In Portland the “defund the police” movement, resulted in the resignation of 54 officers and the retirement of 75 officers In 2019 there were 4 resignations and 6 retirements, according to NBC KGW8. On November 17, the Portland City Council increased the police budget by $5.2 million. “Many Portlanders no longer feel safe and it is our duty to take action and deliver better results,” remarked Wheeler
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan plans on using $7.5 million to hire more police officers as crime spikes in her city. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot plans on recruiting more police officers as the murder rate has jumped 60% in Chicago The Atlanta city council voted to increase the police department budget by 7% In May, The LA City Council agreed to increase LAPD funding by 3 percent. In 2021 there have been nearly 200 homicides in LA.

Garvey students begin Thanksgiving vacation on November 22, leading up to Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 25 The turkey is the main symbol of Thanksgiving and was first recognized as such, ever since American colonist William Bradford wrote about how colonists hunted wild turkeys during the autumn of 1621 The turkey started to gain traction as a Thanksgiving meal after Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in 1863. Around 45 million turkeys are eaten each year during Thanksgiving in the US. The average turkey sold today weighs over 30 pounds No Thanksgiving dinner is complete without the comfort food of mashed potatoes Mashed potatoes are boiled potatoes mashed up into a paste-like
consistency The potato was first cultivated in Peru by the Inca Indians around 8,000 to 5,000 BC The recipe for mashed potatoes originated in 1771 when a Frenchman, Antoine Parmentier, held a competition for the best potato recipe It is believed that this was where the recipe for mashed potato and gravy first originated

For the Science Olympiad competitions, it’s best to decide on what events you want to participate in early on, so you can get to studying or building Personally, I like to set aside small time slots within a day to do some research on my event and take notes, because there’s a lot of valuable information and practice material online. Being a part of Science Olympiad will help me with team building skills and learning how to prepare for important events ahead of time Now that I’ve competed in two competitions, I feel like I am more accustomed to the process I am more used to the procedure and scheduling. For my first Olympiad, I was actually very nervous, but now that I know how everything works, I’m more

at ease. that I know how everything works, I’m more at ease
I think I did greatly improve from the first competition I was able to successfully compete in all my events and I placed for the second competition. I also think the team did better this time because everything was more clear and organized now that we know how everything works.
I was pretty excited when I first saw the results because I felt like I did well in this competition yelled out, “Oh my God!
I got first place with Linda!” when the award for Food Science was announced. I was just as excited when I got fourth place for Storm the Castle I was also very pleased to find out that our team placed second overall in our division, which felt like a great achievement for all of us

The Garvey Players of the 8th grade drama class staged their performance of the classic play “Peter Pan,” written by JM Barrie. This play was the first show in almost two years that Garvey held in real life and was directed by Drama teacher, Mr Cheung The play featured lead actors Connor Cheung (as Peter Pan), Zoreimy Melgar (as Wendy Darling), and Fanghan Fu (as Captain Hook), who gave an entertaining performance as the 25 minute show unfolded. Although they did not use props or wear costumes, the cast did their best to provide the audience with an amusing performance The story is a fantasy that took place in the early 1900s in the fantasy land of “Neverland,” which is Peter’s home and London, Wendy’s home
The play began with our protagonist Peter Pan visiting the home of Wendy Darling with his beloved fairy, Tinkerbell (played by Julissa Del Toro). They then take on an adventure with Peter teaching Wendy and her brothers how to fly and they, alongside Tinkerbell, are soon captured by Peter’s arch-nemesis, Captain Hook, the pirate leader Hook took them to his ship, the Jolly Roger, and tried to get them to walk the plank, but was soon rescued by our hero Peter Pan and they had an epic showdown Eventually, Hook’s good hand was eaten by the crocodile, Tick Tock, and Hook fled the scene. Peter lived happily ever after in Neverland, while Wendy stayed in London with her family.

On December 12 Catholics in Los Angeles celebrated the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. At the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels in Downtown LA parishioners attended an evening with indigenous dancers and the veneration of the relic of the tilma of St Juan Diego The Holy Virgin appeared to Diego on a tilma (a cloak, an outer garment) in 1531 and inspired him to spread the gospel of Christianity in Mexico In 1990 Pope John Paul II canonized Juan Diego and 10 years later Diego was declared a Saint Later that evening, Catholics sang “Las Mañanitas,” a traditional Mexican birthday song to honor the Holy Virgin.
On December 5 the Archdiocese of Los Angeles held its 90th Procession and Mass to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe and St Juan Diego Catholics marched from Our Lady of Solitude. Parish in East LA to East LA College Stadium. Archbishop Jose Gomez of LA invited Catholics to attend the event stating, “In the presence of Our Lady we need to feel awe and wonder Truly, it is nothing we deserve nothing we could ever earn it is a pure gift of God’s beautiful love for us.”
On the Feast Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe my family and I woke up at 4:30 am for a sunrise mass which ended at 7:00 am After church our family watched the festive dancing A local bakery provided hot atole to keep us warm in the chilly morning hours. At the end of the performance a dancer sounded the quiquizoani, a traditional musical conch shell instrument After the perfo nce, my family gathered at a friend's house for fellowship and feasting
After a year of having no routine whatsoever, my new-old routine is a welcome feeling
I look at my phone. It’s 2am. My favorite time of day
It’s the moments where it’s the quietest when all the thoughts I put aside start to resurface
But then, my mind jumps again and I remember all the good things
My family, my friends, how much happier I am, how grateful I am for my life and for my loved ones
As I close my eyes and drift into sleep, I become excited and nervous to know that tomorrow when the clock strikes 2 I will do it all over again

In an interview with AP’s Hillel Italie, Hoover reveals that It Ends With Us was inspired by her mother, who left an abusive relationship with her husband, divorcing him when Hoover was 2 years old This novel has a powerful message about personal relationships and I highly recommend it to readers interested in love stories. In 2019, Variety reported that actor Justin Baldoni optioned It Ends With Us to be adapted for film
which was a financial disaster, the 2021 reboot has earned accolades with an 82% critics score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Intrigued by the buzz around the PG-13 rated Dune, we decided to watch the two and a half hour feature and give you our views on the movie

With catchy dance songs like “Cheer Up” (2016) and “Yes or Yes” (2018), the Korean pop music girl group, Twice, has emerged as one of the top music groups today In October they released their first English song, “The Feels,” a fun dance song about falling in love Their dance videos are filled with fun energy and fresh new styles of fashion. My favorite member of the group is Dahyun, who, along with Chaeyoung, are the main rap artists
They usually don’t get featured in the singing sections of the song, but when they start rapping, it’s incredible Combined with Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, and Tzuyu, Twice is a music group that has a chance to match the influence of ITZY, BlackPink, and Stay-C Right now Twice is my new favorite group out of all the K-pop girl groups

NBA Games on Christmas
The NBA has five games scheduled on Christmas Day including head to head matchups between the Lakers versus the Nets and the Warriors versus the Suns The Lakers Nets game may be postponed because 10 Nets players are suspended for Covid testing including starter Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge.
Fresh off their most impressive win of the young season against the Celtics, the Lakers hope to turn their fortunes around with a new cast of players In the 117- 102 victory over the Boston Celtics, new Laker and LA native, Russell Westbrook made his presence known with 24 points and 11 assists in 36 minutes of playing time Teammates LeBron James (30pts) and Anthony Davis (17pts, 16 rebounds) also contributed to the much needed victory as the Purple and Gold stand at 13-12.
Team captain LeBron James focused on playing solid defense, ignoring the political remarks of Celtics center, Enes Freedom (formerly named Kanter), who accused LeBron of being a puppet of the Chinese government At their last game on November 19, Kanter wore shoes illustrated with LeBron bowing to Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is placing a crown on the head of “King James ”
On Twitter, Kanter-Freedom stated, “Sad & disgusting how these athletes pretend they care about social justice … They really do ‘shut up and dribble’ when Big Boss (China) says so … Did you educate yourself about the slave labor that made your shoes or is that not part of your research?” James responded to the incident with, ” [Kanter-Freedom] is trying to use my name to create an opportunity for himself… I seen him in the hallway, and he walked right by me.

The dragon fruit and lychee jelly create a tropical taste that is complemented by the black boba pearls This drink has earned the #1 spot on my list of favorite drinks because it takes your taste buds on vacation

In October the Biden Administration defended the use of Title 42, a clause of the Public Health Services Law (1944) that allows the government to block immigration to the US “during certain public health emergencies.”
The Trump administration used Title 42 during the outbreak of COVID-19 to expel migrants at the border, due to concerns over the virus further spreading from migrants reports Armando Garcia of ABC News.
Between October 2020 and August 2021, 938,045 migrants were expelled under Title 42 (source: US Customs and Border Protection)Under the Biden Administration the US border officials carried out over 704,000 expulsions 92,000 parents and children in families were turned back. Dressing Our Pets
It’s really cute to see pets wearing costumes but it’s very important to think about your pet’s comfort level There are tons of downsides of dressing up pets for our entertainment. Some pets may appear to be calm when wearing a costume but even if they tolerate clothing, costumes can be bad for their physical health Dressing animals in clothing can cause skin damage and pets can easily get tangled in fabrics which can lead to panic and anxiety for your furry friend.
Costumes can also cause overheating as you are adding more layers onto the fur on their bodies Animals use body language to communicate and when they are in costumes, they are less able to express their feelings through their tails, ears, and eyes, observes RSPCA (Royal Society for
human right, which is to apply for asylum.” (CBS News)
In 2021 The USBP reported more than 1 6 million encounters with migrants along the US Mexico border These 2021 encounters equal the high encounters of peak years 2000 and 1986 reports Pew Research Single adults account for the largest group of migrants (1M), followed by family units (451k), and unaccompanied children (144k). The largest migrant encounters along the US Mexico border is in the Rio Grande Valley sector (549k encounters)
Due to the coronavirus pandemic expulsion has replaced apprehension as the norm Is Title 42 needed to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

The Supreme Court upheld the Texas Senate Bill 8 law which prohibits abortion after embryonic cardiac activity (the heartbeat) is detected. The heartbeat is usually detected about six weeks into the pregnancy. The landmark 1973 Roe vs Wade case legalized abortion in America, but prohibited abortion after 24 weeks (6 months) SB 8 made it illegal to have an abortion after about 1 month Under SB 8 private citizens can sue anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion, including someone who gives a woman a ride to an abortion clinic or gives her money for an abortion reports Sarah McCammon of NPR

Holiday Concert Outside for Students
Truong
The Mustang musicians of Mr Drange’s music class performed their holiday show to Garvey students on Friday, December 10 Students from Ms Dale, Mr Cardenas, Ms Zaidi, and Mr Cheung’s class attended the in person performance at the outdoor bench area and outside of the administration building. The school concert was moved to December 10 due to a rain delay Students played a number of songs including Good King Wenceslas and Jingle Bells on brass, woodwinds, and percussion. The beginning class used recorders (internal duct flutes) Students in music class rehearsed outdoors and wore masks when not using their instruments.
Good King Wencelas, a song about a Bohemian king who delivers alms to a poor peasant on the second day of Christmas, was first popularized in 1853 by John Mason Neale.
Decorating for Christmas
This Christmas may be like last year: our family gatherings will require social distancing and we will have to use plenty of hand sanitizer. This year I would like to just relax and focus on myself, because I really need that right now I have not had the best couple of weeks and I just need a break I plan on doing lots of yoga and meditation and reading and just disconnecting myself from anyone and anything toxic in my life.
I also hope to spend time with my cousins who moved to Davis, in Northern California, a couple of years back They might visit my family this winter break My Christmas wish list: Vivienne Westwood jewelry, Realisation Par dress, Chanel

ASB Advisor Ms Ngeth reflects on returning to in person learning: I think the best part of being an ASB advisor is being able to see the growth in students and ASB members To see them progress in their leadership skills, especially reaching out to students It’s just an opportunity to really be involved in the school community I’ve been really proud of our members who are doing something out of their comfort zone. As far as fundraising this year, I’ve thought about maybe a car wash Everyone always needs to get their car washed There’s also a donation link that you could send out to family and friends, like the See’s Candies link, but it’s definitely a struggle because usually ASB will make money from selling candy grams or concessions from the dances, but because
Jewelry, Enhyphen/Twice albums, Dior perfume Last Christmas we were together at home and exchanged gifts while being on FaceTime with my aunt and uncle, cousins, grandma and grandpa On Christmas Eve, we went to get dessert pies and groceries for our dinner. We cooked together, laughed together, and celebrated together
This year I am more excited for Christmas because we will be at my grandma’s house My parents will allow me to meet with friends this year. We are going to have an amazing tree and we will cover it with ornaments and decorations. Instead of having a White Elephant gift exchange like last year, this year we are going to do Secret Santa We plan on driving to a neighborhood where the homes are decorated with pretty Christmas lights.
there [were] no dances [this year], you’re not bringing in any money from that Funds are used for school activities, school orders such as equipment, PE uniforms, promotion events, and more.
The student body this year is struggling really hard to have a personality of their own I think that students that are coming back in person and getting back to sitting at a desk, not being in their PJs, it’s almost like they have to relearn everything that they’ve learned in the last 12 or 13 years, but they all have to do it all in a month or two So I think the students are really struggling I am proud that those who have their voice can still be true to themselves because I feel like right now, there are students that don’t know where they should be or what they should be doing
I’m really proud of the ASB board Everyone’s vocal in their own way and there are others who are more listeners And later on they’ll just chime in. I am really proud of the board that’s come together.

College Student Remembers Life at Garvey
in computer engineering in college because my older brother persuaded me to, but I decided to switch majors, as it felt more comfortable for me to be in the education field [This is an example of how Garvey “taught me to be more free” with decision making].
Who was the most memorable teacher you had at Garvey?
When Mom was an Eighth Grader Lexie Flores
Not too long ago, my mom, Johanna, was an eighth grader too Today she is a wonderful mom who cares for me and my two younger siblings. She happens to be interested in makeup and the mystic arts among many other things
Lexie: What was eighth-grade like for you?
Katelyn Lee spoke to her sister, Kylie Tran (’15), a student at Cal Poly Pomona University majoring in education about being an eighth-grader at Garvey
What was your time like at Garvey? Did being a student at Garvey influence your perspective on life now?
My time at Garvey was awesome! Some of the people that I’ve met at Garvey are still friends with me today. Garvey has taught me to be more free and to not force myself into situations just to appeal better to people around me It’s middle school, after all You shouldn’t fixate yourself on how you look or act towards others The biggest step forward is to focus on education and planning what high school you’ll attend. I used to major in
Our Science Teachers
Tamanaha & Staff
Mr. Naka He is by far my favorite teacher at Garvey He is very engaging and gives us a reasonable amount of homework. The numerous class projects make Science an interactive learning experience. Mr. Naka has a disciplined group of students who behave properly, but he also gives us space to be ourselves He is very funny and encourages group collaboration His class is a perfect 10 for me
Mr. Castroll He treats all students with warmth and ensures that students grasp class concepts before moving on to the next unit We take Cornell Notes and he creates slideshows that prepare us for exams One of my favorite activities was the fairytale graphing project. We selected a fairytale, like Snow White, and graphed the characters’ movement We have a lot of fun
Probably Mr Huerta He was always there when I needed help on projects and was overall very easy-going. If I’m coming to your promotion this year, I’d definitely love to talk to him again He’s one of the teachers who I used to look up to, and now it’s funny to think that my younger sibling now has him as a teacher.
Mom: I had to wear a school uniform and my social studies teacher was super strict about it too. Every morning we had to show him that we were [following the dress code]
Lexie: Do you still keep in contact with friends from eighth grade? Mom: No, not from eighth grade, but I do with friends that I met later on in high school.
Lexie: What was your favorite subject when you were my age?
Mom: My favorite subject was math because my teacher [was] very nice and it was my last period. My least favorite class was social studies because my teacher was super strict. My parents did not speak English so I had to translate everything for them It was also hard to explain things to them like field trips My [favorite field trip was the] graduation trip to Knott’s Berry Farm because I got to hang out with friends at a theme park.
in class, but we also meet our class learning objectives. Mr. Castroll has a great sense of humor and he is active on social media
Ms. Tang-Quick She takes time to make sure we have the best learning experience in Science I enjoy participating in class experiments and activities such as the seaweed and jelly worm activity. Escape Rooms is another fun activity that helps us learn in an interactive way She is very courteous and polite and sends out a good vibe in class
Ms. McClure (Chair) She is my favorite teacher at Garvey She assigns 3-4 assignments a week and we take notes in her class to learn unit concepts. We can earn prizes for winning class competition activities. She is very patient with English learners Her energetic approach to class is infectious and creates a more cheerful learning atmosphere.
We also got back late at night [When I was 13] I saw myself as a teacher or performing in theater When I graduated from middle school I felt very proud of myself since there were many obstacles because my parents did not know English. So it felt like I was doing it on my own, like many first generational kids.

Our Math Teachers
Katelyn Lee
Ms. Tamura (Chair) Being a student in her class is the best experience I have had so far with math class. She is patient with students who don’t understand the concepts Math was never my favorite subject, but she makes it a positive learning environment During the stressful testing week, she gave us time to recuperate and work on puzzles to relieve the stress. Her notes are very clear and help me understand difficult concepts Ms Tamura has always said, “All of Math is just following steps” and this makes a lot of sense to me She is preparing us well for high school
Mr. Wong He tries his best to ensure that the students understand the material. He will reteach concepts if the class needs it He provides helpful links and resources on Google Classroom Some students have said that Mr Wong teaches like a college professor He has a nurturing personality which makes him more approachable for help.
Mr. Habibi He gives us time to complete work in class so that we have less work to do at home In his class, we completed a fun assignment drawing and sketching the slopes of linear equations with their descriptions. It was an engaging hands-on assignment. We have Khan Academy assignments in his class He is always available to help his students
From the Desk of the ASB President
With Thanksgiving just behind us, it was a great time to reflection what I was grateful for in my life I know it seems cheesy, but sometimes taking a look at your life can really open your eyes to the great things in it I’ve found plenty of things for which to
to be grateful. My parents and siblings have always been my biggest fans and I couldn’t be more grateful for the support they’ve provided me with throughout my life I really am grateful for all my teachers, current and past They’ve given me the support that I need to succeed in my education and they’ve encouraged me to get myself out there and try to push my boundaries.
I’m grateful for, well, myself. I’m the one who gets through whatever challenges I go through I’m the one who takes care of my schoolwork and maintains a balance in every aspect of my life I’m the one who makes the decisions to take on a challenge and I’m the one who pushes myself to complete it. I’m grateful for my resilience to get through some of my struggles. I’m grateful for my ability to keep my life balanced. I’m grateful for my ability to step back and reflect I’m grateful for me
Even if you feel like you don’t have much to be grateful for, I strongly advise you to just take some time to reflect on the positive parts of your life, whether it be friends, teachers, parents, or even yourself, for getting you through your toughest times.
