THE WORLD’S FIRST 4WD PLUG-IN HYBRID SUV. FROM £28,249 - £34,999 6
Including £5,000 Government Plug-In Car Grant
With the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, we haven’t just made a great car - we’ve made stopping at petrol stations a distant memory. The fusion of electric and petrol technology can deliver a staggering 148 mpg1 and creates a fraction of the CO2 emissions of a conventional small car - just 44g/km.As a result you’ll pay no road tax or Congestion Charge. Business users will only pay 5% Benefit in Kind rather than the 25%+ that most business users pay2. If your commute is less than 30 miles your petrol consumption will be minimal too. That’s because, in full electric mode, the Outlander PHEV has a range of 32 miles. Its combined petrol and electric range is an incredible 510 miles3. Plus its battery can be charged in a few hours via a domestic plug socket or a Charge Point4 – which can be installed for free5.We’ve made history – you just need to make time for a test drive. We call this Intelligent Motion.

MORE than 8,000 woman across the city have already signed up to take part in this year’s Race For Life. But there is still plenty of time to get involved in the fundraising event, which will see woman don bright pink clothing to take part in either five or ten kilometre races to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The annual event is one of the most popular in the fundraising calendar, but there are still around 7,000 spaces available for women in Bristol to get involved. This year’s Race for Life is hoping to raise around £800,000 for the life saving charity, and have this year introduced a new event – Pretty Muddy – which will see fundraisers take part in a five kilometre assault course. A spokesperson for the event said: “Thanks to research, cancer survival

T is just 12 weeks until Bristol fundraiser John Billitteri will start his next bike ride to raise money for Help for Heroes. The Bristol singer, who also goes by the stage name Frankie Johns, has already raised £50,000 for the charity but is determined to carry on. He has organised a ten-mile bike ride on Sunday, August 17 to raise money for the charity which helps wounded service personnel. So far 20 people have signed up for the ride but Mr Billitteri would ideally like 200 to join him. The 55-year-old said: “I would love to get over 200 people, but even 50 would be brilliant. The more people the better.” The intrepid fundraiser is encouraging people to register to take

ARGARET Britton has seen 40 years of fashion come and go, all from behind a Bristol Marks and Spencer counter. The employee from Bristol celebrated working for the store for 40 years this month, and was presented with a long service award in a glittering ceremony in London, complete with champagne and canapes. Margaret started work at Marks and Spencer in Bristol in 1974, when clothes rails were filled with flares, platform boots and hippy chic. She said she has seen plenty of changes in her four decades of serving Bristol’s
fashion lovers. She started out on the sales floor, before moving to admin and finance and finally a switchboard operator. So she has certainly earned a retirement break now, after faithful service for all those decades. Margaret said: “I always loved my job and it’s fantastic to mark my anniversary and share stories with so many other long-serving Marks and Spencer colleagues from across the country. “The trip to London was pure indulgence and a lovely way to celebrate 40 years. My husband come too and we went to a West End show afterwards. “I started on the sales floor, did various thing and finished served as a switchboard operator for 10 years until I recently retired. “I enjoyed the one-to-one contact
there and often went out of my way to source items for customers because I enjoyed my job.” Margaret was one of just 14 employees across the UK celebrating 40 years’ service, but there were also 92 staff who attended the event to celebrate a quarter century with Marks and Spencer. These included three of Margaret’s colleagues from M&S in Bristol – Ruta Pickles and Judith West, both customer assistants, and Sara Card, who is a finance and operations section manager, as well as Hazel Reid. With the help of an exhibition set up by the company archive in Leeds, all of them were able to reminisce about their early days with M&S – from their trusty pencils, paper and mental arithmetic, in the absence of today’s technology, to the very first sales of wine in M&S stores in 1973.

● JOHN Billitteri predicts his attempt to collect one million pennies, or £10,000, could take him five years. His total has reached 200,000 pennies, which he collected by asking for donations and cycling around Bristol with a trailer, asking people to throw in their spare change. Mr Billitteri said: “I can’t thank the public enough.”
Heroes when his daughter Marisa took part in the TV talent show X Factor in 2008. Her singing on a charity single for the cause inspired him to keep raising money for it. If you are interested in taking part you can register for the bike ride by contacting Mr Billitteri on 07775 870129, or email frankiejohns@hotmail.co.uk.
WALKS
Stroll through county history PEOPLE are being urged to join a series of guided walks across North Somerset – and learn more about the history of the district at the same time. North Somerset Council’s Ranger Service is organising a series of monthly walks to get people out and about. Walks will be held around Anchor Head, Weston, on June 15 and at Winford on July 27. There will be a walk around Ashcombe Park, Weston on August 31 and on September 28, there will be chance to explore Old Banwell. A month later, on October 26, rangers will lead a walk around Weston learning more about the town’s interesting role in the Suffragette movement. All works start at 2pm and last for two and a half hours. There is a charge of £3.80 per walk and people can just turn up on the day if they want to. For more information call 01934 626 982
TAKEOVER
Cheers as brewer takes over landmark pub A LONDON-based pub company has bought one of Portishead’s most popular hostelries. City brewer and premium pub company Fuller, Smith and Turner announced this week it has bought freehold of The Windmill pub at Nore Road. The pub, which sits next to the golf course and was previously known as the Hole in One, has been owned by Jeff Churchill for the last 16 years. During his time at the helm Jeff, a well-known and loved publican, renovated and extended the pub to provide 250 internal and 200 extern-
al covers. The pub, which dates back to the mid-19th century, underwent a major extension to its dining area several years ago with a large extension at the rear, offering panoramic views of the Severn Estuary and Welsh coastline. Mr Churchill, 65, said: “I would like to congratulate Fullers on its acquisition and wish the team every success at The Windmill. “Personally it has been a magnificent swansong for me after 37 years in the industry.” The pub deal was handled con-

Fullers, Smith and Turner said the pub added to its growing south west portfolio of businesses. Fuller’s Inns managing director, Jonathon Swaine, said: “We are very excited about the purchase of The Windmill which will help us to continue to build our portfolio in the south west. “It fits with our strategy both in terms of location and operation with

Fleurets associate Kevin Conibear said: “Business of the quality and trading levels of The Windmill rarely become available. “We approached a select number of parties and received superb levels of interest and bids from a number of operators. We are delighted that Fuller’s will continue Jeff ’s hard work in establishing The Windmill as one of the best known licensed businesses in the region.”

The origins of the M&S Long Service Celebration date back to 1918, when an employee was awarded a gold watch for 25 years loyal service to the company. Since then, the awards have become an established Marks and Spencer tradition. Over the years, almost 19,000 employees have celebrated 25 years of service, and more than 1,000 employees have worked at the retailer for 40 years. Sacha Berendji, director of retail, said: “We’re incredibly proud of our loyal workforce . “To be raising a glass and toasting more than a hundred staff this year is a real testament to the quality and dedication of our employees. “Our stores have evolved significantly over the years, but good customer service is still central to everything we do.”
“ I would love to get over 200 people, but even 50 would be brilliant. The more people the better.

THE Wills Memorial could be lit up with red and black lights to mark the global summit to end sexual violence in conflict. The summit will be held in London on June 10 to 13, and organisers are planning on lighting up buildings across the world to raise awareness. If plans are approved, joining the Wills Memorial will be the Liver Building in Liverpool, Stormont in Belfast, Exeter cathedral and Manchester town hall. Foreign Secretary William Hague will host people from across the globe at ExCel London, together with Angelina Jolie, pictured, who is the UN Special Envoy of the High Commissioner for Refugees. It will be the largest gathering ever brought together on the subject, with a view to creating momentum against sexual violence in conflict, and practical action that impacts those on the ground. Organisers hope that lighting up regional buildings will spread the message of the summit across the UK. More than 1,200 delegates, including government officials, international organisation representatives, civil society organisations and a broad range of domestic and international experts, will attend. These experts will be drawn from the legal, military, humanitarian and judicial and NGO sectors. And almost 200 Foreign, Defence and Development Ministers have received invitations.

rates have doubled in the last 40 years. But we’re not finished yet. With your support we’ll get to cures sooner. It doesn’t matter how you get involved, whether you run, walk, jog or dance the distance. As long as you’re on our side, we can put cancer in its place.” Last year’s event saw 8,000 women run, walk and jog around the downs, and this year’s event is set to be even bigger. More than 300 Race for Life events take place across the UK every year, and the money raised goes towards research to help beat all 200 types of cancer. Race for Life have also given some advice to participants for how they can raise the most money. A spokesperson said: “If you’re struggling with getting people to sponsor you, just remember that often the best way to have fun and raise sponsorship is to fundraise. Here are a few quick tips to give you some ideas; Why not run a sweepstake for people to guess your race time? Quiz nights are a great way to raise money for a group, or you could have a themed party with prizes for best costumes. If in doubt a good old fashioned bake sale always goes down well.” This year’s event will take place at Clifton Downs on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July from 10am. If you are interested in taking part, either by yourself or as part of a team in any of the events, visit www.raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org

Teacher teamwork is key to success in the classroom HAT do we really know about teaching and teachers in England’s schools? What is teaching in England really like in comparison with other countries? Schools and classrooms are often described as black boxes in which the teaching and TUESDAY, JULYlearning 1, 2014 process are impossible to truly capture and monitor in depth. In a bid to assist in this exploration of pupil learning The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and DeSUPPLEMENT INSIDEvelopment (OECD) developed the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS). TALIS does not directly link classroom teaching practices with learning outcomes. Its starting point is that teachers who believe they can successfully teach the most difficult subjects and the most difficult students are those who set higher standards and deliver better learning outcomes One of the key findings of the 2013 survey was around the concept of self-efficacy – teachers’ beliefs about their ability to influence learning. There are disparities between teachers’ sense of their effectiveness, but the interesting element was that the difference within schools was much greater than that between schools. In short it illustrates the importance of teams and how strong teamwork is. Teachers working in groups develop confidence which in turn enhances their effectiveness in the classroom. There is no difference between independent and state-funded schools, nor between affluent and deprived schools. The proportion of teachers who frequently use selected tasks according to pupil ability is 63 per cent in England, 53 per cent in low performing countries and 32 per cent in high performing countries. The proportion of teachers who use group work frequently is 58 per Read BRISTOL TIMEScent onlineinatEngland, 61 per cent in low performing countries and 25 per cent in high performing www.bristolpost.co.uk/nostalgia countries. In terms of pupil voice, it was found that teachers in high performing countries use considerably less pupil consultation than in INSIDE England. The findings of this survey indicate that teachers who participate more in decision making in their school are also more likely to believe that society values teachers. Statistically this is translated as follows, only one in three teachers in England (35 per cent) believes the teaching profession is valued by society. Teachers in most high-performing countries are more positive. For example in Singapore and Korea two thirds of teachers believe that they are valued. If formal collaborative activities aren’t already established, teachers should take the initiative to create them. It is apparent that the development of teacher confidence and positive feedback for a job well done is integral to the success they achieve in the classroom. Teachers have a responsibility to develop the future of our country and to nurture the individuals striving to take on this role. As such it is critical that they are given the support to achieve this and that they are given the opportunity to teach as opposed to completing bureaucratic tasks which detract from the task at hand.

AN Little was the fifth nurse to ever be employed by St Peter’s Hospice. When she took up her post the charity had no building and the hospice faced opposition from some doctors who resisted the upsurge of hospice healthcare. This was 35 years ago and after dedicating the majority of her career to caring for terminally ill people at Bristol’s only adult hospice in Brentry, Jan is retiring. And to mark her outstanding devotion to the organisation, colleagues old and new gathered for an emotional leaving party yesterday. Jan, first worked as a nurse at the Middlesex Hospital in London, then moved back to Bristol to the radiotherapy centre. It was there where she met a lady who watched her husband

We would like your local community to support you in collecting tokens. To ensure we provide as much support as possible, your group, along with our other finalists, will be announced in a special feature in the Bristol Post on Monday 7th July 2014. The next stage is to promote your group within your community and prepare for collecting tokens. Please find within this pack a ‘Tip Sheet’ to provide you with some ideas on how to collect tokens. Also included are flyers and posters which you can distribute and place in your local area. From Monday 7th July to Friday 15th August, tokens will be published Monday to Friday in the Bristol Post local area. The more tokens you and your community collect, the more chance you have of winning. For example, if your group collects 25,000 tokens, you will receive 250 entries into the draw. More tokens = more entries = more chance of winning. The minibus will be won by the group drawn at random from all complete entries received by the closing date. For full details of the prize and entry mechanics contact our Promotions Team on 0117 934 3000. Now in his 70s, Spitali has stepped back leaving his children, Mariangela and Vincenzo, to carry the torch. ● BRISTOL artist Tim Lane has acquired a devoted following with his dark, beautifully intricate paintings and illustrations. The works, which often feature complex, many-peopled scenes, owe something to the great 15th-painter Hieronymus Bosch. Tim’s latest exhibition, Anima Mundi, is now on at Antlers Gallery on the Harbourside.
● BRISTOL Ferment Fortnight has returned to the Old Vic until Friday, July 18, showcasing work from the drawing boards of some of the most exciting theatre talent in the Bristol area. Full details at www.bristololdvic.org.uk. Some new names and familiar faces are in the mix. We recommend Greg Wohead’s Comeback Special, a reenactment of Elvis’s 1968 gig.

Play Strindberg ● THE Ustinov, which has re-invented itself in recent seasons under the inspired guidance of Artistic Director Laurence Boswell, reaches for even greater theatrical heights with this, the first of a trio of black comedies to be presented during the autumn. The play, penned in 1968 by the late Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt has been pared down from a lengthier work by August Strindberg. In the hands of translator Alistair Beaton and
lighted that we have won the minibus. What a wonderful start to the new academic year. “Thank you to all our parents, staff, students and supporters that helped us collect the vouchers! This will really make a difference to the day-to-day learning and activities of our students. “We will be able to take them out on educational trips and sporting activities at a moments notice and give our students more opportunities for learning outside school and enrichment.” Registration for the event closed in July, with 146 not-for-profit groups entering the competition. Once they were registered, the groups rallied their troops and started collecting tokens in the paper. The more tokens collected, the more chance entrants had in the final prize draw which took place earlier this month at the Post’s offices in Temple Way. In a break from the traditional draw from a hat, the Lord Mayor of Bristol Alastair Watson plucked a piece of paper with the name Redland Green on it out of a special cubicle which blew around slips marked with names

director Nancy Meckler it is now a taut, crisp 90 minutes. Set on a Scandinavian island it is presented – like a boxing match – as twelve rounds each introduced with its own title. And the battle that goes on between bombastic husband and bitter wife is as bloody as anything you will see in the ring. of the entrants. The school is hoping that the new minibus will allow it to offer its students the chance to take part in more competitive sports by enabling them to attend more away matches. Steve Bailey, subject leader of PE at the school, said: “We are delighted to have won the bus. This will allow the department to broaden its sporting provision and transport students to more fixtures and educational visits. “We managed to collect lots of vouchers through the support of students, parents and staff. My thanks go out to all those who sent vouchers into school – we collected around 2,000 vouchers in total.” The competition, which was run in association with Renishaw, the world-leading engineering company based in the south of Gloucestershire, sparked interest from a very mixed bag of organisations across the city, from schools, to scout groups, mental health charities and community transport groups. The school will start using the new bus straight away and are pleased to have got the keys in time for the new term.

Into this grisly contest comes Kurt, Alice’s cousin who has arrived to run the island’s customs house and the dance of death becomes more complex in its plot and more biting in its dark humour. News of the Ustinov’s impressive re-birth has meant
that it can now attract top performers and the three in this production are all high quality. Greg Hicks contorts face and body in an amazing physical performance as Edgar, Sally Dexter displays a viperous tongue and sensuous body as Alice and Richard Clothier completes a top class trio as Kurt. Designers Max Jones and Ruth Hall have created a startling set with a circular, rubble-floored. sunken room containing upright piano, round card table and teletext machine all surrounded by a ring of light. The presentation runs until October 11.
O
UR GP services are in crisis. Coalition reforms to the NHS have left doctors overworked and under-supported. Patients are waiting longer and longer to see their GPs, some only to find that the treatment they need is unavailable. You may be aware that St Martin’s Surgery in Knowle was earlier this year threatened with closure after the two GPs working there were forced to leave due to the difficulties caused by the current Gover nment’s reorganisation of the NHS. Since then I’ve surveyed GP practices in my constituency of Bristol East – alongside Labour candidates in Bristol – to find out more about the problems doctors are facing. The results of this investigation have filled me with deep concern about the future of our local NHS services. These problems have been frankly predictable since the passing of this Gover nment’s deeply unpopular Health and Social Care Bill. The Labour Party, many of my constituents and prominent health care associations feared greater health inequalities, longer waiting times, more bureaucracy and warned that the law would lead to a fragmented NHS on the verge of full-scale privatisation. Sadly, this is exactly what we have seen. When Labour left office in 2010, NHS waiting times were at a record low. Now, 60% of patients are unable to see their GP within two days, and the number of people waiting more than 18 weeks for treatment has increased by 50%. At a time of unprecedented cuts, £3 billion was spent on a reorganisation of the NHS which has only led to more bureaucracy and increased paperwork for doctors and nurses. Earlier this year, a BMA survey found that this workload has led to more than half of GPs describing their morale as ‘low’ or ‘very low’. GP surgeries in Bristol have told me the same story. Several have said they are overwhelmed. One stated that, as a result of the coalition’s policies, they were one doctor away from being faced with closure like St Martin’s Surgery. Equally worrying is the negative impact which the coalition’s focus on competition is having on local services in Bristol. Another practice has indicated that as a result of it not offering certain services, authorities have threatened that its patients may be offered up to private companies. A Labour Government after the next general election will repeal the Health and Social Care Act. Additionally, we will introduce guarantees so that everyone is able to get an NHS GP within 48 hours, and those who need prompt attention are able to see a doctor the same day. There is no denying that our NHS faces challenges in the coming years, but fragmentation and privatisation are not the answer. We need a strong health service that prioritises public provision, which is backed by a Government that values the basic principles on which the NHS was originally founded.

RISTOL mayor George Ferguson has launched a scathing attack on the Liberal Democrats following the party’s claims of a £10 million “black hole” in the budget for the city’s arena. A recent report shows problems with building a car park for the arena near Temple Meads have left the budget in need of adjustment. But the mayor said planning was still at an early stage and he was certain that variances would be balanced over the long term. He said he was determined to see the arena through and accused the Lib Dems of trying to “whip up false fears” and said he wanted to “make it absolutely plain” that the arena project would be delivered. Mr Ferguson’s remarks came after the Lib Dems Tim Kent and Gary Hopkins spoke out. The latter raised the question “why the mayor
is insisting on spending £91 million when he has only recently cut £83 million for the council budget”. But Mr Ferguson dismissed the “pot-stirring” on the grounds that the cuts were taken from day-to-day running costs and not a capital project like the arena, where the funding is completely separate. He said: “The Lib Dems know this, so I can only interpret their media campaign as a deeply cynical and politically motivated attempt to undermine me and the wider council - something which shows complete contempt for the media, local people and the overwhelming regional desire for an arena.” The £90 million arena is being paid for by projected long-term income from parking and rental from its operator, which has yet to be announced. It is also being part-financed by the City Deal, which will allow the council to use business rates from the Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone. Mr Ferguson said: “We are now well on the way to delivering this important facility that is a major catalyst for the regeneration of the enterprise zone and will bring millions of pounds to the wider city region.” Officers are looking into the parking problem on the arena site. There are 2,500 parking spaces available within 15 minutes walk.
LIB DEMS’ RESPONSE ● Tim Kent, Lib Dem councillor for Whitchurch Park, responded to the mayor last night. He said: “The mayor says this any time anyone says anything which raises questions. “He attacks them to say they are playing politics. “I say we are elected councillors and elected to look after the public’s money. “I say it is their money and not the mayor’s money.”
● Gary Hopkins, Lib Dem councillor for Knowle and current party leader said on Wednesday night: “It is disappointing that the Mayor is attacking Councillor Kent for asking responsible questions about finances – the money belongs to the public, not to the mayor... “The mayor cannot hide from the simple fact that the current sums do not add up. “Bristol cannot have an Arena without secure plans in place for parking.”
Steve Bailey, subject leader of PE at the school, said: “We are delighted to have won the bus. This will allow the department to broaden its sporting provision and transport students to more fixtures and educational visits. We managed to collect lots of vouchers through the support of students, parents and staff. My thanks go out to all those who sent vouchers into school.”
