THE DAILY MIRACLE | A trip to Pauley Pavilion
It’s his story and he’s sticking to it By KAREN WU The Daily Miracle If someone says they didn’t go to UCLA and says they were a walk-on pitcher and outfielder on the baseball team, they’re lying. That’s one claim Jimmy Williamson made, and it turns out that’s just one hole in his story. According to Williamson, dressed in a purple Las Vegas shirt, he is a 62-yearold man who graduated from Santa
Monica High School and did not go to college. Williamson says he used to work at UCLA helping run events, but he got fired and now occasionally helps out at UCLA. He did not give a job when asked, which introduces questions about his employment. Also, he did not show up on any Santa Monica High School class lists from 1965-1975 (the time frame he would have graduated) found on old-friends.co and www.classmates.com. Williamson says he was invited to try out for the football and basketball
teams at UCLA. He said he played junior varsity baseball in high school. However, it is impossible for him to be invited to try out for the basketball and football teams, since he didn’t go to UCLA. Also, it is unrealistic since he only played junior varsity in high school. It remains unknown why Williamson told these lies, but he appears comfortable regaling strangers in his past glories.
THE DAILY MIRACLE | A trip to Pauley Pavilion
A fascinating place BY EMILY FLOWERS The Daily Miracle Pauley Pavilion at UCLA, is an indoor arena for sports including basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics. Pauley Pavilion has held many astounding wins, including defeating USC, but that is not the only thing held there. Pauley Pavilion has also held the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards several times.
My experience with Pauley Pavilion was pleasant. It was clean and neat, and the seats were comfortable. Sitting in the seats there was astounding, because you can look around and imagine the thousands of people that were there for a really big basketball contest, or a Kids Choice Award. Pauley Pavilion was opened on June 11, 1965. I would describe the architecture as modernistic and simplistic, and I liked how shiny everything was, as if it was brand new. I think Welton
Becket, who was the architect for the pavillion, did well. Pauley Pavilion was named after Edwin W. Pauley, an American businessman and political leader. He was a former treasurer of the Democratic National Committee, and was involved in the UC Berkeley anti-war protests. Overall, Pauley Pavilion was an interesting visit, and the architecture, history, and Edwin Pauley himself, were fascinating.
THE DAILY MIRACLE | A trip to Pauley Pavilion
Jimmy vs. Lew Alcindor By YENNA KO The Daily Miracle
UCLA by telling people not to go into a building if they don’t belong in it.
Jimmy Williamson, 62, doesn’t have a job at UCLA, but he sure does like to kick people out of buildings.
When Williamson was 12 years old, he wanted to become a baseball player and he kept on pursuing that dream. “Although the volleyball teams and basketball teams wanted me to play on their team, I declined and went into baseball,” said Williamson. At his baseball camp, he played as an outfielder and a pitcher. However, he only got to play baseball as a junior varsity player and later dropped out.
Williamson says he used to work on campus as a person who helped set up the many events that took place at UCLA such as Nickelodeon events, volleyball tournaments and basketball tournaments. However, he is now retired from the job and helps out with the setting up of events and “guards” the buildings of
Williamson’s mom worked serving
lunches to the UCLA basketball team. One student named Lew Alcindor, who was 7 feet tall, always reached behind her and grabbed his lunch disrespectfully. Williamson said Alcindor used to shout at his mom, so one day, Williamson decided to talk to Alcindor. “I said to Lew Alcindor, I’m going to kick your rear-end if you shout at my mom one more time.” He never did. Jimmy Williamson is an interesting, yet fishy man.
THE DAILY MIRACLE | A trip to Pauley Pavilion
The home of champions By SUJITH KUMAR ALLURU The Daily Miracle Pauley Pavilion, a popular venue on the UCLA campus, has a basketball court, and holds trophies that were received by great basketball players. My impression of this impressive place is fabulous. Many pictures of my favorite basketball players were displayed here and I didn’t even know they went to UCLA. One such was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I never knew he came to UCLA and that his birth name was Lew Alcindor. Another example was Kevin Love who now plays for
the Cleveland Cavaliers. Pauley Pavilion also has modern architecture. I learned that a few years ago it was closed for renovation that cost about $136 million. As a result, the architecture and the style of the pavilion is much more modern and urban. I also learned many interesting facts about the championships of UCLA. I learned that it won the men’s basketball championship 9 years in a row. They won from 1965 - 1973. To me, that was really impressive. I learned that UCLA has won more NCAA championships than any other school.
Pauley Pavilion also has an extremely interesting history. This pavillion was dedicated to Regent Edwin W. Pauley at the June 1965 commencement ceremony by UCLA Chancellor Franklin D. Murphy. The first game played there was on November 27, 1965. The man it was dedicated to also has an interesting history. Edwin W. Pauley made most of his fortune running oil companies from the 1920’s. Overall, the Pauley Pavilion is an extremely magnificent place to be in.
