‘Nurture Your Green Patch’ -Wipro’s Initiative towards Ecological Growth
S
eldom does one gets to see greenery around colossal corporate offices in today’s World, where the matter that concerns most of them is ‘that piece of land’ to build a structure for convenience, luxury and the elite elevation to be visible architecturally. Very few corporate offices or companies have contributed towards a healthy eco-system which is a matter of prime concern today, if there has to be a bright future for the young ones to stay fit and healthy tomorrow. One of these companies which are indeed investing time, energy and money towards a Green Environment, is none other than Wipro at Electronics City. This is in itself a giant leap forward! As a part of Wipro’s deep commit-
ment to ecological sustainability, it has been involved with multiple environment related programs both, within the business ecosystem as well as in the civic and social sectors outside. Commonly called ‘Eco-eye’,
Wipro’s urban biodiversity program includes the twin goals of converting five of our existing campuses to biodiversity zones and ensuring that all new campuses incorporate biodiversity principles into their design. Its first flagship project in the Electronic City campus in Bangalore was initiated two years back with the first phase of a unique Butterfly Park being now completed. The next phase includes an innovatively conceived wetland biodiversity zone that will use recycled water. For its Pune campus project, the first phase has seen a the inception of its sustainability trebling of the number of species of program goes back to 2008. Free Ambulance Service for Accident Victims
A
pilot operation of providing free Outer Ring Road Ambulance Service (ORRAS) was launched on February 16, by the HSR layout Traffic Police Station in association with Rajan Group and Primus Hospitals. Mr. Rao Ganesh Janardhan, Police Inspector, HSR layout inaugurated the service. ORRAS will operate between Marathalli and Silk Board to rescue accident victims. The
service will be provided free for road accidents victims and will be chargeable for the other patients who will also be picked up on request from their respective places of residence. The Police Inspector said that “this is just a pilot study and at a later stage it will be implemented throughout HSR Layout traffic limits. The idea behind implementing this service is to reach the accident spot at the earliest, since the ambulance will be close to the junction where a policeman is available always and on receiving the message of accident through wireless he shall direct the ORRAS team. If required he will join them and move towards the spot at the earliest. This will ensure that lives will now be saved on priority and can avoid mute spectators capturing the accident and the plight of the victim on videos. The maximum time taken to reach the spot would be 20 minutes depending on the distance. CALL 7090111110 for the service.

The green patch is their space for showcasing and learning horticulture at the workplace. Living in urban spaces, people seem to be moving further away from natural environments. A large part of their lives is spent indoors staring at devices. Some of them are lucky to have found a favourite nature-spot around the place of residence and work place to help them to relax, unwind and be one with nature. Ten teams at EC 4 have a 10x10 sq ft area of land and they have a chance to grow flowers, vegetables, spices of their choice on their green patch. These green patches are built along the circumference of the Dome/Center Court which houses the campus cafeteria as a part of the EC 4 Biodiversity Park Project. The teams which comprise of more than

A Meet with RWAs Held by HSR Traffic Police
A
meeting called for by the HSR traffic police was well attended by the residents, RWAs across HSR, Iblur, Belandur and a few corporates. Uber too participated in the meeting to thrash the problems faced by them and also the residents on parking issues concerning them. The meeting was presided by the DCP and ACP (Traffic). Solutions were sought from both the sides. It now appears that a permanent solution is in the offing to suit both parties involved ( a tri-partite if corporates are to be considered a party). In general, every individual representing the civic bodies and society appreciated the good work done by Mr. Rao Ganesh Janardhan, Police Inspector, HSR (Traffic). The main issues that caused inconvenience to the public were haphazard parking of vehicles on 24th main, 17th cross and 19th main which are bearing the brunt of the issue. Some educational institutions and some private buses are involved too in this congestion along with Uber. It was put forth to the police to implement the same method that is adopted to maintain 27th main and use of towing vehicles to be continued. Alternate side parking was suggested to be introduced on 24th main and on 17th cross, the issue of Maruti showroom utilizing that extra space was discussed threadbare and the police have assured action soon. Some vehicles that are parked on 19th main belong to the owners on 24th main which is matter of concern, doubling the number of vehicles on the road resulting in lot of problems to the public and residents. The Director of Uber said that stickers will be issued and stuck on their cars for identity and towing of vehicles parked in undesignated places. Parking in corners at key junctions leading to main roads like Pizza Hut, Vision Express turning are causes for regular traffic jams, and the need to mark ‘No Parking’ at these corners were suggested. Sharing of grid locks at BESCOM and Ambedker Bhavan junctions was highlighted and the residents asked for some interventions to resolve it as it is getting more and more difficult to pass through these junctions. Issue of residential roads getting more traffic due to the changes at the Nandani Cool Joint was raised, and Traffic Police said on observation necessary changes
will be made over a period of time. Issue of the changes near the Rock view bar was also taken up, Traffic Police sought more time to study and make changes over a period of time. But, on query, the police said that on the contrary, the traffic at Nandini Cool Joint was now free-flowing. Issue of increased parking by Oxford college students that is leading to not only NPS buses getting parked in the middle of the road but also effecting the residents around was raised and requested the DCP to take strict action on parking outside the college as they have parking space unused. Issue of the high barricade opposite BDA was also raised, and the Police said that it will be looked into. Request for more sign and info boards to be put for public awareness was welcomed by the police so that rules are not violated. The DCP wanted all to raise the issue related to parking, violations and related ones via Public Eye application as it will track the complaint saving the police to visit the same spot often. He also suggested that there is a need to write to BBMP on issues related to footpaths, roads, marking, speed breakers that come directly under them so that the Traffic Police save time on doing all their errand jobs.
Sustainablity is Imperative in Today`s World 30 employees are part of Phase 1 of this program. An external resource person and an expert, Mr. Nadana Sigamani, guides the teams regularly by showing them basic understanding in terms of how to plant, nurture and maintain the saplings on their patches. Through this program they are building connects with other ecology projects on campus like, recycled water from the campus which is used for watering the patches. It has been a refreshing experience for employees as a lot of them attempted gardening for the first time. The teams tend to their patches during the lunch breaks and after hours. The gardening staff has also pitched in to make watering on the weekends easy. There are also plans to start similar projects in other Wipro campuses. The teams have made a great start and have harvested various vegetables like beans, palak, methi, radish, amaranths, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, cluster beans, cucumber and bitter gourd among others from their patches. Green Spots’ can be created at any

place - be it home, neighborhood or at office. Growing some greens in office is absolute fun and “it gives a sense of stress free atmosphere when we nurture the green patches at office after a daylong work in IT world. Green spots help us to unwind”, said Lalithamba. Wipro came up with this idea of engaging interested employees to grow and nurture their own patch. Employees formed their own teams. In the beginning employees sowed what they liked and were not much interesting to continue due to the waiting period of germination and
growth before the yield. But once the greens started giving yield, the enthusiasm of teams increased. Everyone wanted to experiment with different kinds of produce. Now they have sown beans, palak, methi, radish, amaranths, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, cluster beans, cucumber, bitter gourd, drum sticks and list continues. The eagerness to experiment more says a lot, of the employees, with each team asking for more plots. Their biggest support comes from FMG and the gardening staff who help with digging and watering over
weekends on request. They are the energy source. Mr. Sigamani and his team are a great help to the teams - be it clarifying doubts, helping to procure seeds, organizing meetings near plots and giving feedback and many more such contributions. What have the Wiproites to say on this Initiative? “Hope every corporate encourages their employees to grow and nurture some green patch and this is sustainability and giving back to nature.” Lalithamba Vishwanathaiah “Gardening is cheaper than therapy, plus you get to keep the produce” – Nadana Sigamani “Pledge to make our Environment clean and reduce waste” – Uttam Shukla “It is heartening to see the enthusiasm and dedication amongst all team members. From sowing to harvesting, these teams are committed to the upkeep of their plots. Excited to see this initiative spread across and outside Wipro”-Arathi Hanumanthappa Inputs from Lailthamba

Use HDPE or HDP Labeled Water Bottles for Healthy use
W
hen buying bottled water, we usually don’t put too much attention on the bottle. But, according to experts, we can protect our health by checking the bottom of the bottle before we choose a bottled water. First, the content of every bottle must be labeled by every brand. So, remember that the plastic
bottles which are labeled with PP, HDPE, HDP, and several others, are safe as they don not release toxic substances in the water. The remaining letters can signify the chemicals included in the bottled water. In this post, we explain how to distinguish toxic from a healthy bottled water. Check the Following Things When Buying Bottled Water PETE or PET Bottles labeled PETE or PET can release chemicals and heavy metals that can disrupt the hormonal balance.
HDPE or HDP If you see these letters on a bottle, it means that the water is safe to drink. In fact, this water is regarded to be the healthiest water because these types of bottles don’t release any type of chemicals or harmful substances. PVC or 3V Bottles labeled with these letters mean they release two toxic substances that can disrupt the hormone balance in your body. LDPE Although this kind of plastic doesn’t release dangerous chemicals, still it shouldn’t be used in the plastic bottle production. It is included in the content of plastic bags. PP This is another semi-transparent or white colored plastic used in the production of yogurt cups and syrup packings. PS These letters are usually found on fast food casings and coffee cups. They indicate that the plastic releases carcinogen substances. Non-Labelled Plastic or PC This plastic is believed to be the most dangerous one used in food products, as it releases BPA chemicals. It is usually included in the content of food containers and sports water bottles. Therefore, make sure you look at the bottom of every bottle of water before you decide to buy it!

Cabs may stay off City Roads for some more Days
C
ab users in the city are having a hard time as the indefinite strike called by drivers of cab aggregators, Uber and Ola, entered the fourth day on
Saturday. With the protesting drivers refusing to budge from their stand, the strike is likely to continue for another few days. Tanveer Pasha, a member of Ola and Uber’s drivers union, claimed that more than 90 per cent of the cabs
remained off the road. “We have decided to continue the strike as nobody has come forward to resolve the issues. Both government and app-based cab
aggregators are turning a blind eye to our problems,” he added. The drivers have been protesting against reduced incentives, long working hours and imposition of fines. However, the state government and app-based aggregators are unlikely to interfere in the issue as they have decided to wait and watch till the strike loses steam. Transport Minister R Ramalinga Reddy told, “The strike is an internal issue of a section of drivers and two app-based cab aggregators. The government doesn’t have any role in this, yet the transport department held discussions with the cab aggregators and drivers on five occasions but there has been no progress.” He said many cab operators, including Meru, Mega and Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), are plying in the city. Asked about several instances of plying cabs being stopped by protesters, Reddy said: “The government will take strict action based on complaints.”
Move to Seize Vehicles used for Wheelies gets Thumbs up
C
ity Police Commissioner Praveen Sood on Friday tweeted “Vehicles used for wheeling will be seized and allowed to rot permanently.” The move was instantly welcomed by many. “In fact situation of bikers mess is too grim in (Frazer) town. Their driving leads to many accidents and unsafe roads” tweeted Piyush Agrawal. Some suggested that the seized vehicles be used for other purposes. “Convert and use them for policing & mobile ambulance services. They do this in the UK” tweeted Gowrang Chindi. “Please don’t waste, auction it or give it as a prize to good Samaritan,” wrote Chetan Naik. However, a few others complained that the seized vehicles will only pile up near police stations creating an inconvenience for commuters because of shrinking road space. Sharmili Pal tweeted, “Allowed to rot in designated spaces right? @Rtnagartr has rotting vehicles in front of the station causing
traffic jams (and) an eyesore” Pramod Ramchar tweeted, “Already most of the police stations are surrounded by rotten vehicles and (have become) landmarks”. Vijaya Shankar, another user, said, “Why can’t they be sold in auction immediately? Poor people can buy them. 1000s are impounded and rotting all around Bangalore”. Many Twitter users also shared details of other stretches in the city where wheelies are frequently performed. According to the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, whoever drives a motor vehicle at a speed or in a manner dangerous to the public will face imprisonment for up to six months or a fine up to `1,000. Road safety experts say that wheelies or motorcycle racing on busy roads is a dangerous trend, which results in deaths of over a dozen youngsters every year. Many bikers are often seen performing other stunts like zigzagging, juggling, and lying flat on the seat of a moving bike.

Improve your Study Technique to be Prepared for Exams
E
veryone hates taking exams, but you can improve your study technique for them to avoid being caught unpre-
pared. Review your syllabus. Figure out when all of your exams will be and how much of your grade they are worth. Put these dates on your calendar or planner so they don't sneak up on you! Plan review sessions beginning at least a week in advance of each exam. Ideally, you'll do several mini-reviews well in advance, gradually increasing the time in which you study, rather than trying to cram everything into one mega session the night before the test. Pay attention in class. This seems like a no-brainer, but actually paying attention while you're in class will help you immensely once exam time comes. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you'll just "absorb" knowledge; be an active learner. • Listen carefully, because teachers often give hints like "The most important thing about this topic is...". Or they may just place emphasis on certain words and issues. This is the real key to testing well. The more you absorb the information early on, the less studying you'll need to do. Take good notes. This is easier said than done, but learning how to take good notes will help you immensely once it comes time to study. Write down everything your teacher writes on the board or puts up in slides. Try to record as much of what the teacher says as possible, but don't allow taking notes to distract you so much that you forget to listen. • Review your notes daily, right after class. This will help reinforce the information you just learned. Make studying a part of your habits. Too often, it's easy to view studying as something that only gets done at the last minute in a huge overnight cram session. Instead, try setting aside some time every day to study. Scheduling it just like another appointment or class may help you stay motivated to continue the habit. • Ask about the exam format. Ask your teacher what format the test will be in, how it will be graded, if there are any opportunities for extra credit, and if they would be willing to talk to you about highlighting in your notes, what the most important broad subjects will be, etc. Creating an Optimal Environment for Learning Study in a clean, quiet and orderly room. Keep anything and everything away from where you are that may
cause you to get distracted. Jumping up to read a text message on your phone or periodically checking social media is ill-advised whilst studying. Turn on the light! Studying in a dark room is not recommended. Add lamps at night, or in the daytime, open the window coverings (open the window a little, too). People tend to study and focus better in a brighter, oxygenated room with little noise. Turn the TV off. While many students believe that they're good at multitasking, such as studying with the TV on or while chatting online with friends, research suggests that this is not true for the vast majority of people. For better studying performance, eliminate distractions such as TV and loud music with lyrics. Rapidly swapping attention between studying and watching TV makes it more difficult for your brain to prioritize information acquisition. Organizing Your Learning Focus on your work objectives. What do you intend to accomplish during this session? Setting a concrete study goal may help you. Creating study plans is also a good idea. If 3 out of 5 lessons are easy and can be finished fast, finish them first, so you can spend quality time on the difficult lessons without fretting. Also, keeping a folder for your exam reviews is a good way to keep organized. Write yourself a study guide. Go through your notes and rewrite the most important information. Not only will this give you a more focused way to study, but it creating it is another form of studying! Just don't spend too much time on the guide itself: you need to have time to go over it too! Reinvent your notes in other formats. Rewriting your notes is great if you're a kinesthetic learner. Mind mapping is the most effective way of doing this. Also, when you re-write something, you will probably think about what you are writing, what it's about, and why you wrote it down. Most importantly, it refreshes your memory. If you took notes a month ago and just found out that those notes will be relevant in your exam, rewriting them will remind you of them when you need it for your exam. • Don't simply copy your notes over and over again. This tends to lean towards memorizing the exact wording of your notes instead of the actual concepts. Instead, read and think about the contents of your notes (such as think of examples), and then re-word them. Ask yourself questions about your
Website: www.gardencityplus.com
material. This can help you tell if you have remembered what you just studied. Don't try to remember the exact wording from your notes in your answer to yourself; synthesizing that information into an answer is a much more useful tactic. • It can also help to say the answers to your questions out loud, as if you were trying to explain it to someone else. Review previous tests and assignments. If you missed questions on previous work, look up the answers and understand why you missed these questions. This is particularly helpful if the exam you're studying for is cumulative or comprehensive, meaning it covers things you also covered earlier in the course. Studying Efficiently Find the right hours. Don't study when you're really tired. It's better to get a good night's sleep after studying for a short time than to push on at two in the morning. You won't remember much and you're likely to see a performance drop the next day. Start as early as possible. Don't cram. Cramming the night before is proven to be ineffective, because you're taking in so much information at once that it's impossible to memorize it at all — in fact, you'll hardly retain anything. Studying before and going over it multiple times really is the best way to learn the material. This is especially true with things like history and theoretical subjects. • Always study when you have the chance, even if it is only for 15 or 20 minutes. These short study periods add up fast! • Study in chunks of 25 minutes using the Pomodoro Technique. After that make a break of 5 minutes; repeat the process 3x, then make a longer pause of 30-45 minutes. Study for your learning style. If you're a visual learner, using pictures can help. Auditory learners should record themselves saying notes and recite it afterwards. If you are a physical person, lecture to yourself (out loud) while also using your hands or moving around; this way it will be easier for you to memorize. Adjust your study techniques to fit your subject. Subjects such as mathematics require a lot of practice with problem sets in order to become familiar with the processes required. Subjects in the humanities, such as history or literature, may require more information synthesis and memorization of things such as terms or dates. • Whatever you do, don't just re-read the same set of notes over and over again. In order to actually learn,
you need to take an active role in knowledge creation as well as information review. Try finding the "big picture" among what you've taken down or reorganizing your notes by theme or date. Think of your teacher. Ask yourself: What is my teacher most likely to ask on the exam? What materials should I focus on to give myself the best chance of knowing what I need to know? What trick questions or wrinkles could my teacher introduce that might throw me for a loop? This may help you focus on the most important information, rather than getting stuck on things that might not matter as much. Ask for help. If you need help, ask someone who is good at these subjects. Friends, family, tutors, and teachers are all good options. If you don't understand what the person helping you is communicating, don't be afraid to ask them to elaborate. • Asking teachers for help conveys your commitment to the material and can be helpful in the future as well as with your exams. Always remember to ask your teacher if you do not know what she is talking about or if you need more information. The teacher will probably be glad to help. • There are often resources at schools and colleges that can help you cope with stress, answer study-related questions, give you study tips and other forms of guidance. Ask your teacher or visit your school's website to learn how to use these resources. Take breaks. You need some time to have fun and it is better to study when you are feeling relaxed than to exhaust yourself studying all day! Carefully structure your break and study time. Usually, 20-30 minutes of study and then a 5 minute break is the most effective method. • If you have trouble bringing yourself to study, instead of long uninterrupted sessions, chunk your work into 20 minute periods, taking a 10-minute break at the end of every period. • Make sure that you structure the chunks logically so that you're not breaking up concepts across chunks, as this may make it more difficult to remember concepts in their entirety. Think positive but work hard. Self confidence is important; focusing on how little you've studied or how badly you think you will do on the exam just distracts you from working on achieving success. However, this doesn't mean that you shouldn't study hard. You still need to work at it, even if you have confidence in yourself. Confidence just keeps away roadblocks to
success. Work with others. Arrange study dates at a library with your friends to compare notes or explain things the other one might not understand. Working with other people can help you cover gaps in your own knowledge and also help you remember more information, since you may have to explain things to them or have conversations about the topic. • If you ask for help from others, don't joke around. Concentrate on what you are doing. Call for help. If you're stuck on a subject, do not be afraid to call a friend and ask for help. If your friends cannot help, ask a tutor for help. • If you have time before your exam and find that you're not understanding material, ask if your teacher will go over it with you. Get plenty of rest the night before. Children in elementary school (in the UK, primary school) require on average 10-11 hours of sleep for optimal performance. Adolescents, on the other hand, typically require at least 10+ hours. Poor sleep has been found to accumulate (referred to as "sleep debt"); in order to make up for prolonged poor sleep habits, several weeks of daily optimal sleep may be required to return to optimal performance. • Don't consume caffeine or any other stimulating substance within 5-6 hours prior to sleeping. (However, if a doctor prescribed you a stimulant to take at a specific time, take it at that time regardless of when you fall asleep, and ask your doctor before changing anything.) Such substances reduce the efficiency of sleep, meaning that even with sufficient sleep time, you may not feel well rested upon waking. Eat a healthy, light meal. Eat a balanced breakfast full of lean protein, vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants. A sample breakfast might include a spinach omelet with smoked salmon, whole wheat toast, and a banana. Get to the exam room with time to spare. Give yourself at least five or 10 minutes to gather your thoughts before starting the exam. This way, you can get settled in and have time to relax before the test starts. Do the questions you know first. If you don't know the answer to the question, do the next one and come back to it at the end. Struggling and concentrating on a question you don't know the answer to can be time consuming, which makes you lose valuable marks.
