WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE PASSOVER FALLS IN THE MONTH OF APRIL
this year, and when I think about this season, it causes me to reflect on some of my favorite moments. Twenty years ago—just after the fall of the Soviet Union—my wife, Bonnie, and I lived in a village almost an hour outside of Odessa, Ukraine. We were there launching the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute and our goal was to reach the Jewish people there with the gospel of Jesus. Our students were adjusting to life after communism in the Soviet

Union, which was full of discrimination and oppression for the Jewish people. They had suffered greatly, and their Jewish heritage wasn’t something they were used to celebrating. If anything, many Jews in the Soviet Union would keep quiet. So there Bonnie and I were, two Texans who came in during a time when the Jewish people in that region were experiencing a restoration. It was thrilling to see these students celebrate the Passover Seder (the traditional feast that marks the beginning of the 7-day holiday) for the first time in their lives. Spring in Ukraine is still quite cold, and because the electricity was unreliable, we had several Passover Seders in very chilly conditions. Everyone

had coats on and we could see our breath, but they became some of my warmest memories. As the pastor of Jewish Ministries at Gateway, I’m so grateful our church is committed to bringing the gospel to the Jewish people. It isn’t common to see a church embrace both Christian and Jewish traditions. At Gateway, we don’t believe they conflict with each other. Rather, appreciating Jewish traditions has a way of making our Christian faith come alive in a new way. Learning about the Jewish roots of our Christian faith can seem overwhelming at first. I want to encourage you to read Pastor Greg Stone’s article about Passover, its rich tradition, and its history (page 16). You’ll also enjoy reading an excerpt from Pastor Robert’s new book Frequency (page 12). Did you know God is speaking to us all the time? This new book teaches us how to hear His voice. You’ll also be amazed at how Gateway is using technology to advance the kingdom of God around the world (page 8). I’m so excited about everything going on at Gateway this month! I hope this issue of Gateway Life encourages and inspires you as we celebrate Passover and all Jesus has done in our lives.

GATEWAY'S MAKING A WORLDWIDE IMPACT MAY 31–JUNE 1, 2008, was a groundbreaking weekend for Gateway Church. With much anticipation, we launched something that would dramatically change the reach of Gateway’s ministry. For the first time ever, anyone could visit the Gateway website and watch weekend services live! With the click of a mouse, people around the world invited Gateway into their homes, cars, hotels, planes, hospital rooms, families, and small groups. Online streaming has allowed those who travel, are ill, or live outside of the Metroplex to share in the powerful worship and dynamic messages we experience on a weekly basis. We didn’t leap into this technological advancement because we like the way we look on camera but because we adamantly believe in technology as a tool for advancing God’s kingdom. Pastor Robert has often referred to our cameras as missionaries, transporting God’s Word to places we can’t always be. With this thought in mind, the cameras suddenly become more than machines, they become ambassadors. People across the world gather in homes to watch the services, and entire churches are now incorporating Gateway’s live service streaming into their church’s annual sermon schedule! Some may consider it an unconventional avenue, but our online streaming is just another extension of Gateway’s heart to give to anyone who desires to seek the Lord and learn. And it’s made an incredible impact in thousands of lives across the world. GL

Just moments before walking out onto to the risers on the platform, Pastor Kelly Allsopp, the associate worship pastor and choir leader, interrupted their excitement with an announcement. The worship team had reworked the song, and the choir would need to learn new parts in the few moments remaining. “I was shouting to them, trying to let them know what to sing.” Minutes later, the choir took their places and Rita Springer launched into the soulful gospel song. By the time the song reached its crescendo, the presence of God in the room was palpable and the congregation, which consisted In many regards, every time the Gateway Worship Choir of pastors and worship leaders from around the globe, was sings, they prepare for it as if they’re going out for battle—or on its feet. HEARING GOD’S VOICE AN EXCERPT FROM PASTOR ROBERT’S NEW BOOK FREQUENCY
WHENEVER I HEAR THIS PHRASE, “Pastor Robert, can I ask you something?” I have a good hunch what’s coming. It’s because in more than thirty years of ministry I’ve heard the same great question posed time and time again. This question is fielded by people in my own congregation, by students in university classes I’ve taught, by people who seek my counsel when I’m the guest speaker at other churches, and by pastors and leaders at conferences. The question is “How can I hear God?” Sometimes the question is phrased slightly differently: “How can I learn to hear God’s voice more clearly?” or “How can I discern God’s voice?” or “How can I tell that God is speaking to me?” But the heart behind the question is the same. People aren’t looking for burning bushes exactly.
12 APRIL 2016
But just like Moses, they want to be available if and when God speaks to them. They want to connect with God on a deeper level and understand how to hear the voice of God. I’m writing this book to help provide a fuller answer to this question. A fuller answer is needed because the explanation as to how to hear God’s voice can’t be given in a quick formula. Rather, it arises intrinsically as part of a genuine and ongoing relationship with God. If you want to hear God’s voice, then you must get to know God as a person—and this takes time and intention, much the same as it takes to know any friend. Rest assured, God has always been a speaking God, and God still speaks to us today. Fifteen times in the New Testament alone, Jesus says, “He who has ears, let him hear.”
In John 8:47, Jesus says, “He who is of God hears God’s words.” And in John 10:27, Jesus says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” Read those verses again if you need to. Note the key conversation words in each verse just mentioned: hear, God’s words, and voice. Certain Christian leaders insist that God has stopped speaking today or that God speaks only through the pages of Scripture—and if you can’t name a book, chapter, and verse, then God hasn’t spoken. Largely, they base this thinking on Revelation 22:18–19, where God warns people not to add anything to Scripture. I strongly hold to the teaching of Revelation 22:18–19, the same way I hold to all the Bible’s teaching. God warns us not to add anything to Scripture, and I agree. We can’t
add to Scripture. We must not add to Scripture. And yet Scripture indicates that God still speaks. So we must reconcile these two truths. Perhaps the very terminology God speaks creates the tension in the first place. So we need to define what we’re talking about. There’s the work of God that we call inspiration—where God guided men to write Scripture, with the result the same as if God had written it. And then there’s the prompting of the Holy Spirit for conviction, guidance, assurance, and wisdom. Both of these works of God are classified under the overall umbrella of God speaks, but these works are not the same. When the Holy Spirit led me to start Gateway Church where I’m senior pastor today, I very much heard God speak to my heart about the matter.
GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM 13
“IF YOU WANT TO HEAR GOD’S VOICE, THEN YOU MUST GET TO KNOW GOD AS A PERSON.” Yet just because I heard God speak, that doesn’t mean I could write down what the Holy Spirit impressed upon me and insist that I had another book of the Bible. So there are two truths to reconcile: (1) Scripture is finished. Yes. (2) And the Holy Spirit still guides and prompts and convicts and leads. Yes. It’s this second concept that I refer to in this book when I say “God speaks.” God speaks to us in our spirits. His Spirit bears witness with our spirit. God does not give us additional books of the Bible. He doesn’t speak to us audibly. We don’t hear His voice the same way we would hear someone on the telephone. Yet He still speaks.
GOD SPEAKS TO YOUR HEART Years ago my former pastor, Olen Griffing, got in trouble from the leaders of his denomination because he believed and preached that God still speaks today. The leaders formed a credentialing committee, met, and questioned
14 APRIL 2016
Pastor Olen for several hours about the matter. Finally Pastor Olen addressed the committee chairman, a pastor, and said, “You’ve been asking me questions for three hours. Please let me ask you something now.” The man nodded, and so Olen asked him, “Were you called to preach?” The man nodded again, and so Olen added, “Who called you to preach?” The man cleared his throat and said, “Well, God did.” Olen said, “Good, would you mind telling me which verse in the Bible contains your name and says that you were called to preach?” The man put his head down and said nothing. Pastor Olen summed it up: “God never says anything to our hearts that’s contrary to what is already revealed in the Bible. But in the same way he called you to preach, he continues to speak to people’s hearts everywhere. That’s how God still speaks today.” Let me simply say that it’s never my intent in this book to create dissension within the Christian community. In fact, I’d say most of us are on the same page already. We sometimes just use different terminology like Olen did with his credentialing committee. The spirit of unity in the body of Christ is what I want to champion. Both the Old and New Testaments clearly describe God as a speaking God. The real task—and wonderful opportunity—is for us to learn to hear His voice. That’s what I want to turn our attention toward because that’s my burden for all Christians everywhere. We need to know that God still speaks to His children today, and we need to know how to listen to Him and then respond accordingly. I want every believer to have an intimate, ongoing, and passionate relationship with Jesus Christ so that we will all love and serve and follow His voice. Friends, the good news is that we don’t need to go through life blindly. We don’t need to rely on our own understanding. That truth that God still speaks today offers us hope and reassurance and confidence. You can learn to hear God! ZACH & SIMEON NEESE’S
“LIVING WATER” by Katie Smith
With six homeschooled kids and most of them musically inclined, it’s easy to say that days in the Neese household are hectic and loud. Yet in all the noise, it’s hard to miss fifteen-year-old Simeon Neese plunking away at their piano in the living room. Even though the word “piano” technically means “soft,” Simeon plays to be heard. Not too long ago, his dad, Pastor Zach, noticed Simeon playing a particular melody over and over again. “Simeon had been experimenting with writing his own melodies for about a year,” He says. “He was playing this riff in the living room, and I just started singing with him.” Over the course of a few weeks, father and son created something special. “I’d recently been thinking about how the Holy Spirit both satisfies and initiates hunger and thirst at the same time,” Pastor Zach says. “And I wanted to somehow communicate that with more than just words.” Like two connected puzzle pieces, he found the outlet for his words in Simeon’s piano melodies. As they began to develop the song, it became clear they were united in what they wanted to communicate. “I want the church to have a deep desperation for the presence of God,” He says. “I don’t want them to have the ‘between-meals-watching-your-favorite-sitcomI-need-something-to-munch-on’ kind of hunger but the
‘I’m-going-to-die-unless-I-have-God’ kind of hunger.” So he and Simeon sought to create a song that nurtured that kind of hunger. They sat down at the piano and discussed the lyrics as Simeon played. “I’d ask him, ‘How does this lyric feel?’ ‘Does that feel genuine?’” Pastor Zach says. “And he would tell me if he felt something was good or if two lyrics could be mashed together to be better.” The process was special but different from songwriting sessions he’s had with his family in the past. “I’ve written songs with all my kids and as a family, but this was the first time I sat down and collaborated with just one of my kids,” He says. It was such a success that when preparing the song for this year’s devotional album, he and Simeon joined forces once again to record the vocals and piano in the studio. It was a sweet time for this father and son; but unfortunately, Pastor Zach’s allergies got in the way. “I couldn’t sing,” he says with a laugh, “I was praying, ‘God, please let me sing this song!’ but we couldn’t get a good recording.” So he ended up bringing in his good friend Cody Carnes at the last minute. Although Pastor Zach didn’t get a chance to sing on the recording, he was thrilled with how it all turned out. What resulted from his time with Simeon was a deep song that calls up a desire for more of God—exactly what he prescribed for the church. “I’m not interested in writing a good song,” he says. “I’m interested in writing songs that change people’s worlds. And there’s something about this song that just makes me want to jump out of my skin suit and straight into heaven.” GL Zach Neese is the worship pastor at Gateway’s North Fort Worth Campus. “Living Water” is on The God I Never Knew: Songs from Gateway Devotions and is available at the Gateway Bookstore and iTunes.

PASSOVER Remembering Jesus’ sacrifice and His return by Pastor Greg Stone
16 APRIL 2016
S
SOME OF MY EARLIEST FAMILY MEMORIES happened during the Passover Seder meal at my grandparents’ home. The Seder meal marks the beginning of the eight-day holiday. I can remember playing on the floor next to the dinner table while everyone else was still sitting at the table, and my grandmother would say, “Twenty years are like nothing.” I marveled when she said that. Today, I’m amazed that Passover not only reminds me of those childhood memories—it reminds us of things that happened 3,500 years ago. The Old Testament tells us that Egypt had enslaved the nation of Israel for 400 years. Then, God called to Moses from a burning bush. He told Moses to appear before Pharaoh and tell him, “‘Let my people go that they may worship Me.’” Pharaoh refused, and God sent a plague that turned the Nile River into blood. Pharaoh still didn’t repent, so God sent a second plague of frogs followed by a third plague of gnats. There was a fourth plague of stinging horseflies, and the plagues continued. During the ninth plague the sun did not shine for three days, and consequently, Pharaoh told Moses he would die if he appeared before Pharaoh again. That was the event that brought the final plague. God told the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb. They were to apply the lamb’s blood to the door of their house. The blood was applied to the two side posts and the upper frame of the door. In other words, the blood was applied to the doors in the form of a cross. That night, the Lord “passed over” Egypt. This is where the word “Passover” comes from. Every house that was marked by the blood of the lamb was safe. Any house that was not marked by blood suffered the tenth plague. In those houses the firstborn sons died. That tenth plague humbled Pharaoh who lost his firstborn too. He let the Jews go free. That was on the 14th day of the first month on the Jewish calendar. Let’s skip ahead 1,500 years to the Last Supper, which took place on Passover. Jesus gathered with His disciples in the upper room and used the traditional, unleavened matzah bread along with the Passover cup to establish communion. Every time we receive communion we are reminded of what Jesus did at His Last Supper on Passover. After Jesus finished His Last Supper, He left the upper room and was arrested, crucified, and killed. Jesus actually died on Passover. In Moses’ day, the firstborn of Egypt died on Passover while the firstborn of Israel was protected. In Jesus’ day, the Firstborn of God died on Passover so that you would be protected. After Jesus drank the Passover cup at the Last Supper, He told His disciples, “I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:29). Jesus was saying
He would celebrate the Passover by drinking the Passover cup with His followers when the kingdom comes. Passover not only points us back to Jesus’ death on the cross but it also points us forward to the Second Coming. This is why it’s so important that we continue to celebrate Passover today. The Apostle Paul explained communion similarly. In 1 Corinthians 11:26, he said, “As often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” This shows that Passover isn’t just a Jewish tradition but rather a way for Christians to anticipate that Jesus is coming again.
In Moses’ day, the firstborn of Egypt died on Passover while the firstborn of Israel was protected. In Jesus’ day, the Firstborn of God died on Passover so that you would be protected. This year Passover starts on Friday, April 22, and Jewish people, along with many Christians, around the world will celebrate that evening just as they have for thousands of years. Even if you’re not familiar with Jewish customs, I encourage you to celebrate Passover. Whether you discuss the significance of Passover with your family over dinner or you attend Gateway’s Passover Seder event, this holiday is a great opportunity to begin a meaningful family tradition of remembering Christ’s sacrifice and looking forward to His return. GL Join us on April 1 at the Southlake Campus as Pastor Robert leads Gateway’s Messianic service. For more information on Gateway’s Passover Seder on April 22, visit jewish.gatewaypeople.com.

ACTIVITIES
APRIL FOOLS’ DAY! In honor of April Fools’ Day, we’ve compiled a list of some easy and fun pranks! Be sure to get permission and help from a parent or guardian to successfully pull off these pranks.
FOGHORN CHAIRHORN This one only works on an office chair, but it packs a wallop! Tape an air horn underneath the chair so that when someone sits down, the chair sinks and sets off the air horn.
IN YOUR FACE This one requires some time, so make sure the person whom you are pranking will be gone for a little while. Print out or photocopy a ton of pictures of someone (preferably a boss, family member, or silly celebrity) and tape them all over everything in an office space or bedroom.
GETTING MAIL, HIDDEN DRAGON This one is super simple! Place a toy lizard or dragon in your mailbox and ask a friend or family member to get the mail. Have your cell phone ready to capture them jumping out of their skin— preferably in slo-mo!
28 APRIL 2016
SPIDEY SENSE This one is sure to get some fun reactions! Loosely tape translucent string or fishing wire across a doorway several times to make it look like a spider web. (Tip: Make sure the door opens away from the string.) Then wait for someone to open the door and run into the string!
POST-IT PAINT JOB This might take some time, but it’s good fun! Buy a bunch of colored Post-It notes and decorate someone’s car—just make sure it’s not too windy out!
MAY-NO! Disclaimer: This is not recommended for those with a weak stomach. Buy a dozen donuts. Use a knife tip to make a couple holes in each side of the donut. Put mayo in a baggie, snip off one small corner, and pipe it into the holes. Stand donuts on their side in the box, so they look like cream-filled donuts. (This also works with donut holes.)
BEZOLD ACTIVITY
This is an optical illusion called the Bezold Effect that will be sure to have you double-checking your eyesight!

First off, I’m happy to see that so many of you are enjoying the new streaming of our services online ...
WHITE COLLAR WAS A POPULAR TV SHOW that focused on the relationship between FBI Agent Peter Burke and the smooth talking, international art thief and forger Neal Caffrey. What began as a cat-and-mouse game evolved into a parable of trust when Neal became a criminal informant for the FBI, and a tense, but genuine, friendship emerged. While entertaining, this show also displayed real truths about perceptions and relationships. During one episode, Neal is in Peter’s custody, and Peter admits to him that he forgot about his upcoming 10-year wedding anniversary. Peter wonders aloud what he should get his wife, and Neal jumps in to help, agreeing that flowers and chocolate aren’t going to cut it. The following scene ensues: Neal: “What makes her feel alive?” Peter: “I’m drawing a blank.” Neal: “How could you not know? When you were chasing me, you knew my shoe size and what time I woke up in the morning.” All too often, we make the same mistake as Peter. We wake up one day with the sinking feeling that we don’t know what’s really important to our spouse, sibling, parent, child, or friend, because we were so preoccupied with something else that we forgot to pay attention to the ones we love. And it took a convicted con man to remind Peter about the difference between a compulsory anniversary gift and a thoughtful, meaningful gift from the heart. Let’s break it down even further: How many of us know movie lines or the ins and outs of baseball stats more than words spoken straight from heaven? How many of us know how our boss likes his coffee but not what really grieves Jesus or delights Him? Sometimes we forget that our relationships—with our friends and family as well as God—require the same level of intentionality and passion that we bring to our careers or hobbies. Friendship is more than just occasionally liking a status on Facebook or a pic on Instagram. Your marriage is far more than just living under the same roof together. And the Christian life is so much more than just volunteering, bringing a friend to church, or dutifully having drive-thru quiet times; it’s about actively, intentionally pursuing and discovering the heart of God in all we do.
“‘But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.’” Matthew 6:33

PROFILE
marry so he could support us in prayer. Apparently, a couple years earlier, he was on the platform at church one Sunday and had his eyes closed during worship, and the Lord said to him, “That’s who Adana’s going to marry.” So he opened his eyes, and Craig (my husband) was the only man at the altar. So he said to the Lord, “Um, Craig’s engaged to someone else!” and the Lord said, “You asked to know first.” So my dad knew the whole time that we were going to get married! I HATE TO SHOP. I’m so not the stereotypical woman. I just dread it, unless it’s for something like office supplies. My administrative assistant bought file folders the other day, and I was like, “Oh, I just love these!”
ADANA WILSON ADANA WILSON IS THE PASTOR OF ADULT MINISTRIES AT THE FRISCO CAMPUS. SHE AND HER HUSBAND, CRAIG, HAVE THREE TEENAGE BOYS: CHRISTIAN, CALEB, AND JOEL. AS A FAMILY WITH THREE TEENAGE BOYS, we buy a lot of groceries. Our grocery bill is just atrocious. I had the organization of the food aisles at my local Walmart all typed out and saved on my computer, and I’d print it out and circle the things I wanted. It was great until they would move where things were located, and then it would make me crazy! What revolutionized my life was Walmart’s online ordering option. I always joke that I’ll have to pursue inner healing and freedom ministry if they ever take it away! I’M VERY COMPETITIVE. I have all boys, and I love to beat them at anything—bowling, Monopoly, UNO, dominos. On vacation about two years ago, we had a Monopoly game that went on for six hours, and I won (which was pretty much the most important
30 APRIL 2016
thing). None of my boys have the competitive gene though. They are all very athletically gifted, but not competitive. I’m the one who sits apart from the family for all the kids’ baseball games. They had me keep the scorebook for all the games because it was a reason for me to sit away from them and be nice. I LOVE SPORTS. My parents are from Houston, so my favorite teams are Houston teams, especially the Houston Astros. My allegiance and love of sports comes from my dad. Growing up, we actually weren’t allowed to root for the Cowboys. Even their name was considered a dirty word! MY HUSBAND WAS ENGAGED TO SOMEONE ELSE when I met him. We all went to church together. They broke up shortly after I met him, and he came to my house and rang my doorbell looking for my dad who was a pastor. He wanted to ask my dad to mentor him, but my parents weren’t there that day. We ended up talking instead. At the time, he was thinking he would never get married, so we just remained friends for about a year before we started dating. We got married two years later. THE NIGHT BEFORE WE GOT MARRIED, my dad told us a story. I knew he had prayed for years that he would be the first to know whom I was going to
I’M ORGANIZED TO THE EXTREME. People come in my house and say, “Oh, it’s so clean.” But it’s not that things are clean, it’s that things are put away and organized. My pet peeve is when people don’t put things back. Like the throw pillows or blankets on the couch—I’m okay if my kids use them but then put them back! MY HEART BEATS FOR GATEWAY GROUPS. I’m really passionate about them—the connectivity, the belonging, the community—and we have several really cool groups at the Frisco Campus. We have a quilting group that makes quilts for women’s abuse shelters and prays over the quilts before donating them. We have a car enthusiast group that brings old and unique cars to the campus, and we have a Pink group that always does something fun and crafty after meetings, like they learn how to make homemade tortillas or wreaths or candles. I love Gateway’s openness and flexibility with groups, so there really is something for everyone. WHEN I THINK ABOUT the upcoming Pink Impact conference and 10,000 women gathering in one place, I get so excited for the roar of worship. There’s something sweet when an army of women come together in worship and are intentional about seeking the Lord. I can’t wait!
