H S R Layout Gifts ‘Clean Image’ for Kannada Rajyothsava

The campaign led by them had its intentions clear in having the streets, pavements and all the poles laden with bills, stickers and posters to be rid of them and alongside sweep the roads of all filth to create awareness again in the minds of the public about the importance of having cleanliness around for a healthier living By Our Correspondent

W

hen the entire City, State and the Country is driving home a point on cleanliness for healthy living, and discard hazardous materials around to make the neighbourhood an eco-friendly environment, there are some who are unwilling to lend their support for their own advantages. Marred with arguments with a resident, who is running an eatery outlet, over a campaign to remove all bills stuck around the layout and also display of flex boards and banners, which have been banned by the government, the campaign took off well on November 1, at 9 am for the entire day, initiated by ‘Swacch Bharath Abhiyan’. The campaign led by them had its intentions clear in having the streets, pavements and all the poles laden with bills, stickers and posters to be rid of them and alongside sweep the roads of all filth to create awareness again in

the minds of the public about the importance of having cleanliness around for a healthier living devoid of debris and waste and ensure clear walking space too for the pedestrians. The campaign was ably supported and sponsored by Sakura India Foundation, Ameya Health, HSR Citizen Forum and Samartha Bharatha while

the ground staff of BBMP participated in the cleanliness drive on a holiday. The Corporator, Mr. Gurumurthy Reddy supervised the campaign as also Mr. Sridhar, Director, Sakura India Foundation. Many streets were swept neatly and the entire 19th main was a beauty to look at. The area opposite Sai Mandir

was cleaned up, while the other team involved in pulling and tearing the bills and posters stuck and the flex boards were brought down. In the process, the team encountered some resistance from an eatery outlet, the employees of which were skeptical whether to resist or abide. The team asked the employees to remove the flex board from the pavement as it was obstructing pedestrian traffic, to which the reply was that since it was the inaugural day, they may be permitted to display for some more time and shall remove it later. Ultimately, they were convinced to display it by the side of the hotel without disrupting the pavement users and the matter was solved. The team moved on with their work by cleaning a garbage dump and painting the wall. The owner of the outlet Mr. Reddy, who is a responsible citizen, suddenly barged in the

In support of this activity, Mr. Satish Reddy, MLA, Bommanahalli constitu-

ico Layout Police force, who have extended their hands to help spread the Awareness of certain common crimes which have been troubling innocent people since ages now, are still leading the community policing chart among all. An Awareness program was conducted on 28th October, 2017 for close to two hours in the evening, at Ramsridhar Apartments, BTM Layout Stage 2. The occasion was graced by the special dignitaries JAC Sri Vidhya Shankar and Dr Javed who joined this cause of making people more educated and alert about the most common crimes that can affect us in our routine lifestyle, how to avoid them by remaining aware, and if at all they happen to trouble us, how and where to report such incidents. Under the initiative of Police Officer PSU Nataraj and the other ASMs, Convenor Chengappa, Ravindra Hosakeri, Keerthy Chethan, and Harish, this event made a point. Many people gathered around the venue to watch the video and the other commentaries and guidelines from the dignitaries present there, and learnt a lot about Online frauds, the correct way of using ATM cards safely, Children and Women’s Safety, Chain

Snatching, Vehicle Thefts, Neighborhood Safety and Security, Station Contact Numbers, Suraksha App, Namma 100 App and many more such essential rights that most remain ignorant about. Kudos to the committed and devoted police force at BTM Mico Layout, who forego their sleep and take up long working hours to support and give all the comfort possible to the public! Many such events are lined up in the upcoming year as well, and which, for certain shall reduce and then gradually completely eradicate the usual mishaps and harassments that disturb the commoners lives!

no need for the government to send its members to do this job at all”. Finally after all the arguments and counter arguments, the owner also agreed to take part in the activity supporting the effort. But, the ugly scenes could have been avoided. The team consisting of Dr. Shanthi, Divya Venkatesh, Roopa, Krupa, Sunil, Ratnakar and Jyotsna of HSR Citizen Forum, Dr. Satish and Akshata of Ameya Health to name a few who led the campaign from the front. Small children too took part in this activity and cleaned the place, walls and also painted to their best of abilities. Ameya Health conducted a free medical camp in which around 200 people participated. Citizens’ participation is necessary for any government’s initiative to be successful, if worthy. HSR layout is proud to have celebrated Kannada Rajyothsava in this fashion by going to the streets to ensure road cleanliness,

Learn it or Loose it

t’s a very common sight these days to see flex banners put up in every nook and corner of Bangalore. However, we must know that although

The management has all rights to remove the banners, who haven’t sought proper approval procedures before displaying them on public areas.

these are put up, purely with the thought of promoting the sales either prior to opening up the store, or to advertise the new products, yet there is a prior intimation and permission that needs to be mandatorily taken.

One such example is that of Fresh Basket which had been displayed on the boundaries of the park, without prior intimation, and hence the authorities were bound to remove it up rightly. This should go away as a learning to all those vendors, and owners who plan to promote products in the upcoming days. This shall save money, time and avoid unnecessary hassles.

This troubled him and he instantly announced that the bank shall donate a few books. But the purpose of visit was to have an ATM Counter in the building since it can cater to that m a n y number of houses in one shot. What followed was a bunch of 120 books pertaining to children’s reading including comics, books from Amar Chitra Katha, Mythological, Historical and Social topics. t is never an easy call to take to become a model let alone aspire to be one. Fashion is one terrific field and industry in which one has to strive a lot to be even known among the circle, becoming famous and crowned is far away. Hard work, sheer hard work pays here as there are a lot of intricacies involved here like putting the right step forward and the walking style and the pace and the distance of each step. The list thus goes on and on. To become a model or participate in a fashion show before marriage is not new and odd. But having been married for a whole of 23 years and with two grown up children, the life gets that much tougher to even manage the house and the profession one is already in. Here is a standing example of achieving what is aspiration, an ambition, a goal set and an aim to work for with sheer commitment to outshine one and all and come out in flying colours, making a dream come true, by winning the crowning glory of a pageant in October, ‘Mrs. India Universe’. Ms. Uzma Nayeem’s journey for the Title Mrs. India Universe began on

July 30, with auditions in Bangalore at Big Brewsky, Sarjapur Road. She was selected to represent the city to take on the rest of India. She added that her Mother and her Husband encouraged her about not worrying about the outcome. Mrs. India Universe 2017, one of the most memorable events that took place during October 22 – 27, The Castle Mewar, Udaipur. Living, Healing and Being through Food

esides breathing and sleeping, eating is life's most vital activity. We cannot sustain ourselves without eating. But we seem to have forgotten this, spending very few hours (or even minutes) gathering, preparing, and eating food. Food gives us energy, and allows us to think, move, and prosper. But we are no longer attentive to the impact of food on our functioning. Our food preferences and choices are now influenced more by food companies, ad campaigns, and the notion that "faster is better." We don't always (or perhaps even often) pick foods based on what our bodies need for optimal wellness. Our busy lives and stress prevent us from taking the time to really nourish body and soul. We eat for convenience, not health. What is Food ? All that we consider today as nutrition, food, is really just a secondary source of energy. Stamp Paper Scam Mastermind Telgi is Dead

Abdul Karim Telgi, 56, who held India almost by the scruff of the neck, is dead. A kingpin of Rs. 32,000 crores Stamp Paper Scam, who was housed at the Parappana Agrahara jail suffered from multiple organ failure and finally had a cardiac arrest and eventually breathed his last at 3.55 pm on 26th October. A man who was a nobody, who became a somebody and rose to be an everybody in quick span of time, had to meet his end in this way as was his wont. He adopted the shortcut method to earn and fame followed, which was short lived. He was caught in 2001 for printing fake stamp papers and selling through his numerous network of agents in around 18 States. He was convicted for a 30 year term and fined Rs. 10 Billion. A real rag to riches story, which reminds one of the many Dons making it big, being paupers before entering into this business! Initially, he was selling jackfruits behind his house near the railway station for making a living and earned his money for his education. He was a B.Com graduate and had worked In Saudi Arabia. A small stint at a travel agency in Mumbai made him a businessman, owning a travel agency himself sometime later. He then started the fake passport business and thrived by printing fake documents including visas, marks cards, I D cards etc. He was arrested in Mumbai in 1992. A contact in jail put him into the big league when he came out on bail and started the fake stamp paper and developed high level contacts. An anonymous caller put him in the docks by exposing the fake stamp paper he was thriving in. His case was registered and was to be arrested. But he evaded arrest for a year and was held in Ajmer in 2002. The rest is history. A kingpin is no more.

Immunity Boosting Yoga Asanas To Get Rid Of Cold and Flu <<< Continued from Pg 1 >>>

S

light changes in weather and all those with moderate or low immunity end up with a sore throat and a cold. And although it seems common with no major disruptions in your life, it can be very annoying. It drains out your energy and leaves you totally exhausted. A tiny living organism, a virus, causes this illness. There are over 200 types of viruses that can cause a cold. It is the rhinovirus, though, that causes around 40% of the colds. How Does A Common Cold Start? If someone around you is infected with the virus, you can get it too, which means colds are contagious. Simple surface contact, like spoons, doorknobs, keyboards, or anything that touches your mouth or nose, can transfer the virus to another person. The cold virus is also airborne, so if you have a sick person who sneezes around you, you are bound to end up with a cold. The virus attaches itself to the lining of your nose and throat. Once your immune system gets the signal, it sends out white blood cells to attack the viruses. How Does Yoga Help To Cure A Cold? Yoga helps you beat the cold because it balances the sympathetic (response/fight) and parasympathetic (rest) systems. Also, the immune systems need white blood cells to help them fight the viruses. These white blood cells are usually circulating in the thymus, which is located in the chest. So, with the help of yoga asanas (mainly inversions), you can draw these white blood cells to the head and throat, along with a gush of fresh

It helps to send a new batch of blood to the head, thereby clearing out blockages and sinuses. It invigorates the nervous system and relieves stress and tension. The Adho Mukha Svanasana or the Downward Dog Stretch is an asana where your heart is placed higher than the head. There is a reverse pull of gravity that happens when you do that, and this aids in the proper circulation of the lymph and the blood. The mild inversion allows a free flow of white blood cells throughout the body and also helps to drain out the sinuses. Ustrasana UstrasanaThis asana also called the Camel Pose, opens up the chest and clears out all the passages. It is essential to try and breathe as much as you can while you are in this pose. This will help open up all the blocked areas that are causing the cold. The Legs Up The Wall Pose is a great pose to practice to counter respiratory ailments. When you practice this asana, you will realize that you are

relieved of the headaches or backaches that accompany a cold. Practicing this asana calms the mind and makes you strong as your body deals with the cold. This asana helps the immune cells to move through your body. Viparita Karani This pose is very helpful for those suffering from sinusitis. It improves the blood circulation in the body and also sets up a clear pathway for detox. This eliminates the pathogens and increases immunity, therefore helping you get rid of your cold. Halasana When you assume this asana, your chest is raised, and throat is opened up. This improves your breathing and helps cure a cold. This might seem like one of the most complex and complicated yoga asanas. It revitalizes your body and also helps you detox as the stagnant blood rushes from your toes and filters through your heart and moves further to drain your head. This asana

also raises your immunity and helps you fight a cold. Salamba Sirsasana This might seem like one of the most complex and complicated yoga asanas. It revitalizes your body and also helps you detox as the stagnant blood rushes from your toes and filters through your heart and moves further to drain your head. This asana also raises your immunity and helps you fight a cold. Salamba Sirsasana The Shavasana is a deep resting pose. Sometimes, when you have a cold, all you need to do is to rest your body. It energizes it and helps it fight better against the cold-causing viruses.

On November 1, Karnataka celebrates 'Kannada Rajyostava'. (Karnataka Formation Day). As people in Karnataka commemorate this day, it's worth mentioning that Karnataka is the one of the first states in India which has implemented a very comprehensive and thoughtful plastic ban. How did this comprehensive ban happen? In 2015 MoEF (Ministry of Environment, Forest) had introduced a proposal for plastic ban & sought feedback / opinions for the same. Bangalore being the flag bearer of environmental activism, activists gave suggestions on materials to be banned. It started with just one ward & subsequently spread to other wards. Finally in March 2016, a Government Order on the ban was rolled out. What is banned in Karnataka - As per Government Order 1. Plastic carry bags of all microns 2. Polypropylene bags

easily conclude that all these are totally non essential plastics. These plastics are also low value hence difficult to recycle. We can easily manage our day to day life without these. There are many alternatives available for all these. Our consumerist lifestyle of convenience is already full of packaged food prepacked in plastics. 3. Plastic produce bags, cling wraps 4. Disposable plastic cutlery, Not only food but almost all the stuff which we use on a daily basis right styrofoam plates, styrofoam cups, bowls, paper plates with plastic from milk, stationary, toiletries, bed linen, medicines - everything comes lining, disposable plastic cups, packed in plastics. thermocol. It's overwhelming once you begin to 5. Black garbage bags 6. Plastic liners used while serving understand magnitude of this problem. Yes people cannot street food 7. Plastic, aluminium-plastic eliminate all the pre-packaged plastic overnight but if people start with (#polyolefin) pouches for food eliminating all non essential low parcels value plastic, half of the battle is won. 8. As it is the case with every struggle, there are some achievements, some failures. Most supermarkets, malls have switched to paper or cloth bags. Some restaurants, event planners have switched to complete reusable cutlery. Every other day at least few events are going #zerowaste. If we compare the disposable plastic usage of other states, Karnataka is way better than most. If you are from Karnataka, please try to eliminate all the listed non essential plastics. You may say that ban is a failure, government doesn't care etc. but a major reason for failure is going to be 'YOU'. Government can bring rules & regulations but as a citizen, it's your responsibility to adhere to the rules in the interest of the environment & your own well being. If you are from any other part of the country, please start eliminating NOW. Don't wait for tomorrow / Govt. Orders / Supreme Court Orders. It might be too late then.

Birbal’s First Golden Rendezvous With Akbar

Akbar-Birbal companionship is one of the strangest things of history. As yet a young man of twenty with no career of his own, Birbal, a Brahmin scholar, left his place of birth in Madhya Pradesh for Delhi, Capital city, in search of work. He heard a herald that emperor Akbar would reward a thousand gold coins to the artist who pleased him with the portrait of the emperor, which should be the replica of what exactly he was. In fact, this contest was the brainchild of Akbar himself who wanted to select a man of wit among his citizens to give him "comic relief " to the growing political and administrative seriousness in his royal court. On the appointed day and time, there was the beeline of artists before the court; each had a covered picture of the emperor. Everyone in the court was anxious to find who would get the coveted prize of one thousand gold coins. Akbar, sitting on a high-throne, received the folded portraits, and

rejected them one by one with his cryptic comments. "No. This is not what exactly I am now." The poor Brahmin, Birbal, was waiting for his chance. He was the last to show the thing he carried on his arms. When Birbal's turn came, emperor Akbar piqued: "Are you like the rest of the incapables who have unsatisfactorily produced my portraits which don't exactly show me what I am now"? Thereby, Birbal without fear, yet in a tone of humility, barbed: "Portray, my emperor, into it and satisfy." Strangely, it was not a drawing or a painting; but a mirror opened from the folds by Birbal to show the emperor exactly what he was then. "The best replica of emperor Akbar." Eureka! The emperor got the man he wanted. With all his love and respect for his master, Birbal throughout his career in Akbar's court as a minister tried his best to show Akbar what he was. Akbar received Birbal with open arms to the applause of everyone in the open court, and rewarded him with a thousand gold coins. From that time onwards, Akbar never willingly parted from Birbal's company. The friendship of AkbarBirbal went on and on. In Akbar's court, Birbal was the spice in all-general discussions. He had the access to go to the palace whenever he liked. He was a sure companion of emperor Akbar on his walks in palace-garden. Their fruitful friendship had given rise to many anecdotes that have become permanent stock in the world treasure of ready wit and humour.

Man's Wealth is Investment in Eternity A disciple of Buddha, said, "Oh Master! I have a request to make." Buddha: "What is it; tell me?" Disciple: "My robe is worn out. It is no longer decent enough to wear. Please, may I have a new one?" Buddha looked at the disciple's attire and found that the garment was absolutely in tatters and really needed replacement. So he asked the store-keeper to give a new robe to this disciple. The disciple offered obeisance to the great master and left the room. Buddha kept thinking about the incident and felt that he had perhaps missed an opportunity to teach a valuable lesson to the disciple. So he went to the disciple's quarters to talk to him. Buddha: Are you comfortable in your new robe? Do you need anything else? Disciple: Thank you Master. I am very comfortable and do not need anything else. Buddha: Now that you have a new one, what have you done with the old one? Disciple: I have used it to replace my worn out bedspread. Buddha: What did you do with the old bedspread? Disciple: Master, I am using it as a curtain on my window. Buddha: Did you discard your old window curtain? Disciple: Master, I tore it into four pieces and am using them as napkins

to handle the hot pots and pans in the kitchen. Buddha: What about the old kitchen napkins? Disciple: We are using them as mops to wash and wipe the floor. Buddha: Where is the old mop? Disciple: Lord, the old mop was so tattered that the best we could do was to take all the threads apart and make wicks for your oil lamp. One of them is presently lit in your room." Buddha was content. He was happy that His disciples realized that nothing is useless. We can find a use for everything, if only we want to! Nothing should be wasted; not even time! If all of us were to practice the habit of thrift, we can preserve the non renewable resources for our children, our grandchildren and our great grand children as our forefathers so thoughtfully did for us. Let us vow together to leave at least one monument for our children: The Earth! The real measure of a man's wealth is what he has invested in eternity.

Causes of Burning Sensation and its Treatments Injuries, infections, and autoimmune disorders have the potential to trigger nerve pain, and in some cases cause nerve damage

A

burning sensation is a type of pain that’s distinct from dull, stabbing, or aching pain. A burning pain is often related to nerve problems. However, there are many other possible causes. Injuries, infections, and autoimmune disorders have the potential to trigger nerve pain, and in some cases cause nerve damage. Many medical conditions that cause a burning sensation have no cure, but treatments are helpful in controlling the pain. You should seek treatment from your doctor if you’re concerned about a burning sensation and suspect you have a health problem. Causes of a burning sensation One of the most common reasons for burning pain is damage or dysfunction in the nervous system. This system is made up of the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS is the primary command center, and includes the brain and spinal cord. The PNS consists of the nerves that branch out from the brain and spine, connecting the rest of the body to the CNS. Several different types of nerve and spine conditions that may cause burning pain as a symptom include. • Central pain syndrome is a brain disorder that occurs when the nerves in the CNS are damaged. The condition can cause different types of painful sensations, including burning and aching. • Cervical spondylosis is a result of aging. Wear and tear on the bones and cartilage in the neck cause compression on the nerves. This leads to chronic neck pain along with a burning sensation. • Herniated disk occurs when a disk in the spine slips out of place. The disks protect the bones in the spinal cord by absorbing shock from daily activities, such as walking and twisting. When a disk moves out of place, it can compress a nerve and cause a burning pain. It may also cause numbness or muscle weakness. • Mononeuropathy is a group of conditions that can cause damage to a single nerve. The damage often results in a tingling or burning sensation in the affected part of the body. There are several types of mononeuropathy, including carpal tunnel, ulnar nerve palsy, and sciatica. • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the CNS. Researchers believe that ms causes the body’s immune system to attack myelin, which is an insulating coating around nerve cells. Once myelin erodes, communication between nerve cells in the CNS is disrupted. When this happens, some parts of the body don’t receive instructions from the brain. This results in a variety of symptoms, including burning pain and spasms.

• Neuralgia is burning and stabbing pain that occurs along a damaged or irritated nerve. The affected nerve may be anywhere in the body, but it’s most often in the face or neck. • Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder that develops when a peripheral nerve is damaged, affecting its ability to function correctly. It may trigger a burning sensation. When at least two nerves or areas are affected, as can happen in leprosy, the condition is called mononeuritis multiplex. • Radiculopathy, also referred to as a pinched nerve in the spine, is a natural part of aging. It occurs when surrounding bones, cartilage, or muscle deteriorates over time. The condition may also be triggered by injury or trauma to the spine. Radiculopathy causes burning pain in some cases, but not all. Accidents, injuries, and traumas are other possible causes of burning sensations. • Frostbite occurs when skin and the tissue under it freeze. Before numbness sets in, frostbite produces a burning sensation. • Stings and bites from insects or animals that are venomous, such as snakes, produce a burning sensation at the affected area. • Whiplash is an injury that occurs when someone’s head moves back and forth very suddenly with great force. The injury is most common after a car accident. It can cause a burning pain and stiffness in the neck. Certain nutritional deficiencies can also include burning pain as a symptom. • Beriberi is a deficiency in thiamine, or vitamin B-1. • Hypoparathyroidism is a rare disease characterized by an underproduction of parathyroid hormone, a hormone produced by glands in the neck. This can lead to a calcium deficiency. • Megaloblastic anemia may be related to a vitamin B-12 or folic acid deficiency.

• Pernicious anemia causes a vitamin B-12 deficiency. There are other potential causes of a burning sensation in different parts of the body. • Canker sores are mouth ulcers or sores caused by a virus. They are usually very painful. • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is chronic acid reflux, which occurs when stomach contents flow back up into the esophagus. The condition can cause a burning sensation in the esophagus, chest, or stomach. • Peripheral vascular disease (PVDs) is a blood circulation disorder that affects veins and arteries outside of the heart and brain. It often causes burning pain that gets worse when walking. • Rosacea is a skin condition that produces red, pus-filled bumps on various areas of the body. The affected areas can sometimes feel hot. Diagnosing the cause of a burning sensation Schedule an appointment with your doctor if you’re experiencing a persistent burning sensation. During your appointment, your doctor will perform a physical examination and ask you about your pain. Be prepared to answer questions that may include: • the location of the pain • the severity of the pain • when the pain began • how often you experience the pain • any other symptoms you may be experiencing Your doctor will also order certain tests to try to identify the underlying cause of your burning pain. These diagnostic tests may include: • blood or urine tests to check for nutritional deficiencies and other conditions • imaging tests, such as X-rays and CT scans, to examine bones and muscles in the spine • electromyography (EMG) to assess the health of nerves and muscles • nerve conduction velocity test to determine how quickly electrical signals move through a particular peripheral nerve • nerve biopsy to check for nerve damage in a particular part of the body • skin biopsy to examine a small sample of the affected skin under a microscope for the presence of abnormal cells Treatment for a burning sensation Treatment for a burning sensation depends on the underlying cause. If your doctor finds an underlying health condition, they will attempt to treat that particular condition first. Your course of treatment will vary depending on the problem. Treatment may include:

Email: gardencityplus2013@gmail.com

• medications, • surgery • physical therapy • dietary changes • lifestyle modifications The burning pain can be controlled with anti-inflammatory medications, prescription painkillers, or over-thecounter (OCT) pain relievers. You can also ask your doctor about certain home remedies that may help treat your condition. What you can do now Many conditions that cause a burning sensation have no cure, but treatments can make a big difference in reducing the pain and any other symptoms. You should see your doctor so you can receive a diagnosis and treatment for the problem that may be causing your burning sensation. Make sure you stick with your treatment plan and attend any necessary follow-up appointments. Home Remedies: Cold water is one of the best home remedies for burning feet. The cool water provides quick relief from the tingling, numbness and swelling of the feet. Do not soak your feet in cold water for more than a few minutes as it can worsen the symptoms. Also, do not apply ice or an ice pack directly on your feet. Note: Cold water immersions are often advised against in case of erythromelalgia as it may cause reactive flaring and may further lead to maceration of the skin, non-healing ulcers and other problems.
