WESTERN GAZETTE EVENTS In 2015 the Western Gazette is focussing on its two major events – the Pride Awards and Business Awards – to make them bigger and better than ever. Our aim is to ensure that by focussing on just two events next year, we will ensure that all sponsors who come on board with us get the best possible return for their investment. The Pride and Business Awards are now renowned in the area for giving much needed recognition for community and commercial heroes. However, they would not be possible without the backing of our valued partners, and we hope this pack will explain a little more about how important these events are in our community and how vital your support is to them. If you have any questions about anything in this pack, please do not hesitate to contact me. Emma Slee Editor Western Gazette

We hear a lot about the Big Society these days, but our towns and villages have always been enhanced by people who think nothing of doing something for others. These awards are all about thanking them for what they do and giving them the credit they deserve. We are immensely proud that the 2015 Pride Awards will be the fifth of their kind, and they continue to go from strength to strength. Last year we had the most nominations to date and we’re certain that in 2015 we will receive even more as the event becomes further established. The categories recognise people who go above and beyond the call of duty, those who care for others and their communities and those who have been involved in remarkable acts of bravery. With your support we can continue to support our local community and celebrate those who make a difference.

What winning a Pride Award means to us Clare Aparicio, owner of the River Parrett CafĂŠ in Langport, won the special AgustaWestland Award. She has fundraised relentlessly since the start of the local flooding in Thorney and Muchelney. She said: “I was thrilled when I had notification that I had been shortlisted for a Pride Award. The sheer enormity of what myself and my girls achieved here in the cafe was challenging and difficult but the nomination from members of the public reinforced the nature of the voluntary work we were undertaking. It recognised that there are people who go way over and above to help others in some way. I was honoured to be invited to the event, superbly organised by the Western Gazette, and felt humbled to be in such esteemed company. Winning was just the inspiration I needed to continue with my work. I would love to help or be involved with the pride awards in the future and highlight the impact they have for people.

Annette Weale won the Sporting Hero award. She is the long and middle distance running coach for Yeovil Olympiads Athletic Club and spends hours of her own time taking groups of children through stamina training and encouraging them to improve. She said: “It was a great honour to be nominated in the first place and then I was shocked to receive the award when up against two other amazing coaches of sport in the area. There are so many people out there giving of their time and experience to help promote sport that it is a shame they can’t all receive an award. There are so many people involved in any sport from the coaches and assistants, to the parents who get involved in coaching themselves or join the committee or become team managers . They all help to make my life easier.”
Tim Penney, of Yeovil, lost his mum to cancer and his brother struggles with mental illness. Tim has also battled mental illness for his entire life. Despite this, he has been a rock for his family - helping to look after his mum, his brother, and then having to be there for his father to lean on. Despite all of this Tim’s first thoughts are always of other people, and of charitable work. He regularly organises a number of small charity events and fundraisers each year and the heart behind them is always pure. For that reason he was chosen as the Caring Hero. He said: “I was so proud to receive the Award. It was such an honour and I was so grateful to everyone who put my name forward. It was such a shock and surprise as I never thought it would be my year to win, as it seemed the competition was so high. I think these Awards are such a good idea as there are so many more people more deserving that need to be recognised for all the good work they do.”

The Western Gazette Business Awards highlight the strengths and achievements of commercial ventures in south Somerset and west Dorset. The entrepreneurial talent in this area really is worth shouting about – and that’s exactly what these awards aim to do. In our role as an ambassador for what our communities have to offer, we feel it is essential to celebrate the business achievements that go so far to support and strengthen our economy Each award gives a locally based company the opportunity to become closely associated with the initiative by sponsoring a specific award and being very much part of this prestigious event.
What winning a Western Gazette Business Award means to us
Paul Giles of PG Security said: “Winning the Small Business of the Year was a great achievement for our company. Since set up in 2000 we have strived to offer our customers great customer service and have built up a loyal customer base and it was great to achieve recognition for this in front of other local businesses. The awards night was a real boost to my staff and really went down well. We are proud to display the awards in our office and use it on our marketing and vehicles. We can now promote our business as Award winning PG Security
Richard James of Solicitors Title won Best Website last year. He said: “Our expansion into Somerset last year (opening a second office in Yeovil) meant that we needed to get ourselves known quickly; developing a new website had always formed a key part of our marketing strategy so to be recognised for our efforts, as winners of the Best Business Website Award, itself being a new category in 2014, was a real accolade. “Given the importance, these days, of a successful online presence, it’s helped us to showcase the fact that we are at the forefront of our industry and certainly the coverage we’ve received and the exposure from the awards’ night itself, has proved to be really beneficial. Many local businesses would miss out on such important recognition were it not for the Western Gazette holding these awards, and therefore we should be grateful as local businesses, that they take the time and trouble to do so.”
Stephanie d’Albiac Reay, acting director of BNI Ivel Chapter, said: “BNI Ivel Chapter was thrilled to win the Networking Group of the Year award at the Western Gazette Business Awards 2014. It meant a lot to the group that after 10 years of weekly meetings and consistently passing good quality business referrals within the group that the power of our networking structure had been recognised externally. This was especially important as we recognise the importance of doing business with other local businesses thus supporting the local economy.”
Why sponsor a Western Gazette event ‘The WG awards are a great opportunity for Yeovil and South Somerset to showcase the breadth and quality of local businesses and to highlight the role of the many local entrepreneurs who, with their creative ideas and dedication, drive forward the economic success of the region. Old Mill advises many local businesses and their owners to help them achieve their full potential and ambition and we believe they deserve the opportunity for the recognition the awards provide. Our involvement with the awards places us at the heart of the local business community’. Craig Howes - Old Mill Accountants
Objectives of event sponsorship These days it is not enough just to be a fantastic employer or deliver the best products or services, all businesses have a corporate social responsibility to support and work for the good of their local community. Through our awards we hope that you will join us in meeting our responsibilities and at the same time fulfil your own. The added exposure you will receive as part of this event will compliment your existing advertising and communication strategies and raise your company profile within our community. We do hope you agree that this is a fantastic initiative that will benefit not only your business but the businesses that have achieved great things and deserve our support and recognition.
Benefits of Sponsorship The Western Gazette reaches over 71,000 people every week in Somerset and Dorset and over 10,000 people daily online. Exposing your business to a wide cross section of the community and affirming your brand values with valuable stakeholders in your business.
