Central Prison Irregularities, an Embarrassment to the CM? - T Ramesh

he Chief Minister Mr. Siddaramaiah, who also holds the Home portfolio, is virtually in a spot of bother since he has been chased by problems and entanglements. More so, so far as the police department is concerned, it seems. Last week, it was the turn of the high officials in the police department who were in the midst of a duel which fired missiles directly on the government to take immediate measures to check the intensity of the episode to blow out of proportions. The Director General of Police (prisons) Mr. HN Sathyanarayana Rao,who is due to retire this month was made to go on leave and was replaced since then. Deputy Inspector General, Ms. D Roopa was transferred as Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety. The Jail Superintendent Mr. UD Krishnakumar too was shifted. The CM said that the transfers were made to ensure a fair investigation in

to the entire chaos that prevailed due to the submission of two reports from Roopa to her superior Sathyanarayana Rao on the irregularities that were prevailing in the Parappana Agrahara Jail especially concerning Tamil Nadu’s AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala and the Stamp Paper Scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi. They were given special status and VIP treatment in the jail according to the reports on receipt of Rs. 2

crore by Jail officials as bribe including HN Sathyanarayana Rao. This was the reason for the spurt in the Prison department and what followed in the jail premises itself was a total chaos in the aftermath of the inmates calling foul against each other. Two groups supporting Roopa and Rao respectively clashed and all hell broke loose. It was an effort for the authorities to maintain calm and send the inmates to their barracks.

This happened after the two officers concerned visited the jail premises. But what has caused reason for flutter that left all awe struck was the fact that around 32 prisoners were shifted out of the Jail the very next day of the clash between the groups. This has raised doubts to speculate that the truth which will emerge soon was being made to be hidden or erased so to say – destruction of evidence? The case has taken a drastic turn since 3 convicts are alleged to be behind the whistle blowing episode and one among them is the real chief who is the ‘know all’ person of the underhand dealings as is suspected. One inmate, Anantha Murthy, was beaten black and blue even in his private parts, was physically limping unable to even find his ground to keep his feet together when he was shifted to Hindalga Jail. He was seen

ompared to Indiranagar and Koramangla, HSR Layout is a reasonably new layout and hence the tree cover is very sparse. With this in mind, the active citizens of the layout, the volunteers of HSR Citizen Forum came together to brainstorm on ideas to increase the tree cover. “When we took a walk to identify locations to plant tree saplings, we saw most homes and commercial outlets had the area in front of them neatly concretized. Planting there would involve drilling

dentist turned environment activist and member of Solid Waste Management Round Table. The forest department agreed to sponsor 600 trees, electric drill and labour to plant the trees provided volunteers from the Forum identified locations. BBMP agreed to provide electricity and the corporator provided the moral backing to deal with the owners’ objections. Work began in July first week. Amidst challenges of coordinating between the different government bodies and resident volunteers, the

through the concrete, cutting it and making space for soil, compost, sapling and tree guard,” says Krupa, a resident of sector 2, who has been leading the cause for plantation since environment day last year (2016). Paying for electric/hydraulic drill/cutters, arranging for electric supply, resistance from owners and lack of man-power – posed as big roadblocks to this mission. “Mr. Satish Reddy,MLA is a big supporter of all such initiatives since the plastic ban movement. Hence, when we approached him, he connected us to the forest department”, says Dr Shanthi Tummala, a

team has identified around 600 places where trees can be planted. Around 300 saplings have been planted. “In some places we dug pits and were waiting for tree guards. There is no point in planting saplings without tree guards. A passing cow or goat will chew it off.” Says Padmashree Mahesh,

member of sector 7 RWA, adding “but once things were in place, we planted up to 50 saplings in a day. Volunteers spent long hours in the sun with the pourakarmikas as the digging was happening, I was surprised to see such support from residents” . There were a few arguments, with residents objecting to the planting. Some residents thought the tree would grow up and block the ‘beauty’ of their house. A few commercial places objected because it ate into their parking space. Between the corporator Gurumurthy Reddy, BBMP AEE Venkatesh and resident activists, the arguments were resolved. Chitra, a resident volunteer of Sector 1, who accompanied the drilling team on several occasions said, “We ensured the planting was between two compound walls so that it didn’t obstruct any gate. Only if the owner consented, we planted in between also. Many residents thanked us for the initiative as they wanted to plant trees in front of their house, but couldn't arrange for the infrastructure.” Mr. Ratnakar, a retired banker and resident of sector 7, confirmed that “each owner/establishment has promised to water the sapling for a year. After that the tree will be able to

take care of itself.” Initially, Mr. Mahesh, RFO, arranged for STP water to water most saplings. The volunteers rejoiced when it started raining. “It was a signal from God that He will water the planted saplings”, said an elated Divya Venkatesh, who runs a playschool and volunteers in co-ordinating with BBMP. Most of the saplings provided are low-maintenance trees like Honge, Neem, Gulmohar, Jackfruit etc. With 300 saplings planted, and 300 more planned in this week, HSR Layout is all set to transform from concrete jungle to a real one, thanks to these eco-lovers!

ncidents of crime against women have been on a rise in India for last few years. More and more women are joining the urban workforce and safety of women continues to be a critical area of concern, in spite of many laws laid down by the Government. In key economic hubs like Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune, there has been a steady increase in the number of cases of harassment and molestation being reported. However, the conviction rates are poor because of the poor judicial system, lack of awareness, faulty methods of collecting forensic evidence and limited use of modern technology. Most cases of sexual harassment at home, work or public places are often not reported due to cultural inhibitions in many parts of the country; where the stigma is attached to the victim rather than the perpetrator of the crime, who often gets away.

Kaagaz Foundation has been propagating the concepts of women's safety which increases awareness to deal any unsafe situations. It also teaches women how to protect themselves against a physical attack using commonsense and basic self-defense techniques. ‘Nanna Olage Indira’, a women safety handbook is a step towards making the environment safe for women, to empower them so that they can continue to contribute towards India's progress. On the birth centenary year of the 1st Woman Prime Minster of India, Indira Gandhi, who has been a role model for many generations of women, Nanna Olage Indira aims to invoke the power of Ms. Indira Gandhi in every woman to stand up for herself in the face of adversities. - Kavitha Reddy

hy is the focus on Diabetes? One in three or 33 per cent of Indians over 30 years of age are suffering from one or more lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, blood pressure, thyroid and cancer. India is home to the second largest number of adults living with diabetes worldwide, after China. There are an estimated 69 million people diagnosed with Diabetes in India. There are another 36 million adults with undiagnosed diabetes. Globally, every 6 seconds, a person dies from Diabetes. Diabetes is often ignored as it doesn’t cause any pain and significant discomfort. But once it causes damage, most of the time, the changes are irreversible. High blood sugars can cause a myriad of problems which can be life threatening as well. It can damage the kidneys permanently, requiring dialysis. It can lead to blindness by damaging the retina. Foot infections can lead to amputations. Strokes and heart attacks are also common. All of these can be prevented to some extent by having a

good control of diabetes. Role of Yoga in Diabetes management: Yoga applies the knowledge of the Pancha-Kosa model and the concept of adhi – Vyadhi to understand the root cause of diabetes and treat the same. A lot of research studies have established the efficacy of Yoga

intervention in the treatment, management and prevention of Diabetes. It is now established that Yoga practice can be used to control this disease. Yoga in general, helps in stress reduction and improves mobility. Ameya Healthcare is organizing

f you are someone who likes to cook, or even if you have watched someone cook, then obviously, you would know that oil is one of the most important ingredients required to prepare a number of dishes! In fact, in most parts of the world, oil is used while cooking dishes that are consumed on a daily basis, and not just for special dishes. Without oil, it could be hard for the dishes that we prepare to attain a certain consistency or flavour. For example, a dosa made with no oil can be soft and soggy, whereas it can be crisp and yummy, when oil is added! Different quantities of oil and even different types of oils are used to prepare various kinds of dishes, depending on the texture, flavour and other things. Now, you may be aware that staple foods are different for every country and even city, right? For example, meat and bread are the staples in most western countries, whereas rice is a staple in most of the South-Asian countries. Similarly, even when it comes to cooking oil, different countries may use different kinds of oil, especially for

Introduction Today we begin a column for skill based learning- Tips for improving professional communication skills. Communication is not just expertise in a language; however, improved language efficiency can lead to better communication. This column deals with some basic tips for improving business writing, telephone and teleconferencing skills as well as differences in the use of words in various cultures. Topic 1 –Email writing (383 words) Tip 1- write short, complete sentences In today’s world we are all used to sending messages both through mobiles and more importantly on WhatsApp. This has led to the development of short crisp phrases which, though suitable for messaging is not suitable while writing emails. The basic courtesy you can extend to the reader of your email is intelligibil-

A Person is Judged purely on Writing ity. The first rule for this is writing complete sentences especially in your first mail to someone. When you send an email to a person, you are judged purely on your writing; since the tone of voice, body language etc. is absent. In such cases, it is imperative that you write complete, clear sentences. Clear and complete sentences leaves the reader with a pleasant feeling which will make him do what you want him to do. Abrupt, short phrases are not only grammatically incorrect, but also may leave the impression of an unclear mind. Secondly, a sentence shouldn’t be over ten to fifteen words .In English the basic unit of language is a sentence. You need to read the complete sentence to understand the meaning. Long, complicated sentences take longer to understand. It may leave the reader irritated. Make the reader understand what has to be communicated in simple words. Else, the very purpose of the writing gets defeated. If the reader is not in a position to understand what has been written, then there is no point in the particular communication. Example 1: The event brought academicians from different parts of the country and the professionals from the IT industry together to deliberate

to Roopa. In fact the transfers have been criticized by the netizens and more support is pouring for Roopa. With all this hulla bulloo, will Sidda-

over the need and relevance of teaching professional communication skills in improving the employability of graduates. This sentence is very long. It can be made into two different sentences for easy understanding. The event brought together academicians from different parts of the country and the professionals from the IT industry. The objective was to deliberate over the need and relevance of teaching professional communication skills to improve employability of graduates. Example 2: Can’t make it. – This sounds fine in a WhatsApp message; however, in an email is it better to write, I am sorry; I will not be able to make it for today’s meeting. (A complete sentence which doesn’t sound rude) Incidentally, the word ‘sorry’ has multiple meanings depending on the context. Sorry or I am sorry may be an apology; “I am sorry I cannot make it” is a polite but firm refusal. Sorry? It also means I can’t hear/understand you; can you repeat that? We will share more such tips in the coming weeks. Next topic – Salutation and Signature in emails

A In fact reports have emerged that an inmate had a year back complained about the irregularities in the Jail writing to the Chief Justice of High Court to initiate action against those responsible and the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority had on June 2016 directed the then DGP (Prisons)to give a report but to no avail. The report was never filed. This has perhaps prompted Roopa to take action by writing to her own boss Sathyanarayana Rao, who she has alleged as one of the beneficiaries of the bribe received. This was sheer courage which has drawn appreciation from none other than Her Excellency Kiran Bedi governor of Puducherry. This has come as a fillip

ramaiah be able to tackle this issue coming out with a clean chit? He has already started the hunt to appoint a Home Minister with two Lingayat leaders, Ramalinga Reddy, who has agreed to take it as an additional portfolio to his already existing Transport and is also contemplating to have of the two others in his mind. Who will ultimately take and be blamed for non performance? Only time will tell. But one thing is certainly clear, something is haunting our CM who has stated to roll out welfare measures to make an impression for the next year election. How is he going to come out of it? The opposition is already catching him by the scruff of the neck.

While groundnut oil, mustard oil and coconut oil are popular in India, olive oil and flaxseed oil are much popular in the western countries. Now, we know that developing countries like India are very much influenced by the western concepts and so many of us today, feel that using olive oil may be healthy for cooking, just because it is widely used in the other countries. However, the fact is that, while olive oil has certain health benefits, mustard oil which has been used in India for cooking since ages, is known to be healthier, according to WHO. Fact #1: Omega 3 fatty acids According to World Health Organisation (WHO), mustard oil has an ideal ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, that is absent in olive oil. Fact #2: Boosts Brain Function Since mustard oil contains a high level of healthy fats, it can keep your brain functions healthy and boost memory and cognition. Fact #3: Prevent High Cholesterol The nutrients in mustard oil are also known to prevent high cholesterol, unlike many cooking oils, thus keeping you healthy. Fact #4: Heart-friendly Mustard oil is heart-friendly, as it contains just healthy fats and so it can be used safely on a regular basis.

The Wicked Barber’s Plight – Akbar & Birbal As we all know, Birbal was not only Emperor Akbar’s favorite minister but also a minister dearly loved by most of the commoners, because of his ready wit and wisdom. People used to come to him from far and wide for advise on personal matters too. However, there was a group of ministers that were jealous of his growing popularity and disliked him intensely. They outwardly showered him with praise and compliments, but on the inside they began to hatch a plot to kill him. One day they approached the king’s barber with a plan. As the barber was extremely close to the king, they asked him to help them get rid of Birbal permanently. And of course, they promised him a huge sum of money in return. The wicked barber readily agreed. The next time the king required his services, the barber started a conversation about the emperor’s father who he also used to serve. He sang praises of his fine, silky-smooth hair. And then as an afterthought he asked the king that as he was enjoying such great prosperity, had he made an attempt to do anything for the welfare of his ancestors? The king was furious at such impertinent stupidity and told the barber that it was not possible to do anything because they were already dead. The barber mentioned that he knew of a magician who could come of help. The magician could send a person up to heaven to enquire about his father’s welfare. But of course this person would have to be chosen carefully; he would have to be intelligent enough to follow the magicians instructions as well as make on-the-spot decisions. He must be wise, intelligent and responsible. The barber then suggested the best person for the job – the wisest of all ministers, Birbal. The king was very excited about hearing from his dead father and asked the barber to go ahead and make the arrangements immediately. He asked him what was needed to be done. The barber explained that they would take Birbal in a procession to the burial grounds and light a pyre. The magician would then chant some ‘mantras’ as Birbal would ascend to the heavens through the smoke. The chanting would help protect Birbal from the fire. The king happily informed Birbal of this plan. Birbal said that he thought it a brilliant idea and wanted to know the brain behind it. When learning that it was the barber’s idea, he agreed to go to heaven on condition that he be given a large some of money for the long journey as well as one month’s time to settle his family so that they had no trouble while he was gone. The king agreed to both conditions. In the duration of this month, he got a few trustworthy men to build a tunnel from the funeral grounds to his house. And on the day of the ascension, after the pyre had been lit, Birbal escaped through the concealed door of the tunnel. He disappeared in to his house where he hid for a few months while his hair and beard grew long and unruly. In the meantime his enemies were rejoicing as they thought that they had seen the last of Birbal. Then one day after many, many months Birbal arrived at the palace with news of the king’s father. The king was extremely pleased to see him and ready with a barrage of questions. Birbal told the king that his father was in the best of spirits and had been provided with all the comforts except one. The king wanted to know what was lacking because now he thought he had found a way to send things and people to heaven. Birbal answered that there were no barbers in heaven, which is why even he was forced to grow his own beard. He said that his father had asked for a good barber. So the king decided to send his own barber to serve his father in heaven. He called both the barber and the magician to prepare to send him to heaven. The barber could say absolutely nothing in his own defense as he was caught in his own trap. And once the pyre was lit he died on the spot. Nobody dared to conspire against Birbal again.

Act of Kindness and Goodwill

r. Phillips was just getting ready to leave his office and he remembered that his wife had asked him to bring 1KG of Bananas. When He stepped out, he saw an ill-looking old lady across the road. She was selling fresh bananas on the street. Mr. Phillips usually buys bananas from a grocery shop few blocks away from his office but since he was in hurry to reach home today, he thought about buying them from across the road only. He went to the old lady and asked her the price. She quoted $7 per 1KG. He told, “But the store where I usually buy from gives them for $5 per 1KG, can you not give me for the same price?” The Old Lady told, “No Sir, I can not afford to match that price. I can sell them to you at $6 per 1KG. That’s best I can afford to give you for.” Mr. Phillips told her, “nevermind”. He left in his car towards the usual grocery shop.

He went inside and picked up a good bunch of bananas. He went to the cashier to pay for them but he was surprised when the cashier told him that price per 1KG is $10. He told the cashier, “I have been buying bananas from here only for some years and this is a steep price increase, can’t you offer me a better deal for being a loyal customer?” The Manager overheard him and came there. He told Mr. Phillips, “Sorry Sir but our prices are fixed, we do not bargain.” Mr. Phillips felt little bad with that flat attitude. He thought for a second and put those bananas back. He went back to the old lady. She recognized him instantly and told him, “Sir, I can’t match that price, I won’t be able to earn any profit.”

Plastic Bottles Reused to Grow Plants

Mr. Phillips told her, “Don’t worry about the price, I will pay you $10 Per KG! Now, give me 2KG.” The Old Lady got very happy, she packed 2KGs of Bananas and said, “I can’t take $10 but I will take $7 per KG. I appreciate your kindness.” She also told him, “My Husband used to own a small fruit shop but he got very sick. We have no child or any relatives who could support us. We had to sell his shop to cover his medical bills but he could not survive.” Tears were flowing from her eyes. She said, “But now to support myself I am trying to sell what I can afford to buy and sell, so I can survive for what’s left of my life.”

Why people are unhappy inspite of having every thing

M

y grandfather rejoiced having a cycle, my father rejoiced having a scooter, and I rejoiced getting a car. I don’t know what my child will be excited about because for today’s children nothing really is exciting. They are not fascinated by the butterfly in the garden or the rainbow in the sky after the rain. They see all that in their mobile or laptop. They live in partially virtual world. “Water water everywhere, but no water to drink” this is the condition of a person when he is in the middle of the sea. That is the same situation to most of us. Today we are living in times of plenty. We have moved as a society of scarcity to affluence over a period of two decades even though some may argue there is poverty. I work with urban underprivileged and observe that they have money power to buy their meals but they don’t eat nutritious meal. Instead they eat junk foods and give it to their children also who in turn get spoiled. If two square nutritious meal is what was expected in the past, today it is completely different. Inspite of having everything people are unhappy and easily upset. Why is this so? There is a mismatch between one’s expectations and achievements. We want anything and everything. We are not satisfied with what we have. We are not content

with what we have. We want more and more. For some it may be material things , for some it is experiences. We put ourselves into very high levels of stress. We keep feeding our ego and have developed it big .We live our life only in the psychological dimension and fail to realise that life process is bigger than this. Another thing that has become common is worrying about the unknown. 24 hours TV channels, Whatsapp, Face book, are always keeping us at some level of anxiety. They highlight only the negative aspects of life. The TV serials are major culprits as they are engaging the women and senior people at home on a regular basis. Women and senior citizens are becoming overtly aggressive because of this. The social media add fuel to the fire .The rumour mongering results in lynching and killings. So unknowingly today, people are always in state of anxiety. This leads to gloomy mood. Even a smallest provocation is enough for their emotions to go hay wire. In the scale of personal comfort, a common man of today is many times better than the kings and queens of yesteryear but in the scale of contentment he is way behind. This is the root cause for all the unhappiness in the society. What is the solution for this? How do we manage life and what we

have to teach our children? First of all, we have to realise that as humans we are mortals. In the process of respiration where in we are inhaling and exhaling, if we forget to inhale after an exhalation we fall dead. That’s all life is all about - isn’t it? Then why we have to play these psychological games and get into trouble. We have to understand that due to continuous inputs made complex by technology explosion our minds are in half digested state. We have to understand that we have to be content and learn to appreciate things around us. This is where YOGA and Meditation plays an important role. Yoga means Union and this brings the scattered mind into oneness as the scattered light passing through a prism becomes

single beam of light. This will help an individual to develop calmness in the mind. Now our minds are like seashore where there is continuous wave of thoughts. Meditation will help us to reduce the thought waves. So the energy that had been trapped by the thoughts and emotions will be free and that energy will be available .That is why if you see those who practice yoga and meditation regularly appear calm and high in spirit and are very energetic. Every moment remind yourself that you are a mortal and do things to the best of your ability without worries. Learn to Count your blessings in life. Once you develop this mind set ,you will automatically become happy. -Ln Dr(Wgcdr) A Nagasubramaniam
