VO LU N T E E R S E RV I C E S

Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services

GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE BEEKEEPERS A team of ten resident beekeepers cares for the three beehives located next to the aeroponic greenhouse. Sandy Allen, Garden Spot Village resident since August 2015, leads the group. She enjoys the opportunity to work with fellow residents in caring for the bees. Although participation in the club isn’t a volunteer opportunity per se, serving as a leader in the group is! Recently, the group received a generous donation from one of their members. They used the donation to purchase a small shed for their tools. They look forward to having water and electric in the shed, which will allow them to do the extracting on-site rather than in someone’s garage. Unfortunately, the bees from summer 2021 did not make it through the winter. As a result, the beekeepers purchased three nucleus colonies (nucs) which include a queen, some worker bees, a brood and honey (for the bees’ food). They installed the nucs in mid-May and Sandy checked them in early June. Sandy says, “The bees are doing splendidly. They have propagated and are bringing in pollen to make honey. The queen is laying her eggs. We’ll just keep an eye on them this season to make sure they thrive. It’s unlikely that the bees will produce enough honey to harvest this summer. They are going to need all of their honey as food and fuel through the winter. Hopefully in fall 2023, we will have honey again.” When the bees produce a surplus of honey, the beekeepers receive a portion of the harvest. When the harvest allows, honey is also offered for sale in Linden, so that the rest of the community can enjoy it! As always, a portion of sales at Linden benefits the Benevolent Fund. Sandy encourages more residents to join the group saying, “You don’t need to be experienced to join us. You simply need to be interested in learning more about beekeeping. I didn’t know anything about bees when I moved to Garden Spot Village and now I’m in the middle of it all!” Sandy shares that time commitment to the group is minimal; the group meets quarterly and assesses $25 dues each year. Members of the club are invited to help tend the bees during the spring and summer, as well as to harvest and extract the honey. To learn more, contact Sandy Allen at 717.799.0624.

Airing of the Quilts Saturday, July 23 9am-3pm, Garden Spot Village

An event where everyone can participate! Inspired by the pioneer tradition of airing quilts by hanging them on bushes and trees, the Garden Spot Village Quilters will host “Airing of the Quilts.” On Saturday, July 23, display all of the quilts that you own outside your home. Use magnets to attach quilted pieces to your garage door. String clothesline between trees for hanging quilts. Drape quilts over your balcony, porch railings, shrubs, benches and rocks. From 9am - 3pm, walk or cruise Garden Spot Village and Sycamore Springs to view the display of quilts. Visit the special exhibit of quilts made with Ruby Short McKim patterns in the Legacy Garden. Purchase a quilt at the GSV Quilters’ pop-up sale in the Pavilion. Food trucks will add to the festivities. Invite your friends and family to join you for this fun event. Rain date: July 30.

WELLNESS

SUPPORT THAT MAKES A GOLD MEDAL POSSIBLE In June 2021, Charlie Istak moved to Garden Spot Village. He searched for a Christ-honoring environment where he and his wife could retire in community. Once settled in his new home, Charlie looked to make connections and stay active. The first stops were a prayer meeting and then the Wellness Center. Charlie was delighted to see all of the available state-of-the-art equipment. He spoke with the entire team in Wellness: Andrea, Greg, Joanne, and Lauren. They were all enthusiastic about lending a helping hand and suggested coaching tips to stay active. Joanne worked closest with Charlie and discovered that he was a three-time medalist at the Senior Games before moving to Garden Spot Village. The Senior Games is a competitive sports competition for adults over 50 years of age. Charlie persisted in training for the Senior Games in the softball throw, football throw, javelin throw, and running competitions. He was delighted by how accommodating and kindhearted Joanne was as she assisted him in preparation for the gold. When the first week of May 2022 arrived, Charlie was honored to represent Garden Spot Village at the Lancaster County Senior Games. He had nine months of training and a cross with Jesus’ name written on his shoe—aiming for the gold. “Far be it from me; for those who honor Me I will honor.” (1 Samuel 2:30 NKJV) This was the thought at the forefront of Charlie’s mind while participating. Charlie won the gold in Softball Throw and Football Throw with God’s grace. But unfortunately, the weather was unfavorable for the Javelin Throw and Running Events, which canceled those competitions.
