he Issues: • Indiscriminate Garbage dumps all over the Sector at vacant plots, street corners and footpath have caused and still continue to cause grave inconvenience and << Residents Speak >>

distress to residents. The result-- PIGS and stray dogs are having a field day as never before!!

• While a good percentage of residents are aware of their responsibility on garbage segregation, pathetic indifference exists

in equally large numbers in not following environmental guidelines. They do not care and take steps to keep their neighbourhood clean.

This is biggest problem facing the RWA in their sincere efforts.

• When questioned, the pourakarmikas, at times, mention that they do not receive support from their contractor/BBMP staff.

They also complain of overwork. This notwithstanding, some irresponsible residents and shopkeepers, who lack civic sense, are equally to be blamed for the

state of affairs. Vegetable vendors and road side eateries that are functioning, encroaching road and footpath space are also dumping garbage proliferating pigs and dogs. Filthy, stinking garbage, sometimes with dead rodents, is lying all over the sector with pigs

and stray dogs feasting on them. • Further lack of focus, commitment and supervision at all levels of BBMP, to ensure that this basic civic issue is addressed seriously, is lacking .RWA keep raising these issues frequently with them and elected representatives. Anyamount of guidelines exists but they are not implemented in true letter andspirit. This is the ground truth.

• Honourable High Court of Karnataka has rightly come down heavily and issued strictures on BBMP on a

• We do not see any action/improvement on the ground.

Efforts of HSR Layout Sector 2 RWA • This is being reported with photographic evidence in all our meetings with Joint Commissioner, Bommanahalli Zone, Corporator, MLA, and all engineers concerned. Follow up action and letters have been sent by our RWA immediately after such meetings for BBMP’s action on PRIORITY keeping the elected representatives in picture.

• We reiterate a big responsibility also vests with the residents. Towards this, HSR Layout Sector 2 Residents Welfare Association has been and are holding awareness drives /rallies on segregation of Garbage at source frequently. The aim of such efforts has also been to educate /create awareness, amongst the residents and shopkeepers, against littering in the area, using vacant places for urinating /defecating and dumping of garbage.

• We have also been administering pledges to residents at all our important meetings on segregating garbage at source as per BBMP directions and keeping the Layout clean.

• We are/have requested schools in our Sector also to participate in this initiative on an important infrastructure issue.

• We are also regularly sensitising this issue through print and electronic media.

Our concerns • We have not seen any interaction by BBMP supervisors / engineers in creating this awareness amongst citizens from their side. This is primarily BBMP‘s responsibility.

• Unfortunately we are not getting any positive indications beyond the statement “tenders have been called”, “we will look into this” and such statements.

It is merely a ‘Chaltha Hai’ attitude.

• It appears to us that casual approach by BBMP and lack of resolving the issue permanently by elected representatives are responsible for this state of affairs .BBMP has the authority and rules and they must implement the same in true letter and spirit in the larger interest of health of citizens.

It may not be out of place to mention that our MLA, during the Janaspandana meeting held about 3 years back, in the BDA complex, admonished BBMP officials on the presence of pigs in HSR Layout when representatives from Sect 2 RWA showed large sized photos on the pig and stray dog menace in HSR layout. He assured all present that severe action will be taken against those responsible and directed civic officials present in the meeting for initiating stringent action on PRIORITY and arrest people responsible. There is no change in the status of pigs and stray dog menace, in spite of repeated representations from RWA s to BBMP and elected repre-

sentatives all these years/months. In fact, they have increased manifold to what it was 3 years back.

During our RWA s interaction with Joint Commissioner Bommanhalli on 18 Nov 14 ,on this issue, he categorically assured that action on a priority basis will be taken to tackle this problem with a permanent solution .This commitment was made in the presence of the corporator. A memorandum to the Joint Commissioner was given on that day covering this issue along with photographic evidence. There is no action till date.

Suggested Solution and way forward • We have been in the past suggesting certain steps to resolve this grave issue .We wish to once again reiterate them for appropriate action from the authorities concerned.

• Aggressive pro-active campaign must be organised by the BBMP by displaying posters/leaflets all over HSR Layout on garbage with clear “Do’s" & "Don’ts" in Kannada and English.

• BBMP staff must go around the layout on all roads and residential hubs preferably once in a fortnight and announce the same, to the public through a PA system.

• Include in this poster/awareness, announcements, information on levying of penalty to defaulters. This has to be done There is no other go, other than levying hefty fines .BBMP must exercise its authority.

• This publicity will create the required awareness among the residents /shopkeepers /floating population. This needs to be taken up by BBMP as a primary responsibility on a regular basis and not as a onetime measure.

• Educate school-children in the area on the importance of having a clean and healthy environment who, in turn, will educate their families.

• Awareness must be done through media both electronic and print. Also short documentary films must be screened at cinema theatres before the main movie.

• Signboards of authorized

garbage dumps in the sector must be displayed all over the Sector by BBMP. • Labour camps, unauthorized vendors and encroachments on roads and pavements all over the Sector must be evicted. They are all sources of garbage dumps in the layout which in turn proliferate the pigs and stray dogs.

• BBMP must closely monitor chicken/pork/meat shops for hygiene and sanitation and severe action must be taken on defaulters.

• Road side choked/blocked drains must be de -silted /cleaned/maintained regularly.

• Civic agencies must levy fines on defaulters instead of merely threatening.

Are the owners of pigs being protected? Are we to live alongside pigs and stray dogs?

BBMP must act in a focused, integrated and dedicated manner and take bold steps to ensure that the layout is free of stray dogs and pigs .Unless this is done laudable aims of Swatch Bangalore /Swatcha HSR Layout campaigns will be merely on paper.

ecoming parents is a blessing that every one wants to enjoy, but know that it comes with its own share of responsibilities and duties, for parenting children is one of the toughest tasks at hand. As parents, you are solely responsible for a life that is completely dependent on you for everything. While taking care of the physical needs is extremely easy, it is the emotional and psychological need that takes a prime importance in the overall upbringing.

When a child is in his/her growing years, he/she needs constant backing and support for everything he/she does. Motivation acts as a pillar for him/her, that

helps the child understand what he/she is expected to do and what not.

It not only keeps the child happy, but also encourages him/her to keep up the good work that he/she has been doing. In the long run, it is motivation that encourages a child to do good things in life.

However, not all children are the same and therefore, there are different ways to encourage or motivate these little kids.

Motivating Children Speak Words Of Encouragement Always remember to praise your child’s attempt at good work. Keep reminding him/her that what he/she did was the sign of a good boy/girl. It is the parents

who know the child the best and therefore, it is the parents who have to decide on the way to keep their children motivated. One thing that should be kept in mind is the fact that parents should always praise their children every time the little ones come up with a good performance.

Reward Your Child There are some children who love gifts or awards like chocolates and ice creams.

Tokens of appreciation should always be kept ready by parents.

Though you cannot encourage your child to have more sweets than what the doctor has allowed him/her to have, a candy once in a while for good work will do

no harm! These gifts would act as positive reinforcements for the children and would encourage them to work harder and better.

Show Signs Of Appreciation Words and rewards apart, you can also arrange for some fun posters inside the house which will remind your child of the appreciation that he/she received when he/she did something good.

For example, a poster with a smiley and a written account of the good deed on the part of your child in his/her room will keep him/her motivated towards good.

Motivation Is A Privilege Always keep in mind that motivation is a privilege

that good children should enjoy. Do not make kids feel that you are doing them a favor by rewarding them; else they will not want to do the same task once again.

Don’t be bias and reward only when the child actually comes up with a good work.

Note: Positive reinforcements in the form of goodies and chocolates are good, but don’t use them too often for else, chances are that the child would connect every good work with a gift. This can be problematic when he/she grows up.

Social Skills Before Kindergarten I

f your child is soon about to reach an age when it will be deemed “ready” to be sent to kindergarten so that it can take the first step towards brilliance and excellence; wait and zoom in on your own first day at kindergarten. Were you ready? Did you take the first step easily? Surely, an unspoken anxiety followed by loud squeaks is how it would have been. Moving out of the comfort zone of your parents’ love and loved ones’ care to an unknown territory where you didn’t exactly know why you were is what you must have been going through your mind.

But slowly you made your terms with it, albeit uncomfortably. Now it seems it all turned out alright, does it?

Well, it could have turned out a whole lot better and didn’t had to be an uncomfortable affair if your parents had worked on your social skills.

If at all you’re worried how your kid is going to react and respond to things, you should concentrate all your energies to this and read closely. Your kid doesn’t have to wait till kindergarten to begin learning, it can start now. Developing social skills of kids in an organized way will make them more confident at kindergarten. And sooner these social skills are developed in children, the better it’ll be for them in the long run.

Pre Kindergarten Social Skills Basic Skills Most of all, it’s important that children learn to communicate without hesitation at an early age. They should be able to communicate their needs and feelings in a socially acceptable manner. Make them understand that hitting, yelling, crying, and throwing stuff at others will only increase their troubles and will make things more difficult. They should learn to play with other kids, share, and take turns while being polite. By telling them that you’re proud of the things they’ve done right, you can improve their self esteem and confidence that will carry them in all stages of life.

Academic Skills Children love to learn, give them anything to learn and ask them if they can do it, they’ll definitely try to prove that they can. Take advantage of this make them learn alphabets and numbers by making it fun.

Start by teaching them the alphabet song, it’s easy to memorize and is catchy.

Blocks of alphabets can also be used that will not only make leaning fun but will help your child get a hold of what’s what.

Use the bedtime stories as a foundation to teach them how alphabets form words.

Colors and basic shapes are other two things that they should learn before heading to kindergarten. Using coloring books that feature shapes can be of help.

Independence

You can’t be there to take care of your kid during the kindergarten days and later; the kid pretty much needs to understand to take care of itself.

This can’t be taught though, it is only through conditioning that your kid will come to learn of it. Start early and whatever your child does, let it do it without much redirection or constantly having to scold for every little mistake.

Rather than babying the child, let your child play in a group unsupervised. However, at the same time, don't be absolutely indulgent and instead, keep a secret watch.

Let your child tie its own shoes, pack and unpack the bags, dress and undress, bath and wipe, use the toilet, and the likes on its own. Make the child remember your phone number so that if anything goes wrong, it knows which number to call to.

Right Vs Wrong The most important aspect that children should be made aware of as early as

possible is the difference between right and wrong.

Before kindergarten, the only guiding and authoritative figures that your children will come across are you: the parents. Not only should your children learn to know the difference between what’s right and what’s not, they should also learn to recognize and respect authority. Without going deep, teach them these rights and wrongs as do’s and don’ts.

What your children are likely to come across in school should be taught early in playgroups or in the social circle of little ones. These rules will guide them not only in kindergarten but also in community and life.

Everything your child needs is in these pre kindergarten social skills that are there to help and guide, protect and create prospects.

Make sure to have a firm hand over the proceedings without going overboard and strict.

Doctors Develop App That Calculates the Health of Your Heart

team of doctors here have developed a mobile a p p l i c a t i o n through which the health status of heart could be monitored at any time of

<< HEALTH >> the day by calculating the risks and giving recommendations on how to avert heart conditions in future.

The mobile application, named 'Heart Health Meter' (HHM App), was launched at a function in Thane last evening by a team of doctors and IT experts from Madhavbaug - an organisation of multidisciplinary cardiac care clinics and hospitals - on its 50th anniversary.

Explaining the modalities of the app, Rohit Sane, trustee and MD of Vaidya Sane

Trust (the parent organisation of Madhavbaug), said through 'HHM App' one can know the current health status of his heart.

"With increasing age, conditions like diabetes, excess weight, smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels damage our blood vessels and the heart, increasing our risk of getting a heart attack," he said.

The 'Heart Health Meter' calculates this risk and also gives you recommendations and tips on how to reduce or manage the risk, he said.

"Taking treatment early for these risk factors reduces chances of developing a major heart condition and getting a heart attack. The HHM can be downloaded and heart health calculated easily with it," Sane said.

The prime accused of 2002 hit-and-run case Salman Khan recoded his statement today at Mumbai Sessions Court at 11 a.m. and the superstar said that he neither caused the accident and nor he was drunk on that unfortunate day. He said that a false statement has been registered against him and the actor also put the blame on his driver Ashok Singh.

Salman said that his driver was on the driving seat and police did not register Ashok’s statement.

“The accident was not caused by me, sir,” Mr. Khan told Judge D.W. Deshpande.

Dressed in white shirt, Salman Khan reached the court with his advocate and spent nearly four hours in the court answering the questions of the public prosecutor. He also claimed that chemical analyser Bala Shankar is not an expert and did not maintain any procedures. He also said that he did not drink on the day of the incident.

Salman Khan said that he was stressed that night. “I was awake through the night at that time. And I was

stressed about this (accident),” he said.

He also denied that Constable Patil, the constable who succumbed to tuberculosis in 2007, was an eyewitness to the accident.

“He was sleeping at the time of the accident,” Mr. Khan told the judge in the sessions court.

He also said that it was his driver Ashok Singh who was driving the car at the time of the accident. “After the accident, my side of the door was jammed. So I jumped on the driver's side to come out of the car,” he told the court.

He also denied running away from the scene. “I was told that it would be easier to help the victims in my absence,” he said. “I went straight to Bandra police station,” he added.

During the case hearing, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan also moved an application regarding banning of media coverage on his case. But on Friday, court rejected his plea but directed the media to report only after the recording of Salman's entire statement is completed.

“Till the conclusion of the trial, the media cannot discuss any merits and demerits. No opinions should be aired.

Only factual reporting which depicts the entire and true picture, should be done,” the judge said.

Court ordered Salman Khan to personally appear before Judge JP Deshpande to record his statement under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code as it is considered a crucial stage in the retrial of the case before the final arguments begin.

The actor has been booked under Sec. 279, Sec. 337, Sec. 338, Sec. 427, and under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Bombay Prohibition Act, 1949.

In the wee hours of September 28, 2002, Salman Khan rammed his white Toyota Land Cruiser into the American Express Bakery in suburban Bandra, killing one and injuring four others.

Roseroot may have potential as alternative treatment for depression A herb used in traditional European folk medicine for over 3,000 years could be a potential treatment option for depression, according to the results of a new study.

he study, published in Phytomedicine, was led by Dr. Jun J. Mao, an associate professor of family medicine, community health and epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania.

Rhodiola rosea, also referred to as roseroot, has been used in traditional folk medicine to promote work endurance, increase longevity and promote resistance to several health conditions including fatigue, altitude sickness and depression.

Previous studies have suggested that roseroot could enhance mood by stimulating the receptors of

neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin in the brain that are involved with mood regulation.

Other research also suggests the herb affects beta-endorphin levels in the body.

In what is the first ever randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, comparison trial of roseroot extract, the researchers compared its effects on mild to moderate major depressive disorder with sertraline, a commonly prescribed antidepressant therapy.

Depression is both common and debilitating, with more than 19 million

Americans estimated to develop the condition each year. Depression is associated with a high risk of suicide and several simultaneously occurring disorders and physical illnesses.

Unfortunately, around 70%

of patients with depression have incomplete responses to therapy with conventional antidepressants.

These medicines can often have significant side effects that prevent patients from completing a course of

treatment.

"Furthermore, many individuals with more mild depressive symptoms weigh concerns over side effects alongside the limited benefits and costs of conventional antidepressant therapy," write the study authors. "Thus, it is not surprising that depressive symptoms are among the most common reasons cited by consumers to choose alternative therapy."

The aim of the current study was to assess the preliminary safety and efficacy of roseroot for treating mild to moderate depression, to find out if the herb could be used as a base for alternative therapy.
