Moreover, to invite all of our winners to the Bristol Post and see how delighted they were to win and how the money will transform their communities was very uplifting. A man has been convicted of stealing vegetables from an allotment after being caught on a hidden wildlife camera installed by a grower. Denice Williams, 55, fitted the spy device behind the foliage in her greenhouse when her prized peppers started disappearing. It filmed Stephen Roy creeping around in the dead of night and carefully selecting produce before leaving with his haul. She immediately handed the

before leaving the site,” she said Sam Morton, defending, said: “He was stealing to survive after sanctions were placed on his ability to claim benefits for 12 weeks because he missed an appointment at the job centre. The theft was committed very much out of desperation and he is a qualified chef by trade and is currently doing voluntary work at the Methodist Church in Chard.” Probation officer Mo Laughton said Roy felt bad about his crime and had told her he was stealing the produce because he wanted to eat it. “He realises that the victim had probably spent a lot of time growing these items from seed and is very sorry,” she said. Roy was also ordered to pay £69.50 in compensation after he pleaded guilty to a separate offence of damaging a Vauxhall Astra wing mirror belonging to Marlon Mears.

Win a share of £15,000 for your community group The Bristol Post is delighted to be working in partnership with Wessex Water to launch Cash for your Community. This campaign will give local community groups, charities, primary schools and non-profit organisations a chance to win a share of £15,000. From youth clubs and shelters to sports teams and trusts, the Bristol Post are inviting you to nominate your local worthy causes. After the closing date, twenty causes will then be determined by a judging panel, and will be shortlisted for the chance to win a share of £15,000. The share of the £15,000 they receive will be based on the proportion of total coupons collected. It’s that simple: the more tokens you and your community collect for your group, the more cash your group will receive. To make those coupons count, make sure you register your group today to claim your share of the £15,000.

ENS of millions of pounds is to be invested in new educational facilities in Weston-super-Mare town centre in a bid to breathe new life into the seaside resort. North Somerset Council is to work with Weston College on its plans to spend up to £15 million on a major regeneration of the resort’s Winter Gardens to transform it into a university ‘hub’. The college has already had an outline bid of £10 million to provide a new legal and professional services academy along with a new technical centre agreed in principle by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The innovative scheme would involve refurbishing and extending the current Winter Gardens to include a new legal and professional services academy on the ground floor.

The development would include lecture theatres, an independent learning and library centre, admin areas, a court room and a seminar room. The existing café would be retained and refurbished and a new entrance created. The building would be extended in the current roof space to create a first floor which would house a gallery, seminar rooms and tutor rooms. The second phase would see the Winter Gardens, which fronts onto the seafront, refurbished so the ballroom could be used as a conference area with retractable seating. The third phase would include a new four-storey block being built on the Winter Gardens which would become the college’s university centre. The new extension would front out onto the town square, which is currently used for various events, and stalls and small businesses encouraged to start up. The council is also looking at sites to build new residential developments – up to 2,000 new homes and halls of residence for students – in the town centre as

part of the scheme. One of the sites under consideration for possible development is the currently underused Locking Road car park. The college, which is rated as outstanding by Ofsted, currently has around 800 students on roll. It was given higher education status by the Government earlier this year, enabling it to expand provision with the aim of having a ‘university centre’ in the town, which could see the

number of students grow to 2,500. Council officials say the vision, which is still in the early stages, bring new people to the town and act as a catalyst to attract new retailers and residents to the resort, ‘greatly improving’ Weston’s offering. The council’s executive is expected to back the submission for funding by Weston College to the LEP at its meeting tomorrow .

A YOUNG Bristol care-home worker has been surprised with a national award after being put forward by the daughter of one of her patients. Twenty-year-old Holly Burnell was called into a special staff meeting at Carlton Mansion, Clifton, where she works, and surprised with the Recognition Of Caring and Kindness award. The award, run by the Four Season’s care group, aims to recognise carers who make an important impact on the lives of care-home residents and their families. Holly, from Ashton, was surprised with the award along with a bunch of flowers and a cake made by chefs at Carlton Mansion. Holly said: “My manager said we were having a staff meeting and led me into a room where everyone was waiting to surprise me. “It was a complete surprise. “I feel really happy and appreciated.” Holly, who started as a care worker in 2012, was kept in the dark by her colleagues, who all knew about her win. Colleague Maggie, said: “She really deserves this award, she’s so lovely and is always cheery. “It’s a credit to her that she is so young and has been nominated for this.” COMMENT: PAGE 11

Dear Community Organiser,

Here we offer a handful of tips in support of your campaign, from coupon collection to further fundraising ideas. Even little things can make a big difference.

Congratulations!

A2 poster for use within the groups community to help with collecting votes

The total prize money will be proportionate to the number of printed coupons you collect from The Bristol Post. This starter pack will give you some hints and tips on how to rally support for your organisation as well as advice and dates relating to the ‘Wish Cash for your Community’campaign. On Wednesday, November 5 your organisation, together with the other successful shortlisted groups, will appear in the Bristol Post as part of the Cash for your Community feature along with your voting code. Members of the community can then collect coupons on behalf of their chosen organisation. The coupons will be printed in the Bristol Post from Wednesday November 5 until Tuesday, December 9. We encourage that coupons collected by the community are handed to you directly so that you can send them to us in batches. We then need to receive those coupons by 12pm noon, Wednesday December 10. Results will be announced in the Bristol Post once all votes are counted and verified. We’ve suggested ways you might want to raise awareness and canvass support from your local community. We hope that you will make the most of your chance to really make a difference. If you have any further questions, please visit www.bristolpost.co.uk/cash or call Promotions on 01179 343034. On behalf of us all at the Bristol Post, we wish you the best of luck with your campaign.

1. Start collecting coupons. The more coupons you collect, the more money your organisation will receive. The first coupon will appear in the Bristol Post on Wednesday, November 5, along with the spread of all shortlisted groups.

Facebook imagery sent to shortlisted groups for social media

From family and friends to neighbours and colleagues, tell everyone about your special cause and encourage them to collect coupons on your behalf, printed in the Bristol Post until Tuesday, December 9. Don’t be afraid to get the wider community involved by putting up posters and placing coupon collection boxes in shops, schools or local community centres.

3. Look out for special coupons. We may be printing double value coupons, so keep your eyes peeled and

make sure everyone knows when they appear. Please note that photocopied coupons will not be counted.

4. Send your coupons in to the Bristol Post by 12pm, Wednesday, December 10. The amount of money

each organisation receives will be revealed in the Bristol Post once coupons have been counted and verified.

Investing in the community for 25 years As head of waste treatment at Wessex Water, Ashlea Lane oversees the treatment of millions of litres of waste water every day. Since Wessex Water was formed in 1974 sewage treatment has undergone a revolution. In those days it was not unusual for the River Avon through Bristol to be chlorinated in the summer to kill the smell. Today the quality of the water we return to the environment after treatment has never been higher - we achieve 99.99% compliance

with sewage discharge consents. And we continue to invest in better treatment such as the £26 million improvement scheme at Westonsuper-Mare sewage treatment works to improve water quality.

Investing in the community for 25 years Ben Harding’s job at Wessex Water is like that of a detective - everyday he is looking for clues and trying to trace something that is deep underground and often goes unnoticed to the untrained eye. For Ben is one of our leakage inspectors whose role it is to trace and tackle leaks on both customers’ pipes and own network of 11,600 kilometres of water mains. The work that Ben and his colleagues are doing has helped us to achieve the lowest ever leakage
