted
across schools, so the students can educate their parents, who throw little while driving and walking on streets. If the adults are taught from their offsprings, the change will be more dramatic. We have also seenmany people coming in cars and throwing their garbage on roadside. This is the state of the so-called educated lot. Hopefully, more programmes like this and extensive coverage by the media, can indeed jolt such errant residents from their selfimposed exile from civic sense. Organised by RBI Layout Resident Welfare Association, it was supported by the BBMP staff in JP Nagar 7th phase. Residents split themselves into five different teams and each team covered four to five roads.

The natural way to treat dandruff
T
he white dead cells which the hair generally sheds from the Scalp are called dandruff. They are caused due to many reasons like vitamin deficiency, dry scalp, oily scalp, allergies, constipation and so many external and internal factors. Dandruff not only affects the scalp, but also leads to severe hair fall and pimples on the face. But there are so many best dandruff solutions available. Here are a few useful tips to get rid of dandruff. ......................... 1. Massaging scalp with Sesame Oil twice a week will give you good results. After one hour, wash your hair. You can use a mild herbal shampoo or Shikakai for washing your hair. ............................ 2. Mix lemon juice with coconut oil and apply it on the scalp, leave it on the hair for 30 minutes. Wash the hair with herbal shampoo. ............... 3. Use neem leaves water to wash your hair after shampooing. This will kill the bacteria which cause dandruff. This remedy even clears any pimple problems that you may have. 4. Mixing two to three drops of tea tree oil in your regular shampoo or in water for washing hair will be quite
effective in reducing dandruff. 5. Amla (gooseberry) is another remedy. E ating and applying gooseberry's juice with almond oil w i l l c u r e d a n d r u f f e a s i l y. 6. This is exactly an all-natural remedy. You can crush two tablets of asprin and mix it with the regular amount of your shampoo. Keep it on for 2 minutes and then wash off with re g u l ar shamp o o . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7. Another solution is the use of baking soda instead of shampoo. Scrub into the scalp well and rinse. It will dry your hair initially but later it makes the hair shiny and flake free. THE OTHER PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE People with dandruff issues
should use a separate towel, comb and pillow. Otherwise, it might spread to others who are using your things as well. Cleanliness is important to get rid of dandruff quickly. Washing your hair regularly and moisturising the scalp at regular intervals will avoid the problem. Dryness of the scalp and its over oiliness will cause dandruff. So keep the scalp moisturised enough with proper oils. Don't use harsh shampoos for treating dandruff. It will worsen the problem. Massaging using coconut oil or sesame oil before taking a head bath will avoid this problem and your hair will look dandruff-free and healthy.

Beware: Phone snatchers around
A
lady resident of HSR Layout has lost her mobile phone to two bike-borne thieves. Last week, she was strolling along 21st B Main at around 8 pm, when her mobile was snatched by two bikeborne assailants. The woman called the police control room (100) and filed a complaint. Her phone is still not recovered, but its best to be more
careful while walking during the day or night. It's best to hold the phone on the other side of the road and also keep a watch around you. When people are approaching closer to you, it's best to take to the footpath and stop talking to make them aware that you are alert and vigilant. Many residents have used this tactic to ward away many thieves. You can too.

Meditation is not a one-shot magic solution but a continuous pro c e ss . Ke e p pr a c t i c i ng everyday and you will gradually realise a state of calmness and peace developing within you.
·
Listening to smooth music helps you relax better.
·
Focusing on your breath or chanting a mantra like OM is
common, but if you prefer listening to music w hi le meditating, only listen to calm songs. A song could be calming at first but then change into rock in the middle––this is not appropriate, as it interrupts the meditating process. ·
Frustration comes with the territory. Roll with it––it's teaching you as much about yourself as the more peaceful side of meditation. Let go and become one with the universe.

Firstly, one needs to realise the apparent meaning of child means the set of qualities which makes a person distinct from the other. When such qualities emerge in the growing age of children, it is known as child personality development. Now when the pace of the world is advancing, it has become very crucial to make your child stand out from the rest and be unique. So how can this be achieved? The answer is simple. It has got to be worked out at the root level to bring the best out of them. Therefore, the development of a child in a way he/she becomes

The pre and primary school role:
The roles played by the preschools and primary schools have great significance over a child's personality development. It is therefore required to improvise t h e m e t h o d of i mp ar t i ng knowledge in them. Apart from games, organising cultural programs, learning disciplinary tasks, clay modelling, celebrating national and international festivals at school and upholding various competitions, there are points which often go neglected. These include the assessment of children based on how they are able to interact with their teacher and also among themselves and helping them understand the perks of learning things so that they become active participants. ·
The Secondary education role :
After a child finishes the primary education, most of the developments will have already taken place. But there are certain things which can only be taken care of during this phase. Here, it the role of the schools to make the children self-confident and motivated towards their prime goals. Regular workshops and seminars can be used as a platform to gain and share information. The ethics taught in school remains lifelong. So things like valuing life, caring for animals, respecting cultural diversity and religions should be positively fed into their hearts and minds. Some basic qualities like being humble, polite, non-gullible and generous should be taught in special classes of value-education. A period should be separately allocated for group discussions on various topics which can improve their intellectual skills and groupism. Lessons on music, art, craft, yoga and physical education should be given to one and all, right from the kindergartens. Proper nurturing by the school faculty can do wonders to the child development from a very appropriate age. It's high time that the school administrations adopt the effective learning to ensure the quality development of its students and hence the future of our country.
