Awareness Programme on ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’ Held

n July 4, Friday, the day of Varamahalakshmi Festival, the BJP Mahila Morcha wing organized a programme in Singasandra, next to the Government Hospital to bring awareness on saving girl children and educating them instead of rejecting them as liabilities. The well attended programme was organized to ring bells on educating people on the merits of having girls, who are always an advantage to any family and in any kind or form. The programme, ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’ caught the attention of many women who were highly in praise of the event. Women are the main contributors in life. She takes all the pain, lives with it and silently gets over it for the sake of others. She derives pleasure in these times of pain. Can a male bear all the pain even with all the 6-packs and 8-packs? The answer could in all possibility be a BIG ‘NO’. The female sacrifices her everything for the family

invariably. It is not that the male does not sacrifice. But, it is in the context of the biological changes she undergoes that changes the very shape of her body and personality, both internal and exterior that is drawn here. The pain and suffering in carrying, delivering and raising the baby is all on the hands of a female. This is besides her daily chores at home. So, let us consider this as a universally accepted fact that the female contrib-

Education is another aspect where the girl child has time and again proved to be better than a male child in almost all wings of academics. The programme was presided by Ms. Shruthi, Cine Actress, Ms. Bharathi Shetty, State BJP Mahila Morcha President, Ms. Vijayalakshmi, District Mahila Morcha President,

Ms. Shantha Babu, Corporator, Singasandra Ward, Ms. Rajeshwari, Zilla Parishad Trustee Member and Ms. Rani Srinivas Reddy, Vice President Mahila Morcha among others. Ms. Shruthi focused on saving a girl child detailing about the advantages of having a girl child over having a male. Not that a male child is a disadvantage; but the comparison should be drawn on all fronts rather than sticking to one basic. She emphatically recommended saving a girl child for numerous reasons. Ms. Bharathi Shetty spoke about education for the girl child which in many places are ignored and hence resulting in her being an illiterate. “When a girl child is educated, she will invariably come out in flying colours if she is provided with the needs”, she said. She justified the need of education to a girl child. Ms. Vijayalakshmi said that more

SR layout sector 3, boasts of a tree park which is so environment friendly, well planned and maintained. The occupancy is also encouraging by the fact that it is well used by the residents for their morning and evening walks and children enjoying their bit too. Since quite some time three loud speakers were used to play some devotional and classical music one hour each in the morning and evening in the park. Now, a section of residents have raised objections since it is creating noise pollution. The ‘Jarring’ and ‘loud blaring’ folk songs flout noise norms as termed by this section of residents. It is alleged that due to the building of canopies, the loud speakers were not in use for some time, but now it has resurfaced after the work. Garden City Plus spoke to a few residents and others concerned on this issue. If the music played in the park is too loud as to disturb the residents’ peace, then it is indeed a matter to be taken up and dealt with. But, it seems to be a case here, as there is another section of residents which feels that the music played is in fact a melody and a mind freshener too. Legally, conical speakers are banned by the Court of Law, and more so, in a park. GCP spoke to Mr. Ugrappa, MLC, to know his stand in this and throw more light on this issue since he

Dear Editor, I stay in HSR Layout Sec-2 and the attached picture is the road in front of VIBGYOR School Haralur Road. I have been staying in this locality for 5 years now and the road has remained like this. I am sure many people would have complained to BBMP or the Corporator. But I am not sure. Why are they not fixing it? I am sure they will have reasons but 5 years is too much. I don't know what other work they have than fixing a road for 5 years. What do we pay tax for? In addition to this the Road opposite to Rock view bar is pathetic. I request you to take up this matter with the authorities concerned and deliver results at the earliest. R.Chandrashekar

The Discussion Class (DC) has launched a new initiative recently called "Posters Free Tree" Andholan. As part of this, DC volunteers will give Freedom to trees from all the Posters pasted on it! It started off with a small drive in Basavanagudi where a DC volunteer,d an environmental activist and a tree lover, Mr. Akshay and his team removed illegal posters pasted on the Trees on 50 Feet Road, Basavanagudi, Bengaluru. As they were removing the posters, they discovered that these people who pasted papers and posters on trees not only used adhesives but also stapled the posters which will hamper the growth of trees. Every effort must be made to ensure such activities do not happen. Support this cause and prevent such happenings in future by asking these people not to indulge in such activities. Addressing a Person Should suit Situation

Salutations and Signature

ing

Brand

I had a session with professors and teachers recently, and we were talking on culture and communication. In one of the exercises they had to interpret behavior and respond to situations accordingly. One such situation was; your student sends you an email addressing you as “Hi Dr Murthy”…. I was surprised at the reaction of teachers. One and all felt that it wasn’t formal enough. In today’s business scenario, addressing anyone with “Hi” is not considered rude or informal. However, almost of the teachers felt that it wasn’t correct, and some were indignant! So, what is the correct or an acceptable form of salutation? Is it Dear Mrs. Murthy Hi Lalitha Dear Madam Respected Madam Lalitha Dear Lalitha Murthy Lalithaji….. In many western cultures addressing someone as ‘Dear’ is perfectly formal and correct thing to do; especially when you don’t know or you haven’t met or spoken to that person. Based on their reply, you could address them as Hi or even with no other salutation except their name. In hierarchical societies like India, we teach our children to say ‘Respected Sir or Madam’, Madamji etc., this is perfectly fine if you are addressing an Indian of Indian origin. However, in a global scenario, this may not be understood. Many may feel that an overt expression of respect is not needed. Addressing someone as ‘Dear …’is well received. Imagine a scenario when you are writing to a person whose gender is clear from his name. For example, the name Kiran or

Email: gadencityplus2013@gmail.com

Madhu is generally the name of a girl in North India. In the south, many boys are named ‘Kiran/ Madhu. If you are writing to Madhu Rao, it could be a male and addressing the person as “Dear Ms. Rao” could lead to embarrassment all round! In such cases it is better to address the person as “Dear Madhu Rao”… Writing the complete name saves embarrassment when the gender of the person is not known. In the second/ third email, you could always take a cue from the reply and address the person as he/she has addressed you. In India ‘Thanks and regards ‘has become the accepted form of signature. However, you cannot close a complaint mail with ‘Thanks and regards’! that is likely to sound cheeky! The different forms of signature are Regards Best regards Warm regards Yours sincerely (very formal) Best wishes Best (now used internationally) And of course ‘Thanks and regards’ if appropriate We need to understand the cultural preferences of the addressee before we send the email. In egalitarian cultures Hi, Dear and even no specific salutation may be accepted. In hierarchical cultures, it will be better to stick to Dear …. If your email is to be well received. Wisdom lies in understanding your relationship with the person you are writing to, his cultural exposure/ preference, and of course the purpose of your email. The Eternal Bond of Brother and Sister I was born in a secluded village on a mountain. Day after day, my parents plowed the yellow dry soil with their backs towards the sky. One day, I wanted to buy a handkerchief, which all girls around me seemed to have. So, one day I stole 50 cents from my father’s drawer. Father discovered about the stolen money right away. “Who stole the money?'” he asked my brother and me. I was stunned, too afraid to talk. Neither of us admitted to the fault, so he said, “Fine, if nobody wants to admit, you both should be punished!” Suddenly, my younger brother gripped Father’s hand and said, “Dad, I was the one who did it!” He took the blame, and punishment, for me. In the middle of the night, all of sudden, I cried out loudly. My brother covered my mouth with his little hand and said, “Sis, now don’t cry anymore. Everything has happened.” I will never forget my brother’s expression when he protected me. That year, my brother was 8 years old and I was 11 years old. I still hate myself for not having enough courage to admit what I did. Years went by, but the incident still seemed like it just happened yesterday. When my brother was in his last year of secondary school, he was accepted in an upper secondary school in the central part of town. At the same time, I was accepted into a university in the province. That night, Father squatted in the yard, smoking packet by packet. I could hear him ask my mother, “Both of our children, they have good results? Very good results?” Mother wiped off her tears and sighed, “What is the use? How can we possibly finance both of them?” At that time, my brother walked out, he stood in front of Father and said, “Dad, I don’t want to continue my study anymore, I have read enough books.” Father became angry. “Why do you have a spirit so weak? Even if it means I have to beg for money on the streets, I will send you two to school until you have both finished your studies!” And

then, he started to knock on every house in the village to borrow money. I stuck out my hand as gently as I could to my brother’s face, and told him, “A boy has to continue his study. If not, he will not be able to overcome this poverty we are experiencing.” I, on the other hand, had decided not to further my study at the university. Nobody knew that on the next day, before dawn, my brother left the house with a few pieces of worn-out clothes and a few dry beans. He sneaked to my side of the bed and left a note on my pillow, “Sis, getting into a university is not easy. I will go find a job and I will send money to you.” I held the note while sitting on my bed, and cried until I lost my voice. With the money father borrowed from the whole village, and the money my brother earned from carrying cement on his back at a construction site, finally, I managed to get to the third year of my study in the university. That year, my brother was 17 years old; I was 20 years old. One day, while I was studying in my room, my roommate came in and told me, “There’s a villager waiting for you outside!” Why would there be a villager looking for me? I walked out, and I saw my brother from afar. His whole body was covered with dirt, dust, cement and sand. I asked him, “Why did you not tell my roommate that you are my brother?” He replied with a smile, “Look at my appearance. What will they think if they would know that I am your brother? Won’t they laugh at you?” I

felt so touched, and tears filled my eyes. I swept away dirt and dust from my brother’s body. And told him with a lump in my throat, “I don’t care what people would say! You are my brother no matter what your appearance.” From his pocket, he took out a butterfly hair clip. He put it on my hair and said, ‘I saw all the girls in town are wearing it. I think you should also have one.’ I could not hold back myself anymore. I pulled my brother into my arms and cried. That year, my brother was 20 years old; I was 23 years old. After I got married, I lived in the city. Many times my husband invited my parents to come and live with us, but they didn’t want. They said once they left the village, they wouldn’t know what to do. My brother agreed with them. He said, “Sis, you just take care of your parents-in-law. I will take care of Mom and Dad here.” My husband became the directors of his factory. We asked my brother to accept the offer of being the manager in the maintenance department. But my brother rejected the offer. He insisted on working as a repairman instead for a start. One day, my brother was on the top of a ladder repairing a cable, when he got electrocuted, and was sent to the hospital. My husband and I visited him at the hospital. Looking at the plaster cast on his leg, I grumbled, “Why did you reject the offer of being a manager? Managers won’t do something dangerous like that. Now look at you – you are suffering a

serious injury. Why didn’t you just listen to us?” With a serious expression on his face, he defended his decision, “Think of your brother-in-law, he just became the director. If I, being uneducated, would become a manager, what kind of rumors would fly around?” My husband’s eyes filled up with tears, and then I said, “But you lack in education only because of me!” “Why do you talk about the past?” he said and then he held my hand. That year, he was 26 years old and I was 29 years old. My brother was 30 years old when he married a farmer girl from the village. During the wedding reception, the master of ceremonies asked him, “Who is the one person you respect and love the most?” Without even taking a time to think, he answered, “My sister.” He continued by telling a story I could not even remember. “When I was in primary school, the school was in a different village. Everyday, my sister and I would walk for 2 hours to school and back home. One day, I lost one of my gloves. My sister gave me one of hers. She wore only one glove and she had to walk far. When we got home, her hands were trembling because of the cold weather. She could not even hold her chopsticks. From that day on, I swore that as long as I lived, I would take care of my sister and would always be good to her.” Applause filled up the room. All guests turned their attention to me. I found it hard to speak, “In my whole life, the one I would like to thank most is my brother,” And in this happy occasion, in front of the crowd, tears were rolling down my face again. Moral: Love and care for the one you love every single day of your life. You may think what you did is just a small deed, but to that someone, it may mean a lot. Some relations are made to be last longer but they still need to be nurtured with love and care.

Kati Kabab Roll - Spicy Chicken Rolls This delicious dish is easily put together and really tasty. It originated in Kolkatta/ Calcutta and is often called the Calcutta Kati Roll. INGREDIENTS 3 tbsps vegetable/ canola/ sunflower cooking oil, 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 large onion sliced thinly, 1 tbsp garlic paste, 1 tbsp ginger paste 1 tsp coriander powder, 1 tsp cumin powder, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp garam masala powder 300 gms boneless, skinless chicken cut into 2" cubes/ pieces, 3 tomatoes chopped fine, Salt to taste 6 Parathas, 6 eggs, 1/2 cup vegetable/ canola/ sunflower cooking oil 1/2 cup Mint-Coriander Chutney (see

link below for recipe)eat the oil (3 tbsps) in a deep pan on medium heat. When hot, add the cumin seeds and fry for a minute. Add the sliced onions and fry till soft. Add garlic and ginger pastes and fry for 1 minute. Now add all spice

powders (including garam masala) and fry until oil begins to separate from the masala (spice-onion mix). Add the chicken pieces and brown. Add the tomato and salt to taste. Stir well and add 1/2 cup of water. Cook till chicken is tender. There should be almost no gravy at this stage. Heat a frying pan on low heat and add a tablespoon of oil to it. While the oil is heating, break an egg in a bowl. Season with salt to taste and whisk the egg till fluffy. Pour onto the pan and spread by tilting the pan from side to side. Now

quickly put a Paratha onto the still 'wet' egg and allow to cook. The egg will soon cook and 'set'. This is when you flip the egg-paratha over. Cook for 30 seconds and remove from the pan. To assemble the rolls: Lay one egg-paratha on a plate and spread Mint-Coriander Chutney on it. How much is a matter of personal choice. Now add roughly 2 tbsps of the cooked chicken in a line down the center of the paratha. Roll tightly. You can wrap in foil at this stage, to help keep the lot together and tidy for eating - the filling can fall out otherwise. Serve hot.
