Trees suffer after Kalyanotsava celebrations at BBMP Grounds Continued from page 1 reminder of what's happening to the open ground that was recovered after a five-year fight in the High Court by the residents. In their fervour to make the occasion look picture perfect, the organisers nailed the lights to the trees in addition to posters and flex boards wrapped to the tree trunks. Trees are public property and damage to them can be penalised under the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1981. What's more, nailing a tree can affect its outer layers. When holes are drilled into the trunk, the tree becomes vulnerable to
insect and fungal attacks. Decorative string lights strung around branches, especially near pubs, clubs, restaurants and eateries, affect the tree's resting cycle. During the late hours, even a tree is resting and artificial light can disturb its growth. BBMP Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad has said that no one has the permission to wrap cables around trees or stick paper on them. “These are unauthorised activities and we keep doing regular drives in all the eight BBMP zones to remove them,” he has said. “Once cases are booked, the same people do not repeat the
action. But new people come into the picture. This is a tedious yet continuous drive.” We urge BBMP Commissioner (Bommanahalli) Veerabhadraswamy to only permit sports events and desist from anything other than that. That is the only way, the grounds will be put to their best use. We also urge MLA Sathish Reddy to ensure that such non-sports events don't happen again. He has to make sure that the corporation officials are able to perform their duty without any political pressure when it concerns the renting of BBMP grounds.

I Day and sports day festivities at Oceanus Monarda
K
rishna Janmashtami was celebrated at Bhuvana Greens in Kasavanahalli on September 2. Also called Janmashtami and Gokulashtami, it is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, believed to be the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Bhuvana Greens Association and volunteers Ranjeeta, Tejal, Neepa, Rekha, Rasila, Umesh, Goldy and Pranati organised the event to much applause. ........................... Mothers had fun as they made their kids break the butter pot hung above their heads. Women of Vridavan tied their freshly-churned makhan at a
greater height off the ground, to make it harder for Krishna to reach the pot. But all in vain. Krishna with his friends would form pyramids and reach the pots containing the milk and yogurt. The ritual of Dahi Handi is an imitation of the actions of Lord Krishna. People surrounding the boys, sing songs and celebrate the day. The boy who stands at the top is called as Govinda and the groups are either called as handis or mandals. To celebrate the day, Lord Krishna temples are decorated, processions, bhajan, kirtan and satsang meetings are organised at various places to remember him and celebrate his
birth. Major Krishna temples organise recitations of the holy books Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita. This year, there was some confusion over the Krishna Janmastami date, while some said was September 2 while some celebrated on eptember 3. .................................... It is believed that Lord Krishna was born in an era of chaos, when evil was everywhere. There was also a threat to his life by his uncle King Kansa. After Krishna's birth, his father Vasudeva took him across Yamuna to Nanda and Yashoda, his foster parents in Gokul. This legend is celebrated on Janmashtami festival.
T
he residents of Oceanus Monarda apartment complex celebrated Independence Day with much fervour and enthusiasm. The national flag was hoisted and the national anthem was played to be soon followed by patriotic songs by the residents. The star of the day was a play on unity and secularism by the children. It was an emotionally charged act that won the praise of many. Monarda Sports Day was organized on the same day, with events for different age groups ranging from 2 to 14 years. There were also group games for adults and children alike. It was an exciting day that was followed by prize distribution and a sumptuous lunch. A fitting end to a great day. Onam celebrations which were to be conducted soon after Independence day, were cancelled after the natural calamity in Kerala. The volunteers joined hands with nearby apartments and associations to carry out the relief work for floodaffected Kerala and Kodagu.

Worshiping Ganesha, a giver of wisdom, warrants us to have the knowledge of conducting the puja in its true sense and significance. India. During the independence struggle, when India was fighting against the British Raj, Lokmanya Balagangadhar Tilak started Sarvajanik Ganesh Festival to bring the people together, a necessary collective platform to fight freedom movement which was otherwise restricted by the Raj. A spiritual platform was a must for the

On September 9, it will be held at the Ganesha temple park in Sector 7. The sessions will begin at sharp 10am and latecomers will not be entertained. Eco- Friendly Ganesha for all
ission of Trust promotes clay idols to reduce pollution caused by nobiodegradable material and importantly, the idols which are worshiped with so much devotion should be properly immersed. Ganesh made out of clay easily dissolves in water and will not break into pieces. It's a sad sight, post immersions at seaside as pieces are visible at the shore. Similarly, ponds and lakes bear the burden as well.

freedom movement to develop and strengthen. But today, we are facing another hazardous challenge to mankind, necessitating us to save Planet E arth from pollution. Hazardous material and industrial wastes have already polluted our seas and water bodies and taken a toll on our ecological system. These harmful pollutants will continue to cause great damage to the environment and there is an imminent need to get environment policies in place.
We have to inculcate the perspective of patriotism, spirituality and environment protection in our daily life. Ganapati is the God of Mother Earth. The festival is to be celebrated in keeping with the spirit of ecological sustenance. There are inconsistencies, which if left unaddressed, could typically undermine the true meaning of a festival celebration in the long term. In a nutshell, eco-friendly Ganeshas are a must to avoid the water pollution caused by the immersion of Plaster of Paris idols into the natural water bodies. The water pollution caused by chemical paints used on these idols. For some years now, we are observing a growing awareness about the water pollution caused by idols made out of Plaster of Paris. PoP idols may take anywhere between several months and years to fully dissolve. In addition, when chemical paints are used to decorate the idols, these paints contain heavy metals such as mercury and lead, which seep into the water as the idol dissolves. Red, blue, orange and green colours are known to have higher content of mercury, zinc oxide, chromium and lead. Even a single drop of mercury on a person's skin can be fatal. One drop in a 20-acre lake can make the fish poisonous to the birds, animals, and people that eat them. Make A Difference to the environment Say no to idols made of chemical, Plaster of Paris, clay, plastic, thermocol (polystyrene). Opt for natural, biodegradable material that does not pollute the water and its
surroundings. Use natural biodegradable colours for making Rangoli such as turmeric, henna, mehendi, rice powder, gulaal. Replace traditional bulbs such as incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFL). Use energy efficient CFL tubes instead of bulbs to save electricity. Coloured papers can also be wrapped on bulbs to give more colours rather than buying expensive bulbs. You can use artificial tank or artificial immersion tank instead of natural water source like river, lake or pond ........... for immersion. Collect separately after the festivals, the offerings of flowers, garlands often called “Nirmalya and other organic material and put them in a community built compost pit. This compost material can be used to fertilise your garden. Use paper flowers or natural flowers for decoration rather than plastic. Natural materials like cloth, wood, paper can be used to make dolls, puppets, and bells to decorate around the Ganesha idol. Avoid playing loud music which might create disturbance to others. Mridangam, Tabla and such low sound instruments can be used instead. Loudspeakers can create a problem to people inside hospitals, old age homes, and educational institutes. Avoid bursting firecrackers that makes huge sound like atom bombs and hydrogen bombs. Instead go for flower pots and rockets, but again in limited numbers.
