EARLY VOICES: PEG FRIDAY

Throughout 2021, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Garden Spot Village, we will include the insight and memories of some of the Early Voices who knew the Weaver Family or were involved in the beginnings of Garden Spot Village. Written by Juanita Fox, Storyteller

Peg and Dan Friday’s journey to Garden Spot Village started at the Groves Campground in Fort Myers, Florida. Each winter, Dan and Peg spent three months at the campground, escaping Pennsylvania’s harsh winters. They quickly made friends with other Pennsylvania campers, including Marjorie and Howard Milbourne and Verling and Thelma Etter. Eventually, George and Jane Downes became part of this group. When the friends returned to Pennsylvania, they met monthly for lunch or dinner. In the summer of 1996, at one of their monthly gatherings, Howard laid out his vision for the next step in retirement: Garden Spot Village. The other couples were intrigued, but noncommittal that afternoon. Shortly after that luncheon, Dan and Peg found themselves in Lancaster County. They casually drove by Garden Spot Village. They liked what they saw and put their name on the waiting list. They hoped to move in 3 to 5 years. When they received a call in the winter of 1997 saying that in spring 1998, a home would be available to them, they were a little uncertain. Because Marjorie and Howard seemed settled and happy in their new community, Dan and Peg decided to move, too. Dan and Peg packed up and sold their home in Yardley, moved everything to storage in New Holland and headed off to Florida just after Christmas in 1997. On April 1, 1998 they moved into their home in Primrose Court. Peg remembers, “It was wonderful to move to Garden Spot Village. I called Marjorie the day after we moved in to say, ‘I’m so happy. It’s been a wonderful journey to live here.’” Over the years Dan and Peg connected with their neighbors and built deep friendships. Peg says, “Our court is a very friendly group of people. In the early years we would walk, as a group, each evening from our cottage all the way down to the apartments. We enjoyed walking and talking.” Most winters, the majority of their neighbors in Primrose Court would head to Florida for several weeks. Peg began to organize luncheons in Florida with Garden Spot Village friends (from Primrose and beyond!). One year, 48 Garden Spot residents gathered for lunch in North Port, Florida. “It was so much fun to see each other because we had become friends,” Peg reminisces. Peg enjoyed volunteering with Share & Care, helping with the Best Kept Secrets Tour and playing Mahjong. She enjoyed helping with the Garden Spot Village Marathon, singing with Village Voices and taking day trips with Life Enrichment. For many years, she helped with the annual picnic at Overly’s Grove and coordinated the Christmas House Tour at Garden Spot Village. She also remembers helping with the Open House for Village Square. Bonnie Gehrig, the marketing director at the time, asked if she would help to arrange flowers for the event. Peg, Bea Neely and Joyce Urbine headed to Flower and Craft Warehouse to purchase flowers and vases for 35 arrangements. “I was so pleased and so proud to be part of that project. It was an honor to decorate the building and help it look beautiful.” “It’s been fun to watch Garden Spot Village grow. The changes over the years have been really wonderful. They made it a home for all of us,” Peg says.

TRADITIONAL FALL FESTIVAL IS BACK SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9 The Fall Festival committee is pleased to share that the traditional Fall Festival will return Saturday, October 9. You will have the opportunity to bid on items in the silent auction, shop at the country store and craft tables, and enjoy delicious food. Children will have fun at the children’s activity area. The Apple Pie contest is always popular and will take place again this year. As in past years, we will be having days to collect items for the silent auction and the country store. The first collection day is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17 and the second date is Thursday, September 2. Both days will be from 9-11a.m. The committee is asking for the following items to be donated on collection days for the silent auction: 1. Handcrafted items 2. Artwork 3. Gift Baskets (This is a great opportunity for individuals and neighborhoods to create baskets) We are also looking for one-of-a-kind opportunities for the silent auction. Could you teach a special craft, demonstrate how to bake bread, offer a fishing experience or other activities that highest bidders could win? For the Country Store, we are looking for new items. You might have something that you will never use that you could donate. More information about Fall Festival will soon be available. Meanwhile, please put this date on your calendar and invite your family and friends.

MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

I N T EREST ED I N D OWNSIZI NG? Garden Spot Village residents have the opportunity to move within the community. Often people will choose to move from a cottage or carriage home to an apartment. If this is something you are considering, we invite people to plan for the move. You will be better set up for success when you plan! What’s involved? You can join the Radar Screen for the new home of your choice for a $500 transfer fee. As long as you are downsizing (moving from a larger space to a smaller space), you may not need to pay an additional entrance fee. Be sure to ask, though, so you have the information you need. Renovations for your new home are based upon the 13-year refurbishment schedule in the Resident Handbook. The closer you get to the 13-year refurbishment, the more GSV will cover the cost to renovate your new home. If you have met the 13-year mark and forgo the refurbishment of your current home, GSV will refurbish your new home at no cost to you and cover moving expenses. If the apartment is in good shape, you can choose to not have a complete refurbishment done to save cost. Please note: Residents are given priority access for Radar Screen, but wait time can vary depending upon your preferences. Kelly Sweigart, sales associate says, “A common mistake I see is that people come to me in October hoping they can move before the end of the year. It takes 60 days to renovate the apartment so that must be factored into the timing.”

“JUST” THINKING...

Racial Equality – Identities: In addition to being created in God’s image, it may be helpful in discussing racial justice for African Americans to be reminded that every person has identities beyond his or her race. For example, the road toward racial equality may be different for African American women than for men, for dark skinned than for light skinned, for those living in poverty than for those who are not. How, would you speculate, that these and other identities you might name affect an African American seeking employment, a promotion, a loan, purchase of a house or rental of an apartment, admission to college? While the road toward racial equality has an incline for most or all African Americans, is the steepness of that incline for given individuals affected by their combination of identities? Just thinking...

VILLAGE GREETERS

Written by Juanita Fox, Storyteller Moving to a new community can feel overwhelming. New people, new neighbors, new experiences, new everything! In the midst of it all, a new friend who can show you around and offer you tips is invaluable! Recognizing the value of relationships, the Marketing Department and Volunteer Services partner to provide Village Greeters for every new resident who moves to Garden Spot Village. Residents volunteer to welcome their new neighbors with a phone call, a personal tour and an invitation to share a meal. While the initial connections between Village Greeters and new residents may be planned, the friendships that develop are not. In December 2019, when Dee and Cal Homan moved into their apartment in VSA, Fred and Lois Brownlee were assigned to be their Village Greeters. On moving day, Fred and Lois stopped in with freshly baked cookies, and a new friendship developed. “We didn’t know anyone when we moved in,” remembers Dee. Fred and Lois quickly stepped up to the plate. Fred had previously worked as a Garden Spot Village At Home Driver, so he knew a lot of people, and began to introduce Dee and Cal as new neighbors. “Shortly after we moved in, Lois and Fred hosted a Holiday Open House, which gave us a great opportunity to meet all of our neighbors in one evening,” recalls Dee. Fred and Lois also invited Dee and Cal to join them for drives through Lancaster County, which often included lunch and an ice cream stop. When Fred experienced a stroke and could no longer drive, Dee and Cal began to take Fred and Lois for drives. “On Memorial Day, Fred and Lois’s daughter invited us to join their family for a picnic, so we drove Fred and Lois to their daughter’s home and enjoyed a visit with their family.” “On Saturday we went for a drive. We stopped for soft pretzels and then for ice cream,” Dee says with a smile. “We are very good friends. We pass food back and forth and I always knock on the door to see if Fred and Lois want to join us for dinner.” A simple knock on a new neighbor’s door turned into a lasting, life-giving friendship.
