L
ast week, SVR College in Somasundrapalya was the venue for the 'Green Ambassador' program by Hasiru Mithra, the citizen action group of HSR Layout. About 300 students took part on July 14 that was spread over two sessions. Resident Lalithamba BV explained the effects of plastics on earth and students took an oath that they will not use plastics in their life. They understood the ill-effects of using single use disposables and plastics. If you are reading this, you can do your bit, dear reader. Segregate waste into dry, wet and sanitary. Ban plastic usage from your life and say 'no' to single use disposables like wafer-thin plastic bags, straws and other plastic items.

Tree cutting, traffic jams greet vehicle users on Outer Ring Road Continued from page 1 began its work six months ago by erecting barricades on either side of the median to build the pillars for the air-conditioned suburban train. The green cover will not be disturbed in the area, claim officials, but residents are not sure and want the authorities to make a solemn oath that trees will be cut only there is no other alternative. The traffic police have asked the officials to flatten the Jayadeva flyover only the road underneath is widened to facilitate smooth
flow of vehicles. This is particularly crucial because there is no service road on this stretch of Outer Ring Road. The patients to Jayadeva hospital are also experiencing many hurdles in reaching the place for immediate medical emergencies. This is particularly evident during peak hours. The moral of the story? Avoid this part of the road if you can for the next few months until things stabilise. Avoid visiting any of the hospitals in this area to avoid unnecessary delays and choose other hospitals if you can.

How fliers hurt trees in our cities Stapled fliers can actually bring down trees
By Sanket Jain
I
magine someone nailing a poster onto your skin? Can you fathom the horrifying pain that this will ensue? Why do we think trees would not be affected similarly? Is it because we believe that trees are incapable of experiencing pain? Even if that is the case, would such an act be justified if it leads to the death of a tree? Trees are being used everywhere as a free-forall advertisement board, with all kinds of fliers stapled to them, from 'To-Let' boards to miracle 'weightloss' ads. Recent research has shown that scars left behind by stapled fliers can actually bring down trees. Typically, the nailing of posters harms the trees in several ways which is unknown to most of us. Wounds normally break the barks and in turn d am a g e t h e fo o d an d w at e r conducting tissues of the trees. Once the tree is nailed with posters, it is exposed to the polluted air and organisms. Bacteria and fungi may cause discolouration and decay of the wood. The decay can result in the weakening of the stems which eventually affects the overall life of the
Dr. Amee Daxini
tree. Scientifically, it is proved that decay cannot be cured completely but proper tree care can help in increasing the life of the tree. How does a tree respond to wounds? Trees respond to the wounds in two ways and they are 1. Compartmentalization 2. Development of barrier zone Compartmentalization Once a wound forms, the injured tissue does not heal or repair, rather it seals. There is no process of healing from inside out but the trees cover the opening by forming a specialized 'callus' tissue which is developed on
the outermost layer. The new wood growing around the wound forms a protective layer which prevents further infection and spreading it to other tissues. Thus, the tree isolates the older damaged portion by covering it with newer healthy tissues. Development of Barrier Zone Trees not only seal the damage from outside but also make the wood surrounding the wound unsuitable for the spread of decay organisms. As a reaction to the pathogen, the tree tries to set up chemical and physical boundaries around the infected cell. If the boundary setting mechanism is considerably faster and effective, then
the infection remains localised and does not spread to other parts of the trees. What happens when we puncture a tree wound with a nail? It can damage the cambium which is the area just beneath the bark where cells rapidly divide and increase the overall girth of the tree. It also can wound the phloem which is the group of cells responsible for carrying nutrients from the canopy to the roots; and the xylem, the cells that transport water and nutrients to the canopy. It is found that just 10 holes can cause enough structural damage and kill a tree.
The practice of nailing a poster into the tree is against the tree protection act, 1976. An NGO, Social Action for Forest and Environment (SAFE) is trying to spread the message of not nailing the trees. Vikrant Tongad, founder of SAFE, said, “RWAs of all the sectors need to be vigilant about people who put up signboard on the trees by nailing them into it. People are often unaware that this practice is not allowed, but until RWAs take action, most people would continue to put up advertisements. Nailing harms tree tissues and it can slowly rot the whole trunk over a period of time.” What you can do
· Avoid inserting screws and nails into any tree. · Stop people from sticking fliers on trees. · Volunteer for organisations which conduct clean-ups and Free The Tree campaigns. (Or just start one in your area).
Sunscreens: What to look for before buying?
There is a certain confusion about sunscreens and ideal SPF in all our minds. Most cosmetic brands are coming up with their unique formulation which they claim to be superior than the rest. But as a consumer what should I look for when I chose a sunscreen? Here are some known facts about sunscreens that might help you make an informed choice. One of the easiest and most effective preventative measures to fight skin cancer from the sun is the use of sunscreen. People are using products to fight the harmful effects of the sun for thousands of years, but the first iteration of what we would consider “modern sunscreen” wasn’t seen until 1946. Subsequently, SPF, or the Sun Protection Factor, was announced in 1974 and is now the international standard for determining the actual effectiveness of sunscreens.
According to research, SPF appears to have diminishing returns, which means that while an SPF of 15 filters out 93% of UVB, an SPF 30 would only filter out 97% of UVB. Realistically, blocking 100% of UVB is impossible. For a majority of people, an SPF of 15-30 is perfectly acceptable.
rule of thumb that “the higher nu m b e r t h e b e t t e r ” i s n’t necessarily wrong, it’s a little more complicated than that. SPF indicates the fraction of UV-Rays that actually reach the skin after application. For example, SPF 15 means that 1/15th of the burning radiation will reach the skin. If

time without any sunscreen at all. We’re prone to sunburns due to two different types of harmful rays, which take a short amount of time to travel from the sun to the surface of the Earth. UVA, which is a long wave that stands for ultraviolet A, and UVB, which stands for short wave ultraviolet B, both harm the skin and can cause skin cancer if we receive too much of either. UVA rays “penetrate deep into the dermis, the skins thickest layer,
causing premature aging and suppression of the immune system.” Once your immune system is at risk, so is the rest of your body. UVB rays, on the other hand, only come into contact with the surface of your skin, but are just as capable of causing damage. You’ve more than likely received a little too much sun on any particular day in your life and turned red – UVB rays are to thank for that. After enough overexposure to UVB, the surface of your skin can be considered permanently damaged.
No matter the SPF, however, people need to reapply their sunscreen after a certain amount of time. Applying it once before going out for the rest of the day is not sufficient protection against the sun’s powerful UVA and UVB rays. It’s recommended that you consult the label on your bottle to see when you need to reapply. The ideal sunscreen would have an SPF of 15 to 30, perhaps more if you’re fairly pale or light-skinned, it would be resistant to being easily washed off by sweat or water, and it would block both UVA and UVB rays, labelled as "Broad Spectrum" Sunscreen. Most modern brands carry sun lotions that meet this requirement, so go with your favourite!

Five- and 6-year-olds are starting to develop the cognitive skills necessary to understand basic monetary concepts, such as identifying coins, figuring out how to count change, and matching small amounts of money to items they want to buy. Aside from acquainting kids with the basics of economics, money lessons have other benefits. Money is a stand-in for many of the values we want to teach our children. If youngsters learn how to spend wisely and delay gratification, they will develop patience and planning skills in other aspects of their lives. Continued on page 8

A Man with a Lamp
Connect the Dots and color the Image
A hot potato Speak of an issue (mostly current) which many people are talking about and which is usually disputed
Once upon a time, there was a small town. There lived a man by himself who couldn’t see. He was blind. Yet, he carried a lighted lamp with him whenever he went out at night. One night as he was coming home after having a dinner outside, he came across a group of young travellers. They saw that he was blind, yet carrying a lighted lamp. They started passing comments on him and made a fun of him. One of them asked him, “Hey Man! You are blind and can’t see anything! Why do you carry the lamp then?!” The blind man replied, “Yes, unfortunately, I am blind and I can’t see anything but a lighted lamp which I am carrying is for the people like you who can see. You may not see the blind man coming and end up pushing me. That is why I carry a lighted lamp”. The group of travellers felt ashamed and apologized for their behaviour. Moral: We should think before judging others. Always be polite and learn to see things from others point of view.

Teaching Kids the Value of Money Continued from page 5 Your child needs to know there’s not a little printing press inside every ATM. Explain that the bank is like a big piggy bank where you keep your money until you’re ready to use it. Tell her that when you spend what’s in your account, it’s gone until you get paid by your boss and can put more in. She should understand that you can’t buy whatever you want and that you need to make careful choices about how you spend your money. Give your child a small allowance It should be enough for her to buy minor items, such as trading cards, hair clips, or ice-cream bars. The next time you go shopping, tell your child to bring her money if she thinks she might want to purchase something. What if your child has blown her wad and still begs for ice cream? Tell her she’ll have to wait until the next allowance day. If you give in, you’ve defeated the purpose.
If your child wants something big, such as a new hardcover book or a toy, help her figure out how much she needs to save each week in order to buy it. Make sure she has a clear plastic bank so she can watch her money grow. However, teach the kids to do something more worthwhile with their money than just spend it on themselves. Suggest and encourage them to donate part of their allowance to charity. Offer ways to earn extra cash Kids need to learn that they can increase the amount of money they have but that they have to work for it. Make a list of jobs your child can do above and beyond her routine chores, such as helping mom in the kitchen, washing dad’s car. If you have grown-up kids, then giving tuitions to kids. In this way, the children will know how to spend money wisely.
