VOLUNTEER SERVICES
AUDIO-VISUAL TECH SUPPORT
Jodi Lefever, Acting Director
Volunteer audio-visual techs run the sound for events in the Chapel. When events are broadcast or livestreamed, these same volunteers run the cameras. Their support ensures that event attendees can hear presenters and that those who are unable to attend in person, can experience the meetings or performances in the comfort of their homes.
Tony der Kinderen, Garden Spot Village resident since May 2018, serves as an audio-visual tech in the Chapel. “Running the camera is an art,” Tony says. “It’s not just pointing the camera at the speaker. I try to enhance the story with the camera. Sometimes, I find I am so focused on getting the right camera angle that I miss the presentation. I’ve done a lot of research on video production. A lot of reading, watching YouTube videos. I really enjoy it.” Tony encouraged his wife, Arlene, to join him as an audio-tech. She enjoys the challenge and finds satisfaction in her work when others complement her camera skills. In addition, Tony thrives on change and uncertainty; this flexibility serves him well as a volunteer. “Sometimes I walk in and I don’t know what is going to happen. We’ve had times where we are preparing for an event and we have some major technical trouble before showtime. I’ve learned to focus on the problem and find a solution without getting flustered.”
Charley Hentz, Garden Spot Village resident since October 2013, has served as an audio-visual tech for eight years. Charley says, “I absolutely love doing the camera work. It’s very, very rewarding to know I am doing a service for the entire campus; Mike Lanyon and I usually do the service for the Community Church.” He continues, “Unfortunately, people can get intimidated by all of the buttons and the technology, but you have to get past that. It’s easy to learn. If you can operate an ordinary cell phone camera, you can do this too.” Blanche Pilotti, Garden Spot Village resident since June 2021, started training with Tony on the audio-visual equipment in early 2023. She heard there was a need for volunteers so she decided to try it. She says, “I like to learn something new all the time. The other volunteers are really good to work with and they are very encouraging.” She continues, “Once you sign up, you are part of a team. Often people are afraid of technology, but everyone is willing to help teach you. Plus, I’ve found myself at programs I probably wouldn’t have thought about attending, but I enjoyed the program and learned something new as well.” Blanche challenges others, “Think about volunteering – you’ll never know if it’s a good fit until you try. You might be surprised, you might just like it!”

Wellness Tips For 4th Of July
As we get together to celebrate the 4th of July with burgers, family and fireworks, it is also a good time to reflect on our overall health and make an effort to make the holiday as healthy as possible. To help celebrate our independence, we will provide you with some tips, below, to make your day the healthiest July 4th possible.
1. Enjoy family and friends: This is the perfect holiday to take a break from your busy life and enjoy some quality time with your family and friends. Have a barbeque outdoors and enjoy the fireworks that light up the sky.
2. Wear sunscreen: Many people are outside by the pool, beach, or playing games during the 4th of July holiday. Make sure to protect yourself from bad sunburns by applying sunscreen throughout the day.
3. Stay hydrated: Temperatures are rising and we can feel the heat! It is important to drink lots of water to stay hydrated and keep your body from overheating. Limit the amount of caffeine you drink.
4. Watch what you eat: This holiday isn’t necessarily associated with the healthiest of foods (burgers and hot dogs). While it is okay to enjoy these foods occasionally, do your best to avoid overeating. Fruit is a good, healthy snack on a hot summer day.
5. Be careful with fireworks: It is important to understand how dangerous fireworks can be. Avoid playing with fireworks on your own. Instead, go enjoy a big display put on at a local park or beach that is run by professionals.
JULY IS THE TIME TO FOCUS ON:
HEALTHY EATING: Communicate the benefits of eating local, eating fresh. Promote farmer’s markets and fresh fruits and vegetables. Find Pick-YourOwn-Farms, local farmer’s markets, and roadside stands. The Center for Disease Control suggests you get five fruits and vegetables a day, but why limit yourself in the season of fresh and local? July is National Blueberry Month. At about 80 calories a cup, these little berries pack a nutritional wallop!
FITNESS & EXERCISE : It’s Parks & Recreation Month! Learn more about ways to enjoy outdoor activities in our nation’s parks. Everyone should be aware of signs of heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the importance of hydration. It’s also a good idea to check the UV Index in your area. In addition to protection against heat, taking precautions against sun exposure is also important in the summer months when sun rays are at their strongest. Protect yourself from UV rays and solar radiation.
