BATH CHRONICLE
Jake Edwards (left) and Henry Taylor, of King Edwards School in Bath, act out a scene from Matthew Bourne's Lord of the Flies. The boys have been both selected to appear in the production at the Millennium Centre in Wales.
The Bath Chronicle is working in partnership with Wessex Water to launch Cash for your Community, a campaign giving local community groups the chance to win a share of £10,000. Charities, primary schools and non-profit organisations can register by filling out a slip, to be printed in the paper every week between October 9 and October 30. You can also enter online at www.bathchronicle.co.uk/cash. Early nominations will be accepted via The Bath Chronicle’s website before October 9. All registrations must be received before November 5. A judging panel will choose 20 worthy causes. The share of the £10,000 these groups receive will depend on the number of voting tokens they collect. The top 20 groups will be announced in The Bath Chronicle on November 13 and readers will have the chance to vote for their favourites via voting tokens printed over four weeks in the paper. The winners will be announced at a finalist event on December 15. First prize is £4,000, second prize is £2,000, third prize is £1,000 and six runners up will receive £500. All tokens will be counted and verified by an independent source.
Pre-promotion of the Cash for your Community campaign started two weeks before launch. Using various tools of promotion, we supported the campaign with editorial teasers, in-paper promotional adverts in Bath Chronicle. As well as A2 posters at all available sites with the Bath Chronicle retailers.

Like almost every village in the country, most of the men joined up and swapped idyllic English countryside life for the horror of the trenches. A group of women from the village got together recently and came up with the idea of creating a book about the Claverton men who fell. They are not just a statistic, they are all men with a real story, with families and connections either in the village or further afield. A war memorial at the church features the names of 12 men who fell, but there were a lot more as the parish was much larger then. The problems they discover with Arnie, who can travel 350 metres along a sewer, are of-ten caused by fat poured down sinks which later congeals.
In Greater London Britain’s largest ever ‘fatberg’ was discovered - it was a lump of food and fat mixed with wet wipes the size of a London bus.
With some sewers no wider than 100mm - less than the length of an iPhone - it is only a matter of time before the congealed fat causes a blockage, or even worse sewer flooding.
Around 75% of sewer blockages are caused by disposable personal products like wet wipes which, when mixed with fat create so-called fatbergs.

As house prices soar, a new report has revealed that one in five children in Bath is now living in poverty.
Support agencies say they are doing what they can, but more and more families are turning up at food banks and needing help making ends meet. Both Penny McKissock, the director of local support agency Southside, and council leader Paul Crossley said they were surprised to see such a high level of child poverty in Bath. And the problem is much worse in some areas than others, with many more children from struggling families living in areas such as Twerton and Southdown. The knock-on effect of the budget cuts for children whose families need extra support is not yet known. But, in the meantime, the Bath and North East Somerset Council and volunteer agencies say they are pulling together to try to keep families afloat and mitigate the detrimental effect of poverty on the lives of Bath’s children. Dear Community Organiser,
Here we offer a handful of tips in support of your campaign, from coupon collection to further fundraising ideas. Even little things can make a big difference.
Congratulations!
Tips on how to collect:
We are happy to inform you that your organisation has been shortlisted for the ‘Cash for your Community 2014’. We are now offering the 20 groups/organisations the chance to win a share of the £10,000 dream fund. The total prize money will be proportionate to the number of printed coupons you collect from The Bath Chronicle. This starter pack will give you some hints and tips on how to rally support for your organisation as well as advice and dates relating to the ‘Cash for your Community’campaign. On Thursday, November 13 your organisation, together with the other successful shortlisted groups, will appear in the Bath Chronicle as part of the Cash for your Community feature along with your voting code. Members of the community can then collect coupons on behalf of their chosen organisation. The coupons will be printed in the Bath Chronicle from from Thursday, November 13 to Thursday, December 4. We encourage that coupons collected by the community are handed to you directly so that you can send them to us in batches. We then need to receive those coupons by 12pm noon, Wednesday December 10. Results will be announced in the Bath Chronicle once all votes are counted and verified. We’ve suggested ways you might want to raise awareness and canvass support from your local community. We hope that you will make the most of your chance to really make a difference. If you have any further questions, please visit www.bathchronicle.co.uk/cash or call Promotions on 01225 322322 On behalf of us all at the Bath Chronicle, we wish you the best of luck with your campaign.
1. Start collecting coupons. The more coupons you collect, the more money your organisation will receive. The first coupon will appear in the Bath Chronicle on Thursday, November 13, along with the spread of all shortlisted groups.
2. Rally your supporters. From family and friends to neighbours and colleagues, tell everyone about your special cause and encourage them to collect coupons on your behalf, printed in the Bath Chronicle until Thursday, December 4. Don’t be afraid to get the wider community involved by putting up posters and placing coupon collection boxes in shops, schools or local community centres.

A shortlist of the top 20 clubs, in with a chance of winning a share of £10,000, have been chosen. The Bath Chronicle has teamed up with Wessex Water to give away a share of £10,000 to worthy community groups. This week judges sat down to decide which 20 groups from all the entrants should go forward for a public vote. The winners of this year’s Cash for Your Community initiative will soon be announced. And now the chance is open to vote for your favourite club to make that happen. The chosen 20 finalists have been sent packs containing hints and tips, social media images, and posters to help push their campaigns. Voting begins today and all entries should be submitted by December 4. For details of how to vote, see the advert below this article. The groups will need to get their communities involved to help them collect as many votes as they can. How much of the £10,000 prize pot they win all depends on the number of votes cast for them. Last year Bath Cats and Dogs Home secured £3,000 which helped to boost the animal charity’s educational programme aimed at children. This year, the group with the most amount of votes will win £4,000, second place will claim £2,000, third is £1,000, and six runners up will each receive £500.

But meeting clients’ basic physical needs and providing them with a pleasant, stable environment is just a precursor to the real help they receive from the hostel, according to Julian House funding director Cecil Weir, pictured. “Providing a bed solves nothing,” Mr Weir said. “The really important work happens (during the) engagement process which identifies why clients have had to knock on our door in the first

It’s only through identifying those reasons that you can really properly get the clients on that journey off the streets.” Each client that stays overnight at the hostel has their needs assessed and is assigned a key worker to help them move on to more secure and independent accommodation. “There’s a dearth of suitable accommodation in Bath,” Mr Weir said. “So-

The campaign, launched in May, has been created by the charities and support organisations in Bath who give practical support for the homeless to help them promote the message that
simply giving money directly to beggars does not help solve the problem and in many cases makes the problem worse. To date the campaign has been successful in reducing the number of people begging on the streets as well as signposting services to those genuinely homeless. Investing in the community for 25 years As head of waste treatment at Wessex Water, Ashlea Lane oversees the treatment of millions of litres of waste water every day. Since Wessex Water was formed in 1974 sewage treatment has undergone a revolution. In those days it was not unusual for the River Avon through Bristol to be chlorinated in the summer to kill the smell. Today the quality of the water we return to the environment after treatment has never been higher - we achieve 99.99% compliance
with sewage discharge consents. And we continue to invest in better treatment such as the £26 million improvement scheme at Westonsuper-Mare sewage treatment works to improve water quality.
