Koramangala too Embraces Plastic Ban

O

T RAMESH

n Sunday, the 14th of February, the Valentine’s Day, when several people were playing cupid, residents of Koramangala chose to play something serious for the society. Close on the heels of what HSR and BTM layouts did recently, the redients of Koramangala were vociferous enough in calling for a single use plastic ban. Women came in large numbers in support of the call and many of them were even seen covering and dressing themselves in plastic bags. This unusual picture caught the common man’s eye and eventually an eye-opener for the many assembled and witnessed to take cognizance of the fact of the ill effects of use of plastic and its related items. Hundreds of residents turned up for the flag off in the august presence of some honourable dignitaries like Mr. Ramalinga Reddy, MLA, BTM Constituency and Transport Minister, government of Karnataka,

Mayor Mr. Manjunath Reddy, Mr. Kumar Naik, Commissioner, BBMP, Mr. Subodh Yadav, Special Commissioner SWM, Chandrappa, Corporator, Mr Hemachandra, Joint Commissioner and many BBMP officials, residents, traders, street

vendors, school and college students. After seeing the success stories of the same episode in HSR and BTM layouts, the Koramangala residents decided to also enforce.it in this area. Residents of HSR and BTM too joined the event and saw the crowd

multiplying by the hundreds as time went by. The residents though slow but steady have started realizing the fact that use of plastic has become a menace. It chokes and kills animals, birds, pollute water bodies and are almost non-recyclable. It suggests

the toxicity it has to pollute the environment. A partial ban is currently in place and will soon get the tag of a permanent ban on plastic. The RWAs in Koramangala has played a huge role in the enforcement of a plastic ban. Largely, black spots are created only due to the plastic bags ehich will be under control once it is banned. The traders and the commercial establishments have also jumped in support of the call from the residents to ban use of plastic. The residents feel that once this is strictly in force then burning of garbage and littering them under flyovers and burning them will be rid of. Ms Padmashree, Ms Anne Joseph, Mr. Venkat, and many others took part in the campaign. The members of the SWMRT team (Dr. Shanthi Tummala, Ms.,Smita Kulkarni, Ms. Malini Parmar, Mr. Ramakanth) had a big role to play in this event to take shape.

Segregation and Composting – the Nagarjuna Apts’ Way

In the year 2011, the residents association of the apartment had decided on this operation and ensured littering was totally controlled from the occupants. Later, to still improvise on that, the association decided to compost the

Opinion Plus The Role of BBMP, RWAs and the Residents on Segregation and Garbage Littering Q. Given the direction that the waste has to be segregated at source now by the residents, else they will have to ready themselves in facing a penalty; do you feel that the same is being followed both by the residents and the BBMP contractors? What is your take on it? BBMP should lead from the front and set an example in executing this. It is not enough to just penalize the residents who have erred in not segregating the waste at source. But to my dismay, I see that the pourakarmikas and the contractors concerned are least bothered to justify the direction. The sweepers just sweep the road just as a ‘formality’ and the leaves shred from the trees are mostly left behind without being cleared. The job is half done and the rest left to the nature to take care. It is felt with deep regret that

this lackadaisical approach towards achieving a cleaner environment on the part of the civic body will ensure defeat of the very purpose. BBMP has failed in its duty of proper follow-up. The contractors will have to be pulled up on such issues. Mr. Nair Resident and member of HSR sector 2, RWA. Despite bringing in so much of awareness and practical demonstrations at various points on segregation methods and process including composting of waste, it is heartening to note that only around 50 percent of the residents have strictly adhered to the direction laid to segregate waste at source. This is by no means acceptable. In this case, the residents are responsible, since they are the ones who will

Website: www.gardencityplus.com

take the initiative in ensuring cleanliness and the betterment of the society in the process. They will have to more involvement in this regard and ensure a clean environment. It is a more pathetic story when it comes to the civic agency’s role in segregation. As compared to the residents’ contribution, the BBMP is only doing 10 percent of its job. The cleaning, sweeping and clearing of the waste and debris is not done to the expected level it should have been done by them. Clearly, BBMP is not following up on this issue which is of prime importance. The BBMP is keen on penalizing those who do not fall under the category of segregating at source; but what is the penalty to be levied on the civic body for their shortcomings? So far as the roads are concerned, the pournakarmikas are seen regularly on the field of work, but the quality of work seems to be shabby and half done, notwithstanding the irresponsible acts of a select few residents in

aggravating the mess making it a cesspool. Strict measures will have to be in place with highest quality of supervision. Else, this will lead us nowhere. Mr. Chandrashekar Resident and General Secretary, HSR sec 2, RWA. There have been multiple instances of all the RWAs and the Federation of the RWAs of HSR in raising this issue of segregation at source for a social cause. The Honourable Court has rightly directed the residents to play their part by segregating their own waste at source (at their homes) in order to prevent foul play and not handing the ‘Garbage Mafia’ the ownership of setting their own demands. The residents have taken it forward to associate themselves of the good work done by the volunteers, BBMP and the HSR federation and the RWAs in terms of littering of garbage and keeping it to the bare minimum. Some people lack

the steam to keep the enforcement in good stead. But most of them have fallen in place for the change and getting used to it now. It is better now than what it was a few days back. On the contrary, it is sad to note that both the parties involved (residents and BBMP) have faltered in ensuring clean and smooth functioning of the process. There seems to be a shortfall in implementing and executing the same. BBMP should spruce up equipment availability in terms of mechanization and cleanliness of the garbage pickers or collectors who are struggling with their hands and feet in to it. It has left it to the respective RWAs and the collectors to handle the situation. It has to be streamlined and supervised properly by having surprise checks in certain pockets to enforce the rule stricter and harder. Dr. L Ravindran Resident HSR sec 1, General Secretary, Federation of HSR RWAs

But the wet waste (in green bins) and dry waste (in red bins) are totally used by the apartment workers and through sale of the papers. The photographs are self explanatory wherein the entire process of filling, segregating, collection, composting and curing is captured. The task of accomplishing this has not been on a select few. It is a

collective effort from all the apartment residents which has borne fruit. To name a few, Ms. Shaheen, member of the committee of the waste management, Mr. Dileep Vangasseri, secretary, and members like Girija and Pallavi Mahajan along with the other resident members have been instruemental in achieving this thus far. If only people can take the cue from these and follow to take care of their wastes at home, there will be no necessity to wait for the government agency to do this work in a shoddy manner and residents blaming. The entire blame game will be over. Well done, Nagarjuna Greenridge Apartments! Keep it up!

"Urinary Tract Infection in Children -A Cause of concern to parents" - What you should know?

B

y definition recurrent UTI would be a culture positive febrile illness of temperature more than 39 degrees centigrade with > 50,000 cfu® in a child who has had a documented urinary infection in the past. The fact that 1.7% of boys and 8.4 % of girls will have at least one urinary tract infection (UTI) by the age of 7 years shows that UTI is a common problem in children. Up to 30% of this group of children will go on to have one or more UTIs during their childhood. Girls are at a higher risk of recurrent UTI than for boys. The practical clinical question is how do we identify such cases, confirm our diagnosis, find out the reasons and protect children from further complication. Diagnosis of UTI is usually made by history of febrile illness and pathologic urine analysis and culture. The collection of an uncontaminated urine sample and rapid transport and processing is important for reliable diagnosis and adequate treatment. Establishing the occurrence of a UTI from historical data in children could be difficult. The symptoms vary widely according to the age and range from vomiting, failure to feed and passing a

cloudy smelly urine in the very young, to dysuria and loin pain in the teenager. A history of febrile illness of temperature >39 is helpful and a urine analysis with a significant positive culture is necessary. Additionally, a detailed note of the voiding pattern, frequency of passing urine, the caliber of the stream and whether the child wets by day and night is immensely helpful in detecting children with DES. A history of bowel problems like constipation and fecal soiling is also present in a large number of these children. 1. Urine Analysis and Culture: The collection of a clean specimen of urine is of paramount importance in arriving at a reliable diagnosis. The conventional methods used are: • Bag specimen in the infants • Midstream sample in both infants and older children • Catheterized sample • Suprapubic aspirate In the very small infants many units will use a minicon collecting bag adhered to the skin around the genitals after cleaning and drying the skin. Whilst this method will most often deliver a sample, contamination from skin organisms, accidental detachment

of the bag and contamination during transfer into a culture container is often possible. For these reasons, though convenient it is unreliable as a clean catch sample. A midstream sample of urine when possible is a reliable method. The parent must however, receive detailed instruction how to collect the sample: • The container should be kept covered (not screwed) so that when the event occurs it is readily available. • The initial and the terminal stream should not be collected. • The cover of the container should be immediately screwed on; the container is labeled and delivered to the lab as soon as possible.

• It is not necessary to wash the genitals in boys; the perineum of girls is preferably washed with regular soap and water. A catheter sample is very reliable but obviously invasive. A trained person should do the catheterization as a strict aseptic procedure. There should be no delay in the transport and processing of the specimen. It is our experience and well documented in the literature® that laboratory standards vary and errors in processing have confounded clinical decisions. A suprapubic aspirate is by far the most reliable method of collecting a representative sample of urine for analysis and culture. The drawbacks are that parents are very unhappy and it requires a fair degree of skill and at times ultrasound guidance. However, in the context of recurrent UTIs it has proven invaluable in providing good guidance to clinical decisions. The results of culture must be correlated with that of microscopic examination; is it a new organism or the same identified in earlier infection? Is the growth significant? Eschericia coli is the causative organism in more than 80% of cases in the first instance and perhaps in many

recurrent infections. Structural or functional anomalies that predispose to recurrent UTI should be ruled out by further investigations like MCUG, ultrasound, DMSA scan and cystometry. Primary vesicoureteric reflux, detected by MCUG, is present in over 30% of children who have first UTI. These children are treated conservatively with chemoprophylaxis and bladder training. In those who are not compliant with medical treatment or develop recurrent UTI, operative methods are used depending on both gender, age of child and associated problems. Dysfunctional elimination syndrome causing voiding problems is a hitherto neglected issue responsible for recurring infections. Cystometrography helps identify such patients and with medications and simple surgical procedures like a Mitrofanoff stoma or instituting CIC can aide in keeping the bladder empty and prevent recurring infections. Dr Ashley J D’Cruz HOD & Sr. Consultant, Paediatric Surgery Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, HSR Layout.

HSR Sector 4 in action on Segregation and Garment Factory Workers ‘Educated’ on Segregation Garbage Clearance

T

he heat is on! The segregation and garbage littering fever has caught up momentum in HSR layout yielding the desired results. The latest in the fray is the sector 4 RWA. Perhaps the association has been doing its homework in its own way without drawing any media attention so far. But, on the 18th of February, the sector 4 RWA, was on a spree bringing in awareness on the segregation among its residents and found that there were a few defaulters and were warned and also educated in the process. There were instances where it was seen that thought he residents had indeed segregated waste. It was not up to the mark and not satisfactory since they were merely confused on the items that belonged to the respective groups of wet, dry and the rejects. On such places the residents were accordingly educated and made sure they under-

stood it well enough in not repeating the mistake. The entire exercise was an effort though exhilarating due to the presence of the school children which compelled the residents to come out and listen to the methodology of segregation. During the activity, the roads were also rid of garbage and other little wastes being littered including tree leaves. The BBMP pournakarmikas had a job to do and were shown the shoddy job done by them in certain pockets. In the meantime, the garbage collection van drivers and collectors

Website: www.gardencityplus.com

were also instructed, during a session set aside exclusively for them, to follow the set guidelines which were seen to be violated in many pockets in the 4th sector. Hence they were strictly told to follow the lane discipline by not missing any lane or street, not to accept any garbage in plastic bags or covers, not to demand money for the job done, blow the whistle on entering a lane or street and request residents also to follow rules set. Led by Mrs. Vijayalakshmi, President of sector 4 RWA, the activity was ably supported by BBMP, the students of Freedom International School, HSR Citizen Forum, Mr. Chandrashekar, General Secretary, Sanju Bhandari, Bhagya Ratna and Saroja Janardhan, all members of Sector 4 RWA.

n another initiative from the volunteers o HaSiRu Mithra, Ms. Lakshmi and Meena took upon themselves in calling on the garment factory workers and brought awareness among them on the methods of segregation and the fine thereof if not adhered to and all the ill effects o use of plastic. To their dismay, it was found that many of them were not following the segregation process and still are using plastic covers and bags, though a few of them said that they are aware of the fact that the garbage issue at Mandur was a fearful experience for the people living in those extreme conditions. On February 19, the two of them went to M/s. Royal Fashions and M/s. Mother Earth garment units and spent around two hours addressing them in batches to create awareness on the importance of segregation at source and the methodology involved therein and the adverse effects in using plastic covers and bags. In the two sessions they addressed around 250 employees to have the best impact. In fact, the response drawn was

in the affirmative and the positive approach in volunteering to henceforth segregate is the rich harvest that these two women have achieved. The factories are situated between DHL and Uber buildings. Their major complaint though was that the garbage picking van seldom comes to their areas to pick the filth. Hence they are forced and compelled to litter. Assurance was given that the van shall be made available with periodic inspections. The other allegation was that they are made to cough up money for the garbage to be collected. They have now agreed to comply with the rule of segregating at source and get rid of plastic use for their own benefit.

‘Ha SiRu Mithra’ teamed up with a corporate to make footpaths safer

H

asiru Mithra teamed up with B.PAC and Syngene to make the footpaths on 27th Main road in HSR Layout pedestrian-friendly recently. B.PAC is working with Hasiru Mithra (the HSR Layout residents’ initiative) and Syngene on a neighbourhood cleanup drive. This will be a sustained campaign to drive corporate social engagement that brings corporates, neighborhood communities and BBMP together to clean, drive behavioural change and monitor progress. Employees and residents of the neigbourhood work together to beautify their locality and appoint wardens who will keep watch on the neighbourhood to ensure

that the cleaned up areas do not relapse into their original state. Cleanup drive on January 30th The 27th main road in HSR Layout is one of the prime roads in the locality. The plastic littered on the footpaths and overgrown weeds make it unfriendly for pedestrians. B.PAC, in association with Syngene International Ltd and Hasiru Mithra, a citizen group of HSR Layout led by B.PAC’s Civic Leadership Incubator Program (B.CLIP) alumnus Kavitha Reddy took up the beautification drive on Saturday January 30th. Around 50 employees of Syngene International, team B.PAC and residents of HSR layout cleared up the litter and removed the weeds. The team also painted the wall and planted saplings along the footpath. The saplings planted, will be looked after by the nearby commercial entities. The drive also witnessed enthusiastic participation by the children of Syngene employees, who were on an unusual weekend outing. They helped with painting the walls and used their talent to beautify the area.

The initiative was supported by BBMP. Muni Raju, Joint commissioner of Bommanahalli Zone extended logistical support to make the cleanup drive a success. Revathy Ashok, CEO & Managing Trustee, B.PAC said, “B.PAC is very pleased with Hasiru Mithra’s engagement and initiative. It is only with citizens’ watchful eyes that there will be pressure on the system to keep our

neighbourhoods clean. We have many more interventions planned in the coming months for driving holistic solutions for waste management.” “We are very thankful to Syngene and its employees for having partnered with us in this drive, and look forward to a continued engagement”, said Kavitha Reddy, a B.CLIP alumnus and Hasiru Mithra leader. Kamesh Rastogi, a resident of HSR Layout sector 2 said,

“The participation of B.PAC and Syngene employees has motivated residents, and more people are now showing keen interest in volunteering for the neigbourhood. We are also glad that commercial shops close by have taken the ownership to look after the plants and the cleaned up area” “Syngene is very happy to be associated with B.PAC and an active citizen group like Hasiru Mithra. As a corporate citizen of Bengaluru, we believe that we have a responsibility towards our city and have a role to play in keeping it clean and green. It is this belief that drives us to organise such cleanliness activities. Our objective is to give a platform for our employees to participate in such activities, as well as to sensitise the citizens on the importance of maintaining a clean and neat surrounding. This is our fourth such drive and we are very happy with the enthusiastic participation of our employees and their family members,” said Sandeep Nair, behalf of Syngene. Since HSR has a compost unit and has voluntarily banned plastic, such programs on a sustained basis will enable creation of greater awareness among citizens.

‘Neerja’ : Sonam Kapoor`s Superlative Performance

We know Neerja Bhanot’s story, but are curious nevertheless to see how it unfolds on the silver screen. Will the director go in for over-dramatic scenes in the name of ‘creative liberty’? Or, are we going to witness a film that is too ‘filmy’ to be inspired by ‘real events’? Perhaps the brickbats Airlift faced prompted the filmmakers to flash a disclaimer at the start: The film is not a biography or a documentary on the brave Pan Am air hostess. For a second, it almost seems like a warning. But minutes into the film, all doubts are swept away. The movie is likely to be memorable for most, especially for Sonam Kapoor fans. The film is set on September 5, 1986, when the ill fated Pan Am Flight 73 takes off from then-Bombay. Neerja Bhanot, flying as chief purser for the first time, is readying for her morning flight while four terrorists affiliated to Palestine’s Abu Nidal Organisation are offering their last prayer in Lyari, Karachi. (Lyari is still one of the most dreaded places in the South Asia region.) The terrorists manage to board the

flight with their ammunition, but the full extent of their plan is reduced when Neerja alerts the pilots, who run away. The real trouble then becomes the boarding zone where 360 passengers are left at the mercy of some trigger happy cynics. Here is where an ordinary modelturned-air hostess rises to the occasion and the rest is history. Neerja shows Madhvani’s meticulous planning as a director, even though it tilts in favour of some melodrama. The film arrives straight to the point and starts building a tension that remains with the audience till the end. Parallel narratives between Mumbai and Karachi bring out the conflict that

ensues, and you subconsciously begin rooting for Neerja. Madhvani adds personality to Neerja through her family: Her mother Rama (Shabana Azmi), father Harish (Yogendra Tiku) and two brothers absolutely adore Neerja and her zest for life. She is shown as a well adjusted happy person, but little do we know that Neerja carries a past that tugs at the heart. Madhvani shows his craft at this juncture, portraying a vulnerable heroine with a composed exterior. Here, the power of a good script is also evident. At 122-minutes, the film stretches towards the end, but you are helplessly ensnared in its magic. There are a few surprises in the film; Neerja loves Rajesh Khanna, so does her family, and this star-fan connection becomes a defining moment in the film. It’s an effectively narrated story that we all know, for why else will you look forward to unraveling a plot that has been widely documented. It makes you rise and salute Neerja, the extraordinary story of an ordinary person. And, who could sum it up

better than her favourite star Kaka: Zindagi lambi nahi badi honiye chahiye babu moshay (Anand, 1971). In these times of misinterpreted jingoism, Neerja teaches us the real meaning of standing tall.Neerja is a milestone in Sonam Kapoor’s career. Not just because it’s a good film, but because she carries it entirely on her shoulder. She looks earnest, scared, benevolent and bold, all at the same time. You should see her in the scene where a terrorist frisks her: She aces it with a panache seldom seen in Bollywood. Shabana Azmi is very impressive as Neerja’s mother, her grip over emotional scenes are very visible. The other person who deserves applause is Yogendra Tiku who plays Neerja’s father. The emotions reflect so swiftly on his face that you can see your dear one there. Such films where the filmmakers need to work in the same time and space zone are difficult to execute, but you’ll be surprised at the finesse with which Madhvani has shown most sides of Neerja’s personality. She falls, rises, falls again and rises again, until she emerges as that one name which will be associated with Pan Am Flight 73 forever.
