Biden Promotes Unity Agenda

In his State of the Union speech President Biden attempted to unite Americans of diverse political opinions together “We are stronger today than we were a year ago And we will be stronger a year from now than we are today,” he remarked to both houses of Congress in the Capitol In the speech Biden emphasized his intention to “fund the police,” by committing $350 billion to cities, states, and counties to hire more police officers as part of his American Rescue Plan for community safety. He commended Intel for building a new manufacturing plant in Ohio to produce microchips in the US making way for more American independence from foreign imports Ford and GM were acknowledged for investing billions in building more electric cars and creating over 15,000 new jobs in America.

President Biden condemned Russia for its “unprovoked” invasion of Ukraine and observed that the Ukrainian people and President Zelenskky are “inspiring the world” in their struggle to keep their homeland. He announced that America would close off US airspace to Russian planes.

In the Republican Party’s formal response to the SOTU, Iowa Gov Kim Reynolds compared Biden to President Carter in the 1970s when inflation and violent crime rose to historic levels and the Soviet Union was trying to “redraw the world map” reports David Jackson of USA Today.

When I first entered San Gabriel High School, my first impression of the school was wow – huge campus and huge school spirit I was greeted with a line of smiling cheerleaders welcoming Garvey eighthgraders. We were divided into smaller groups and followed a gracious Matador tour guide around the school I loved my student guides because they were very friendly and answered all of our questions about being a

Music Show in the Theater

The Mustang Band performed their first show for parents on March 30 at 6:00 p m in the Garvey Theater Over 130 audience members enjoyed the 45 minute performance. Tickets were $1 for students and $2 for non-student guests. All students were required to be accompanied by a chaperone 18 or older Performing on stage for my mother and sister and the other parents and family members in the audience The spotlight shining on us caused me to overthink but we performed our six songs without problems After the sixth song, I was a little out of breath When the show

Incoming freshmen from other local middle schools also participated in SG school spirit games and activities At the end of the San Gabriel Showcase students explored the club fair Dozens of SG clubs provided candy and treats from their booths to entice middle school students to join their club There is a club at SG for every student and every interest including clubs for video games, anime, environmental awareness, caring for animals, homeless outreach and more.I returned to Garvey with a bag of SG treats and a great excitement about going from being a Mustang to a Matador

concluded we received many compliments which gave me a feeling of pride We are scheduled to have one more concert before the end of the year and I feel excited to perform again. Currently we are required to wear these face masks with zippers on them for woodwind players

Earlier in the school year, the Mustang Band performed their holiday show to Garvey students on Friday, December 10. Students from Ms. Dale, Mr Cardenas, Ms Zaidi, and Mr Cheung’s class attended the in person performance at the outdoor bench area and outside of the administration building.

Right before Garvey’s spring break week long vacation, a limited number of eighth-grade students will be visiting Catalina Island for three days Participating in the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) costs almost $300 per student, but I believe that it is a good investment in a one of a kind experience. The organizer of this trip, Mr. Naka, has held several meetings to discuss the action-packed agenda and important details about the field trip I look forward to engaging in numerous island activities including snorkeling, rock climbing, and hiking through the beautiful environment The CIMI camp explores various fields of study including marine biology, oceanography, and island ecology

Hopefully we are able to dissect a squid like other campers from previous years. The field trip may challenge students to live without technology and social media for several days since there is limited phone and wifi service We will still be able to capture great photographs of the island and this may force us to interact with others in real life rather than virtually

Another island adjustment is evening time Campers must return to their cabin dorms by the 9 p.m. curfew time. Sleeping earlier will give us more energy in the morning for sunrise activities. Other Garvey staff who will be serving as chaperones include Mr Cardenas (21st Century), Ms Herbert (Math), and Ms Alex Cervantes (student counselor)

On Sunday, April 3, the 64th Annual Grammy Awards took place in Las Vegas featuring top Billboard artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, and BTS in the spotlight for the music industry’s biggest night Not only did the artists work hard to come up with songs and performances that are Grammy-worthy, but loyal fans also voted fervently in hopes that their favorite artists would win SZA, Halsey, and Lils Nas X (wearing a bold white bodysuit) were the fashion stars of the red carpet Notably, Taylor Swift skipped the red carpet this year. During the show fans enjoyed performances from Silk Sonic, Lady Gaga, and Justin Bieber.

However, when it was time to hand out the actual Grammy awards, many fans felt like the

artists that were most deserving, got snubbedraising skeptics to cry “Scammys” for yet another year In the past, music icons such as Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, and Ariana Grande were never awarded Album of the Year, despite breaking record sales and winning the hearts of millions of fans Music fans felt like history repeated itself this year, when Jon Batiste won the coveted Album of the Year award over Taylor Swift’s “Evermore” and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour ” BTS seemed to be invited again to the Grammys solely to gain more viewers, rather than be awarded for their success in the West. Lil Nas X seemed to be used by the Grammys for the same reason

Overall, the Grammys Show has a way of enticing and disappointing fans at the same time Every year, fans tune in to the award show and leave disappointed when their favorite artists are robbed of the top awards. I hope that future Grammy voters will actually award the artists who are the most deserving and have the greatest impact on the community of fans

The New & Improved Batman Jacob Hor

After many delays and years of development, Matt Reeve's The Batman is finally here The Batman has grossed $600 million worldwide within just two weeks. The Batman is a mystery/thriller starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, and Paul Dano Ever since it was announced in 2016 I had been waiting patiently and eagerly Originally, The Batman was going to be a different movie directed by and starring Ben Affleck. Due to creative differences, Ben Affleck left the project and Matt Reeves took over This is the first stand-alone Batman film in 10 years, since Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises In the movie you will notice that the writers place greater emphasis on detective work as opposed to action scenes. The Batman is a better movie than Spider Man No Way Home because it does not follow the same comic book movie formula I rate this movie a 10 out of 10 and rank it at number one in my top 5 superhero movies.

Chloe Kim Wins Gold in Beijing

Olympic champion Chloe Kim returned to the Winter Olympics on February 4, winning gold in the half-pipe, representing her country and adding to her three gold medals in snowboarding At the Mountain Dew tour preliminaries on December 19, Kim earned a 96 score to win the contest and secure her position on the US Olympic team. A gutsy frontside 1080 tailgrab, switch frontside 900, into a Cab 1080 frontside 540 sealed the deal at the judges’ table Local athletes on the US snowboarding team half-pipe joining Kim in Beijing are Shaun White (Carlsbad), Toby Miller (LA), Sonora Alba (San Pedro), and Maddie Mastro (Wrightwood)

Athletes like Kim have the support of the US government, but the Biden Administration will join Canada, Great Britain, and Australia in a “diplomatic boycott” of the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, citing the human rights record of China. White House press secretary Jen Psaki specifically called attention to “the PRC’s [People’s Republic of China] egregious abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang ” In January 2021 Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that China was committing genocide against the Uighur people (CBS News)

Russian president Vladimir Putin said that he will attend the opening ceremony in Beijing. Meanwhile the US and other nations engaged in the diplomatic boycott will not send any delegates to the Games. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, “The U S will pay a price for its practices,” but did not clarify what this meant, reports Tom Hamilton of ESPN.

Skincare For Teens

they becomes clogged and form those painful red pus filled bumps Because of puberty, your body is rapidly changing, producing more sweat and toxins onto your skin This is the reason behind the outbreak of pimples in this stage of your life

How to prevent acne:

DO NOT touch your face. Your hands are filled with bacteria which can cause pimples to grow Maintain a balanced and healthy diet because believe it or not, delicious junk food can cause acne

Hi, this is your local acne prone teenager, Linda. As puberty slams us like a load of bricks, our bodies start changing and one of the most irritating symptoms of growing up are those painful oil filled spots that pop up on our face pimples Just like many of you, I thought I would be safe from pimples but guess what? Those nasty demons appeared on my face. To begin, I’m not a dermatologist and I don’t intend to be one, but my skincare advice is based on my own personal experience and I have enjoyed some success Where do pimples come from? Pimples form because of a build up of oil and sweat. Your face is is filled with millions of hair follicles, teeny tiny holes on your face When these tiny holes get exposed to bacteria and oil,

DO NOT pop pimples. Popping a pimple can form a scar that may last on your face forever Use trusted skin treatments to slowly make the pimples go away

Use lukewarm water when cleansing your face

Identify the type of skin you have Is your skin oily or dry? This will help you find the right skincare products I have found success in using products from Curology, a skincare company based in San Francisco. They have had over 3,000 customer reviews on Facebook with an average rating of 4 2 out of 5 and over 9,000 reviews on Influenster

Rams win Second Super Bowl

Title

The LA Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 to win their second Super Bowl title at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp received the game MVP award with 100 yards and 2 touchdowns Rams Coach Sean McVay learned from the crushing loss to the Patriots in their last SB appearance in 2019. The 13-3 defeat was the lowest scoring SB in NFL history. Last year’s final SB score was a blowout (31-9) with the Buccaneers dominating the Chiefs This year the Rams finished the regular season (12-5) with their biggest wins against the Bucs and Niners, but they also had awful losses to the Packers (3628), Titans (28-16) and Niners. Their opponents in the SB, the Bengals, were 10-7 with key victories over the Chiefs and Titans, but glaring losses to the

Browns (21-16), Chargers (41-22) and Jets

The Rams’ defense was the key to victory on Sunday. Aaron Donald and Von Miller both had big sacks on Joe “Shiesty” Burrow. Darious Williams and Ernest Jones had 15 tackles combined Brycen Hopkins and Odell Beckham were also vital to the Stafford win over the upstart Bengals Having home field advantage gave the Rams an edge over Taylor, Higgins, Mixon, Hubbard, and the Bengal squad. The last time LA hosted a Super Bowl was 1967, the first Super Bowl, when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs (35-10)

Chicago Schools Suspend In Person Learning

Schools in the Chicago Public School District cancelled in person learning on January 5, but plan on resuming in person learning on January 12 Seventy-three percent of the teachers in the Chicago Teachers Union voted for remote learning due to concerns about the Omicron surge impacting over 300,000 students. This decision was made after 8,000 students and 2,000 adults were sent to quarantine after returning from the Christmas holiday, reports USA Today The CTU initially drafted a proposal to return to in person learning on January 18, but agreed to return on the twelfth. In the proposal: random tests for at least 10% of students and staff every week, pause in-person school for 14 days and move to remote instruction if the Covid positivity rate increases for seven consecutive days, schools with 25% of staff

In the early days of the invasion, Russia claimed to have destroyed Ukraine’s air defense systems as explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa on February 23 CBS reports that the Russians have taken control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy released a defiant statement on his Instagram account stating, “Ukrainians will never give up their freedom and independence to anyone. Glory to Ukraine!”

The US is not sending combat troops to Ukraine, but has sent Ukraine over $3 billion in military assistance reports CBS News. The US should continue to support Ukraine against the Russian invasion to send a message that these actions are unlawful and will not be tolerated.

JusticeBreyerRetires

After serving almost 30 years on the Supreme Court, Justice Stephen Breyer (83 years old) will retire at the end of this term. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson (51 yrs old) of the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit is considered a top contender to replace Breyer’s position on the Supreme Court Jackson previously clerked for Breyer in 1999 and replaced Judge Merrick Garland on the DC Circuit when Garland was promoted to US attorney general. Jackson is from Miami and graduated from Harvard College

out due to Covid exposure for two consecutive days will result in remote instruction (20% for larger schools).

Schools with 30% of students in quarantine will result in remote learning (25% for high schools), KN95 masks for all students and staff, contact tracing teams at each school site.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot rejected the CTU’s first proposals, stating, “The best, safest place for kids to be is in school Students need to be back in person as soon as possible. That’s what parents want. That’s what the science supports We will not relent ” (ABC7 Chicago)

During his presidential campaign, President Biden promised to name a Black woman to the Supreme Court In 2015 Breyer voiced his opposition to the death penalty stating that it violates the Eighth Amendment reports Melissa Quinn of CBS News. When Breyer announced his retirement, President Biden stated that Breyer was a justice who was “fair to the parties before him, courteous to his colleagues, careful in his reasoning He’s written landmark opinions on topics ranging from reproductive rights to healthcare, to voting rights, to patent laws, to laws protecting our environment, and the laws that protect our religious practices ”

Breyer has served the Supreme Court dutifully and provides a great example for his successor in the coming months.

Drama Show for Parents & Guests

The Drama class presented a two part evening show for parents and special guests featuring C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in the Garvey Theater In the plot four siblings enter a magical portal to another world, Narnia, where the good king Aslan battles an evil witch for the fate of the kingdom. Face coverings were required for performers and because the stage sound system was being repaired, dialogue was pre-recorded for the performance.

Seventh-grade actors Jacob Chau (Edmund Pevensie) and Uma Sofia Rizo (Lucy) did a great job interpreting their characters One standout scene in the show was the encounter between Edmund and the Witch (played by Danika Martinez) involving Turkish Delight The show ended with a showdown between Aslan (Jordan Murrieta) and the Witch

The second part of the show was a tribute to the musicals of Jerome Robbins and Hermes Pan The story followed students attending school and breaking into dance numbers throughout the day For instance, a teacher (played by Mandy Phung) was giving a math lecture and then suddenly the students break into a creative dance number

I was extremely excited to be performing in front of my parents. Eighthgrade performers Tarah Cazun, Aaron Bang, and Zoreimy Melgar led the ensemble with creative dance steps The audience erupted in cheer and applause throughout the performance. When we took our final bows, the theater was filled with the support of entertained family and friends

Hey everyone, wow, what a year. I know you’re probably tired of hearing “it’s been one of the most unique and challenging years of our lives ” But I really do think it’s been a rollercoaster for all of us Finally coming back to school in-person felt like a breath of fresh air. We all got back to seeing our peers in person, and we got back into the flow of things Because if I’m being honest, I think I started to go insane being stuck at home with nothing to do There are some things I miss about distance learning, like being able to attend class in my PJ pants or being able to learn without a mask, but I wouldn’t trade the proper school experience for anything else in the world I remember how scary it was to be on campus for the first time I was all jittery and

panicking (not the best look on me), but eventually I warmed up to everything and I’m the happiest I’ve been ever since the pandemic began As a student, I understand the struggle of not wanting to go to school, not wanting to complete your work, and just not having the motivation to step into each day with your best foot forward. But as students, this school is like our second home.

This year has had its ups and downs for everyone, but we made it Every struggle, every conflict, every problem that we encountered is what shaped our middle school experience. But most importantly, it is what shapes YOU. You live and learn from your mistakes and this only makes you stronger, and able to take on anything thrown at you in life Farewell Mustangs and I wish you all the best in the years to come!

These Two Years

These two years I've spent at Garvey Intermediate have been revolutionary for me, personally. I wouldn't have chosen anywhere else to be than here. With the Coronavirus, things took a turn for the worse, but here we are; still standing and moving on. I've seen many people come and go, but only the closest have stuck with me this entire year: Julianne, Mystica, and Jordyn. Although middle school is much shorter than elementary and high school, I believe that it's one of a kind. Students are slowly finding their own interests and opening up to ideals we might have not experienced before

If it were lengthened, I feel like it would be too long for a changing point It's a shift from elementary to high school, and the switch should be subtle but quick This year has been difficult due to all the crises we ' ve had to face, but it was worth it in the end Without Garvey, I wouldn't have all these friends I've gained this year and I wouldn't have all the knowledge my Garvey teachers instilled in me.

From the Desk of the Chief

This school year at Garvey Intermediate we joined together with the rest of the world to do our best to stop the spread of the virus in order to return to our normal lives We moved forward together month by month and supported each other every

step of the way. This year at Garvey we’ve made new friendships, reinvented ourselves, found new interests, and most importantly survived through it all Who knew that we’d end up here in the final days of eighth grade so fast? For this, I want each and every one of you to be grateful for something or someone – whether it’s yourself, your friends, or your family. We all were there for our loved ones and kept each other sane. Being grateful is a simple but wonderful thing, as it leads to having hope This hope of a better future is what ultimately got us through the recent unpredictable journey

I made a promise at the beginning of this year to help us remember this year as an exceptional year, regardless of the dark cloud of the pandemic. I hope everyone at Garvey has taken steps with me towards a better tomorrow regardless of the different struggles we’ve faced this year To quote one of my favorite artists, Taylor Swift, “And if you never bleed, you’re never going to grow ” Thank you for growing with me and being ready to embark on yet another beginning in high school after a hard-earned ending in middle school.
