Christmas Celebrated with Grandeur and Fervour

I

t is an established fact that Christmas is the one of the most popular festivals celebrated with great pomp and glory globally on the 25th of December, every year. Children wait for their Santa Claus’ gift on that day. He never disappoints them. He is always on time with that ever smiling face of his. Garden City Plus decided to visit a Christian family’s house and spend some time to know how the festival is celebrated. The team of Garden City Plus visited Mr. Cyril Nandan Nazareth’s family in sector 2, HSR Layout to a warm reception. We thank the entire family for the time spent with us and wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year too. Signifying the Christmas occasion, Mr. Cyril’s house was well decorated with a Christmas tree and the Crib showing the birth place of Jesus was well displayed. A big illuminated star hung in front of the house to relate this. A Gospel was narrated with a related music in the background to add the perfect environment to be a

Sanctum Santorum. Mr. Cyril lives with his wife, mother, daughter and a son. The family took us on a pilgrimage tour of the display and narrated the importance of each and every displayed matter in depth, which was knowledgeable. Plenty of dishes were there to be savoured, each one with rich taste. The plum cake was excellent and our

team gorged on it. There were rose cookies, rice laddus, kalkals and rava laddus. Besides, as they are Mangaloreans, Sannas, Chicken and roasted Turkey were the specialties. Fruits and desserts were in plenty with varieties. The list of invitees was a long one consisting of friends and neighbours. And, that would be dinner time. During this occasion, the family never misses on giving alms to the poor and

the less privileged.

TOP TEN QUOTES

"I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year" – Charles Dickens "Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection." – Winston Churchill "The only really blind person at Christmas time is he who

has not Christmas in his heart" – Helen Keller "God never gives someone a gift they are not capable of receiving. If he gives us the gift of Christmas, it is because we all have the ability to understand and receive it." – Pope Francis "Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people only once a year" – Victor Borge.

Editorial Let us Usher in 2016 for Good Productivity

The year 2015, was of mixed fortunes, feelings, activities, performances (good and bad), education and health. The environmental issues were on top priority in the entire city; this was the most disturbing fact since it could have very adverse effects on our health conditions. Garden City Plus shall be publishing a feature on the series of events - that took place (successful and unsuccessful), the performances of the RWAs and its schemes recommended and suggested that were implemented or not by the government and its agencies, the role of the corporators and the dos and don’ts on the part of the citizens and the governmental civic bodies, the lake and the civic systems, educational institutions role and the medical institutions role – in its next issue for all concerned to take note of it and act accordingly providing solutions where needed from the civic bodies and the active participation is solicited from the RWAs in particular, to get the job done at the end of the day. To start with, the role of the corporators and the garbage contractors’ approach to the issue of segregation will have to be kept a tab on for better results. This is the future activity which will have to be monitored and supervised with the active participation of all the RWAs concerned, else it may yet again flop. BBMP took pride in claiming that it has penalized a few commercial establishments and residents for failing to adhere to the law on segregation. But, it has also accept its follies and pay penalties for non – performance since many garbage collectors and contractors have still not adhered to the same law. Burning of waste is still on and mixed wastes being collected are also witnessed. But, one aspect is sure-strict vigilance is on the anvil and the violators will be penalized and punished as BBMP claims to have already claimed to have suspended some contractors for dereliction of duty. Hasiru Mithra and its team have already started by apprehending the littering public. Job well done. Garden City Plus wishes all its readers and the entire citizen community a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year to sdawn on You.

A Message from the Father of Holy Eucharist Church Garden City Plus team also ensured that it visits a Church and meet the Father for his thoughts and opinions of the World that is today and asked him for his message to be sent across to the citizens. This was what he had to say. The Father of the Holy Eucharist Church, situated at Mangammanapalya on Hosur road, Fr. Rajarathainam, has been doing the Holy services to God and the community since 2010, in this Church. Showing a lot of concern on humanity, he said, “We need to be focusing more on God. A lot of mundane things are given too much of importance. Once we importance to God, who is the Author of our lives, everything else will turn out to be a Blessing”. On his view of tolerance or intolerance, he continued to say, “Tolerating means accepting and each one has his or her own opinion, so be it”. He was emphatic in his message to the people- “Do not get discouraged by anything, once we give the control to God, then everything we do is for good. People who would yearn for peace of mind, should know that God loves us. He knows everything and is the most knowledgeable. He will give even without asking. So believe in God and surrender before Him”, he concluded. “Let us have Peace and Unity as our New Year resolution” was his advice.

Continued from Pg 1 "My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?" – Bob Hope "That's the true spirit of Christmas; people being helped by people other than me." – Jerry Seinfeld

T

"Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts." – Janice Maeditere "He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree." – Roy L. Smith "Let's just say that on this day, a million years ago, a dude was born who most of us think was magic. But

others don't, and that's cool. But we're probably right. Amen." – Homer Simpson. These are the ten quotes of eminent personalities around the globe.

Let us Bring Harmony and Peace Christians believe that Christ was born into this world to redeem us from our sins. Christ is the symbol of hope, love, peace, joy and mercy of God, hence during this festival Christians believe in sharing and caring and reach out to the poor and needy, the disabled, sick, homeless so that we can make the Christmas celebration even more meaningful. In today’s world man has forgotten what humanity is and has become very impatient, there is no value for another human’s life, no respect for women in society, no tolerance to other religions which is leading to a lot of unrest and hatred in the world. The Christmas festival is not confined to one community. Christ was born in this world for unity, integrity and development of the entire human race; so that we may all attain Heavenly Peace. The celebration of the birth of Christ becomes more meaningful when all join together for the celebration." It is high time that we unite and maintain peace and harmony within our neighbourhood. I would like to see my City of Bangalore to regain its peace what I had seen in my youthful days. During the festival season, I call upon and request all the people to commit themselves to maintaining peace in the city. Let all the citizens, government officials, local MLAs, administrators at all levels put their efforts to end disharmony, corruption and respect human life. I take this opportunity to wish all of you, the people of the city of Bengaluru and Karnataka a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Hasiru Mithra and its Team’s Laudable Act 1

I

t is Incredible HSR! Soon after the High Court’s Directions, the BBMP went into the act of penalizing residents as though it was only waiting for this opportunity to pounce upon the residents for their follies. It took pride in saying it has starting penalizing the violators who had not segregated the waste as per the HC’s directions. The residents went one step further. They have shot pictures of waste being burnt by the contractors and the separate bins were not in place in many areas. At the same time they also took the littering residents to task and warned them too with stringent measures if found to commit the mistake the next time. Garden City Plus and its team was only too pleased to participate in a road cleaning activity spear-headed by Hasiru Mithra, a ‘Go Green Initiative’ in HSR. Initially the drive was only to identify the black spots and find methods and solutions to purify them and ensure these spots are never again littered. In the process, the drive headed by Ms Kavitha Reddy and Ms. Shanthi showed the way of not only cleaning and purifying the area, but also to stalk the violators of the HC directions. Hence, Garden City Plus decided to do a photo feature on this noble effort by this team. The adjoining photographs speak volumes, like it is said, “a photograph speaks a thousand words” in the journalistic jargon. We did take a lot of pictures while the team caught the littering residents red-handed by following them for quite a distance before the wastes were finally disposed in unauthorized locations.

2

Website: www.gardencityplus.com

There was this woman who, after walking quite a distance silently disposed the plastic bag filled with wet waste, by just dropping it by her side as though she was hiring an auto rickshaw. This was the limit and the height of literacy, or, is it illiteracy?

Another instance that caught the eye was this literate gentleman, who

walked, walked and walked relentlessly

to find a spot in disposing the garbage he was carrying (he too carried it in a plastic bag). Ultimately, the moment he

3

found one, he lost no time in throwing it casually and stared continuing with his walk. Ms. Shanthi again gave apiece of her mind to the literate gentleman and made him pick the filth he had disposed and made him swear that he would not commit this mistake again. Both the incidents or, shall we accidents, took place on the 14th main, 7th sector on the morning of 25th December, the Christmas Day. The entire team had this to say, “Hasiru Mithra team brought in a change on 14th main. Christmas well spent”. The drive started as early as 8am and wound up till 11am. This ‘drive’ was made effective with the support of the BBMP and the Pourmakarmikas. At this juncture, one point has to be definitely raised. When the residents of HSR, who are termed as the literates, the elites, the ones fighting for righteousness and of course the people who join the ranks first to point the accusing finger on the drop of a hat at the officials concerned for non-performance, deserve to behave in such a fashion? Are they to be educated? Do they not have that much of a responsibility on them to take care of their own neighbourhood and community? The best part noticed in these instances was the fact that the ones who littered did not do it near their places of residences, lest they be caught. Hence, they walked that extra mile to dispose the un-segregated waste. When will be more responsible to give ourselves a good living atmosphere? Kudos, to the team of HASIRU MITHRA!

difficult. Here Palliative Care plays a major role, which will help the victim and family to understand and cope with the situation in a better way. As many of the palliative care institutes works in hand with NGOs , a patient’s concerns like children education , job for the family member and other related issues can be taken care. There is wrong a concept that Palliative means ‘End of Life’ Care, but both of them are different. Palliative care doesn’t mean that it is going to be the End of Life. Palliative care starts from the first stage of treatment itself, where it helps in understanding the disease and treatment plan which will in fact enhance the positive outcome. Care is delivered to any age group at any stage of disease by an expert medical team. Focus will be on symptomatic management more to improve the quality of life. Even the family members are involved in treatment and care planning. The patient and his family will be educated in each and every step about the treatment plan and the expected outcome. Palliative care neither fastens nor delays the death, but it will ensure better quality of life and a peaceful death. As we all know death is inevitable, Palliative care provides the holistic care even if it is concerns the patient’s religious believes.

While looking into the Name Board of the Hospital or Palliative care Centre, it is nothing other than a sign board for a common man, but it means a lot to those who are related to it in some way. Memories of a palliative care centre make your vision blurred with tears if you ever had an experience inside. Each person working with a palliative care centre will have many stories to relate which cannot be forgotten easily in life. Handling hopeless patients, trying to make them smile,

Palliative Care Boosts Self Confidence of the Terminally ill

P

alliative care is one of t h e milestones in modern medical science; it is referred to patients who are seriously ill. It was started with the concept of giving care to patients who are in the last stage of ailment, especially cancer. Now Palliative care is not limited to cancer it is widely open for all other medical condition where cure is limited like chronic kidney diseases, congestive cardiac failure, Alzheimer’s disease etc. We can say ‘NO’ to Cure but NOT to Care. The aim of Palliative care is to provide better quality of life for the patient as well as to their families. We saw many people sitting in front of chemotherapy unit without any smile in faces. “Who will be there for my family after me?” The common question arises in their minds. Physical pain is nothing while comparing with emotional pain. Along with the shock of illness all other problems like financial issues, security of the family, children’s education, to name a few will be disturbing the victim and finally the stress will draw them into social isolation. Coping with the situation is really

Website: www.gardencityplus.com

fulfilling their wishes, listening to their words will help to mould ourselves to be real human beings. Life is nothing else if you look deep into it. Care, compassion and presence of mind are more important in a Palliative care centre more than anything else. Each Patient is unique so does an approach which also varies. Patients will sleep for the entire day to avoid conversation with others or may be due to weakness. Care giver should be competent enough to manage the scenario. The mind of the care giver

should be so calm that it should not think of anything else other than the needs of the patient. Never sympathise a patient, but be compassionate and empathetic to provide the best services without any discrimination or disparity. Cleaning of the infected foul smelling wound, taking out maggots or worms, answering to multiple queries, conveying sad news are all challenging tasks for the doctors and nurses. Palliative care in community setting has more challenges. Many social barriers still exist in well educated families. Very few communicable diseases exist now and most of the palliative care patients do not fall into that category. Still people are afraid to go near such patients for fear of the disease being contagious. Some families in villages isolate the victims. Self confidence of such diseased victims is also deprived due to their physical challenges. Surgery, Chemotherapy and presence of wound may alter the physical appearances too. Counseling plays another major part in palliative care. Individual, family or group counseling are equally important. Getting the patient’s confidence and trust is difficult especially in the stressful situation. Counselors give a patient hearing to the patient’s words and put all their efforts to win the

patient’s trust for him to open up with the problems like fear, anxiety, doubts, and wishes. Counselors work as a bridge between the patient and his surroundings to connect with his family, health team and other NGOs. Getting patients engaged with activities will help in removing the negative thoughts. NGOs are providing great support to all these organizations. Many of us are spending lots of money unnecessarily; can’t we spend hundred rupees or one day for palliative care service? It is not about participating in a campaign or sharing a picture or video in face book or any other social media. It’s all about how you put yourself into it. Many centers receive donations in many ways. Our used clothes, furniture and other household items are useful. Do not throw them. Donate. It is useful for many palliative care centers, as many of them work as a service centre without collecting any money from the patient. Anyway, we can be proud as we have advanced in Palliative care but still have a lot to do on this front. The government should take more initiatives for easy access to palliative care centre and spread awareness among the public. Do serve your community and win a heart. Love has no Barriers and Boundaries A

poor guy meets a rich girl. They fall in love. Girl goes back to her country. Boy promises to make it big and visit her. Time passes but he struggles to make both ends meet. He decides to fulfill his promise – picks up a cycle and sets on a journey across 8 countries to meet the love of his life! No, this isn’t the story of an upcoming Bollywood movie. Although it pretty

much qualifies to be one! This is the story of Dr. Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia from India and Charlotte Von Schedvin from Sweden and it has all the elements of a Bollywood blockbuster – emotion, drama and lots of love. An epic saga of romance, PK proves that when love is determined, it pushes all boundaries. Born in 1949 into a poor weaver family of Odisha,

Dhenkanal who were considered untouchables, PK was a gifted artist. However, the family didn’t have enough money to finance his education. He would often find himself at the receiving end of insult due to the dreaded caste system. Later In 1971, he joined College of Art in New Delhi and gained popularity for making portraits. In 1975, 19-year-old Charlotte Von

Sledvin, a student in London, heard about him and traveled all the way to India to get her portrait made. As the stars had conspired, during the course of making the portrait, he was possessed by her beauty and she, with his sheer simplicity. Love had set in. Charlotte took the Indian name Charulata and they both married following traditional rituals.

When it was time for Charlotte to leave, she asked her husband to come along, however, PK was still a student and wanted to finish his studies. When she offered to send air tickets later, he refused saying he would come to meet her on his own. After she left, the two kept in touch through letters. PK’s love-filled heart had made the promise, but the reality of having no money to fulfill it stared PK in the eyes. But he was not one to give up. He sold all his belongings and bought a second-hand bicycle. Carrying all his paints and brushes along, he did the unthinkable. He set out on a voyage to the Far West with a hope to reunite with his love. This was back in 1978.He reached Amritsar from New Delhi before entering Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria and Denmark. His cycle broke down many times on the way and he even had to go on without food for days. But nothing could break his will. After 4 months and 3 weeks of backbreaking journey, he finally reached Gothenburg, Sweden. Those were the days when not many countries required visa for travelling. Upon reaching, he was questioned by Swedish immigration officers who were amazed to see a man who had come from India riding a bicycle. PK told them the reason behind his visit and produced photographs of his marriage with Charlotte.

Authorities were surprised and did not believe that someone of royal blood from Europe would marry a poor Indian. The sudden revelation made even PK skeptical whether his lady love would accept him or not. When Charlotte learned about the man from India who cycled all the way for around 5 months, she drove to Gothenburg and received her husband with unbridled happiness. Her parents accepted Pradyumna as a part of their family by breaking a royal tradition that prohibited non-white people from residing with the nobles. After 40 years of marriage, Dr PK Mahanandia serves as the Odiya Cultural Ambassador of India to Sweden and lives with his wife Charlotte and 2 children in Sweden. His village, that once shunned him as an untouchable, now gives a thundering welcome every time he makes a

visit. Pradyumna is well known in Sweden as an artist and is working as an Adviser, Art and Culture, under the Swedish Government. Swedish Government in honour of their love has made films to document this immortal love of the century. His paintings have been exhibited in major cities of the world and have found places in the prestigious UNICEF greeting cards. On 4 January 2012, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree (Degree of Honoris Causa) from Utkal University of Culture (UUC) in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha state, India. He was also designated as the Oriya Cultural ambassador to Sweden by the Government of Odisha. Renowned Bollywood film maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is planning to make a film on the love story of PK Mahanandia and Charlotte.

Jamshedpur uses Plastic Waste to make Roads

J

amshedpur, a city in the state of Jharkhand, is setting an example when it comes to recycling plastics and putting it to use. They are using plastic waste to construct roads. We have to keep in mind that plastics are non-biodegradable substances and are very hard to dispose of. Plastic waste is collected from across the city and brought to 10 collection centers. The waste is then broken down by shredding it to 2 mm to 4 mm before processing it further. Plastic waste is then mixed with Bitumen, an oil based substance, used as a common binder in road construction. Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company (Jusco), a subsidiary company of Tata Steel, has undertaken an initiative to use plastic waste for road construction in Jamshedpur. Till now, around 50 kms of roads has

been constructed under this project. Bitumen Technology (Dry Process) patented by Thyagarajar College of Engineering (TCE), Tiruppurankundram, Madurai, is being used on plastic waste to construct roads. The roads constructed using this technology are of better quality and

Website: www.gardencityplus.com

don’t require maintenance in first five years. Now, all the roads in Jamshedpur contain 20 to 30 percent plastic waste mixed with bitumen. For every one km long and four metre wide road made using this technology, one tonne of bitumen costing Rs 50,000 is saved. Jusco has received requests from many states for replicating the technology but JUSCO has no plans of commercialising this discovery, only to use it to serve society. Ambikapur, in the state of Chhattisgarh too has tried this technology. No wonder, Jamshedpur is the 7th cleanest city in India.
