Entire HSR to Protest for Hygiene against KCDC Ops on Oct 31
A
ll roads shall lead to KCDC plant on the 31st of October so far as the residents of HSR are concerned. Perhaps, this could be the first time that the entire layout is staging a protest for a need which is primarily 2nd sector’s and people living in and around Somsundarpalya. This is a fight the residents are in the ring since years. They had a brief respite when the HC had stayed the compost operations in 2007. But, due to the problems the government started facing in the other landfills, the decision was relaxed and permission granted to resume operations in 2010. KCDC is a compost unit of the Government of Karnataka at HSR II sector. It is said that the unit was initially running with a composting capacity of 250 tonnes, which eventually increased to around 1000 tonnes. As the population increased, the tonnage too increased. But, the villagers claim that it was to only necessitate the dump from areas in and around HSR layout. Instead, of

late it is being observed that the truck loads of garbage arrive from areas in Jayanagar, JP Nagar and even City Market too. Recently a few residents from sector II had visited the place due to the foul
and pungent smell emanating from the plant. To their dismay, the people living in Somsundarpalya village lead a pathetic life with no respite from the foul smell and also from any quarters including the government. They are

putting up with this problematic issue having ailments including respiratory, skin and eye infections. An elderly woman residing in the village since 60 years said that she lost her grandson due to respiratory
problem. Another 10 year old also succumbed to the killer plant 3 months back. It is suspected that the problems in living in the area started once the capacity of conversion increased. If this could be decreased to around 250 tonnes, perhaps the effect would not be so severe, it is said according to sources. The smell does not get proliferated, which is the root cause of the problems faced by so many residents including around people residing in 70 to 80 multi storied buildings apart from the villagers and the residents of sector II and other sectors too. The unit is said to be constructed where once the lake of this area was. Now the lake is reduced to 1/3rd of its original size. The ill-effects in entirety are that the quality of the ground water level has very much gone down, thanks to the poor development of the area in terms of planning and health care of residents. The quality of purity and potability of water has also deteriorated, it is alleged. << Continued on Pg 2 >>

Mobile Vendors Rule Pavements

aking way for the economically weaker sections to make a living by earning through their own known source of business is a right which cannot be deprived. But, it should not be at the cost of the others making use of the space provided for the public to at least walk on the pavements that exist. Can they be deprived? No, is the answer. First of all, the pavements are too short for anyone to even consider << Civic Issue >> taking a walk. Over and above this the weeds and the trees planted right in the middle are turning to be hurdles to navigate to take a free walk. Despite these shortcomings, if a person puts shop in the already congested space, then where is the question of people using the pavements for their safety? These mobile shops have no right to have their commercial activities on such places. The authorities concerned are simply turning a blind eye towards these inconveniences caused to public just o ‘accommodate’ these petty shop owners. On questioning on their rights of ownership on such places, they either plead their economic
status or admonish the fact by threatening the questioner to ‘take care of his business or face consequences’. This only goes to establish that these petty shop owners have a backing. This practice has to be stopped. Let them have their business in a place where it does not disturb other from having their rights to use the space, which is rightfully theirs. The authorities will have to enforce strict rules to ensure that this is no longer continued since it could also

This matter has been doing the rounds since 2003 and since then, no positive action has been taken to protect humanity. The villagers claim that no politician is bothered about them. Medical expenses are also not taken care of. In fact, the matter was discussed with CMC, later BBMP and also BDA. Some technology should be used to ensure that the smell does not spread out of this area. People residing here will need to have access for drinking water as water available here is totally contaminated and they are forced to go all the way to parangipalya to fetch water. Many times they spend for mineral water for drinking purposes. An Electric Pole Walks Encroachment in the name of Decoration? that ‘Extra Mile’
O
ne of the daring violations committed perhaps could be the photograph which is self explanatory. This gross violation is a case of study in HSR II sector. Is it a case of being ‘Hand in Glove’? Or, is it a violation on the part of the owner of the building in HSR sector2, between 29th cross and 30th cross? Or, still worse, is it a case of sheer negligence on the part of BESCOM? The picture clearly shows that in order to ‘accommodate’ that little encroachment, an electric pole itself is moved to suit the owner. The other electric poles are all aligned well, but for this sole pole which has danced away out of its boundary to permit the ‘other one person’ some space, which does not belong to him, to dance. This is atrocious. BESCOM has to swing into action and restore the pole to its original place, for it to be aligned with the other poles for equality and substantiality. Sector II RWA, take cognizance of the fact.
T
he tiles laid on the pavements no doubt give the dazzling and elite look. But whose land is this anyway? Most of the private establishments have taken it for granted that the land which leads to their place of work also belongs to them. Has permission been taken for the decorated pieces of stone slabs to be laid on pavements which are supposed to be for public use? This point of view is in HSR Sector 3. Garden City Plus will of course have an answer very soon. This is not the only place of commercial activity that has such glorified pavements, there are many more. Each one will be identified and probed in to in the coming days and clear the air. If permission is granted by the authorities, then they will have to render an answer for having shown this biased grant, be it BDA or BBMP. If not, how could they allow these establishments to function for so many years with this violation which has gone unnoticed, perhaps?

Loosely fixed Drainage slabs and Potholes – Sec 2
H
eadaches are too many for HSR Sector 2 for many reasons. Sector 2 of HSR layout seems to be having problems up to the brim on many issues. The road, 31st main, just behind the NIFT College seems to be in an atrocious condition that vehicles to ply on the road are just too difficult to negotiate. Garden City Plus, which had vowed
two weeks earlier to highlight these issues in the coming weeks, has indeed plenty of such shoddy jobs done by the governmental agencies, on hand. These will be published in the interest of the public and then
shall be visiting all the respective authorities concerned and get their response on each of these issues for the respective RWAs to take the follow up work required to finish the pending works, repair or fresh. The bend on this road of discussion is quite dangerous, especially for the two wheelers, not that the four wheelers are any safer. There are two big potholes one after the other and the
uneven slabs which sink at any given point of time could prove fatal over a period of time. Action has to be taken both from the RWA and the authorities to make this junction safer.

his generation is bringing in a lot of innovative methods to earn a living with dignity. People from other districts of our State and even people from other States have thronged the city for want of work and earn a livelihood. But, only the mode of work differs from person to person. Hussain Basha, 35, hails from Hosapete, Ballari district arrived in this city a month and a half back to make a living. He had carried his sewing machine with him, which is only asset since he is a tailor. He was a disappointed man since he could not get a job of his liking and decided to do something on his own. He started carrying this machine with him and ventured to sell bananas. He utterly failed and was a dejected man. A month ago, he saw a man pushing his cart door to door to press clothes of the residents in their presence at their places. This struck an idea and dawned to him that he can indeed adopt the same method to stitch dresses which have to be altered. Since the regular tailors of today do not take orders for alterations, he made an attempt offering to do cloth altering jobs for people. This instantly drew

espite the police cracking severely on the traffic violators, it seems there is no end for violations. The police on their part have taken up awareness programmes and have also publicized the violators being booked through the media. The motorists in particular seem to be unbothered of the crackdown. Perhaps, they feel that they pay the fine and are let off so that they can continue with their obstinacy which shows that they care a damn to the rules. Strict penalties have to be levied so that the culprits are not let loose. So much so, that the violations are taking place in big establishments such as the one in the photograph. This is nuisance caused to public. These establishments instead of instructing their employees to adhere to the rules and are provided with alternate parking facilities, have opted to resort to ‘we do not care’ attitude, which does not digest well with the system. The ‘No Parking’ sign board is too clear for one to miss. Despite this, four wheelers too are seen being parked. By the way, what in the world is this young man trying to do? Garbage Piles up in Sec 3
Residents speak
n spite of umpteen numbers of complaints with the authorities concerned, it seems that they have all fallen in to deaf ears. HSR layout sector 3 has also joined the sec 2 in putting up with this routine raising of the garbage issues. Or, so it seems. Our area is perhaps the latest one targeted in this regard. Garbage is piling on with no solution
to no avail. On the contrary, I got a few calls from BBMP stating that the garbage piled has been lifted and is now cleared. But, it is not the fact. It still remains as it is. This stink and filthy stuff have lead to pigs invading the area in large numbers, which has still become troublesome. Will the hygiene be restored on time? This looks to be next to impossible as on
seen soon near 24th cross, 17 A main. I have personally registered a complaint on ichanemycity.com but
the present situation. It has grown in to a pigs’ paradise. Can you raise this issue and do something for residents to breathe clean and fresh air? It will be appreciated if it is done in consultation with the authorities concerned. Archana Singh HSR, Sector 3, resident.

Navaratri - Nine forms of Shakti
N
avaratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu Deity Durga. The word Navaratri means 'nine nights' in Sanskrit, Nava meaning nine and Ratri meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Devi are worshipped. The tenth day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or "Dussehra". Navaratri is an important major festival and is celebrated all over India and Nepal. Diwali the festival of lights is celebrated twenty days after Dasera. Though there are total five types of Navaratri that come in a year, but Sharad Navaratri is the most popular one. The beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn are considered to be important junctions of climatic and solar influences. These two periods are taken as sacred opportunities for the worship of the Divine Mother Durga. The dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar. on which each women follow tradition to wear three colours of dress on Navaratri. Navaratri represents a celebration of the Goddess Amba, (the Power). Navaratri or Navadurga Parva happens to be the most auspicious and unique period of devotional sadhanas and worship of Shakti (the sublime, ultimate, absolute creative energy) of the Divine conceptualized as the Mother Goddess-Durga, whose worship dates back to prehistoric times before the dawn of the Vedic age. A whole chapter in the tenth mandal of the Rigveda addresses the devotional sadhanas of Shakti. The "Devi Sukta" and "Isha Sukta" of the Rigveda and "Ratri Sukta" of the Samveda similarly sing paeans of praise of sadhanas of Shakti. In fact, before the beginning of the legendary war between the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata – a foundational Sanskrit epic in the Hindu tradition – Lord Krishna worshipped Durga, the Goddess of Shakti, for the victory of the Pandvas. Lord Brahma is cited in the Markandey Purana as mentioning to Rishi Markandey that the first incarnation of Shakti was as Shailputri. Further incarnations of the Divine Mother are: Brahmcharñi, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri in that order. These nine manifestations of Shakti, are worshipped as "Nava-Durga". The fifth chapter of the Rudra Sanhita of Shiva Purana also vividly describes the various Divine Emanations of Durga. Since the Vedic Age of the Rishies, the devotional practices recommended
during Navaratri are primarily those of Gayatri Anushthana. In the Vedic Age of the Indian Culture, the religious philosophy and devotional practices were focused towards true knowledge and ultimate realization of the supreme power of Gayatri (Bram Shakti). The Vedas were the basis of all streams of spirituality and science those days. Gayatri has been the source of the divine powers of the gods and goddesses in the heavens and their angelic manifestations and incarnations. The Navaratri commences on the first day (pratipada) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashwin. The festival is celebrated for nine nights once every year during the beginning of October, although as the dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar, the festival may be held for a day more or a day less. Nine forms of Shakti are worshipped during the Navaratris. Navaratri is celebrated in different ways throughout India. In North India, all three Navaratris are celebrated with much fervor by fasting on all nine days and worshiping the Mother Goddess in her different forms. The Chaitra Navaratri culminates in Ram Navami and the Sharad Navaratri culminates in Durga Puja and Dussehra. The Dussehra of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh is particularly famous in the North. Navaratri festival in Gujarat is one of the main festivals. Garba is a dance which people perform on all nine nights, after the Durga Pooja, in groups accompanied by live orchestra or devotional songs. The last four days of Sharad Navaratri take on a particularly dramatic form in the state of West Bengal in eastern India where they are celebrated as Durga Puja. This is the biggest festival of the year in this state. Exquisitely crafted and decorated life-size clay idols of the Goddess Durga depicting her slaying the demon Mahishasura are set up in temples and other places. These idols are then worshiped for five days and immersed in the river on the fifth day. In the Punjab, Navaratri is known as Navratras or Naratey where the first seven days are for fasting. On the eighth day or Ashtami, devotees break their fasts by calling young girls home and these girls are treated as the goddess herself. They are called "Kanjak Devis". People ceremonially wash their feet, worship them and then offer food to the "girl-goddesses" giving them the traditional puri, halwa and chana to eat along with bangles and the red chunnis (scarves) to wear with a token amount of money as "shagun". The ninth day is then called Navami which means
literally the ninth day of this holy and pious period. Some families also celebrate Kaali pujan on days 1 and 2, Laxmi pujan on days 3, 4, 5 and Saraswati pujan on days 6, 7, 8, 9 along with Ghatasthapana. On the eighth day, a "Yajna" or "Hom" is performed in the name of Goddess Durga. On ninth day, the Ghat pujan is done and the Ghat is dissolved after taking off the sprouted leaves of the grains. In many families, a woman from Matang community is called and offered food and blessings are sought from her. She is considered as a form of the Goddess "Matangi". On the occasion of Dasara or Vijayadashmi, the men go to the forest or farm and bring the leaves of the tree Apta. They worship iron in the form of utensils, weapons, etc. The iron equipments are washed and offered leaves of Apta called gold or "sona" and also leaves of the grains which were sprouted. On this day, a process called Vidyarambhan meaning beginning of learning takes place when small children are to write first alphabet. In the evening of "Vijayadasami", any one doll from the "Kolu" is symbolically put to sleep and the Kalasa is moved a bit towards North to mark the end of that year's Navaratri Kolu. Prayers are offered to thank God for the successful completion of that year's Kolu and with a hope of a successful one the next year. Then the Kolu is dismantled and packed up for the next year. In temples of Tamil Nadu, navaratri is celebrated for the Devi's dwelling in each temples, The utsava murthy is decorated and vedic offerings are performed, Following by Chandi homa. Popular Tamil Nadu temples celebrating navaratri are Madurai madurai meenakshi temple, Chennai kapaleeswarar temple, Kulasekarapattinam devi temple, Perambur Ellaiamman temple, Srirangam Ranganathan temple. In Karnataka, Ayudha Puja, the ninth day of Mysore Dasara, is celebrated with the worship of implements used in daily life such as computers, books, vehicles, or kitchen tools. The effort to see the divine in the tools and objects one uses in daily life is central to this celebration, so it includes all tools that help one earn one's livelihood. Knowledge workers go for books, pen or computers, farmers go for the plough and other agricultural tools, machinery for industrialists and cars/buses/trucks for the transportation workers—all are decorated with flowers and worshiped on this day invoking God's blessing for success in coming years. It is believed that any new venture such as starting of business or purchasing of new house-
hold items on this day is bound to bring success and prosperity. The Dasara festivities culminate on the night of Vijayadashami with a torchlight parade, known locally as Panjina Kavayatthu. In Kerala and in some parts of Karnataka three days: Ashtami, Navami, and Vijaya Dashami of Sharad Navarathri are celebrated as Sarasvati Puja in which books are worshiped. The books are placed for Puja on the Ashtami day in own houses, traditional nursery schools, or in temples. On Vijaya Dashami day, the books are ceremoniously taken out for reading and writing after worshiping Sarasvati. Vijaya Dashami day is considered auspicious for initiating the children into writing and reading, which is called Vidyarambham. Tens of thousands of children are initiated into the world of letters on this day in Kerala. In Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, people celebrate Bathukamma festival over a period of nine days. It is a kind of navaratri celebration. Here Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore three different aspects of the supreme goddess or goddesses. The goddess is separated a spiritual force called Durga also known as Kali in order to destroy all our evil and grant boons. The Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees inexhaustible wealth, as she is the goddess of wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshiping the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In some parts of South India, Saraswati puja is performed on the 9th day. Ayudha Puja is conducted in many parts of South India on the
Mahanavami (Ninth) day with much fanfare. Weapons, agricultural implements, all kinds of tools, equipments, machinery and automobiles are decorated and worshipped on this day along with the worship of Goddess. The work starts afresh from the next day, i.e. the 10th day which is celebrated as 'Vijaya Dashami'. Many teachers/Schools in south India start teaching Kindergarten children from that day onwards. Devotees avoid meat, alcoholic drinks, grains, wheat and onion during this fast. Grains are usually avoided since it is believed that during the period of Navaratri and seasonal change, grains attract and absorb lots of negative energies from the surrounding and therefore there is a need to avoid eating anything which are produced from grains for the purification of Navaratri to be successful. During this vowed religious observance, a pot is installed (Ghatasthapana) at a sanctified place at home. A lamp is kept lit in the pot for nine days. The pot symbolises the universe. The uninterrupted lit lamp is the medium through which we worship the effulgent Adishakti, i.e. Sree Durgadevi. During Navaratri, the principle of Sree Durgadevi is more active in the atmosphere. Navaratri is celebrated in a large number of Indian communities. The mother goddess is said to appear in 9 forms, and each one is worshiped for a day. These nine forms signify various traits that the goddess influences us with. The Devi Mahatmya and other texts invoking the Goddess who vanquished demons are cited.

Animal Fact - Queen Angelfish
The queen angelfish gets its name from the crown-like ring on its head. Its diet consists mostly of sponges and algae. Queen angelfish get their royal title from the speckled, blue-ringed black spot on their heads that resembles a crown. Decked out with electric blue bodies, blazing yellow tails, and light purple and orange highlights, Queen angels are among the most strikingly colorful of all reef fishes. Their adornments seem shockingly conspicuous, but they blend well when hiding amid the exotic reef colors. They are shy fish, found either alone or often in pairs in the warm waters of the Caribbean and western Atlantic. Fairly large for reef-dwellers, they can grow up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) in length. They have rounded heads and small beak-like mouths, and, like other angelfish, their long upper and lower fins stream dramatically behind them. Their diet consists almost entirely of sponges and algae, but they will also nibble on sea fans, soft corals, and even jellyfish. Queen angels are close relatives of the equally striking blue angelfish. In fact, these two species are known to mate, forming natural hybrids, a very rare occurrence among angelfish. They are widely harvested for the aquarium trade, but are common throughout their range and have no special protections or status.

gestures a person is making by using two distinct sensors: one that responds to the motion of the wrist and the other to the muscular movements in the arm. A program then wirelessly receives this information and converts the data into the English translation. The researchers plan to reduce the training time of the device, or even eliminate it altogether, so that the wearable device responds automatically to the user. Jafari also wants to improve the effectiveness of the system's sensors so that the device will be more useful in real-life conversations. Currently, when a person gestures in sign language, the device can only read words one at a time. This, however, is not how people speak. "When we're speaking, we put all the words in one sentence," Jafari said. "The transition from one word to another word is seamless and it's actually immediate." "We need to build signal-processing techniques that would help us to identify and understand a complete sentence," he added. Jafari's ultimate vision is to use new technology, such as the wearable sensor, to develop innovative user interfaces between humans and computers.

Although vitiligo affects all races equally, it is more noticeable in dark-skinned people. Vitiligo affects up to 2% of the population, and it is estimated that two to five million Americans have the condition. In most cases, vitiligo develops early in life, between the ages of 10 and 30 years. Ninety-five percent of those affected will develop the disorder before age 40. Both men and women are equally likely to

Vitiligo and Loss of Skin Color
itiligo is a condition in which white patches develop on the skin. Any location on the body can be affected and most people with vitiligo have white patches on many areas of the body. Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin its characteristic color. Vitiligo is caused by a loss of pigment in the skin, due to destruction of pigment-forming cells known as melanocytes. The exact cause of the destruction of these cells is not

develop vitiligo. Vitiligo may run in families; those with a family history of vitiligo or premature graying of the hair are at increased risk for the development of vitiligo. Other risk factors that increase one's chances of developing vitiligo include having autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmunethyroid disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis). Symptoms of vitiligo include an often rapid pigment loss on several areas of the skin. The initial appearance of the white patches can be followed by a stable period without any progression of the condition. Later on, further cycles of pigment loss and stability may be observed. Vitiligo commonly
affects areas on the skin that are exposed to sun, body folds (such as armpits), previous sites of injury, areas around moles, or areas around body openings. It is rare for pigment to return once the white patches have developed. Vitiligo can also affect the eyelids and hair. There is no known way to prevent or cure vitiligo. Vitiligo is a disease in which the pigment cells of the skin, melanocytes, are destroyed in certain areas. Vitiligo results in depigmented, or white, patches of skin in any location on the body. The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, although most experts believe that it is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys certain cells within the body. Most people who have vitiligo will develop the condition prior to age 40; about half develop it before age 20. Vitiligo tends to run in families. Vitiligo is not painful and does not have significant health consequences; however, it can have emotional and psychological consequences.
Construction Debris Strewn
I
t is a proud moment for any individual to construct his own house to what would be termed as a ‘Home’, when the family starts to reside there. There are proud owners who have adhered to the norms of the space to be used up other than inside the site of construction which is allowed as per the rules. There are also a few who would bother to consider the hassles it would cause by violating it. The construction materials and the debris mounting out of the construction should be kept in a manner which does not inconvenience anyone. This particular site at 15th cross in sector 1 seems to be using almost half of the road and in addition dumping the materials o the opposite side of the site of construction. This is not what is expected from the contractors who are responsible for the mess. But, the owner is always blamed. The owner might not even be in station when the contractors resort to such lackadaisical attitudes. The owners will have to strictly tell the contractors not to use the road. The materials overflow on to the road occupying the stretch almost. The engineers of the civic agencies will have to ensure such things do not happen or recur.
