WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE GROWING UP IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS, I always loved July because that’s when the corn grew tall. Illinois is so flat that tall corn really changed the terrain. For months, we would drive down long country roads and just see black dirt stretching out all the way to the horizon of the prairie. But in July, our same car would be hemmed in by fields of green corn as high as an elephant’s eye!

One July, my dad drove our family out west to see the national parks. Air conditioning was an option in cars back then, so we rented an air conditioner that ran on ice cubes, so we could cross Arizona’s deserts in comfort. Then we drove the length of Route 66 from my house all the way to Southern California. Those were good times with my family, and I will always treasure those moments as a gift from God. You see, God is a “good times” God. He understands the importance of family memories, and He creates seasons where we can fill our lives with great experiences and enjoy our families. I’m excited about this issue of Gateway Life because of the articles about our family here at Gateway— particularly the volunteers who serve and keep Gateway ministries running smoothly (page 8). You’ll also love hearing about a family whose tragedy turned into salvation (page 12) and

how Gateway sent relief to the tornado victims in Van Zandt County (page 14). As you read the magazine, I want to encourage you to think about your family and friends and all the ways you can spend time with them this summer. The memories I made with my family on Route 66 when I was a kid will stay with me for a lifetime. May God fill your summer with good times and great memories just like those.

ministry partner, handed out more than 9,000 meals to victims, first responders, and volunteers. • 8,500 prophetic word cards were handed out to Pink Impact attendees. 659 volunteers worked for 100+ hours during the two-day conference. • 13,000 Make Your Mark devotional books were gifted to mothers at all campuses on Mother’s Day weekend. • During April, May, and June, 321 Gateway members participated 1,090 times in the reviveTX outreach at the Dallas Campus. • 5,896 attended the Night of Worship at all campuses in June.

“I never wanted to move to Texas, especially away from my family and the beauty of the Northwest, but it was still one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made. I knew it was God. I started working at The King’s University in the fall of 2014 in the music & worship studies department. One of my weekly assignments was to oversee worship for the university’s student chapels, and that’s where I met my husband. He’s a musician and he filled in at the last minute for a chapel service. I knew then that he was special, and I remember thinking, Whoa. From that point on I began praying for him. Not ‘him for me,’ but for him as a man. I did not see him again for months. Our paths did not cross again until I began serving on the worship team at the NRH Campus where we would see each other from time to time on the weekends. Last year we went on our first date to FnG Eats in Keller. Six months later (to the day), we got married—and now we serve together as a couple! Being able to learn and lead together in ministry is truly a gift.”

“I started serving in 2009 at the Southlake Campus handing out interpretation headsets. Later, my husband, Jose, joined me and we moved to the North Fort Worth Campus. We’re working with pastors there to do even more for the Spanish-speaking community, and we now have Spanish interpretation at every service, and Jose teaches Catch the Vision in Spanish there. Also, for the last two years, we’ve overseen the Spanish ministry, and since then our team has grown to about 32 people! “A couple years ago, my friend’s mom had a baby. I got to hold him, and he was really cute, so I started asking my mom if there was anything at church where I could help with babies. I started helping in the two- and three-yearold rooms, and I was nervous at first, but it was really fun. The best is when a kid gets to know you, then the next time they come, they’ll run to you! I also volunteer with TA as a camera operator during Gateway Students. I’m one of the youngest volunteers, but it’s fun to serve in the older kids’ services. Serving helps me feel like I have two families: my real family and my church family.” GL

Can the devil hear our thoughts? by JIMMY EVANS, LEAD APOSTOLIC SENIOR PASTOR

The most important thing we can do to protect our minds from the devil’s attacks is to know the Word of God and to make it the primary means by which we measure truth and what we allow to stay in our thoughts. A mind filled with God’s Word is devil-proof and destined for freedom and victory.

OD IS OMNISCIENT and knows everything we are thinking. For example, Matthew 9:4 says, “But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, ‘Why do you think evil in your hearts?’” God knows every single thought we’ve ever had. However, the devil is not omniscient. There is no reference in the Bible to the devil having the ability to read our minds or hear our thoughts. But since the Garden of Eden, he has attempted to penetrate our minds with his evil thoughts. The first words of the devil to mankind were, “Has God indeed said ...” (Genesis 3:1). B R I D G E P O RT WORSHIP THE STORY OF WORSHIP TEAM ACADEMY’S FIRST BAND. by Daniel Hopkins

KYLE WILT HEARD THE PRISON GATE CLINK SHUT BEHIND HIM, but he wasn’t afraid. He and four friends, David Cole, Herman Theodorus, Terry Willhoite, and Karl Binger were there on a mission—to lead worship for the inmates at the Bridgeport Women’s Facility in Bridgeport, Texas. Playing together in a worship band wasn’t something they could’ve predicted only a short time before when they entered Gateway’s Worship Team Academy (WTA). After all, playing the drums was more of a hobby before Kyle started taking lessons at WTA. “I wanted to learn how to play in a worship setting,” he says, “which is less performance-based and more improvisational.” WTA’s program is designed not only to teach people the fundamentals of how to play a variety of instruments (drums, guitar, bass, keyboard, and vocals) but also to train them to be passionate worshippers. The program is comprised of 12-week semesters geared toward musicians of all skill levels from beginner to advanced. “All the guys in the band started at different levels, but we graduated at the same time,” he says. “We were at dinner after graduation and I heard the Lord tell me, ‘This is your band.’” For many people who go through the WTA program, starting a band isn’t exactly on their radar. Many are hoping for an opportunity to lead worship on a Gateway platform. And while the program is helping to develop future Gateway worship leaders, it’s greater purpose is to impact the kingdom of God. “The program is really teaching you how to live a lifestyle of worship and take it outside of Gateway,” says Kyle.

So, armed with the knowledge they’d learned in their semesters at WTA, the group of guys began to ask the question, What now? That’s when opportunity opened a heavy steel door. “I asked the guys, ‘What do you think about playing in a prison with me?’” says Kyle. After some initial apprehension, the group agreed and started the process of preparing for the gig, rehearsing at David’s house, and playing many of the songs they learned at WTA. The worship service at the prison went better than Kyle and the band expected. “Twenty of the 80 women who attended got saved,” he says. “I didn’t really tell anybody about this project. It wasn’t until later that I realized what we did was kind of a big deal.” This is what the program is all about—equipping people to lead worship in a number of venues, from their homes to the mission field, local churches, prisons, and beyond. And for Kyle and the band (called Bridgeport Worship), this is only the beginning of a new ministry opportunity. The band is in talks to lead worship at some Teen Challenge events and even plan to lead worship in churches who aren’t able to put together a full worship team of their own. “It’s turned into something I didn’t expect,” says Kyle. “I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now if it wasn’t for WTA. How a funeral was the catalyst for one family’s salvation story. by Katie Smith

WENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, SUE PIERCE HAD A VISION. Her husband, Tim, and his family were not living for Christ, and she felt extremely alone in her prayers for them. But the Lord showed her that someday Tim’s family would “fall like dominoes before His throne, from the oldest to the youngest.”

It felt like a far-off dream, especially when the victories seemed few and far between. When Tim made Jesus the Lord of his life six years ago, Sue celebrated the long-awaited transformation in his life, and now united stronger than ever, she and Tim waited and prayed for more dominoes. Then, two

years ago, they finally started seeing Sue’s vision fulfilled in a more dramatic way. Yet the catalyst for such change was the most unlikely thing imaginable: a funeral. Right before Easter weekend, Tim’s sister-in-law’s mother passed away, and the funeral service was held at the NRH Campus. The extended family was invited, including Tim’s oldest brother, JR, who, after a hurtful experience at a church when he was younger, never wanted to attend another one. As JR opened the doors to the NRH Campus, he stopped mid-step with a gasp, but he continued into the building for the funeral. The whole family was amazed by the attention and care from every Gateway person they encountered, and after the service, JR told his wife, Jill, that he needed to come back. “I didn’t recognize it then, but when I opened those doors for the first time, the Holy Spirit’s presence hit me. The Lord got my attention,” says JR. “I knew I was where I was supposed to be.” A week later, Tim and Sue invited the family to Easter services at Gateway. Every year the family made excuses why they couldn’t go, but this year was different. While some of the family was still hesitant, JR’s excitement and interest as well as Tim’s recent transformation seemed to change their minds. Twenty-two family members attended with Tim and Sue, and during the altar call, JR knew why he came back to church. “I was hanging on Pastor Robert’s every word, and when he invited people to accept the Lord and come to the front, I had this overwhelming feeling I was supposed to do that,” says JR. “I couldn’t wait to get up there!” Two of his grandkids followed him to the altar to accept Christ as well. And a round of dominoes fell. JR’s son-in-law, Jason, and his wife, Jennifer, came to Gateway on that Easter Sunday as well, and it was the first time Jason ever wanted to go back to a church a second time. “For years, I just had so many unanswered questions. Before, I would go to church with my wife, Jennifer, and the whole time I was wondering when we were going to leave,” Jason says. “But at Gateway, I felt comfortable and not judged.” Two weeks later, Jason raised his hand in a Gateway service to receive the Lord. Jennifer, who had been praying for and dreaming of this day for almost 20 years, was thrilled to finally see it happen. “Gateway was the open door to the Lord reaching my husband and my family,” Jennifer says. “What I’ve seen happen in their lives is truly amazing.” Soon after Easter, JR got baptized. His family began to see change in him, and it rippled out from there. Every

week after that, the Pierce family continued to fill a section at the NRH Campus, and by the time summer rolled around, several more Pierces gave their lives to Christ and got baptized, including Jason, who had the opportunity to baptize his two children as well. “For a while it felt like every baptism event Gateway had, somebody in our family was getting in the pool!” Sue says.

“WHAT I’VE SEEN HAPPEN IN THEIR LIVES IS TRULY AMAZING.” Now, every weekend, you’ll see at least a few Pierces sitting together during the service at Gateway NRH or serving with big smiles. JR welcomes people to the campus on a golf cart in addition to helping Jason and Jennifer prepare communion once a month. “From the moment I stepped into Gateway, I felt at ease,” says JR. “It’s like going to a family member’s house. Everyone at Gateway is family. I love to try to meet someone new each time I serve because no one is a stranger.” Sue and Tim, now a deacon, serve with their two sons as often as possible and love spending time with his family and watching them fall like dominoes before the Lord, knowing more are on their way. “There were days when I almost gave up,” Sue says. “But God answered my prayers. He moved mountains for my family. And to anyone else who is waiting for breakthrough, be encouraged: God keeps His promises.” GL

TORNADO ALLIES GATEWAY SENDS TORNADO RELIEF TO EAST TEXAS by DANIEL HOPKINS

as he begins telling their stories. “Jeanette—her house was completely destroyed,” he says. “When we arrived, she was searching for her wedding dress and her husband’s ashes, so we helped her find those things.” Matt is the director of Minuteman Disaster Response, a nonprofit organization Gateway has teamed with that brought relief after tornadoes hit Joplin, Missouri, in 2011; Moore, Oklahoma, in 2013; and neighboring Van Zandt County last May. “Al and Andrea are hay farmers,” he continues. “Their house didn’t get hit but their barn did, and the tornado scattered the debris all over his hay field, so our team went arm-in-arm across the pasture picking up every piece of debris we could find.” Matt shares more stories with a small team from Gateway at the Minuteman mobile headquarters, located in the Van Zandt County Fairgrounds. We’re standing inside a converted shipping container that functions as a high-tech office, supply storage unit, and sleeping quarters for up to 12 people. A few feet away, there is a portable restroom unit with 6 climate-controlled stalls, each with its own shower. This self-sustaining base can be set up and fully operational within 24 hours of a natural disaster. Outside, there are multiple Minuteman vehicles—one of which is a storm-chasing unit—and volunteers preparing to go search for more people who need help. So far, Matt has a list of 80 trained volunteers to call when a storm hits. Not far down the road, towers of dark smoke are visible in every direction. Property owners throw uprooted trees and broken limbs into piles to be burned. Some of the homes have been leveled completely. Thankfully, for one older couple, their house still stands but their farm is in shambles.

Broken tree limbs and debris cover the land that Dennis Rowan’s family has owned for more than 100 years. “How the house is still here, I do not know,” says Dennis, through his thick, gray beard and strong East Texas dialect. “We’re so grateful for [Minuteman’s] help clearing our property. I don’t know how we’d do it without them.” Many people in Van Zandt County can say the same thing, which is why Gateway has sent volunteers to Minuteman. The Rowans’ land is the last stop for the Minuteman crew, who are planning to pack up their basecamp and leave town later in the day (10 days after the tornadoes hit). As the community is moving into a rebuilding phase, Minuteman will ready its first responders for the next call. The tornadoes have already left the news cycle, but the damage left behind will take months for many people to repair. “We know we can’t meet everyone’s needs, but we can meet a lot of needs,” says Matt. “We’ve been able to make a big dent in the mess. FEW YEARS AGO, we had family come visit from out of town, and

they asked us to take them on a tour of AT&T Stadium (where the Dallas Cowboys play). I didn’t even know that was a “thing.” We have lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for more than 17 years and have never ventured 30 minutes away to tour the stadium. But we loved it! It was a few hours of family fun and playing on the Cowboys’ actual field. Thinking back on our day, I realized something. Have you ever noticed that we become accustomed to our surroundings? We get up, get the kids to school, go to the gym, go to work, run errands, go to church, grocery shop, and repeat. We can become robotic in our daily lives, and we generally stick to our normal activities. And then it happens—company comes to visit, and we realize we need to look outside of our norm to find fun things to do in our area. We use Google to find events and recreational places, and sometimes we revisit places as simple as the park across the street. We discover wonderful experiences that have always been available to us—we just never took the time to explore them! Did you know the same thing happens when we read the Word? A few months ago, I got a power-packed daily audio devotional called Becoming, which was created by Cari Trotter, a member of the Gateway

Dallas Campus. This devotional has become part of my morning routine. As I worked my way through the series of seven-minute teachings, I thought back to our tour of the stadium and how a devotional is like a tour, taking us out of our daily routine and giving us new insights into Scripture. It takes us to passages in the Bible we may have glazed over, in the same way our family has driven past that stadium many times without realizing the fun we could have there. I have read through the Bible many times and even taken college courses on the Old and New Testaments. After all the reading and learning I’ve done, this short morning devotional still took me to places in Scripture I hadn’t truly explored. Devotionals are powerful tools that help us meditate on God’s Word. Whether you are reading one of Gateway’s amazing devotionals or a devotional app on your phone, the benefits of having a devotional as part of your routine is like taking a life-giving tour every day! It’s an opportunity to get out, look around, and take it all in! There is so much to see! GL

JOSH MORRIS I HAD IT ALL PLANNED OUT. When I finished film school in Florida, I was going to come back and work for Gateway’s media department, but two months before graduation, my dad called me to say Gateway couldn’t hire me, which kind of killed my plan. Instead, I moved to Amarillo and started Trinity Fellowship’s video department. While there, I would run into the church’s mail girl, Hannah, almost every day. One night some mutual friends invited us both out to eat after a young adults’ service. We sat together and talked all night. I married her a few months later. I’m really glad my dad was brave enough to tell me he couldn’t hire me at Gateway. I GET TO PREACH AT GATEWAY BECAUSE OF WHO MY FATHER IS. A while ago, someone attacked my character on social media saying that the only reason I was able to stand on the platform at Gateway and preach is because of who my dad is. It was tough to hear that, especially because it seemed a little bit true to me. I always struggled with that idea, and I asked the Lord for a word about it because it was really hurtful. I asked God, “Is it true that the only reason I get to preach at Gateway is because of who my father is?” and I heard very clearly, “Yes.” And then so clearly, I heard, “I am your Father.” And I realized that where I am is because of my heavenly Father. It settled a lot of things in me. I can’t beat myself up and say I should have been someone else, all I can do is say, “This is the opportunity that God gave me, so I need to do the most with whatever He gave me.” I ENJOY SHOOTING GUNS. My Instagram page looks like a mix of tactical preparation for the apocalypse and children with puppies. That’s my life. Growing up, my dad would take us hunting all the time and it’s how I spent, and still spend, the most time with my dad. Now it’s a way for me to connect with my son and daughter too.
