Your data could have been stolen from an Aadhaar-linking site Data breach at Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation exposes millions of Indians
A
data breach at the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), a retirement fund for salaried workers, may have exposed the personal information of millions of Indians.
On May 01, a letter from the central provident fund commissioner, V P Joy, to Dinesh Tyagi, the CEO of the government’s Common Services Centre (CSC), which provides digital services, was leaked on Twitter. Dated March 23, the letter said that the Intelligence Bureau had found that data had been “stolen by hackers exploiting the vulnerabilities prevailing in the website (aadhaar.epfoservices.com) of the EPFO.” On the website, hosted at the National Data Centre but managed by the CSC, individuals could link their provident funds with Aadhaar, India’s biometric i d e nt it y pro g r a m m e . Wh i l e n o t mand ator y, t he EPFO had b e en encouraging subscribers to link their accounts with Aadhaar to improve the delivery of services.
Joy reportedly stated in the letter that the EPFO had stopped the servers of the site and discontinued its hosted services, and urged Tyagi to plug the security gaps. The we b s ite m ai nt ai n e d c on f i d e nt i a l information such as Aadhaar and PAN numbers (taxpayer identification codes), as well as salary details. It’s not clear how many Indians may have been affected but the EPFO has reportedly linked 34.5 million active provident fund accounts with Aadhaar. No one has claimed responsibility for the hack as yet. The Unique Identification Authority of India, which is responsible for the Aadhaar platform, has clarified that the affected website does not belong to it, and that no data breach has occured at its end. On May 02, the EPFO released a statement saying “no confirmed data leakage has been established or observed so far.” A senior official told the media that the data was completely secure and there was no need to panic.

Metro pillars to support road bridge towards Silkboard Two residents give their point and counterpoint in favour and against the proposed flyover reasoning or quantitative data, who couldn't do anything about the shifting of the cantonment station, but now want to ruin the happiness of the citizens who are waiting for the project to start and finish as soon as possible.. and go back to how this stretch was before the whole Silk Board mess started, or before the boom.
OPPOSED TO THE FLYOVER Srinidhi Sampath Anyone travelling on Marenahalli road towards Silkboard will surely feel great relief reading the plan being proposed by BMRCL, that is using the metro pillars to support a road bridge, which will let commuters literally ‘fly’ over the most congested roads in the whole of Bangalore and even crossing the dreaded Silkboard junction seamlessly. I was also one of those denizens who said ‘shabash’ when I first heard it. Then thinking a little further about it, we get to the first question of what happens after we fly over the Silkboard junction... we will either get stuck at Bommanahalli junction on Hosur road or a little further on ORR at 5th main rd junction of HSR layout. So a flyover will ALWAYS shift the congestion and never SOLVE it completely. And all this trouble coming at a very heavy price of expensive bridge which will uproot a lot of trees as well as homes and establishments of many! So what is the solution? We are totally missing the elephant in the room..the Metro itself! On Marenahalli road, there are three major interchanges coming up: Green Line-Yellow line (RV road), Yellow Line – red line (Jayadeva), Yellow line – Blue Line (Silkboard)
The major traffic on Marenahalli and at silkboard today are daily commuters moving to and from EC and ORR/ITPL section. The Yellow Line (RV rd - EC) and Blue Line (Silkboard – KR puram) will give instant relief to all of them. The roads below the flyovers will instantly be abandoned and emptied once these metro lines open. So there is absolutely no reason for another road bridge there at all. Instead, we can plan for a BPS or bus priority lanes which can cater to the bus services as metro feeders as well as longer routes. This will make south Bangalore more liveable compared to the madness of what it is today. This will save a lot of money and also parks. Tall trees can be pruned and spared of cutting as done on RV road for Ph
I. More than anything this will be best gift we owe to our children, a livable city with better air to breathe instead of one clogged with polluting motor vehicles.
IN FAVOUR OF THE FLYOVER Navin Pais We need a seamless Outer Ring Road. It should be like a freeway, not like a clogged city road that it has become... and for that, such flyovers are the need of the hour... there were similar reservations about the western and eastern expressway in Bombay. Now everyone uses it, even the naysayers. There are bottlenecks once you get off at the ends, on the link roads, but hardly any at the other exits on the highway. And it cuts one's travel time like anything. Just think of the fuel
Spraying of disinfectants to avoid the breeding of mosquitoes in HSR drains
and pollution that is saved. This flyover will be similar... you think BMRCL is foolish to spend so much of money without actually studying the problem and the feasibility of the same? And here, the people travelling on the stretch in question, stuck for hours in mindless traffic don't even live in BTM Layout, HSR or all the way from Ragigudda. You cannot have such amount of traffic pass through residential areas, why should the residents breathe toxins just because you do not like flyovers? This elevated road will certainly help the residents immensely... I for one am glad BMRCL is going ahead with it instead of listening to self proclaimed experts on urban planning who have no qualitative d at a b u t o n l y s u b j e c t i v e
What surprises me, instead of removing bottlenecks on the ORR by adding flyovers, many of you all are insisting on something that's never going to work... BMTC is not BEST, last mile connectivity is shit!! You cannot force people to use the bus. Have you all seen how crowded the buses already are? Add the private vehicle population to it, it is surely going to collapse.... the first phase of the m e t ro h a s brou g ht d ow n vehicular traffic in and around the tracks by quite a bit... anyone who travels in and around the CBD will vouch for the same... but some in this group were upset with the Silk Board-KR Puram line as well... this whole dogmatic minds e t of b e ing against anything concrete or flyovers should go... if the city planners had listened to the naysayers, then many of us would reach home only the next day... flyovers might look ugly, but most of them do the job... you cannot expect perfection when we have roads of all shapes and sizes... you gotta do the best you can, and go forward, not backward.

Runners Manifesto
A
demand from the runners in Bengaluru to the contestants in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Elections 2018. This is what they have to say.
Our Vision General physical and mental well being of citizens Green lung space Reduction in pollution Safe space for commute by walking/cycling Urban commons for community engagement Better standards of liveability. With the right infrastructure for runners, multiple objectives are achieved for the city. The city of runners Bengaluru is not only known as the Silicon Valley of India but is also the running capital of the country. Year long salubrious climate and convergence of various expats has brought the
love of long distance running to the cubicle dwellers in the city and has been a great uniter. The oldest running group in the city is Bangalore Hash House Harriers, with about 20+ years of legacy where friends got together and ran the trails at the outskirts of the city. Now, the city is home to countless running groups which run 5km races to marathons to ultra marathons. Some of the country’s top amateur runners are from Bangalore. The city is also home to Ironman athletes and thousands others interested in various other sports such as cycling, swimming and athletics. Running is the easiest sport to pick up. Anybody can run and attain good health and a fresh start to their day. But in a growing city like Bengaluru, where concrete is taking precedence over the green, we need to actively plan to preserve and encourage running infrastructure, for the future generations. Lot of green space has been lost in the last 15 years (Appendix1) and must be
recovered and preserved The Charter This charter is by Bangalore runners, a group representing nearly 20,000 runners residing in Bengaluru. This is a charter of demands for our ward MLA. Roads and avenues Tree shaded avenues – Trees of local species to be mandatorily planted along every major road. Space for trees to be accounted for in the design and added to the standard template in the traffic/road design. Walkable/cyclable footpaths – Make Bengaluru the city that chooses to walk by making footpaths safe. Earmark wide footpath space as per international standards, portion of which is should be cycle friendly. Lakes and Parks Lakes – Earmark funds to develop and maintain water bodies in the ward in pristine condition. The lakes and the parks around the
water body can serve as lung spaces to the increasingly concrete city and a haven for runners, besides being biodiversity hotspots. Park connector – Lakes in Bangalore are connected through Rajakaluves. Plan for exclusive Running/Cycling trail connecting parks and lakes along Rajakaluves. Rajakaluves are primary drains connecting the lakes. All rajakaluves have a stipulated buffer of 50m on either side (as per NGT April 2016 guidelines). This buffer zone can be converted to reserved green area with lush forest with a natural running / walking trail that can connect all the lakes in the specific chain. This also eases the traffic in the city by encouraging people to walk/cycle to their destination. Push for the Rejuvenation of Bellandur and Varthur lakes and divert funds for similar infrastructure in their buffer zones.
Large parks such as Cubbon park to be made free of vehicular traffic 24×7. Access only to walkers, runners and cyclists. Personal safety of visitors at these parks and lake trails. Sports specific infrastructure Funds to Build stadiums, playgrounds and training centres such as Kanteerava stadium in each ward, for better accessibility of budding talented sportsmen and sportswomen to training facilities instead of driving to the very few limited options at present. Existing stadia, playgrounds in colleges and government schools can be upgraded with synthetic tracks and good toilet and other facilities. Hold Local athletic events every quarter/year to encourage local talent. Plan Drinking water, first aid and toilet infrastructure throughout the running cycling routes.
