What Is A Self Image?
Before we can set off on the wonderful and exciting journey of how to change your self image, we have to first understand what a self image actually is, and it’s really very simple.
A ‘self-image‘ is really just an image you hold of yourself. It is a concept or idea of the way you see yourself, and the way you hold onto this image is through habitual patterns fixed in your subconscious mind. Click here to discover how to reprogram your subconscious mind .
This image is the way you view yourself. Now this image is very, very powerful. According to Maxwell Maltz, in the amazing book I would highly recommend getting, ‘Psycho-Cybernetics’, he says:
“A human being always acts and feels and performs in accordance with what he imagines to be true about himself and his environment.”
Click Here To Find Out More About Psycho-Cybernetics. Now you may want to read that over a few times. Whatever you believe to be true about yourself and your environment, is what dictates the feelings you feel, which dictate your actions, and therefore your results.
If you don’t like your results in any area of your life, you have to change your self image, or what you believe is true.
How Is Your Self Image Formed?
Your self image is formed usually around the ages of 1-5 years old. In this time, you are new to the world and haven’t yet decided what is true about yourself and your environment.
As things happened to you and as people such as your teachers, peers, and parents, treated you certain ways, you responded by making a judgment about who you are in relation to that person or situation.
For example, let’s say that you were 4 years old and playing with another child on the playground. Let’s also say that the other child, because he saw someone on TV saying this and he wanted to emulate it, turned to you and said, “Ew, your hair is gross!”
Well at that young age you had a decision, you could either take that as meaning, “Oh no, my hair must be gross, therefore I must be unloved.” Which if believed at that impressionable age, could literally control the course of your life.
Or you could think, “Ha, my hair is much cooler than yours!” or tons of other beliefs. The key is to form positive images of yourself.
How To Change Your Self Image
So now that you know how your self image was formed at a young age, and you know that it is crucial to have a positive self image if you want positive results in your life, then we can jump into how to easily change it.
Steps To Changing Your Self Image:
1. Write down on a sheet of paper, an in-depth description of who you want to become. Do you want to be confident? Funny? Whatever traits and beliefs you want, jot them down in great detail. 2. Before bed each night for at least 3 weeks, visualize yourself in places you normally go. This time, see people reacting to you as if you have those traits. If you want to be funny, see people in places you go often, laughing at your jokes.
Do this consistently and you will literally change the image in your subconscious mind, rewiring your brain, and changing your self image and the way you feel about yourself.
