WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE I CAN’T BELIEVE we’re already halfway into 2017! My son, Harrison, recently turned twelve years old, and it’s becoming more apparent to me how quickly time flies. He’s definitely becoming an adolescent, and as he enters into this new phase of life, he’s developing some personality traits that remind me of myself. He’s a passionate person who likes what he likes. Some of the things I’m passionate about outside

of ministry are music and running. For Harrison, it’s LEGO and Star Wars. We work on his elaborate LEGO sets together, but some of them take a longer time to complete because, instead of finishing them on his own when I’m not around, he’ll say, “No, I’m waiting for Dad.” I have no idea how he discerns which sets he builds on his own and which ones he wants to build with me, but I know that he wants me to be present with him. Learning how to be present hasn’t always been easy. There have been times when I’ve been emotionally and physically tired and my wife has said to me, “You’re here, but you’re not really here.” She was right, and I know there are other parents struggling to be “present” with their families after a long day. It can be difficult, but taking the time to regroup when I get home and set aside the stress of the day is worth it! Being present is the key to being the leader, husband, and father God has called me to be. If you’d like to be a better parent or spiritual leader in your home, you’ll

enjoy this issue of Gateway Life because we have an article from Pastor Zach Neese about being a good parent (page 8). You’ll also love the article about a GRP Campus member who saw a need and decided to meet it by starting a Gateway Group (page 12), and you’ll want to read about how your Heart for the Kingdom giving is going toward a much needed remodel of the NRH Campus (page 14). We’ll be able to reach more people than ever in the NRH area and it’s because of your giving. As you read this issue of Gateway Life and enter the summer season, I want to encourage you to be present wherever you are. It’s as simple as remembering that each person you meet has a high level of value, whether it be at work or at home. Take the time to disconnect from the world and connect with family.

Right after it was released, Rita Springer’s album, Battles , spent a week at No. 2 on the iTunes Christian Albums chart. • 55,624 people attended Gateway’s

Easter services, the largest recorded attendance in Gateway history. 730 people made first-time or rededication decisions, and 1,685 kids accepted Christ. • Members of Gateway’s media team were recently interviewed by NBC DFW News. The spot aired mid-April and featured our use of social media in the church! • 611 people were baptized across all campuses during our most recent water baptism weekend in late April. • 8,841 women attended this year’s Pink Impact women’s conference at the Fort Worth Convention Center. • The month of April was host to Gateway’s 47th KAIROS event since its inception. 1,170 people attended, which was the highest KAIROS attendance in Gateway history.

DANNY GRAHAM “I’d been told all my life that God’s healing didn’t happen anymore. But all that changed for me several years ago. I was diagnosed with a malignant tumor and I went home, got on my knees, and this is what I said. ‘Lord, if You have any healing left I could sure use some.’ Two days later the doctor called me and said the biopsy came back and the tumor was benign—I didn’t have cancer! He said, ‘Don’t get your hopes up, I think the results are wrong.’ I went under the knife and the pathology reports and testing showed that there was no cancer. I told the doctor, ‘Don’t feel bad. I want you to know I think you were right, but I went home and prayed, and I believe God healed me.’”

HAROLD MOORE “I’m going down an unexpected path right now with my divorce. My sister and her family have invited me to Gateway over the years and I’ve gone to some of the Christmas productions with them, but I found myself coming here for the past six or seven Sundays too. It’s so different than the church I grew up in. I went to a church in a small town south of here, and the preacher was a screamer. But Gateway is a little more modern; the music and the messages are easier to grasp and understand. I like being here too—how you can come and have a cup of coffee and look at books that are helpful. And everyone has been so nice to me. It’s been a good experience in this difficult season.”

JOSH PETREY “I used to focus more on earning money. I was working 80 to 100 hours a week and didn’t have much time for my friends. One day in 2011, I had a stroke. I was diagnosed with cancer and immediately put on chemotherapy. It was a scary time— especially when I overheard a nurse tell my sister I was going to die. However, I went into remission the next year, and I had a dream. God showed me that my relationships with people are more important than earning money. He also showed me that He’s always available to talk but I had been unavailable. It made me realize that I need to spend more time with Him. Now, my relationships are a priority and my whole life is a conversation with Him, no matter what I’m doing.”

“All my life I have only known money to be related to difficulties. If money were a horse, I feel like I have been gripping on to the reins while it drags me down the street. But after the second week of this class, I felt like I was learning to ride the horse, and now I feel like I’m starting to enjoy the ride. Parenting H O W TO R A I S E G O D LY C H I L D R E N

OR THE PAST 20 YEARS, I’ve been on a pursuit to find out how to raise godly children, and for good reason—I have six of them! One of the most fundamental things I’ve learned is it’s no one else’s job to raise my children, but it’s mine as their parent. I was a youth pastor for years, and I can tell you that simply having your children in church will not make them

8 JUNE 2017

godly people. You can’t have your kids in church enough for them to be transformed. Their schools won’t do it either. And I know our culture won’t do it! The only ones who can raise godly children are parents. And it takes more than just being godly parents. The job requires them to be priests. Your pastoral role is the most important relationship your family will ever have.

So what does it look like to be a priest in your home? 1. Priests worship God and teach others to worship God. A priest reaches up to embrace and adore God and reaches out to the world to embrace and adore them and then connects the two with each other. To teach children worship, we have to teach them how to love God and receive love from Him and how to submit to His lordship and serve him.

2. Priests are stewards of the sanctuary. When your home is a sanctuary, it’s a place where your kids can come in and be spiritually safe. It’s a place where God feels welcome. As a parent, it’s our responsibility to guard the gates of our homes. What kind of spirit do you permit in your home? My wife and I go through our house and pray, and we ask God, “What spirit do we need to get rid of?” I love when people visit our home and expect a madhouse, but when they walk in they’re greeted with a peaceful atmosphere.

3. Priests practice the fear of the Lord, not the fear of man. Our culture is concerned about every opinion but God’s, but the person who fears the Lord puts His opinion first. A priest says, “Listen, up to my driveway, you can have whatever opinion you want. But once you get to the driveway, God’s opinion reigns, and what He says goes!” Many times this means my opinion stops at the driveway too, because my house is submitted to Jesus and His opinion.

4. Priests teach their families about holy relationships. My oldest son has been praying for his future wife since he was three years old. We’ve been praying for her too—that she would be godly and have priestly parents. Part of my job as a priest is to protect my children’s hearts. If they fall in with ungodly people, it’s my job to discipline them and say, “God’s not cool with this, and I’m not cool with this.”

5. Priests view obedience as worship. We have a saying in our house: “Obey, right away, every day.” Being a priest means we have to model this behavior for our kids. When God tells me to do something, I need to obey right away so my children learn. John 14:15 says, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” My children need to know when I love God, I demonstrate this love through joyful obedience.

6. Priests help their spouses love Jesus more. The best way to help your spouse in this area is by modeling it for them. Rather than forcing them in their relationship with Him, love them into it by being a good example. A priest’s love for God is infectious! Being a priest in your home can be challenging, and it’s easy to make mistakes. (Trust me, I’ve made many!) But thankfully there’s grace, and when we fail in any of these areas, God can redeem our mistakes, help us turn our homes into sanctuaries, and help our families understand how to have a relationship with Him. 1. The Work of the Holy Spirit The gifts of the Holy Spirit are distributed to men and women alike, for His greater purpose. If a woman has the gift of teaching or prophecy or pastoring, we believe she should have the opportunity to use these gifts to encourage fellow believers and advance God’s kingdom. (Acts 2:1–2; 1 Corinthians 12:7–11, 27–28; Joel 2:28–29.)

My wife and I have been discussing women’s roles in the Church. She believes it’s okay for women to be pastors, but I have been taught the opposite! Do I have an incorrect understanding of God’s truth? by PASTOR MALLORY BASSHAM

HE ROLE OF WOMEN IN MINISTRY is an ongoing debate in the Church today. As a woman pastor, this is nothing new to me. I have experienced my fair share of challenges because of the varying opinions about my role. But the leadership of Gateway strongly believes there is biblical evidence that a woman can serve, teach, and lead as long as she lives a biblically qualifying life and is submitted to the leadership above her. With the exception of the senior pastor and elders (positions Gateway reserves solely for men according to 1 Timothy 3:1–7, Titus 1:5–9, and Ephesians 5:23), women may function in all other ministry and leadership positions at Gateway. In my pastoral role, I have been able to offer viewpoints and understanding that were crucial to successful resolutions as a result of my uniquely female empathy or emotional connection. Women are a beautiful complement to men. God made us each different and to need one another, at home and in ministry.

2. Cultural Context One of the most popular verses cited to keep women from ministry is 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 (kjv) in which Paul says, “Let your women keep silent in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak ….” A closer look shows this was a time when women were disrupting that particular public assembly of believers, and Paul was simply attempting to keep order within that specific church body. Other writings from Paul describe how women should pray and prophesy in public (1 Corinthians 11:5), so Paul must have meant something different in this passage than banning women from ministry. 3. Female Ministers in the Bible Miriam, Deborah, and Huldah were strong and vital to God’s work in the Old Testament. Paul, in the New Testament, frequently referred to the contribution made by women, including Phoebe, Euodia, and Syntyche (Romans 16:1; Philippians 4:3). In addition, Priscilla and Lydia hosted churches in their homes, and Priscilla is always listed before her husband. With all that said, I understand your angst in dealing with this. However, I invite you to allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart and bring you revelation as you read the Word. I pray this brings clarity to you. May God richly bless you. “THE GARDEN” by Katie Smith

WHEN KARI AND HER YOUNGER SISTER, KRIS, WERE LITTLE GIRLS,

they imagined a day when they’d be able to share the wonder and excitement of being pregnant at the same time. So when this dream came true, they were ecstatic! They celebrated and laughed with each other as they talked about nausea and baby names and having to wake up in the middle of the night to eat. But the dream ended when seven and a half months into her pregnancy, Kris and her husband, Michael, lost their baby girl, James Ivy. It shook their entire family to the core, and Kari struggled to balance her overwhelming sadness and grief while remaining present and expectant for her own baby. “It was uncharted waters. I’ve never experienced a season where I had to learn to grieve and celebrate at the same time,” Kari says. “I spent a lot of time crying and questioning God. If I didn’t feel my son move in my belly for a while, I would be overcome with fear. And when I finally had him, it was difficult to hold him knowing my sister couldn’t hold her baby too.” It was during this vulnerable season that Kari began to write, not only for her and her family’s healing but also for anyone who was processing a traumatic experience, questioning God, or waiting for prayers to be answered. “Anytime I walk through something difficult, I always want to be able to turn around and share what God has done out of it,” she says. She took all her questions and prayers and poured them into each word, each note, and each song of her newest project, The Garden. About four months after James Ivy went to heaven, Kari and her husband, Cody, purchased a home in Nashville. As spring approached, they were surprised to find a beautiful

flower garden blooming in their new backyard. And ivy was everywhere. Kari stood in the garden, holding her son, Canyon, with tears rolling down her face. “It was one of the sweetest spiritual experiences of my entire life,” she says. “I felt so seen, so cared for. God used His own creation to bring me and my family back to life.” Her sister and brother-in-law named their baby girl not knowing God would later use her name to heal them in their grief. Out of that moment, Kari wrote the title track of her newest album, “The Garden,” where she sings, “Then I saw the garden / hope had come to me.” Every lyric of the song points to God’s faithfulness in bringing hope and healing to their family. In a very real way, Kari’s family learned that God “will stop at nothing / to heal my broken soul.” And in a delicate yet powerful bridge, she sings, “Faith is rising up like ivy / reaching for the light. Hope is stirring deep inside me / making all things right. Love is lifting me from sorrow / catching every tear. Dispelling every lie and torment / crushing all my fears.” When Kari and her sister get together, there are still moments when they cry and grieve. “But immediately after, we are able to look at each other and say, ‘God has really moved,’” she says. “He can turn something really difficult into something truly beautiful if we open up our eyes to see it.” GL Kari would like to thank Gateway for being instrumental in her and her family’s process of grieving and healing. The Need to Lead

Is God Calling You?

NOT LONG AGO, I was standing in the lobby during a weekend service and a lady, seeing my shiny name tag, approached me with a question: “Why doesn’t Gateway have a ministry to help people who are disabled and can’t leave their homes? My other church had a ministry that took them meals.” I responded to her with a question, “Are you wanting to see people who can’t leave their homes ministered to?” She replied with a passionate, “Yes!” and told me she had been talking to friends about how Gateway needs to do something to meet this need. After a few minutes of talking, I asked her an important question: “Do you think God might be asking you to do this?” She had a puzzled look and said, “I don’t know how I would do it if He was.” I reassured her and explained, “If you and your friends are passionate about this, it sounds like you have a Gateway Group that could meet this need.” Maybe you’ve asked a similar question: Why doesn’t Gateway do this? As a staff member, I hear questions like this more often than you’d think. Someone has a passion for something, sees a need, or wants to do an activity with other attendees and will ask me why Gateway doesn’t do something. Sure, I could’ve taken her idea and said, “I’ll make sure someone on staff does something about this.” But by doing that I would rob her of the joy, opportunity, and fulfillment of doing what God put in her heart. My job in this scenario is to equip her to do the work God has called her to do. It’s what Paul’s talking about when he explains the role of pastors in Ephesians 4:12: “Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do His work and build up the church, the body of Christ.” This lady and her friends saw a need, and I’m excited to report that she is currently in the pipeline to be a group leader. One of my favorite things about Gateway is our small group structure. I love it because a group can do most any activity, curriculum, or passion its members want. The goal of every Gateway Group is to create a safe place where you can talk about life. I got involved at Gateway because I liked running and was invited to join a running group. When my group ran together, a safe place was created and over time when life’s hurdles were thrown my way, I had a place to process. I wasn’t alone.

LIVE YOUR PASSION. LEAD A GROUP. If you love to fish, you can lead a group. If you want to try new restaurants, you can lead a group. If you want to see more people serving at a food bank, you can lead a group. If you are passionate about becoming more like Jesus by studying the Bible with some trusted friends, you can lead a group. If you want to try and master underwater basket weaving with some people, you can lead a group! What’s your passion? Is there an activity, ministry, or outreach you’d like to see Gateway do? Extreme Campus Makeover Gateway NRH is next! IN NOVEMBER 2007, Gateway’s first extension campus opened in North Richland Hills with Campus Pastor Marcus Brecheen. The weekend services mirrored those at the Southlake Campus with live worship, personal ministry, and a video message from the Southlake Campus. In addition, half of the NRH Campus was created to hold a vibrant student ministry with a basketball court, a skateboard park out back, and space for games and activities. With great leaders like Pastor Marcus and current Campus Pastor Byron Copeland, the NRH Campus has operated at peak efficiency, consistently filling most of its services and serving its people whole-heartedly. Over the past few years, the campus has continued to grow and finding room for all the people has gotten tougher, yet people have continued to attend faithfully. “This campus is filled with so many incredible people who have been here since the beginning,” says Josh Hall, associate campus pastor. “And as of last month, they’re seeing Gateway’s Heart for the Kingdom giving come to fruition with the remodel of our campus.” There’s more to these updates than the campus getting new stuff. “It’s about the people. They’ve been so generous in helping Gateway build the kingdom with their giving and sweet spirits,” says Pastor Byron. “Now we’re outfitting the campus with brand-new tools to reach our community in new ways. It’s going to be electric and exciting for the whole Gateway family!” GL

THAT MAKES IT THE THIRD-LARGEST GATEWAY CAMPUS. ON AVERAGE, 900 KIDS ARE TAUGHT THE LOVE OF JESUS EACH WEEKEND.

IN 2016, AT THE NRH CAMPUS:

277 PEOPLE WERE BAPTIZED. 199 PEOPLE ACCEPTED JESUS CHRIST AS THEIR SAVIOR. 146 EQUIP CLASSES WERE OFFERED.

THE NRH CAMPUS HAS MORE EQUIP ATTENDEES PER CAPITA THAN ANY OTHER CAMPUS, EVEN THOUGH IT ONLY HAD ONE EQUIP CLASSROOM.

The updates will create more space for training and resources, visitor comfort, family security, community involvement, and better guest interactions. Here’s a full list of the upcoming renovations:

To make dropping off your kids easier and help make the whole children’s area more secure, a new classroom for fifth and sixth graders will be created. In addition, a couple of the elementary rooms (Flying Ferris Wheel and Rockn-Roller Coaster) will be completely redone to make better use of the space.

Flooring and Furniture Sometimes, after much wear and tear, floors need to be replaced. This year, all the flooring in the Auditorium and the Gateway Café will be redone to give the space a fresh, clean look. New furniture will be bought for a few of the open areas.

Updated Audio/ Visual Equipment Gateway NRH’s audio/visual system is the oldest of all the campuses and has experienced several blackouts during weekend services over the years because of inclement weather. “We pray harder than any other campus during a storm!” says Pastor Josh. The new equipment will help us provide an even better service experience for attendees and visitors.

BubbleLand BubbleLand is a play space for young children that is open on certain days of the week for families to use. “This new addition makes the campus much more of a community space for people to come in and enjoy,” says Pastor Josh.

T’S UNLIKELY THAT ANY STORY FOCUSING ON A LINGUIST as the heroine is

going to intrigue anyone other than grammar and language nerds. But add aliens, Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, a stunning soundtrack, and a twisty plotline and you’ve got an Academy Award–winning film. Arrival follows the story of Dr. Louise Banks, a world-renowned language expert who is called upon when aliens land on earth. The aliens are seemingly peaceful heptapods (they look like giant walking squid with seven legs) who communicate in a mysterious way, thus the need for a linguist. Louise enters the scene to find out what the aliens want and why they came, literally ascending into the aliens’ spacecraft to start decoding their language. She tackles the communication gap with patience, hard work, and a palpable emotion. The story is painted with a strange kind of grief as Louise battles memory flashes of a daughter she raised who falls ill and dies. What she learns while creating a tentative relationship with the heptapods is a circular, icon-based language that not only communicates emotions and full sentences in a single image but also holds the secret to time and how we perceive it. In short, the aliens gift humanity with a complex universal language that gives those who understand it the ability to see the past, present, and future all at once. Louise learns through this language

that her memory flashes are actually of a future child who she has yet to bear, and at the end of the movie, we watch her choose, regardless of the outcome she knows to be true, to still pursue a relationship with her husband and still have that child. And her knowledge of what’s going to happen makes her appreciate and treasure every moment with them. If you think about it, the heptapods’ perception of time mirrors how God views time. He’s outside of it—sees past, present, and future all at once—and He is not surprised by anything that is thrown your way. When He gives you a promise, it’s not something He’s hoping will happen, it’s something He’s already seen. He can see your promise coming to pass just as clearly as He can see you as you wait for it. And through His Word (or His language), we can view the big picture too. You see, there’s more to our stories than the “right now.” In the meantime, we can take a page out of Louise’s book and truly treasure every moment as it comes. GL

AMANDA JOHNSON I’M A CERTIFIED ENGLISH TEACHER. I love school, and I love leading, so I always thought teaching would be the perfect profession. I graduated college with a 6th–12th grade English education certificate only to learn it wasn’t for me. (I was daydreaming about other careers while sitting in the orientation for my first teaching job!) But I stuck it out for a full year and learned a ton of hard lessons about myself, how I function, and how to work really hard in a place that wasn’t super supportive. “THE OTHER LEFT HAND.” During our wedding, when the pastor asked me to place Cody’s ring on his finger, I could not figure out which hand was his left hand. It must have been the pressure of the moment, but I just decided to guess, and I guessed wrong! The pastor politely made a joke about the “other left hand.” We all laughed. And, thankfully, our families reserved their Aggie jokes about it until after the wedding. I WOULD’VE LOVED TO HAVE BEEN A FLY ON THE WALL WHEN MY PARENTS FIRST MET. They were neighbors in the same apartment building. There was a whole group of people in their building who hung out together all the time (kind of like Melrose Place, but without all the drama). Four couples got married out of that group, including my parents. My mom passed away when I was 14, and my dad passed away in my 30s before I got married. Their marriage was so inspiring to me, and they taught me so much about faith, compassion, influence, and kindness. I really would’ve loved to see how their story started. I’M NOT A DOG PERSON. But my husband loves dogs and really wanted one. We spent the first year of our marriage debating on whether or not to get one, and somehow my heart changed. I guess I saw how much joy dogs brought Cody, so we adopted an adorable yellow lab from a shelter. Her name is Pebbles, and she has won me over!

KEVIN WEST I WAS A MOVIE PROJECTIONIST. My cousin owned a drive-in theater, and for six years I worked for him. It was a great job because I got to see all the new movies. To keep from getting bored, I trained myself to watch only one part of a movie each night so by the end of a weeklong shift, I would have seen the whole movie. Even after I quit, it took me many years to watch a whole movie in one sitting! TALENT SHOWS AREN’T FUN! In fourth grade, for a talent show in front of the whole school, my best friend and I dressed up like girls to sing “Sisters” from the movie White Christmas. We did it to impress a couple of girls we liked at the time. Afterward, we had to go back to class, but we didn’t get a chance to change, so we ended up sitting at our desks for a while in those outfits. It was the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever done, and it took a few years for the teasing to wear off. LISTEN TO GOD’S CALLING. I felt called to missions for years, but I thought that meant moving my family to a foreign country for the rest of our lives, so I refused. After a while, my wife and I began to have trouble in our marriage, and she filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. While divorced, I attended a missions school at my church where I learned about short-term missions trips. I went to Honduras on my first trip and realized this was what the Lord had originally called me to. I took another short trip to Russia and came home to go to my daughter’s birthday party. I saw my ex-wife there, and she looked really upset. I asked how I could help her, and she just said, “I wish we could go back in time.” So I asked her out on a date. We dated for six months and then got remarried. We had been apart for five years, but God restored our marriage when I listened to His calling! BEN HAAKE IT TAKES CHOICES, NOT YEARS. One of my mentors said this all the time, and it stuck with me. Either I can choose to do something now, or I can make up excuses for years and never see my life change. I’ve made several decisions in my life with this advice in mind, and it’s made all the difference. RUNNING IS THE ULTIMATE INTROVERT SPORT. You can put headphones in and be alone with your music and your thoughts. I started running a few years ago, and it’s so refreshing and lifegiving. I ended up running a series of races as well as a marathon, but the adrenaline crash after a marathon makes you feel like your life is over so I haven’t done one in a while. I LOVE AIRPORTS. Traveling is so rewarding for me. I love getting to see different places and experience new things so airports represent the ability to go somewhere quickly. Last year, we did a cross-country road trip with our twoand three-year-old boys, and although it was nice to cross that item off the bucket list, we would be happy to never do it again. Planes are much better. I WAS 30 YEARS OLD THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO DISNEY WORLD. I was on a trip with some friends, and I called my mom and asked her why we had never gone before! Since that day, I have fallen in love with it—I feel creative there and like I’m a kid again. My wife and I even went there on our honeymoon! JOSH BRISCOE I ALMOST TOOK OUT KOBE BRYANT. For about six years, I worked as a Dallas Maverick’s Funslinger. We provided entertainment for the audience, and I was the stilt guy. One time, I was running full speed past the Lakers’ huddle, and Kobe stepped into my path. I had to quickly sidestep him on stilts. I almost fell, but thankfully I didn’t fall or kick Kobe. If I had, it would have probably been on ESPN that night. I’M NOT TO BE TRUSTED IN MOVIE THEATERS. A few years ago, my wife and I went to see Spiderman. No one else was in the theater with us, so when my wife left to use the restroom, I decided to scare her when she came back. I hid near the walkway, and when I saw her coming closer, I jumped out in a crazy Spiderman way—I made a big scene. But it wasn’t my wife. It was an older lady, and I scared the living daylights out of her! Her popcorn flew everywhere. The most embarrassing part is that the lady was good friends with my wife’s mom. MY GUARDIAN ANGEL WEARS A COWBOY HAT. My senior year of high school, I fell asleep at the wheel. My car went into a ditch, hit a fire hydrant, and flipped over. My head went through the windshield, and the steering wheel shattered my femur bone. Then I looked up and my engine was on fire. I thought I was going to die. It was the first time I really prayed to God. I looked up and saw a guy with a cowboy hat standing at my window. He pulled me out of the car and told me to not fall asleep. The police and fire department came shortly afterward. Later on, I found the policeman who was first on the scene and asked him if he remembered a guy in a cowboy hat being there. He told me he found me on the ground by myself. After that accident was when I started truly living for God.

BOAZ BRYANT I WAS OFFERED A CHEERLEADING SCHOLARSHIP. In high school, a friend suggested I join the gymnastics team. (I was short but I still wanted a varsity letter!) I hadn’t done anything like it before, but I ended up really enjoying it. Our coach’s wife was the cheerleading coach for a university, and she offered me a scholarship even though I’d never done cheerleading, but I turned it down. I was afraid of all the ladies. MY FAVORITE WORD IS “NO.” There is so much untapped potential in that one little word. What if I said no to all the wrong things? Then, I would have the time to say yes to all the right ones. This is a lesson I’m still learning. I LIKE TO BUILD. A couple years ago, my wife started showing me pictures of house updates and pieces of furniture she found on Pinterest. I kept saying, “Oh, I could build that for you!” So one day, she told me to go for it! I’d never really done anything like that, but I followed the directions and successfully built a great-looking coffee table. Since then, I’ve built a bunch of items for our house. My favorite thing I’ve created is a wood wall. I found some old, gray-looking fence posts, whitewashed them, and then nailed them to an accent wall in a chevron pattern. It looks really cool, and we always get a lot of compliments when people see it. GROUPS HELPED ME BELONG. One of the first times I attended Gateway, a worship leader walked up to me after the service and invited me to his Gateway Group. The rest is history!

ROB SUMNER I ENJOY HEARING OLD GOSPEL SONGS ACAPELLA. In my early years, my mom and I lived with my grandparents. The best alarm I ever had was hearing my grandmother sing and worship God in the morning. It also meant she was making breakfast. Some of the best moments in my life started with worship and breakfast. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD. Years ago, my wife and I heard God speaking to us to leave everything in Tennessee to come here. Once we said yes, every hurdle seemed to jump out at us, but He made it happen. We arrived not knowing anyone and attended a Habitation service. That night, God confirmed our move even more when three people gave us the same amount of money He told us to give to Gateway before moving here. We’ve been here almost five years now and God continues to amaze us. I MAKE SECURITY NERVOUS. I once went into a bank to deposit a check and heard a lot of honking outside. I looked out to see a car backing out into oncoming traffic. As I asked myself who would do such a thing? I noticed the car looked familiar. Apparently, I failed to put my car in gear. Turns out, security gets nervous when there’s a lot of noise in front of the bank, and you’re running for your life through the lobby. I CAN’T SLEEP ON PLANES. The thought of 40,000 feet between myself and the ground makes me restless. I want to visit Israel, but I might need a freedom class before I get there!
