WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE HAVE YOU EVER gone to Starbucks and noticed how some people seem to live there? Every time I go to the one near my house, I see a guy who is there all the time. We’ll shake hands and say hello— we’ve been doing that for months—but I can honestly say I don’t know his name. Or at least I didn’t know his name until yesterday when I was in a big hurry to get my coffee and get back on the road. Instead of going through our morning ritual of a quick handshake and out the
door, I decided to stop and get to know him. It turns out he’s not at Starbucks all day everyday like I perceived—we just have a similar schedule. Taking that moment to stop and connect with people is something I’m trying to get better about doing. If this is something you’d like to do too, I want to encourage you to look for opportunities to connect with others. Two easy ways to do this are with Gateway Equip and Gateway Groups. Each of our six campuses offers Equip classes on a variety of topics. See if any of the Equip classes listed in this issue of Gateway Life (page 19) pique your interest, and you might find yourself surrounded by like-minded people. And there are hundreds of Gateway Groups taking place across the Metroplex. Some have a spiritual focus and some are more about fellowship. Take my group, for example. We meet each week to watch a television series, have fellowship with each other, and talk about life. Some groups eat at new restaurants, while others ride motorcycles,
knit, or do Bible studies. If you visit groups.gatewaypeople.com, chances are you’ll find a group you’ll love. If you’re looking for more information about Gateway, read about all our church has to offer (page 12). You’ll be encouraged by our article about dealing with failure and how it plays a key role in your successes (page 8), and be sure to read about Gateway’s upcoming outreach opportunity as we partner with reviveTX this spring (page 16). At Gateway, we’re all about people, so join me in being more intentional about connecting with others. There are opportunities available to us every day, so let’s keep our eyes open for whomever God puts in our paths.

“Both my husband and I prayed separately about what to give for the Heart for the Kingdom offering. So when my husband heard a quick whisper, he was wondering, Did I hear that right? He said, ‘Lord, if You will confirm this and let Karen have the same number, I'll know that I heard you!’ He looked at me and asked what my number was, and I told him. It was the exact same number! God's confirmation to us that
He indeed speaks when we ask and listen!” Karen Shackelford

CALEB AND RACHEL JENKINS “Our passion is being family to people who don’t have family around during the holidays or other special occasions. There are so many people who love the holidays, and then there are people who dread them. When you live far from family, celebrating holidays can be really difficult. We’ve met so many people who have told us, ‘We’re “here,” and all of our family is “there.” It’s just us.’ We’ve lived here in Fort Worth for
10 years. My wife’s family is from Tulsa and my mom is in Oregon, so every Easter we ask ourselves, ‘Do we want to have dinner by ourselves or drive to Tulsa?’ We really have a passion for people who don’t have family nearby. We planned a Super Bowl party tonight, and we’ve met several people this week who want to join our Gateway Group. This is our first year doing a holiday Gateway Group, but everyone we’ve invited has been really excited about it. We’re still figuring out that rhythm.”

“I was in the military for 12 years. I deployed to Afghanistan four times, and after I came home in 2013, I was diagnosed with severe and chronic Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (ptsd). When I got home, I couldn’t sleep for more than three hours a night. I would wake up with nightmares or cold sweats, and I was afraid to even try to go to sleep. I was put on a ton of medication, but it just made things worse. Then, I met a friend who kept telling me about church. I knew there was a God, but I did a lot of bad things while I was deployed, and I never saw God in the same light after. But this friend dragged my wife and me to Gateway on the night that Gateway Groups were out in the Lobby. I met a guy there (who is now my mentor), and we started attending his group and reading the Word daily. I wanted to get baptized too, but I was injured in a river in Afghanistan, so I was afraid of having a flashback. I called a pastor and he accommodated my wife and me. We were baptized together this September. I’ve been getting a full six to nine hours of sleep a night ever since, and my mind is so clear.”

“MY WATER BAPTISM WAS AWESOME!
I turned seventy-five in October so this was special to me. I lost my wife to cancer in 2014, and my life was pretty much going nowhere after that. My sister invited me to a Saturday service, and I was impressed. Most of my family came to see the old guy get dunked, but it felt as though I had washed my soul. I will never forget the feeling I had at that time.” Larry Blackwood | via Email
RYAN AND BEATRICE DUE “We started this year off differently than any year before. We went on a family retreat to Pine Cove Christian Camp. It was a good chance to reset, create some order, and put God first for the year. We’ll definitely make it a yearly thing. My wife and I are trying to be more intentional about spending time with our three kids. We’ve seen them get their priorities out of order, so we’re trying to right the ship. We’re not any different from any other family—our lives are just as busy with no sign of slowing down anytime soon, so times like this are important. This time away really resonated with our kids because they’re already talking about how much they want to go back next year. That made us feel good because they always seem to want to go to a friend’s house instead of spending time together, but seeing our family connect was really special. Time is flying by and these kids are growing up fast. We only have a small amount of time with them.”

OPPORTUNITY TO FAIL Tomorrow’s successes are built by today’s failures by Micah Conger
I
N ART SCHOOL, I heard a story about Picasso sitting on a park bench. A woman recognized him and boldly requested that he sketch her portrait. Picasso quickly sketched a simple, single-stroke drawing of the woman, remarkably capturing her essence. The woman asked what she owed him for the drawing, and Picasso replied, “Five thousand dollars.” “What?! How could you want so much money for this picture? It only took you a second to draw it!” she exclaimed. To which Picasso responded, “Madame, it took me my entire life.” Today, Picasso’s works average about $200,000 market value. But it wasn’t his innate talent that made him world-renowned. It was actually all the crumpled up drawings filling his studio wastebaskets that led to his greatness. In other words, he failed a lot before he succeeded.
GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM 9
Fear of failure is one of the top reasons why I, and millions of people like me, hide behind a litany of excuses any time we feel that adrenaline-pumping compulsion deep within. Why is failure so scary? The idea of wasting precious time and resources can halt any already-exhausted, budget-minded individual. Waves of humiliation and shame crash over us when the thought of past failures haunt our memories. Our identities are wrapped up in our carefully crafted reputation rather than the other way around. We work so hard to present our lives in a Pinterest-worthy way, but sometimes that means we live a staged, scripted life. What if instead you gave yourself the okay to fail? The okay to set out to do something you’re not sure will succeed. Call it walking by faith if you will, but either way, it presents an opportunity to fail. It’s nerve-wracking. It’s courageous. It’s exhilarating. And it comes with many benefits.
“LET’S NOT BE ASHAMED OF WHAT WE CAN’T DO BUT PROUD OF WHAT WE CAN.” Failure defines what we should pick up and put down.
We were each born with a specific purpose. We embody special talents, skills, and experiences that no one else does. Let’s not be ashamed of what we can’t do but proud of what we can. Fish can’t fly and birds can’t swim! Einstein said this, and I paraphrase—If you spend your whole life trying to teach a fish to fly, it will spend its whole life feeling like a failure.
Failure shows us how to be better.
While we are certainly born with innate talents, the time spent developing those talents into skills is what brings success. Like Picasso, if we keep picking up our pencil and trying again, we’ll eventually reach Picasso-level mastery.
10 APRIL 2017
Failure builds trust.
Failure makes you relatable to those around you. It makes you similar to them. Their lives aren’t perfect. Their lives are messy. They get tired, hangry, stressed out, and overwhelmed just like you. We all have rubble at our feet, but if others see you rise out of the rubble of failure, they will identify with you. When you give yourself the opportunity to fail, you inspire others to do the same.
Failure combats the perfection paralysis.
So many of us are immobilized by perfectionism. We often opt to do nothing rather than risk messing up. Well, if I can’t be the best, or the most influential, or if I can’t stick with it, why start? Why bother? Why mess up the pages to my life story? The question is … what life story? If you aren’t messing up the pages, you aren’t writing. Perfection is not an option. But I can get up and keep pressing toward my high calling in Christ Jesus. Embrace all of life’s challenges and all of your shortcomings, and don’t be ashamed of yourself. The bottom line is: failure is for us, not against us. The idea that failure is wasted energy, time, and money is false. Time and resources are never wasted on today’s failure—they are invested in tomorrow’s success. So, take a chance. Go for that opportunity. Make failure your teacher and friend. Your history isn’t final until you stop writing your story. GL Micah Conger is a member of the Southlake Campus, and she attends with her husband, Adrian, and their son Caden.

Does the Bible include made-up stories to help us learn lessons, or did they actually happen? by CHAD SYKES
O
n bookshelves in homes across the world there are copies of history’s best-selling book. In the period between 1815 and 1975, 5 billion copies of this book were sold. For millennia, people have heard or read the contents of this book and have tried to apply its wisdom and truth to their daily lives. Of course, the book we’re referring to is the Bible. Our approach to this book will have a profound impact upon how we see God, the world, and our role in relation to both of those things. But, one of the most important things we should consider is what the Bible is not. The Bible is not a rule book. The Bible is not a collection of dusty doctrines only for religious professionals. The Bible is not an outdated relic of an ancient culture. Though the Bible contains commandments, doctrines, and a record of events that happened in times past, what it truly is runs much deeper than that. The Bible is a story. Not a story in the sense of a fable or fairy tale but a narrative account of God’s activity in the world. The Bible tells of God’s true redemptive mission as recorded by human beings. Human authors wrote these texts over several thousand years in many genres: narrative, prophecy, poetry, wisdom, epistles, gospels, and more. These authors used all kinds of literary methods to communicate truth and wisdom about God to those hearing and reading the sacred words.
While it’s true that humans wrote these words, the Bible teaches that they wrote them under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16–17). As Christians, we can confidently say that every word of Scripture is true. However, we must be careful to understand the intent of the author in what he is communicating. The Bible does include stories intended to teach us lessons (e.g., parables, proverbs), but it also includes accurate retellings of historical events. So the short answer to both of our questions is a confident “Yes!” Most importantly, we can be confident of the life-changing truth that God is speaking through the Bible. And, through the Bible and by His Spirit, God is speaking to you! Every day you can hear the life-changing truth and wisdom from God that will light up the path of your life. Through the Bible, God is revealing to you His very true account of His rescue of creation through His son, Jesus Christ. A revolutionary outreach opportunity for you.
W
hat do you think would happen if Gateway people spent 50 days walking through our communities and praying for people? That’s the question reviveTX, an initiative created by Gateway partner Time to Revive, is asking us. We pray the answer is a citywide revival.
What is reviveTX? reviveTX is a movement designed to unite thousands of believers across the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex for an outreach unlike anything we’ve ever seen! For the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost (April 17–June 1), churches across the Metroplex will share the gospel with our communities. Revive has been done in other states before, but it’s usually on a much smaller scale. Nevertheless, God has been clear about making this one 10 times bigger than usual. To accomplish this massive undertaking, the Metroplex has been divided into 10 regions where churches (including Gateway’s Dallas Campus) can train, mobilize, and deploy volunteers into our communities and serve as a gathering place for believers all over the region. “God has used Gateway in a really special way to radically start to change this city, and now we have 253 congregations joining us as well,” says Kyle Martin, the founder of Time to Revive. “Gateway is quietly leading the charge, and we’re honored to walk this journey with all of you.”
How does it work? reviveTX meets at several host churches across the Metroplex, including Gateway Dallas, for seven weeks, Monday through Thursday. Each day starts with breakfast, prayer, worship, and training, and then teams go out into the nearby areas to pray for people. The goal is simple: ask people how you can pray

for them and see where the Lord leads. Each day ends with dinner, worship, celebration, and testimonies of God’s work in people’s lives that day. “We have follow-up strategies in place for anyone who wants further discipleship,” says Gunnar Johnson, one of the Gateway Global pastors. “This is different than anything Gateway has ever done, and we’re excited to see all God does through it!”
How can I get involved? We would love for every person at Gateway to join us for at least one day (or more) during this initiative! You will be trained and sent out in teams to share God with people in a simple and nonconfrontational way. This is a great opportunity to connect with fellow believers across the Metroplex and truly make a difference in our cities. If you’re unable to join us, please pray for us each day as we pray for people and share our faith with those around us. GL

I Want My HGTV
by STACY BURNETT
“I need granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. “I need a large master bedroom with an en suite bathroom with his and hers vanities.” “I must have an open concept for entertaining!” “I must have (original) hardwood flooring.” If you’re like me and 42 million other Americans, you’ve heard these “needs” uttered hundreds of times on HGTV. I became an HGTV junkie nine years ago when my husband and I bought our first home. I started out just watching a few shows, but it quickly became one of my favorite pastimes. I was mesmerized by the transformations of the home makeovers and would pause on each scene, so I could really see how each space was transformed from something drab to something beautiful. I dreamt about what my house could be with just a few coats of paint and a wall taken down here or there. I felt inspired, equipped, and empowered to take on projects of my own. I even refinished an old dresser that’s now our entertainment center. HGTV has completely changed the way I decorate, shop for décor, and think about renovations. On the surface, this doesn’t sound bad, does it? But what I discovered was too much of a good thing isn’t such a good thing. As I looked around my house at all the things I didn’t have, the inspiration I felt slowly turned into contempt. Without realizing it, I had been filling my heart and mind with messages that made my home feel inadequate, like I needed more and better things.
18 APRIL 2017
The house my husband and I fell in love with suddenly looked old, ugly, and out of date. My countertops, while nice and completely functional, aren’t granite. My walls are painted a warm winter white, not the cool crisp gray that makes a home feel more inviting and open. And worst of all, my floors are covered in carpet. (Gasp!) I began to think we should just buy a new house. My to-do list of all the things I needed to change began to mount. And without realizing what was happening, I began to feel worse and worse about what God had so graciously given us. Then one morning during my quiet time, I felt the Lord gently correct me. I was no longer grateful for His provision and had become greedy and full of envy. I was reminded of the verse in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (God must have known we’d have a hard time with this concept, because he put the same verse in Luke 12:34.) There is a longing in our hearts that cannot be fulfilled by material possessions. The pleasure they bring is fleeting and temporary. Still we search in an attempt to satisfy this longing with newer and better things, but our spirits require something much more. We must trust God to satisfy this need in us. Clearly, I had lost sight of the true treasure and had placed my significance in having all the latest and greatest trends in my home. I took some time that morning to ask the Lord to forgive me and replace my greedy heart with a grateful one. Now when I look around my home, I thank the Lord for all He’s so graciously given us. GL
“It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.” Luke 12:34 (The Message)

LYNDA GROVE I MET MY HUSBAND DURING A DIFFICULT TIME. My mother had just passed away, and I had to be back at school two weeks later, and that’s when I met him. My faith was new at the time, but as I watched Kevin’s life, I learned the power of Christ in everyday situations and the strength available through our relationship with Him. WE LOVED GATEWAY BEFORE IT EXISTED! Years ago, my husband and I were transitioning out of our church, and we had subconsciously created a list of things we desired in our new church. One evening we got together with some old friends, Pastor Robert and Debbie, and asked what was going on in their lives. Pastor Robert began to express his plans to start Gateway, and as he shared his vision, both Kevin and I felt as if he was reading our list, checking off each item. We instantly knew we had found our church home. I’M ALWAYS PAINTING SOMETHING: furniture, my front door, my living room, anything. I love change, and I love when things are pretty. Painting a room changes it instantly—makes it feel clean and updated. Sometimes I’ll fall in love with an accent piece or trinket, and it’ll give me a vision for a whole room, which I’ll obviously have to repaint to create. I LOVE GARDENING. But everything I plant always dies. My dad used to have the most beautiful garden, and he taught me a lot, but for some reason I haven’t had the same success. My favorite thing to grow is mint. I love the smell and taste of it. I’ll often create different tea or juice recipes to put the mint leaves in, and they always taste so yummy. CAROL ROSE I RECEIVED THE WRONG WELCOME CD. On my second visit to Gateway, I went to Gateway Central and received a “Welcome to Gateway” CD. It was supposed to be some Gateway Worship songs and a greeting from Pastor Robert, but for some reason, it wasn’t! I was accidentally given a recording from a group leaders’ meeting where Pastor Marcus Brecheen talked about why we have groups. It was a God-moment though, because it was exactly what I needed to hear! I knew I was where God wanted me to be to learn about freedom, receive healing, and find family. BABY STEPS. The best lesson I’ve ever learned was to take one step at a time. Life can be overwhelming, and we all go through different seasons where it’s hard not to get ahead of ourselves. I tend to eagerly plan and do things on my own, but that’s not the way to success. God has been teaching me to trust in Him and wait for Him to tell me what the next step is, no matter how small or large. I PLAYED CLARINET. When I was in junior high and high school, I competed with my best friend to see who would earn first chair (best clarinet) in the band, and we loved playing at all the football games even though we had to wear those ridiculous marching band uniforms. I haven’t played the clarinet since then. When my daughter picked the clarinet to play in school, I tried to play it, but nothing came out! I NEVER FORGET MY CURLERS. Years ago, I was at a conference with pastors and leaders, and I must have been in a hurry to get out of my hotel room and downstairs for breakfast one morning because I forgot I still had my curlers in my bangs! I was mortified. I quickly covered my head and went back upstairs to take them out. For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

JELANI LEWIS MY MOTHER WAS A FANTASTIC WOMAN. And she was instrumental in developing humility in my life. One of my favorite stories was when my mother called me up to do a prophetic dance in front of the church when I was a teenager. I’ve never recovered. But when I worked in children’s ministry, I was in a place where you do what you have to do to reach kids. So I’ve been known to dress up in costumes. Part of it is passion for performing arts, and part of it is just being able to laugh at myself. I LOVE TO LAUGH WITH MY BROTHER. He’s a few years younger than me, and no matter what is going on in our lives, good or bad, when we call each other we end up laughing out loud. We laugh about silly things, movie quotes, anything, and there’s so much innocence and beauty in it. I met a lot of boring Christians when I was younger. I just didn’t see them have fun, but I don’t think that’s a reflection of God at all. God has a sense of humor, and I believe He is pleased when He sees us enjoying the life He’s given us and laughing with those around us. GROWING UP, I NEVER WANTED TO WORK FOR A CHURCH. I used to tell God that I would go to the jungles of Africa before I worked for a church. I was afraid I’d lose my personality and become kind of stale if I became a pastor. So when I was promoted to pastor a few years ago, I asked my boss what it meant for me, what needed to change about me. He said, “Jelani, we want you because you’re you. We don’t want you to be anyone else.” It truly liberated me. For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

SANDY JOBE I’M AMBIDEXTROUS. Apparently I was a very curious five-year-old and one time, I found my aunt’s tear gas gun. (Don’t ask me why she had one!) It was small and had the appearance of an ink pen, and when I tried to write with it, it fired into the palm of my hand. I nearly lost my right hand and had to have surgery to save it. While it recovered, I learned to write with the other hand. JESUS KNEW THE PAIN OF LOSING A LOVED ONE. We came to Gateway in 2000 after losing my dad and one of my sisters a year apart. We had been here for about three months, and I still couldn’t sit through a service without crying. One week Pastor Robert shared that although Scripture does not tell us when, we know that Jesus lost his father, Joseph, sometime after he was 12 years old. That’s why, years later, when Jesus was on the cross, He asked John to take care of his mother, Mary. Knowing this brought me so much comfort, and it was then I realized I could talk to God about the intense pain and grief I felt. I’M SO AFRAID OF SNAKES AND CRAWLING THINGS. I can’t go into the reptile building at the zoo. And if there’s a snake in a movie, I close my eyes and then pray before bed. I DON’T NORMALLY LAUGH AT FUNERALS. But one time, the pastor mispronounced the names of the family, and it just hit me as so funny. I started laughing so hard I was crying. After the funeral a friend came up to console me and said he didn’t know I was so close to the deceased. I had to tell him I wasn’t crying from sorrow but from laughing at the blooper the pastor made. For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

JOSH LEBEL CHANGE YOUR PLAYGROUND. When I was in high school, I walked away from everything I knew about God. I was hanging out with people who were bad influences, and I hit rock bottom. As I sat there broken, my youth pastor looked me in the eyes and said, “You need to change your playground.” He was telling me that who I spend my time with will set the ceiling for my life. Since then, I have always tried to surround myself with people who are going in the right direction, pushing further and harder than me. I’VE HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO DO A LOT OF CRAZY THINGS. My wife and I pioneered a Youth with a Mission (YWAM) base in Maine, so I used to lead ministry teams and travel extensively. I’ve been to 23 nations, trekked through the Himalayas, helped a village affected by human trafficking, and even moved my family to Jordan for a few months to work with refugees and teach English. But I think my favorite place to be was Nepal—the people there are so kind. I WAS A COP. Growing up, I wanted to be a firefighter. I loved the idea of saving people, intervening when people are at their worst, and helping in a time of need. But I joined the police force instead. It was the high-pressure environment and the opportunity to solve intense problems that drew me to become a cop. And I really liked being someone people could rely on when they needed help. Obviously there were some people who made the job challenging, but I loved it. If God hadn’t called me into ministry, I’d probably still be doing that. MY MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT HAPPENED IN THE BATHROOM. I was in there when suddenly I heard high heels enter the room. Turns out I was in the women’s room. Oops!

Born in Dover, New Hampshire, and grew up in Alfred, a town in southern Maine.
KEMTAL GLASGOW I’M A HUGE INTROVERT. I used to travel and speak to large crowds so people naturally think I’m an extrovert, but the truth is I’m painfully shy! DO EVERYTHING WITH CONVICTION. Years ago, I had a boss who was trying to encourage me to take more risks. She said, “Don’t be afraid of making a mistake. If you’re going to run into a wall, don’t let it knock you down. Instead, leave a Kemtal-shaped hole in the wall because you ran with such conviction.” It’s a reminder to be fully present and totally engaged in what you are doing or who you are with. I SING OUT OF KEY. One time, I was working at a conference and wanted the worship team to sing the last worship song again, so I motioned to the worship leader to do so. But our signals got crossed and I started singing into the mic without the band. For the first few words, the band just looked at me dumbfounded, but I was already out there so I just kept going. Thankfully, the band kicked in and covered up my singing. At the end of the service, the head sound technician said to me, “Sir, you really shouldn’t sing.” I LOVE THE SOUND OF LAUGHTER, especially when it’s coming from one of my kids. And in ministry, I like it when I’m teaching. Humor breaks down walls, opens the heart, and helps underscore a message. For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.
