How To Stop Bad Habits: What Is A ‘Habit’?

Before I can explain how to simply and easily stop bad habits, I must first lay the foundation with a distinction. A ‘ habit is any action that you take part in that is unconscious. In other words, it’s any thing you do that you aren’t aware you are doing.

For example, let’s say that you want to stop smoking and you always have a cigarette after you are done eating a meal. Well, then your habit is to smoke after eating, because you aren’t consciously thinking, “Ok now I will go over and smoke because I’m done my meal.” Instead you just walk over and pick up a cigarette. It’s a habitual pattern you have developed.

How To Stop Bad Habits: Becoming Aware


So because habits are unconscious and outside of your awareness, when wanting to stop bad ones, you want to begin by becoming aware of what you do during the day. This bit takes a little bit of mental strength, but start to notice as you move throughout your day, what typically sets off the habit?

For example, if you want to stop biting your nails, discover when exactly you tend to bite your nails during the day. Is it while sitting down watching tv? Do you bite your nails while driving? Become conscious of when you do the habit and then you can start to stop it by using the next step…

How To Stop Bad Habits: Choose Differently

Now in this part of the powerful process, I have to make an important distinction. Once you do the last step and become aware of the habits you don’t want to exhibit, then it’s not actually a habit anymore… it’s a choice.

That’s right. Once you are aware of what you are doing, it is no longer outside of your control, and now if you still take part in the old habit, it’s because you are choosing to. Now you may be wondering, “Well how do I overcome the need to want to keep choosing it?”

How To Stop Bad Habits: Get Leverage

The last understanding you have to have to stop bad habits, is to realize why we do anything as humans. It basically comes down to 2 basic needs. The need to avoid pain, and gain pleasure. That’s it! In every moment you will always act in the direction you believe is more pleasurable and move away from what you believe is more painful.

So if going to overeat, the reason you would keep doing it, is because in that moment you believe it is more pleasurable to keep eating more, than to stop. When wanting to know how to stop bad habits, you need to link massive pain to choosing the old action, and massive pleasure to not doing it.

To do this I recommend writing on a notebook, all the painful things you will have happen if you keep indulging in the habit. For overeating you may write something like, “I will continue to gain weight, feeling so unattractive that I will repulse people at the sight of me. I can barely breathe because of the weight I’ve gained, etc.” It’s important to make


this step actually evoke pain inside of you. (This is necessary to getting leverage on yourself)

Then write all the pleasure you will receive if you stop the habit. Maybe, “I’ll look great, have amazing relationships, and the energy to do anything I want!” Once you do this process, read it often, and your mind will begin to understand that you want to really avoid that old behavior.

How To Stop Bad Habits: Conclusion

And that my friend is exactly how to stop bad habits for good! Once you link pain to the old action and pleasure to not doing it, and you know when you usually choose to do it, you will find yourself suddenly losing the urge to partake at all! At this point, it is a good idea to replace it with a better habit, like walking around the neighborhood, reading amazing success books, basically anything beneficial you can do during the time you used to partake in the old habit.
