JULY FOCUS Customer Service Relates to Everyone

From New Holland to Las Vegas to Krispy Kreme Donuts in Texas, join Chris Straka on a walk through the ins and outs of customer service.

Garden Spot Village Resident Life presents Chris Straka, who will present how “Customer Service Relates to Everyone” on Thursday, July 13 at 10am in the Chapel. Chris will share from his personal experience with customer service as a small business owner, sales manager, learning and development manager and global sales consultant with well-known Lancaster and Lebanon county businesses. He will also share recent research surrounding the role of customer service.

His presentation will be interactive and engaging. He will draw on his training as a music teacher and performer to engage his audience during the interactive presentation.

Jodi Lefever, director of volunteer services says, “Chris is going to focus on how customer service affects all aspects of our lives. He will share ways that we can be good customers, as well as how we can serve our customers well.”

The event is open to all residents, as well as the local community. The presentation is appropriate for everyone, as we can all learn how to be better customers and serve those around us.

Chris currently serves as the director of development with For One Life, a New Holland-based nonprofit organization that was founded to help businesses, schools, churches, youth groups and individuals to partner financially with building projects in India and around the world, with a primary focus on schools and children’s homes.

COMMUNITY CORNER

AARON’S ACRES:

Garden Spot Village is partnering with Aaron’s Acres, a Lancaster-based organization that serves individuals with disabilities. For ages 5-21, they offer year-round age-appropriate therapeutic recreational programs. They also offer spring and fall sports leagues for young adults, ages 21-40. Specially trained staff provide a supportive environment that enhances communication skills. During the school year they offer social opportunities monthly, on Friday and Saturday evenings. Mid-June through early-August, they offer day camps for children 5-21. In addition, the organization offers emotional, educational, and recreational support for the entire family. The 2023 Aaron’s Acres summer camp will be hosted at New Holland Park. The summer-long program offers half day and full day camp, with a mix of activities, entertainment and service projects. Last summer, Aaron’s Acres teens blessed Garden Spot Village residents with a carwash. They also enjoyed playing Bingo with residents in healthcare. This year’s campers also plan to serve at Garden Spot Village. Look for opportunities to interact with them this summer. See page 7 for details.

GRETNA THEATER:

Recognized as America’s oldest summer theater, Gretna Theatre was established in 1927 in beautiful Mount Gretna. Gretna Theatre’s mission is to grow community by producing and presenting live professional theatre that engages, transforms, and educates. For thirteen weeks each summer, Gretna Theater offers professional theatre productions, including Broadway musicals, shows from the Great American Songbook, classic plays, and children’s theatre. The original Mount Gretna Playhouse dates to 1892. It was built as the centerpiece of the newly-created Pennsylvania Chautauqua. As scheduled events for the Chautauqua waned in the 1920s, the Chautauqua Board of Managers contacted A. E. Scott, an actor and director from the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, and suggested that he start a summer theater in Gretna. In the spring of 1927, renovations created a stage and dressing rooms. The first season of theater at Mount Gretna Playhouse opened in mid-June. In the winter of 1994, the roof collapsed under an estimated 150 tons of snow. Over the next year, the playhouse was rebuilt and shows started once again. Many Broadway stars have performed at Gretna Theatre –including Bernadette Peters, Charlton Heston, Faith Prince, Laurie Beechman and Sally Struthers. Garden Spot Village is honored to support Gretna Theatre this year as a Premiere Sponsor for the 2023 Summer Season. As a result of this sponsorship, tickets are available for Gypsy. Sign up Today!

STORY SHACK INVITATION!

It’s so good to have these long summer days to be out and about, but if you can’t, it’s also good to have more daylight for great reading! Our Story Shacks this season promise you that. They are all about North America. Have you ever really noticed, no matter how near or far we travel, we cannot escape reminders that we live on land once held sacred by Native Americans? Out of 50 states, 25 are named from Indigenous languages, not to mention all the counties! A road trip in Pennsylvania takes one across countless rivers, streams and parks named by/for Indigenous peoples. Facts are fun for the history buff, but you might prefer a memoir, novel, poetry, or even a coffee table picture book. Story Shacks 2023 have all that and more…including a few children’s selections. All have been lovingly selected for us to get to know and understand more about our Indigenous ancestors and their descendants.

We hope you will be reading at home, on a bench, or in a gazebo, enjoying what will be available through September.

EVERY DAY IS A FRESH OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE WITH GRATITUDE AND PURPOSE

These inspirational quotes changed my perspective today; perhaps you will find them meaningful as well.

“Gratitude is a powerful catalyst for happiness. It’s the spark that lights a fire of joy in your soul.”

– Amy

“Gratitude is the ability to experience life as a gift. It liberates us from the prison of self-preoccupation.”

– John

“Gratitude is magical, it can convert whatever we have into enough.”

– nicjain.com

“When we focus on our gratitude, the tide of disappointment goes out and the tide of love rushes in”

“I love the big fresh starts, the clean slates like birthdays and new years, but I also really like the idea that we can get up every morning and start over.”

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

AUDIO-VISUAL TECH SUPPORT

Volunteer audio-visual techs run the sound for events in the Chapel. When events are broadcast or livestreamed, these same volunteers run the cameras. Their support ensures that event attendees can hear presenters and that those who are unable to attend in person, can experience the meetings or performances in the comfort of their homes.

Tony der Kinderen, Garden Spot Village resident since May 2018, serves as an audio-visual tech in the Chapel. “Running the camera is an art,” Tony says. “It’s not just pointing the camera at the speaker. I try to enhance the story with the camera. Sometimes, I find I am so focused on getting the right camera angle that I miss the presentation. I’ve done a lot of research on video production. A lot of reading, watching YouTube videos. I really enjoy it.” Tony encouraged his wife, Arlene, to join him as an audio-tech. She enjoys the challenge and finds satisfaction in her work when others complement her camera skills. In addition, Tony thrives on change and uncertainty; this flexibility serves him well as a volunteer. “Sometimes I walk in and I don’t know what is going to happen. We’ve had times where we are preparing for an event and we have some major technical trouble before showtime. I’ve learned to focus on the problem and find a solution without getting flustered.”

Charley Hentz, Garden Spot Village resident since October 2013, has served as an audio-visual tech for eight years. Charley says, “I absolutely love doing the camera work. It’s very, very rewarding to know I am doing a service for the entire campus; Mike Lanyon and I usually do the service for the Community Church.” He continues, “Unfortunately, people can get intimidated by all of the buttons and the technology, but you have to get past that. It’s easy to learn. If you can operate an ordinary cell phone camera, you can do this too.” Blanche Pilotti, Garden Spot Village resident since June 2021, started training with Tony on the audio-visual equipment in early 2023. She heard there was a need for volunteers so she decided to try it. She says, “I like to learn something new all the time. The other volunteers are really good to work with and they are very encouraging.” She continues, “Once you sign up, you are part of a team. Often people are afraid of technology, but everyone is willing to help teach you. Plus, I’ve found myself at programs I probably wouldn’t have thought about attending, but I enjoyed the program and learned something new as well.” Blanche challenges others, “Think about volunteering – you’ll never know if it’s a good fit until you try. You might be surprised, you might just like it!”

If you are interested in learning more about audio-visual volunteer opportunities, please contact Volunteer Services at 717.355.6204.

WELLNESS TIPS FOR 4TH OF JULY

As we get together to celebrate the 4th of July with burgers, family and fireworks, it is also a good time to reflect on our overall health and make an effort to make the holiday as healthy as possible. To help celebrate our independence, we will provide you with some tips, below, to make your day the healthiest July 4th possible.

1. Enjoy family and friends: This is the perfect holiday to take a break from your busy life and enjoy some quality time with your family and friends. Have a barbeque outdoors and enjoy the fireworks that light up the sky.

2. Wear sunscreen: Many people are outside by the pool, beach, or playing games during the 4th of July holiday. Make sure to protect yourself from bad sunburns by applying sunscreen throughout the day.

3. Stay hydrated: Temperatures are rising and we can feel the heat! It is important to drink lots of water to stay hydrated and keep your body from overheating. Limit the amount of caffeine you drink.

4. Watch what you eat: This holiday isn’t necessarily associated with the healthiest of foods (burgers and hot dogs). While it is okay to enjoy these foods occasionally, do your best to avoid overeating. Fruit is a good, healthy snack on a hot summer day.

5. Be careful with fireworks: It is important to understand how dangerous fireworks can be. Avoid playing with fireworks on your own. Instead, go enjoy a big display put on at a local park or beach that is run by professionals.

JULY IS THE TIME TO FOCUS ON:

HEALTHY EATING: Communicate the benefits of eating local, eating fresh. Promote farmer’s markets and fresh fruits and vegetables. Find Pick-YourOwn-Farms, local farmer’s markets, and roadside stands. The Center for Disease Control suggests you get five fruits and vegetables a day, but why limit yourself in the season of fresh and local? July is National Blueberry Month. At about 80 calories a cup, these little berries pack a nutritional wallop!

FITNESS & EXERCISE : It’s Parks & Recreation Month! Learn more about ways to enjoy outdoor activities in our nation’s parks. Everyone should be aware of signs of heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the importance of hydration. It’s also a good idea to check the UV Index in your area. In addition to protection against heat, taking precautions against sun exposure is also important in the summer months when sun rays are at their strongest. Protect yourself from UV rays and solar radiation.
