HEBREW CLASS FOR BEGINNERS

GSV resident Lorraine Evans is offering a class for interested persons who would like to learn the rudiments of the Hebrew language. The requirements for participating in this class are a recent translation of the Bible and a curious mind! The class will meet during the summer months with the schedule determined by the participants and Lorraine. Feel free to contact Lorraine or Chaplains Chet or Karyn for more information. JOIN US ON A SUMMER READING ADVENTURE

Travel from the South to cities of the North and West as we follow three individuals on the journey of a lifetime, from 1910-1970, the years of the Great Migration. Discover the ways that they not only survived, but thrived, despite the many obstacles facing people of color in those days. The Warmth of Other Suns author, Isabelle Wilkerson, narrates their stories with resolute accuracy. We invite you to enjoy this either as a personal reading experience or in a small group. Sign up at Resident Services to purchase a copy of The Warmth of Other Suns. Cost: $10 per book. Please indicate at sign-up if you would like to join a small group. Or, please indicate if you have a group with room for one or two more. Our hope is that many will want to share reading experiences with others in a larger gathering after the summer months. It is also our hope that this will be the first of many reading adventures that Garden Spot Village embarks on together!

MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS New York Times best-selling author and social worker, Brene Brown, in her recent book Atlas of the Heart, encourages all of us to find meaningful ways to interact with others. I love her definition of what a healthy connection looks and feels like. “Connection is the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” (Atlas of the Heart, c 2021 p 170) The last two years have taken a toll on many of our relationships. Personally, I’m finding that it takes concerted and determined effort to reconnect with friends and family. Why not take a step today by picking up the phone and calling someone you haven’t spoken to for a while? Sherilyn Lapp Director of Social Services

VO LU N T E E R S E RV I C E S

Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH DINING SERVICES “Volunteering really does help you live with purpose,” Carol Totten says. She and her husband Bob moved to their cottage in Bluebell Court, in August 2020. They quickly became involved at Garden Spot Village, finding many opportunities to live with purpose in their new community. On Mondays, from 11am-1:30pm, Carol volunteers in the Terrace Dining Room. She welcomes the residents and guests, seats them at their table, pours water and asks if they would like coffee. When guests leave, she clears and resets the tables. Between customers she helps fold linen napkins. “It’s simple, but what I do is important because it allows the waitresses to concentrate on the diners,” Carol says. “It’s always makes my day when someone tells me I have lots of energy—but at the end of my shift, I’m tired!” she adds with a laugh.

Volunteering in the Terrace Dining Room has allowed her to connect with her neighbors in a new way. She’s learned so much about many new people. She knows the Monday regulars—who wants coffee, who sits where and what they enjoy. In addition to her regular assignment in Dining Services, Carol, along with Bob, serves on the Race Day Planning Team. Carol enjoys that assignment because it allows her to connect with a number of people at Garden Spot Village and, it’s a concentrated project-based assignment. As the volunteer coordinators, Carol and Bob recruit volunteers for Race Weekend. In 2022, they made an extra effort to reach new residents for help. She met even more people in her community, as they recruited nearly 140 resident volunteers. The couple also occasionally helps with the monthly Community Meal at CrossNet Ministries. As their schedule allows, Carol and Bob serve as trip escorts for Life Enrichment.

Additional volunteer opportunities with Dining Services include helping to clean and prep fresh fruit and vegetables through the spring and summer and helping diners with trays at The Harvest Table. If you are interested in volunteering in one of these roles, contact Volunteer Services at 717.355.6204.

Biking is one of the healthier exercises as it’s low impact (if you don’t fall) and cardiovascular. Biking also is an excellent way to run errands and get to and from work, and is an affordable, alternative means of transportation. Whether you like to bicycle alone or even in tandem, give it a whirl! If you do not have a bike, many vacation cities offer bike rentals. Use #NationalBikeMonth to share on social media.

Bocce is played with eight large balls and one smaller target or object ball called a pallina. There are four balls per team and they are made of a different color or pattern in order to distinguish the balls from those of the other team. The game is played with two teams, with each team having one, two, or four players. For four player teams, each player throws one ball. For two player teams, each player throws two balls. For one player teams, each player throws four balls. When there are multiple players on a team, a playing rotation is determined at the start of a game and is maintained throughout the entire game.
