We went to a second group, and they had great snacks. They had homemade guacamole and fresh salsa, so we attended a few more times. But the “car conversation” soon ensued, and we realized that while these folks were really terrific, loved God, and were so nice to us, they were not our tribe. So, after a teensy bit of cajoling and encouragement, I convinced Boyd to go once more, to a third new group. (He may not be as outgoing as I am.) We found them! The people that got us. They were so easy to laugh with, and their stories made total sense to us. We still meet today; they have become closer than family. They know the good, the bad, and the ugly about us. SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO, my husband, Boyd, and I moved from Missouri to They have walked with us through the storms of life, health scares, crises, and Texas. We had been in a small group there and loved them like family, and grief, and we’ve celebrated and shared kids’ weddings, new babies, promotions, we did not relish the idea of trying to and more. They are the first ones I call find another group when we arrived to share good news and the first ones in our new church home. But once we settled in, we attended our first group. I call for prayer. “The night before school started last year, we decided to have a special dinner to encourage the kids before they started their school year. We set the table with sparkly placemats and nice plates, and then I made these little cards with their names on them and wrote down encouraging words like ‘creative,’ ‘happy,’ ‘clever,’ ‘great sister,’ ‘caring,’ ‘includer,’ ‘thoughtful,’ and ‘leader.’ And we spoke those words over them. At the end, we saw how much they loved it. In fact, Molly Kate still has her little card because it was that important to her. She and Levi still encourage each other often using the words we gave them. We saw how much this impacted the kids, and we are definitely going to continue doing this.”

However, many of them kept praying for me and talking to me. Finally when I was 17, I decided to receive Christ. I kept it a secret from my parents, but after I became more
involved in ministry at my church, I had to tell them. While it was painful for them, one day my mom came to church to hear me preach. At the end of service, she had tears in her eyes and said, ‘I know this is what you are called to do.’ Now I have a beautiful wife and two children who know Jesus, and it all happened because people continued to pray for me.”

HOW DID YOU BECOME A CHRISTIAN?
I
was always the shy girl and being popular was a huge desire in my high school years. I made poor decisions that changed the way people perceived me. I still attended church and, unknown to my parents, was living a double life. I still believed in God and Jesus, but my actions on the weekends didn't show that belief. Finally, in my senior year of college, I knew I needed to get away so the next year I went to graduate school 1,500 miles away in Texas. Even though I wasn't in tune with God's voice, I knew He was leading me here. I started going back to church and building my relationship with God, and I met my husband. Today we are stronger than ever in our faith. Gateway NRH is our home church and we love it! I am convinced that I am where I am today because of prayer and the generational blessings thanks to my godly family members.”

Years ago, before I was in ministry, I worked for my dad in the appliance business. My job for years was delivering appliances—refrigerators, washers, dryers, and more—all over the Texas Panhandle. There was a large house in the wealthier part of Amarillo and I didn’t like making deliveries there. The father of the family was mean and verbally abusive to his wife and children. I felt so sorry for them. The kids would try to come around us just to be around friendly people. Then the father would tell them, “Get away from them!” and they’d scurry off. There was a lot of spiritual darkness there. A few days after making a delivery there, we delivered a refrigerator to a very small, wood-frame house in one of the poorest areas of town. A little 70-year-old man opened the door, and as we took out the old refrigerator, he and his wife said, “Thank you, old refrigerator for being such a wonderful part of our family for all these years!” When we brought the new refrigerator in, they were dancing cheek-to-cheek, celebrating their new appliance. I sat in the truck in front of their house and thought, I want to be like those people. The rich family in the other part of town was miserable, but there in that small house, the people were as happy as they could be over a new refrigerator. And it wasn’t even a very good model! What I learned that day is how critically important it is to choose the right attitude each day. In fact, I believe it’s our attitudes—not our circumstances—that determine our happiness.
So what does it look like to be a happy person? To get a better understanding, let’s look at some truths about attitudes.
4. GOD REWARDS GOOD ATTITUDES AND DISCIPLINES BAD ATTITUDES.
James 4:6 says, “‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’”Do you think pride and humility are attitudes? 1. WE CHOOSE OUR ATTITUDES. In the Greek, the word translated to “resists” means to set yourself in battle Viktor Frankl was a Jew in the formation against. In other words, Auschwitz concentration camp in you’re not going to get anywhere with a World War II. His wife, mother, and brother were all killed by the Nazis, prideful attitude. However, James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves in the sight but in the middle of that concentration camp he decided, I will be happy. I will of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” not hate the Nazis. Similarly, Hebrews 5. GOD’S WORD IS A GREAT 12:2 says it was a “joy that was set ATTITUDE INDICATOR. before Him” to endure the cross. If Jesus could face the cross and Viktor One of the most critical instruments Frankl could be in Auschwitz with joy in an airplane is the attitude indicator, and love, we can always choose to walk which tells the pilot if the plane’s nose is up, down, or level. Without it, it’s easy in joy and love. for a pilot to become disoriented in bad 2. ATTITUDES ARE NOT CAUSED BY weather, and if they barely dip a wing, PEOPLE OR CIRCUMSTANCES. they’ll fly in a circle to the ground. In Have you ever thought to yourself, many ways, the Bible is the attitude If my circumstances were different, indicator of our life. When we’re going I would have a better attitude? Of course, through a tough time, we can’t rely on that statement is false. Take Adam and our emotions to help determine our attitudes—we have to rely on the truth Eve. They were two perfect people in of God’s Word. paradise and they had bad attitudes. However, in Acts 16, Paul was in prison having just been beaten with rods, but he was singing hymns to God. The truth is, we can overcome any circumstance by choosing the right attitude. 3. HAPPINESS IS A CHOSEN ATTITUDE, NOT A STATE OF BEING.
There are people who are always happy regardless of what’s happening in their lives. And then there are people who are always unhappy regardless of what’s going on. One of my favorite sayings outside the Bible comes from Dennis Waitley, and I think he demonstrates this idea perfectly: “Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn, or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.”
WE CAN OVERCOME A N Y C I R C U M S TA N C E BY CHOOSING THE R I G H T AT T I T U D E . Long ago, I realized if I’m going to make it, I’m going to have to make it through my attitude. I’m not the most gifted, talented, or most athletic, but I have the best attitude. One of my favorite sayings is, “A calm sea never produced a good sailor.” In other words, an easy life never produced a good human. We have to regularly remind ourselves that everything we go through prepares us to be stronger for the next thing we go through. I want to encourage you to choose a right attitude every day, you’ll be much happier in the long run. GL GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM 9

ASK A PASTOR GATEWAY PASTORS ANSWER YOUR DIFFICULT QUESTIONS
What Is Presbytery? by PASTOR ROBERT
W
E’VE HAD PRESBYTERY SERVICES AT GATEWAY FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, and it’s one of my favorite times of the year!
The word presbytery comes from the Greek word presbuterion, which means body of elders. This is why we bring in a group of elders (pastors and teachers) from both inside and outside of Gateway to speak prophetic words to individuals and couples. The purpose of a prophecy is to encourage and edify people, not to embarrass people or call them out on past sins. In 1983, Debbie and I attended our first presbytery service with Pastor Olen Griffing at Shady Grove Church, which is now our Grand Prairie Campus. Pastor Olen asked me to stand up and the ministers, none of whom knew us, began speaking prophetic words about me and my life. One of the things they said was, “You will do presbyteries and prophesy over people.” And within just a few years, God began using me to speak prophetic words that were so accurate and specific I could hardly believe it! Now, nearly 35 years later, many of the things I’m doing in ministry were prophesied over me that very day. Here are a few other things you need to know about presbytery.
1. It’s God speaking.
God speaks through prophecy. I’ve seen many people give their lives to the Lord, and I’ve seen others turn their lives around based on a prophetic word spoken during a presbytery service.
10 AUGUST 2017
When God wants something, He speaks. It’s how He created the earth and everything in it. So when He wants you to do something, He’s going to speak it, or in other words, He’s going to impart it to you. Paul tells Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:14, “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.”
3. It’s team ministry.
It’s not just one person giving all the words—it’s a team of ministers who have spent a good deal of time praying in advance for the individuals going through presbytery, and they’ll often write down the words God gives them. 1 Corinthians 14:29 says, “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.” There’s accountability when prophetic ministry is done in a team. The most accurate prophetic words I’ve heard have come through presbytery because God is speaking to multiple people. And it’s incredible to hear when the words coming from different people are similar. It’s confirmation the word truly came from the Lord.
It’s amazing what happens when God speaks to us! While I encourage everyone at Gateway to attend our presbytery services, I want you to know you can hear God’s voice in your own quiet time—just you and your Bible. You may need God to speak to a certain area of your life right now. If so, simply ask Him for a word and listen for Him to speak. It could change your life! GL Have a difficult question? Email askapastor@gatewaypeople.com, and look for your answer in a future issue of Gateway Life.

Discovering a New Rhythm of Life
by Pastor Thomas Miller
Every Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night (basically any time the doors were open), my dad and mom would usher my sister, Jodi, and me into our family car, and we’d make our way to a little Assemblies of God church. Although I spent a lot of time in church, I didn’t truly and fully give my life to Christ and fall deeply in love with Him until after I was away from home and attending West Virginia Tech. In my junior year of college, an immediate transformation took place inside of me. The difference was like night and day, and everyone around me noticed it. I started looking for ways to get involved at the small church near my college. From playing piano and singing on the worship team to serving as a youth leader, I wanted to help out in any and every way I possibly could. As a baby Christian, I thought that if I could just work hard enough for God, maybe He’d feel like the price He had paid for me was somehow worth it. Not until later, when I had matured in my faith and grown in my relationship with God, did I begin to comprehend the depth of His love. I realized that serving Jesus isn’t about making up for what I lack. It’s about something so much more. I love how Pastor Robert explains why each of us needs to be serving. He says: “God hasn’t called you to be a reservoir; He’s called you to be a river.” If you’ve ever seen water that looks polluted and has scum on top, it’s often because the water is stagnant. The most refreshing and life-nourishing water could be coming in, but if there’s nowhere for the water to go, it eventually gets contaminated. A river on the other hand always has a continual flow of water—in and out, in and out. God has designed each of us to receive from Him and then to give out of the overflow of what He’s pouring into us. That is why serving is important. Serving isn’t about what you can do for the Church—there are plenty of well-wishers and dogooders out there who end up burnt out and empty because they’re serving in a legalistic way—it’s about bringing life to your heart by walking in the role God is calling you to play in His kingdom! And when GREW UP IN CHURCH.
I
you find yourself doing the specific things God has created you to do, you’ll discover a new rhythm of life—a natural ebb and flow that infuses you with life and energy instead of weariness and stress. Here at Gateway, we want to minister to each person who calls this church home—through weekend services, classes, groups, etc.—and to give everyone an opportunity to minister to others. It’s not because we’re trying to build up Gateway Church; it’s because we’re passionate about building the kingdom of God here on earth and helping you discover your God-given purpose. When we operate as rivers, instead of reservoirs, we remain healthy and the kingdom of God grows. It’s a winwin! Who doesn’t want that? And you may be surprised at how fulfilling and rewarding serving is! When I first gave my life to Christ, I didn’t have many friends my age who loved Jesus and were as passionate about serving Him. But soon after I jumped in and started serving, I developed a close circle of friends (including my future wife, Mary Beth) unlike any group I’d ever been a part of. We encouraged each other, we challenged each other, we supported each other, we ministered and served together. There was more genuine joy in my life, and I could hear God’s voice clearer than ever before. That time profoundly changed my life and my ministry today. Through my willingness to give of my time, talent, and energy, I gained a life-giving family of close friends, and I discovered who I am called to be. You have an important role to play in building God’s kingdom. That’s why we have so many ways for you to get involved—whether it’s inside the four walls of our church or outside in our communities. I encourage you to ask God to give you a passion for a specific area of ministry where you could get involved. If every one of us at Gateway positioned our hearts toward the Church and said, “I’m all in! I want to build the kingdom of God in a greater way in my city,” we can accomplish anything together! GL

We Are Voyagers! by ERIC RODRIGUEZ

ISNEY’S MOANA TELLS THE STORY of a curious and adventurous young girl named Moana, the daughter of the village chief on the beautiful island of Motunui. The village has everything it needs to sustain a happy life, albeit a monotonous one. The entire village is content with staying on their island forever, never going beyond the shore, everyone except Moana. Moana is conflicted between her longing to answer the call of the ocean and her desire to stay on the island with her people. The ocean is mysterious and exciting, but it also fills her with fear of the unknown. Motunui is comfortable and safe, but she knows that the still, small voice inside her won’t be silenced unless she leaves. As the story goes on, we discover a secret about the villagers of Motunui. To Moana’s shock, she finds gigantic ships hidden deep within a cave on the island, and markings tell the story of their ancient voyaging ancestors. In a moment of triumph and confirmation in which her true calling is revealed, Moana shouts, “We were voyagers!” All too often, we can fall victim to the kind of passive thinking that entices Moana to stay on her comfortable island. Like Moana, many Christians hear the call of God to step out of their comfort zones and reach a specific person, people group, or region. Whether it’s taking

a ministry trip overseas or offering to pray for a stranger at the grocery store, God is calling us. Yet sometimes, we allow our fear to outweigh our obedience. Doing this for long enough can cause us to become complacent like the villagers on the island of Motunui. Open up the Bible and you’ll find story after story of ordinary people who stepped out in faith to answer God’s call and saw Him move in the most amazing ways. Our biblical ancestors partnered with God in the task of multiplication. It’s in our blood; we were voyagers! The call of God to share the gospel burns within the heart of every believer, something Jeremiah 20:9 calls “a fire shut up in my bones.” Whether you’re sailing the open seas to a foreign land or simply inviting your neighbor to church, don’t allow the fear of the unknown keep you on the shore. CHURCHWIDE
Profile
BRANDON SHOWS MALLORY AND I WERE BEST FRIENDS IN HIGH SCHOOL. We used to joke that we would be in each other’s weddings. I’d be the man of honor, and she’d be the best woman. Little did we know that nine years later we’d finally be in each other’s wedding, just in different roles! I FELT LIKE I BELONGED THE FIRST DAY I WALKED INTO GATEWAY. It was January 2009 after I graduated college. I was very broken, and I reached out to Mallory and asked her what church she went to. I came to Gateway with her one Sunday, and as soon as I walked in the doors, I felt the Lord telling me, “You’re home.” I hadn’t even given my life to Him yet, but over the course of that service, I was overwhelmed with this feeling of love that I never felt before. Later that day, after I grappled with what I experienced, I gave my life to the Lord. AFTER I GOT SAVED, I DIDN’T HAVE A LOT OF GOOD INFLUENCES. The only people I knew were my fraternity brothers and high school friends who were not exactly the people I needed in my life to begin to walk out my new faith. For a few months, all I did was go to work, come home, read my Bible, and play video games. I was lonely and didn’t know what I got myself into. Then Mallory invited me to Gateway Young Adults (what used to be called Seven), and I began to make friends with some amazing people. The Lord slowly began to replace my old, unhealthy friendships with new, thriving, encouraging ones. These friends ended up being in my wedding and are still a huge part of my life. For that reason, I want every young person to experience what I did! For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.
FAMILY Mallory, wife of 7 years. Two girls, Ellie (5) and Maddie (3), and two little boys in heaven.
EDUCATION Degree in management and marketing from Texas Tech University.
