Garbage Dumps pave way to a Greener Garden City T

hanks to the continuous and vociferous campaigns undertaken by the RWAs in HSR and the few NGOs’ active participation, today, HSR can boast of a cleaner layout leading from the front, for the other areas in the city to take cognizance and follow suit for a garbage free environment. Garden City Plus, on its part has also been calling for a clean HSR and in its endeavor has contributed by relentlessly voicing on this issue. On the 24th January, Sunday, the sector 2 RWA along with residents of Somasundara Palya implemented their resolution in converting the black spots and the garbage dumps into a free area, rid of garbage and instead plant saplings on the entire stretch to ensure unpolluted air
graces them in future. Garden City Plus gave 20 saplings to be planted on the stretch from 24th main to the end of 27th main road, to
make a beginning for a cleaner HSR. Two benches were laid. A restaurant on this road, ‘Mughal Treat’, has agreed to cater to the saplings by
watering the plants. The exercise saw the participation of Brig. R S Murthy, Kavitha Reddy, Lalithamba and other members of
Annual Day of Samsidh Mount Litera Zee School Celebrated Samsidh Mount Litera Zee School – HSR Layout celebrated its Annual Day on 23rd January, at the St. John’s Medical College auditorium, but with a difference. The day was divided into two parts to accommodate more people and also not to disturb the routine of the tiny tots. This was a good move keeping in mind the effectiveness to have control of the programme and fashion it in a better manner with resounding success. Each session had different Guests of Honour. The students from Nursery to Grade II performing in the morning and the students from Grade III to X performing in the evening had a telling effect. Rather than going for the routine song and dance sequences the school based its programme on theme. The morning’s programme revolved around the theme of “the Greatness of Sun across various civilizations - THE RISING SOL”. The Chief Guest for this presentation was Mr.PannagaBharana – a rising director and actor who is making waves in Kannada film industry. For the evening programme the theme chosen was ‘THE GIFTED ONE’ – the story of Pandora’s Box. Through this
play, the students portrayed the thought that though the world is filled with a lot of negative emotions like jealousy, anger hatred etc, the positive emotion of hope and universal love make the people aspire for a better tomorrow. The Chief Guest for the programme was Dr. Anitha Ramachander – the Director of Adarsh College of Management and the Guest of Honour was Mr. Siddharth Jayakumar – an eminent motivational speaker and Ted – speaker. The children depicting the Sun’s value and importance was visibly a shaking narration for one to experience as though he was one among them and traversing. The importance was brilliantly portrayed by the tiny tots. It looked as though they are already professionals in the making. The second session was of great importance for the fact that it brought out the human values in the present World, taking the good positives and leaving behind the bad negatives, both in action and in thinking. Truly, the audience was mesmerised. Besides, the synchronisation was very effective.
the RWAs of sector and SSPalya. It was more fascinating to note that the residents came with their family members including the tiny tots in tow. The spirit of Kavitha Reddy, Lalithamba and Arthi Mahabalesha is too high going by the way of their enthusiasm in completing a task on hand. They were the people behind the motivation. The team of volunteers and the kids were the real inspiration behind the force of activity. It was a spectacle to watch. A special mention to the young girls Prachi and Paridhi for their inspired participation This cleanliness programme has ushered in a bright ray of hope

among the residents that the entire layout would now be maintained for their own benefit by none other than the residents themselves. The pourakarmikas also had their share in this by helping in the digging process, which fastened the proceedings. The BBMP has now gotten in to the act seriously now and were noticed to be giving warnings to some persons and ensured garbage was not dumped in the street corners and other isolated and vacant places. On query, it was known that the team of sector 2 shall be going on similar engagements on all roads and attempt to complete the entire sector very soon. This is a trend setter. HSR shall have a lot of greenery soon going by what they say and the expected result in similar fashion. ‘HaSiRu Mithra’ sponsored breakfast and snacks to all present there including the pourakarmikas.
HSR’s Success Story is Contagious
O
n the 29th January, HSR’s success story on plastic ban has started making waves and ripples across the zone. Satish Reddy, MLA, Bommanahalli Constituency, who flagged off the plastic ban campaign met with a huge positive response. The active and aggressive awareness programmes added to the residents and the traders respectively to match the requirements and the norms set to adhere to. This call has become a hit in the area with all complying to cooperate with the ban on plastic use. This success has now catching up and has become infectious that the neighbouring areas too have called upon the residents and have willingly offered to campaign for a plastic ban even in their areas. When Dr. Shanthi Tummala and Smitha Kulkarni went to Puttenahalli ward number 185 to meet the corporator, Mrs. Prabhavathi Ramesh to impress upon them the need of a plastic ban and its merits, to their surprise, they were welcomed by a host of other corporators of different wards
Sector 7, HSR now shows the Way to Zero Waste
A
n annual day celebration was held at the Ganesha Temple near Mc Donald road in HSR, 7th sector on the 26th January. Since it is an annual event, it attracts a large number of devotees who are seved with the Deity’s ‘Prasadam’ and along with it food is served. Around thousand devotees had come to offer their obeisance to the Deity on the Republic Day. In order to comply with the ban on plastic in HSR, the devotees had carried with them cloth bags and paper bags. For those who did not carry they were given paper bags containing the prasadam. Leading from the front, Mr. Premkumar of sector7, RWA, had spearheaded the entire proceedings of the event and ensured that it was a zero waste programme. HSR Citizen Forum volunteers Shubha, Sharada, Gracy, Nirmala, Raghunath, Lalitha, Divya, Anusuyaand in particular, Padmashree and Rajani who took charge of the zero waste mission and completed it successfully and ensured the wet waste was composted. BBMP driver Nandeesh also took part on the occasion. Pooja offerings were made in cloth and paper bags and steel glasses were used instead of
plastic cups and a paper lining for the table ensured that plastic was totally unused. The food served in banana leaves were collected in separate drums including zero waste and sent for composting. This only went onto prove that however large an event could be, if managed well, zero waste can be ensured. The will power of the residents of HSR and the Temple authorities’ cooperation led to the success of this event with zero waste. Kudos, HSR!

like Jaragenahalli, Bommanahalli, Arakere and Bilekahalli. The ward officials and the traders were detailed on the advantages to which they responded positively. Both Shanthi and Smitha took turns in explaining the items that are banned and the other alternatives they can look for instead of the plastic items. Joint Commissioner Muniraju gave his assurance and full cooperation to all
traders, RWAs and volunteers present that all officials will be deployed to make sure that anti plastic campaign is a success. BBMP deserves applause for taking up this initiative with a strong result oriented approach. Plastic ban in BTM layout starts on February 6th, 2016, and Puttenahalli Plastic Ban starts from February 7th, 2016. Amazing start to 2016!

Residents speak Dear Editor, A team of volunteers have gone to many schools in HSR, Somasundarapalya etc to talk about the ban on plastic and what alternatives can be used to children during the Assembly session. The schools have been very cooperative in allowing us to address the children and allotting some time for us. The children have been amazingly responsive, supportive and surprised us by asking intricate questions on plastic and the alternatives. We have asked them to be the soldiers in this war against plastic and they have given us a roar of support!! We have gone to Lawrence School, JSS, government schools in Agara, Somsundarapalya, Brilliant, Chinmaya, Vibgyor so far and more schools are slated this week. In some schools, they gave us time in their annual day and we performed a skit or street play with the same message - Priya Muthukumar wrote a lovely play for us to enact and we have been using it everywhere. We have had a crazy time covering all the schools and communicating the anti plastic message. I think the children are the best ambassadors who can be the watchdog for the shopkeepers and the parents. They are the ones who will bring about change, like they did for Diwali firecrackers reduction. A HSR Resident

Soft Drinks fake your Well BeingCauses for Diabetes and BP
S
oft drinks is sometimes a staple drink for all of us, be it a child, adult or an elderly person. We all love sipping on the caffeine-laden sweet drink that makes us feel wow! Be it any occasion, a wedding, friend's birthday or a meeting, we all welcome that cold bottle or a can of soft drinks. We usually overlook the harmful effects of a soft drink, as we are too addicted to it. Some even say that soft drinks are harmless and prefer to drink it when sick. This is true , however, in some way, as the caffeine in the soft drink makes you feel mentally and physically alert. This is the way in which soft drinks fake your well-being by giving you a false kick of pleasure like the addictive drugs such as heroine. Soft drinks are the main reason for growing diabetes, high blood pressure and weight gain in adults. Hence, you must limit its consumption, as it can also push you towards more sugar cravings and make you yearn for more sugary foods. Therefore, read the article to find out what happens to your body when you drink a can/bottle of your favourite soft drink. After 10 Minutes, Your Body Gets Filled With Sugar Having a can of
soft drink is equivalent to having 10 teaspoons of sugar at once, which is far more than the daily recommended allowance of sugar. The phosphoric acid added in the soft drink will also prevent your body from reacting to the excess sugar. This is the reason you don't vomit after having so much of sugar. After 20 Minutes, Insulin Gets Secreted To Remove Excess Sugar Your blood sugar rises, which causes the secretion of insulin to remove the excess sugar from your blood. Your liver converts this excess sugar into fat. After 40 Minutes, Caffeine Enters The Blood The caffeine present in a soft drink completely enters into the blood vessels. This causes your blood pressure to rise and the pupils of your eyes to dilate. Hence, you will feel active and alive, as the adenosine receptors in the brain will be blocked by the caffeine
molecules. After 45 Minutes, You Get A Kick You will feel happy, as the pleasure centre in the brain will be stimulated. Your soft drink will have the same effect as that of any addictive drug such as heroin. You will get high or a kick and will experience a peak level of happy emotions. After 60 Minutes, Your Body Loses Calcium There will be loss of calcium from your body through the stools, as the phosphoric acid present in soft drinks will bind with calcium, magnesium and zinc present in the intestines, preventing their absorption into the body, and thus removing them from the body in the form of stools. Harmful Effects On The Liver Consuming too much of soft drinks can put your liver under a high risk of damage. The chemicals present in a soft drink may also cause cirrhosis of the liver. Risk Of Diabetes And Obesity Soft drinks are the main culprits behind a high sugar level in the blood, as a single can of soft drink can fill your body with a good amount of sugar. The sugar present in soft drinks is 100 percent more than the daily recommended sugar intake. Hence, this causes weight gain and diabetes.

A Girl made to beg in a Railway Station – Samarthanam Saves
T
here are still people who treat the female child as an unwanted guest in the family. Lakshmi and Bhimanna had three girls. They left them in a railway station to fend themselves at a tender age of four, five and six. They just abandoned the children and absconded. While two of the sisters managed to give the slip and escape from the tormentors who had found them and made them to beg, one girl could not as she was too young and small. In fact, her hand was also twisted when she refused to beg. Once, while begging, destiny was kind to the girl when she chanced upon meeting a few Mahila Sangha (Women’s Organisation) members who took her with them and ensured a decent living and is now studying that she reached Samarthanam – the in the grade III and wishes to Right Place. Ever since, she is having become a doctor.

China’s loss is India’s Gain I
ndia is now considered to be the fastest growing economy, thanks to the slowdown in China. While India is at the top, the global economy is on a decline which may not be good news, hence we may have to temper our growth rate and its expectations. The Indian growth rate is not the highest but is to be viewed from the decline in the other economies. China’s growth rate at 6% was less than half of what it grew in the year 2007. Possibly, this is a deliberate act of deceleration on the part of the Chinese government which we may not be aware of as it switches flanks from an export and investment led economy to a domestic consumer led economy. Capital is flowing out of China over the last 1 ½ years and the cumulative outflow is possibly placed at about 1.5 trillion USD. This has also led to capital controls including on the stock market. The global economy seems to be getting into a shock mode every 7-8 years. In 2007 we had the Great recession followed by European sovereign debt crisis which led to the insolvency of Greece (running crisis) to the geo political tensions in Syria & Iraq followed by the worries emanating from China. The tapering of the Chinese demand coupled with the quantitative easing in the US has led to the meltdown of the commodity prices, including Brent crude. Iran’s supply of oil post lifting of
index is inflating at 6.3% though the wholesale price index is growing at 0.06%. Since food prices are stable at the wholesale level but growing by over 10 times at the retail point. This being true we see a larger increase in income from domestic trade. The group of Transport, Communications, Trade and Hotels is seeing the fastest growth at 11.7% in the economy. These statistics are also backed up by bank credit in semi urban areas where credit has grown the fastest at 13.7% up to September reflecting presence of large bulk food traders.
sanctions and the re-emergence of Shale gas as an alternative to the Middle East oil has further led to the decline. The Chinese meltdown is having a slow impact on all asset prices and every possible country including India. The stock indices in India has now retreated to pre- BJP government levels of May, 2014. While India’s GDP growth rate as made available by the Central Statistical Organisation is pegging us at a healthy pace of 7.3% in 2014-15 and 7.2% in the first half of 2015-16, there many a parameters which suggest that we may be growing at a slower pace. The 3rd quarter results of major corporates indicate that the aggregate net profits have declined. Base rates of commercial banks are at about 9.5% which
A ‘Smart City’ to have better Living Conditions
T
he Indian government on Thursday released a list of 20 cities of the country that are to be developed into Smart Cities. These cities come from 11 states with New Delhi as the only Union Territory. But what makes a city really smart? There is no one definition of Smart Cities or what makes a city smart. In the simplest of words, it is a city with better living condition, with better infrastructure and facilities such as better housing, roads, 24x7 water and electricity, sanitation, healthcare, etc. But again, there is no definite definition of smart cities. It has to be quantified and put together in order to make it more meaningful and understandable. However, according to the Mission
Statement and Guidelines of Smart City released by the Ministry of Urban Development, these are the qualities that make a city ‘smart’. • Adequate water supply • Assured electricity supply • Sanitation, including solid waste management • Efficient urban mobility and public transport • Affordable housing, especially for the poor • Robust IT connectivity and digitalization • Good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation, • Sustainable environment • Safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly • Health and education.

implies that the manufacturers still have to dole out double digit returns. Index for Industrial Production rose by about 3.9% for the Apr-Nov’15 period. Agricultural growth is just about 2% in the first half owing to a weak monsoon. Bank credits have grown by half of 2013 at 8.9%. Export growth has been negative for the past 13 months and is slowing down over the last 3 years. Gross fixed capital formation grew by only 5.2%. In the first half of 2015-16, Government’s final consumption expenditure grew by only 3.3%. The heartening fact is that the private consumption expenditure has grown 7.1%. In a country like India, consumption expenditure is a function of income and cannot be viewed as a demand. As of Jan’16, the consumer price
India’s current growth is possibly linked to food price inflation and the rising margin between wholesale and retail food prices. We need to make a choice as to whether to celebrate our India’s growth as a fast growing nation in GDP terms leaving consumers to suffer with high food prices or settle for a lower rate of growth which may be in line with the rest of the world. My answer is as good as yours. (The author, Dr. L. The Dangers of disposing the expired Credit and Debit Cards when Ansari entered the IDBI ATM opposite Siddhivinayak temple around 11.55 pm, the security guard instantly recognised him." "Ansari would connect the laptop to the DRM and swipe the dummy cards, erasing all the old data on them. He would then swipe the cards again to upload data belonging to a completely different user. The mastermind had provided Ansari with a whole list of users and their card details, along with the ATM PIN numbers. The police are yet to confirm how the racketeers got hold of confidential card details of the victims." Ansari had made at least 25 such transactions in the past four months, with each transaction siphoning off about Rs 1 lakh from the victims. "Ansari worked on a commission basis. He got 10 per cent of each transaction. He got into this crime due to his drug habits. We are investigating about who else is involved in the fraud," Kulkarni said.
‘Moon Villages’, a Springboard for future Missions
V
illages on the Moon, constructed through cooperation between astronauts and robotic systems on the lunar surface, can become a reality as early as 2030, a group of scientists has predicted. Scientists are exploring the idea of "moon villages" that can serve as a potential springboard for future human missions to Mars and potentially other deeper space missions. In order for that vision to become a reality, scientists must first determine if the resources on the Moon are as significant as we think they are. "We keep talking about lunar resources but we still need to demonstrate they can be used a (that) they are, in fact, reserves," said Clive Neal, a planetary geologist from the University of Notre Dame in the US.
The ground truth verification of deposit size, composition, form and homogeneity requires a coordinated prospecting programme as a first step. "The next step would demonstrate extraction techniques followed by refinement of the product into usable commodity. A successful programme would then clearly demonstrate that lunar resources can enable solar system exploration," he said. Neal's research explores the origin and evolution of the Moon, focusing on the petrology and geochemistry of returned samples coupled with geophysics and other remotely sensed datasets. It looks at the geophysical instrumentation and investigations of the Moon, formation of impact melts, and more basalt petrogenesis. In this regard, the European Space
Agency (ESA) hosted a symposium titled "Moon 2020-2030 -- A New Era of Coordinated Human and Robotic Exploration", in the Netherlands recently. According to Neal, who attended the conference, the ESA meeting highlighted technology development in terms of precision landing, robotic sample return, and cryogenic sampling, caching, return and curation.

Low Blood Pressure Deprives Brain of adequate Blood Supply
H
ypotension is the medical term for low blood pressure (less than 90/60 in counts). A blood pressure reading appears as two numbers. The first and higher of the two is a measure of systolic pressure or the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats and fills them with blood. The second number measures diastolic pressure or the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats. Optimal blood pressure is less than 120/80 (systolic/diastolic). In healthy people, low blood pressure without any symptoms is not usually a concern and does not need to be treated. But low blood pressure can be a sign of an underlying problem -- especially in the elderly -- where it may cause inadequate blood flow to the heart, brain, and other vital organs. Chronic low blood pressure with no symptoms is almost never serious. But health problems can occur when blood pressure drops suddenly and the brain is deprived of an adequate blood supply. This can lead to dizziness or lightheadedness. Sudden drops in blood pressure most commonly occur in someone who's rising from a lying down or sitting position to standing. This kind of low blood pressure is known as postural hypotension or orthostatic hypotension. Another type of low blood pressure can occur when someone stands for a long period of
time. This is called neurally mediated hypotension. Postural hypotension is considered a failure of the cardiovascular system or nervous system to react appropriately to sudden changes. Normally, when you stand up, some blood pools in your lower extremities. Uncorrected, this would cause your blood pressure to fall. But your body normally compensates by sending messages to your heart to beat faster and to your blood vessels to constrict. This offsets the drop in blood pressure. If this does not happen, or happens too slowly, then it results in postural hypotension. The risk of both low and high blood pressure normally increases with age due in part to normal changes during aging. In addition, blood flow to the heart muscle and the brain declines with age, often as a result of plaque buildup in blood vessels. An estimated 10% to 20% of people over age 65 have postural hypotension. The cause of low blood pressure isn't always clear. It may be associated with the following: • Pregnancy • Hormonal problems such as an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), diabetes, or low blood sugar(hypoglycemia) • Some over-the-counter medications • Some prescription
medicines such as for pressure, depression or Parkinson’s disease • Heart failure • Heart arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) • Widening, or dilation, of the blood vessels • Heat exhaustion or heat stroke • Liver disease What Causes a Sudden Drop in Blood Pressure? Sudden drops in blood pressure can be life-threatening. Causes of this type of hypotension include: • Loss of blood from bleeding • Low body temperature • High body temperature
• Heart muscle disease causing heart failure • Sepsis, a severe blood infection • Severe dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea, or fever • A reaction to medication or alcohol • A severe allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis Who Gets Postural Hypotension? Postural hypotension, which is low blood pressure when standing up suddenly, can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons, such as dehydration, lack of food, or being overly fatigued. It can also be influenced by genetic make-up, aging, medication, dietary and psychological factors, and acute triggers, such as infection and allergy. Postural hypotension occurs most frequently in people who are taking drugs to control high blood pressure (hypertension). It can also be related to pregnancy, strong emotions, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), or diabetes. The elderly are particularly affected, especially those who have high blood pressure or autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Hypotension after meals is a common cause of dizziness and falls after eating. This is most common after large meals containing a lot of carbohydrates. It’s believed to be caused by blood pooling into the vessels of the stomach and
intestines. Several drugs are commonly associated with postural hypotension. These medications can be divided into two major categories: • Drugs used to treat high blood pressure, such as diuretics, beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors • Drugs that have hypotension as a side effect, including nitrates, erectile dysfunction medications, drugs for Parkinson's disease, antipsychotics, neuroleptics, anti-anxiety agents, sedative-hypnotics, and tricyclic antidepressants Common causes of naturally occurring postural hypotension include: • Dehydration and electrolyte loss, which may result from diarrhea, vomiting, excessive blood loss during menstruation, or other conditions • Age-associated decline in blood pressure regulation, which may be worsened by certain health conditions or medications Certain diseases can also cause postural hypotension. These include: • Central nervous system disorders, such as Shy-Drager syndrome or multiple system atrophy • Nerve problems, such as peripheral neuropathy or autonomic neuropathy • Cardiovascular disorders • Alcoholism • Nutritional diseases.

My daughter Varsha came up with the idea of this Masala pasta and i tried with a small batch of pasta last week for her and she enjoyed it a lot. Last weekend i made this for all of us and sharing the recipe of Indian style Masala pasta recipe here. INGREDIENTS: PASTA (ANY VARIETY) 2 CUPS SAMBAR POWDER 1 TSP ONION 1, TOMATO 1 TURMERIC POWDER 1/4 TSP MIXED VEGETABLES* 1 / 2 CUP OIL 1 TBLSP MUSTARD SEEDS 1/4 TSP CURRY LEAVES FEW
PAV BHAJI MASALA 1 / 4 TSP METHOD: Cook the pasta according to the instructions. Drain the water and keep it aside. Slice the onions and finely chop the vegetables and tomatoes. I used carrots, capsicum, corn kernels, green peas, broccoli, and cauliflower. In a pan add oil and throw in the mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add in the sliced onions and when it turns pink add the tomatoes. Cook in a medium flame till the tomatoes are cooked. Add in the chopped veggies and add the sambar powder, salt ( just for the veggies), turmeric powder and the pavbhaji masala. Mix well and cook it for sometime , let the vegetables be crunchy and not over cooked. Add the cooked pasta to this. Before adding the pasta run the pasta in cold water in a colander. This is to get moisture to the pasta. Mix well and cook in a low flame for 3-4 minutes. Switch off the flame. Serve hot .Note: You can add any veggies of your choice. Instead of sambar powder you can add pepper too.
