BBMP Suggests Measures to Compost at Home
B
BMP Commissioner Sri Manjunath Prasad having experienced home composting first hand, has become a convinced evangelist of home composting. He has directed all zonal joint commissioners to train BBMP officials on segregation and home composting so that they can advocate the message to public. To this effect, on March 15th, Mr. Veerabadhraswamy, Joint Commissioner, Bommanahalli, and SE Suguna hosted SWMRT members Ms. Vani Murthy, Dr Shanthi Tummala and volunteers of HSR Citizen Forum for a training session on segregation and home composting. The session was attended by Health Inspectors, AEs, AEEs of Engineering department and revenue department.
The JC spoke of how his day begins with calls on garbage and ends with stinker messages on KCDC. He explained that unless BBMP staff set an example of being responsible for their waste, all the preaching would fall on deaf ears. Dr. Shanthi urged the team that is responsible for enforcement of segregation needs to segregate at home. Two bins one bag method of three-way segregation as mandated by Hon High Court and the importance of colour coding was explained. Ms. Vani Murthy, the popular face of composting in the city, took the team through the simplest method of aerobic composting using an aerated container and dry leaves. She called on everybody to consider every dry leaf falling from the tree as money.
“These dry leaves can give us black gold to grow our own nutritious food whose worth cannot be measured in money, she said. One of the health inspectors spoke of how he had seen composting happening as a child at his village, but had not thought about it in the urban setting. One other official spoke of the way he got upset with how expensive, flowers have become and started growing his own flowers for puja. Many were motivated to start composting immediately and to pick up composting kits. The volunteers had got vegetable waste and soaked microbial coco peat powder for the demonstration.

Residents to Observe Silent Protest against KCDC on Mar 19
A
lot has been written about KCDC and its inept handling of the activities in its Plant. Recently, the residents had voiced their concern on the ‘Leachate Issue’, which was seen flowing into SS Palya Lake, which have disastrous effects on living beings. Who was responsible? When contacted, there are reports leading to suggest allegedly, that the officers concerned have mismanaged the entire episode turning this into a burning problem. This has to be addressed on a war footing. Adding misery is the stench emanating again from the Plant making breathing difficult for residents around the area. In connection with this, ‘Right to Breathe' is the slogan the residents around Somasundarapalya Lake in HSR Sector II came up with. It is highly a residential area where there are hospitals and schools on the boundary of the unit. They are not following a scientific method of handling the waste. Over 100 residents protested on March 13 after the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials cancelled the grievance meeting with those affected by Karnataka Compost Development
Corporation plant at HSR Layout. They alleged apathy shown to them and fake assurances from the authorities over its closure. The plant continues to be mismanaged and the foul smell has been a persistent nuisance for the residents. The residents had plans to discuss major issues such as illegal dumping of garbage, and health issues. The distressed residents have planned a major demonstration on March 19, demanding shutdown of the compost plant from the government.
“We want shutdown of the KCDC. The lake has been encroached and the entire wetland of the lake is gone,” says one of the residents. In this connection, the residents have mustered support not only from their area, but also from the surrounding areas too, which are equally concerned about the major problem the residents face. On March 19, the KHHSP RWA along with sector 2 residents and many residents from other sectors of HSR have decided to join hands in observing a silent
protest near the KCDC Plant and BBMP. Kaagaz Foundation, along with the RWA, has also joined this campaign by organizing a Blood Donation Camp, ‘Blood to Breathe’ at Mount Litera Zee School, Kudlu, between 9 am and 12.30 pm. But, the point shall not be the shutdown of the Plant, though it is the demand of the residents. This demand seems to be out of frustration against the officials of KCDC and BBMP for their lackadaisical approach towards finding a solution to the issue which is now many years old. Solution has to be sought and provided by effectively implementing it to ensure the residents live to breathe and breathe to live. Definitely this cannot go on as is the current situation. The stench is making the situation from bad to worse. If the Plant is shut down, then what would be the alternative to the waste generated by the residents of HSR? Where will it go? How will it be rid off? Plenty of such questions will arise leading to difficulty to other localities making it difficult for them. Let us not pass the buck. Instead, find a permanent solution

buttons that control a smartphone. Called SkinMarks, the tattoos consists of embedded sensors that let users touch, squeeze or slide fingers over certain body marks to access functions on the handset. SkinMarks was developed by a team of scientists at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany, and in collaboration with Google.
The researches noticed how ‘the body provides many recognizable landmarks due to the underlying skeletal structure and variations in skin texture, elasticity, and color’, which led to the innovation. ‘Through a vastly reduced tattoo thickness and increased stretchability, a SkinMark is suffi- ciently thin and flexible to conform to irregular geom-
etry, like flexure lines and protruding bones, while still allowing the user to reference those landmarks actually or visually.’ The tattoos are made of paper with wires and electrodes printed on top of them, reports New Scientist. And the SkinMarks are said to be thinner than the width of a human hair. ‘To fabricate an interactive tattoo, we use commercially available temporary tattoo paper (Tattoo Decal Paper) as the substrate, as proposed in recent work,’ reads the study. ‘We screen print one or multiple layers of functional inks onto it. After printing each layer, the ink is heat cured with a heat gun (130 C or 266 F for 3 minutes).’ Some tattoos are designed to work in different ways depending on how your finger is bent - you can change music
by bending your finger. Another lays over your knuckles and when you drag your finger across, it changes the volume of the music player. There are also ones that are electroluminescent, which glow when current passes through it. These tattoos can be shaped like a social media app’s icon and will light up when you receive a notification from the platform. A Heart Mark, which is a touchsensitive heart-shaped display, augments a birthmark in order to notify users about the availability of a loved one. And touching it starts a call with that person. And Capture Mark that resembles ‘a circular ball for capturing virtual objects in augmented reality games, e.g. treasures or Pokemon.

builder around. Before you start piling on, recognize that there are two types of composting: cold and hot. Cold composting is as simple as collecting yard waste or taking out the organic materials in your trash (such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds and filters, and eggshells) and then corralling them in a pile or bin. Over the course of a year or so, the material will decompose. Hot composting is for the more serious gardener, and you get compost in one to three months during warm weather. Four ingredients are required for fast-cooking hot compost: nitrogen, carbon, air, and water. Together, these items feed microorganisms, which speed up the process of decay To create your own organic hot-compost heap, wait until you have enough materials to make a pile at least 3 feet deep. Then, to ensure an even composition of materials, create alternating 4- to 8-inch-deep layers of green materials (kitchen scraps, fresh leaves, coffee grounds) and brown materials (dried leaves, shredded paper, untreated sawdust). Sprinkle
posts for the corners, and wrap wire fencing around them. The fence mesh should be small enough that materials won't fall out. When the compost is ready, unwind the wire and scoop the compost from the bottom of the pile. Then re-pile the not-yet-decomposed materials and wrap the wire back around the heap Permanent Bins More permanent bins can be constructed of wood or masonry blocks. Here, boards are added to the bin's front as the pile grows taller.
1. Dry leaves 2. Finely chopped wood and bark chips 3. Shredded newspaper 4. Straw Check to see if your pile is decompos- 5. Sawdust from untreated ing by monitoring temperature. Check the temperature of the pile with a thermometer, or simply reach into the middle of the pile with your hand. During the growing season, you should provide the pile with oxygen by turning it once a week with a garden fork. The best time to turn the compost is when the center of the pile feels warm or the thermometer reads between 130 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Stirring up the pile helps it cook
faster and prevents material from becoming matted down and developing a bad odor. At this point, the layers have served their purpose of creating equal amounts of green and brown materials throughout the pile, so stir thoroughly. When the compost no longer gives off heat and becomes dry, brown, and crumbly, it's fully cooked and ready to feed to the garden. Good Green Materials 1. Fruit scraps 2. Vegetable scraps 3. Eggshells 4. Coffee grounds 5. Grass and plant clippings Good Brown Materials
wood Don't Compost With: 1. Anything containing meat, oil, fat, or grease 2. Diseased plant materials 3. Sawdust or chips from pressure-treated wood 4. Dog or cat feces 5. Weeds that go to seed 6. Dairy products Build Your Own Compost Bin A compost bin helps contain your compost pile and makes it more attractive. While you can buy a commercial plastic container from a garden center, it's easy to build your own. A simple round or square structure can be made from fencing wire. The bin should be at least 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep to provide enough space for materials to heat up. Use untreated wood or metal fence
Compost Condos While one compost pile is good, many hard-core gardeners feel three is better. By building a trio of bins, you can compost in stages: one bin will be ready, one will be brewing, and one will just be starting. A triple bin is best for a more active composting
system. Turn the pile into the next bin when it reaches peak internal heat. Compost Tumblers Tumbler-style composters come in several configurations. The most common is the horizontal drum mounted on wheels or axles to allow mixing of materials.

Donating Blood reduces risk of Heart Attack and Cancer
Research discovered donating blood can help reduce the risk of heart attacks and cancer It has this affect by reducing iron levels which can thicken blood and increase free-radical damage Beneficial for weight watchers too as people burn 650 calories with every pint donated We all know giving blood provides an essential lifeline to those in need, but a growing body of research demonstrates that it could have health benefits for the donor too. Findings have shown that donating blood reduces the risk of heart attacks and even cancer. It even burns 650 calories for every pint given. It is thought that the benefits arise from lowering high iron levels. Iron affects how thick and sticky the texture of the blood is. High iron levels causes the blood to be thicker. Raised iron levels also accelerate the oxidisation process of cholesterol. This can affect blood consistency and create increased friction as it travels through blood vessels. As this increases wear and tear to the lining of arteries it could then contribute to cardiovascular disease. Because donating blood removes some of its iron content, it may therefore have a protective benefit if
and raisins. • Get a good night's sleep. • Drink an extra 16 oz. of water or nonalcoholic fluids before the donation. • Eat a healthy meal before your donation. Avoid fatty foods, such as hamburgers, fries or ice cream before donating. (Fatty foods can affect the tests done on your blood. If there is too much fat in your blood, your donation cannot be tested for infectious diseases and the blood will not be used for transfusion.) • If you are a platelet donor, remember that your system must be free of aspirin for two days prior to donation.
done on a consistent basis by helping thin the blood. In line with this theory, a four-and-ahalf-year study involving 1,200 people found those who made bi-annual blood donations had a lower incidence of cancer and mortality than those who didn’t because blood donations lowered their iron levels. However, these benefits depend on making donations on a regular basis, rather than once in a while. Another side effect of donating blood
is that it can burns a large number of calories too. After donating blood, the body replaces all of the blood volume within 48 hours, and all the red blood cells within four to eight weeks. Tips for a Successful Donation Before Your Donation • Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet by eating iron rich foods, such as red meat, fish, poultry, beans, spinach, iron-fortified cereals
During Your Donation • Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow. • Let the person taking your blood know if you have a preferred arm and show them any good veins that have been used successfully in the past to draw blood. • Relax, listen to music, talk to other donors or read during the donation process. • Take the time to enjoy a snack and a drink in the refreshments area immediately after donating.
• Drink an extra four 8 glasses of liquids and avoid alcohol over the next 24 hours. • Remove the wrap bandage (if you had one put on your arm) within the next hour. • Keep the strip bandage on for the next several hours. • To avoid a skin rash, clean the area around the strip bandage with soap and water. • Do not do any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day. • If the needle site starts to bleed, apply pressure to it and raise your arm straight up for about 5-10 minutes or until bleeding stops. • If you experience dizziness or lightheadedness after donation, stop what you are doing and sit down or lie down until you feel better. Avoid performing any activity where fainting may lead to injury for at least 24 hours.
