WELCOME

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE I AM SO PROUD OF YOU for putting God first at the beginning of the year. I know many pastors who would be timid about asking their congregations to have just one day of prayer and fasting, and I’ve asked you to do 21 days! I am very, very proud of your hunger for God, your commitment to the kingdom, and your love for people. You are a great, great congregation, and I know God’s proud of you too. First 2016 is about putting God first. By giving God the first of our year,

we’re saying, “God, I want to honor You first.” When God is first, He blesses everything else. This is true with our finances, our time, our health, and our worship—we should put God first in everything we do. And I can’t think of a better way to start the new year as a church family than by setting aside the first of the year and dedicating it to the Lord. It’s a time for us to corporately and individually express our love, gratitude, and honor to God, the One who has given us everything! As we step into the new year with an expectant heart for all that God is going to do, I know you’ll be encouraged by this issue of Gateway Life. We have a special guest article from one of my spiritual fathers, Pastor Jack Hayford. In it, he

shares about why we shouldn’t dwell on the past but instead should open our hearts to the Lord as He leads us to new places (page 12). You’ll be inspired by Kassie Dulin’s article about the importance of voting for godly leaders (page 10). And as you read the exciting profile on Lawrence Swicegood (Gateway’s executive director of media), you’ll find out more about his involvement with Franklin Graham’s Decision America Tour, which will include a prayer rally on the steps of every state capitol this year (page 24). I’ve always had a desire for each person at Gateway to go on a ministry trip, and we’ve made it even easier for you to join us! As you start praying about ways you can get involved in ministry in the coming year, check out our Outreach section and learn more about the ministry trips being offered this year. We are going more places than ever! As we dive into First 2016, I pray you allow God to move in your heart and life like never before. When we come together and give Him the first of our lives, I believe God’s presence will be stronger because together we’re looking forward to all He has planned for us this year.

“I believe God healed me last night at Habitation at the Grand Prairie Campus! I have been dealing with a strained quadriceps for a month, and I prayed for my leg to be healed among several other prayers. Today, I could exercise with no pain! WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? I wanted to be a CIA body language expert disguised as a world-traveling fisherman. WHAT IS SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT YOU? I am a CIA body language expert disguised as a pastor. Just kidding … most people don’t know I’m an introvert. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE? When someone says, “We need to talk,” without giving any context of what they want to talk about. You can’t help but replay everything you’ve ever done wrong since childhood.

“This weekend at the NRH Campus, my daughter, Landry, had an upset tummy. The janitor overheard us and went to the kitchen to get her Sprite and crackers. Then he explained the power of healing and how Landry can pray over her body. Then he prayed for her and hugged and kissed her!”

“DURING THE VERY BUSY HOURS

leading up to the start of the Men’s Night, I was ‘bullrushed’ by a young man who was obviously ready to hear Jase Robertson speak. I told him the event would start with some music at 7:00 pm, and then Jase would be the main speaker. He was not happy and obviously did not want to be at church. He told me the only reason he was there was because his girlfriend told him about Jase speaking tonight. I gave him one of our no-shave t-shirts and that calmed him down a bit. We parted ways, and the next time I saw him he was in tears at the altar telling me he was ready to get his life right with the Lord. I immediately prayed over him, and after praying, I invited him to a men’s Promise Principle group. He said he would definitely be there … and he was! He then came to weekend services at the NRH Campus and dedicated his life to the Lord after hearing Pastor Robert’s message ‘The Trump Card.’ He connected with our Fresh Start booth and will be coming to my men’s group too!” Pastor Matt Lankenau

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD? My wife’s jokes. Well, maybe not the jokes themselves, but the fact that she cracks herself up with the punch lines. PROUDEST MOMENT? Anytime I see my kids worshipping. WHERE WILL YOU GO? THERE’S A MINISTRY TRIP FOR EVERYONE! by Katie Smith

So the question is, where will you go?

PEOPLE

2014 2015

WHEN GATEWAY was a fledgling church of just 300, Pastor Robert said, “I want everyone at Gateway to go on a ministry trip.” At the time, it was an achievable goal. Since then, Gateway has grown tremendously, but the goal has remained the same, and it was getting harder to send more people on trips. “With our previous trip model, it would take more than 40 years to mobilize everyone, without even accounting for church growth in the meantime,” says Paul Rupert, ministry coordinator in Bless! (Gateway Global Ministries). So the Global team got to work! This year, Bless! introduced a new paperless system that makes signing up, filling out paperwork, and raising funds for a ministry trip easier for those traveling and for those organizing. Now, with just a few clicks on the Bless! website, you can find the perfect trip location, age group, dates, and ministry type.

FIVE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT by Kassie Dulin

KEY ELECTION DATES FOR SPRING 2016

Monday, February 1 February 16–26 Tuesday, March 1

Last Day to Register to Vote for Primary Election Early Voting Primary Election Day

IN THIS ELECTION CYCLE, we will choose men and women to lead our nation. The leaders we elect will determine our future

on important issues such as the right to life, the institution of marriage, fiscal policy and national debt, national security, our religious freedoms, and our next Supreme Court justices.

DID YOU KNOW? 10  JANUARY 2016

On Inauguration Day 2017, four Supreme Court justices will be 78 years of age or older. That means the next president could appoint up to four new Supreme Court justices.

“WE WANT TO SEE 100% VOTER REGISTRATION AND VOTING AT GATEWAY CHURCH.” –PASTOR ROBERT MORRIS

T

he policies and laws our leaders enact will affect America for decades to come. As Christians, we want to see good public policies enacted that reflect biblical values. We have an opportunity to do this by voting for principled leaders, but unfortunately, we as believers haven’t always been the best stewards of our votes. It’s estimated there are more than 60 million Biblebelieving Christians in the United States, but only 30 million of them vote in any given election. This is tragic, because those millions of votes could make a huge impact on our nation. For example, in the 2008 elections, the voting margin in Missouri between the two main presidential candidates was 3,903 votes. In that state, there are approximately 102,522 Christians who didn’t register to vote. In North Carolina, the voting margin between the two candidates was 14,177 votes. But it’s estimated that there were 281,212 Christians who weren’t registered to vote. Not only that, but every presidential election in the past 25 years has been won by less than 10 million votes. So what would happen if 30 million newly registered Christians voted in 2016? Not only could it impact the election, it could change the future of our nation. WHAT CAN YOU DO?

If you are concerned about our country and want to see our laws reflect godly values, we encourage you to vote for principled leaders who will stand for truth. Here are five ways you can make your vote count: LEARN BIBLICAL REASONS TO VOTE.

In Exodus 18:21, God told Moses to “select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.” This verse gives us a sound pattern to follow in voting: We should choose leaders who are able, truthful, and who fear God. Because as Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” Learn more reasons Christians should vote at vote.gatewaypeople.com.

CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION STATUS.

It’s estimated that over 30 million Americans think they are registered to vote but are not. Are you one of them? Even if you think you are registered, it’s a good idea to check. You can verify your status at vote.gatewaypeople.com. REGISTER TO VOTE.

If you aren’t registered to vote, or if you’ve moved and need to update your address, you can register to vote at the Welcome Center at all Gateway Church campuses January 23–24 and January 30–31. You can also register to vote online anytime at vote.gatewaypeople.com. VOTE ACCORDING TO BIBLICAL VALUES.

Be a good steward of your vote by making sure you know where candidates stand on the issues that are important to you. We will have values-based voter guides available at all Gateway Church campuses during the weekends before the elections. They will also be available online at vote.gatewaypeople.com. PRAY.

Most importantly, pray that Americans will turn their hearts toward God and that our leaders will uphold biblical values at every level of government. Because, as God promises in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” Voting is a powerful way to make your voice heard and take a stand for righteousness. If we will seek God’s face, pray faithfully, and steward our votes well, by God’s grace, we can return to our godly heritage of “One Nation Under God.” GL Kassie Dulin is the director of legal communications at Liberty Institute and has been a member of Gateway since 2002.

AS A NEW YEAR UNFOLDS, THE LORD WANTS us to know what to believe Him for and how to be open to that, because He is set to do it. How can we step forward into His year of new tomorrows with expectation?

CALLED TO NEW DISCERNMENT Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. –1 Corinthians 5:6-7 Purging out the old leaven to become a new lump refers to a practice the Lord instituted at the beginning of Passover, which God called “a beginning of days.” In releasing the children of Israel from slavery to their destiny in His order, the first thing the Lord instructed was seven days of eating unleavened bread. The skill of ancient Egypt’s bakers with yeast had cultivated a particular taste among the people. The Lord’s directive was not to call them to a life of blandness but to move them away from what they were accustomed to in their former environment, so they could become sensitized to where He was leading them. Paul is addressing a congregation who had lost their “taste” or discernment for the Lord’s ways. Within the community of the faithful, there had come tolerance for the Corinthian culture, considered even by Roman standards to be the lowest with regard to moral matters. These who

BELIEVING FOR NEW TOMORROWS “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” – Isaiah 43:18-19 The promise of new tomorrows has a requirement built into it: Don’t talk about things the way they were. Don’t let “the way it was” dominate your mind. This is not just “positive thinking”—it is God’s power. He says He will make a way in the wilderness. There are thorny issues and an overgrowth of circumstances that we don’t know how to get through, but the Lord promises a road through the wilderness—a way—and a river in the desert—a resource to sustain us while we’re pursuing that new way.

had come to Christ were losing their perspective on grace— they knew the grace of God had forgiven them of their past failures, but they had somehow lost their taste for holiness. The old leaven is an exaggeration of the idea of grace. The Lord’s desire is for His people to discern between what was tasty by the old way, and what is a new fulfillment beyond all you have ever known. He calls us to new tomorCLEANSED FOR NEW POSSIBILITIES rows, but first He wants to “re-tool” our taste buds so we don’t accommodate what is less than worthy of His purpose in “Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the our life. That’s the principle of the “new lump”—God wants wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are to create a new “rise” of His life, so that it’s a “leaven that ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both comes from heaven,” not from the world’s order of things. are preserved.” – Matthew 9:17

CONVINCED OF NEW PROMISES Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. – 2 Corinthians 5:17 Our new tomorrows begin when we first come to the Lord: the old record of our sin is removed, and we are promised eternal life. If we know Jesus, we know those two things are true, and our biggest concerns are resolved: He’s erased my past that would have destroyed the possibilities of my future; and, He’s given me the promise of a future I never could have gained in myself. Still, it’s amazing the number of people who believe God can do those things but have no idea how God can handle a situation they are facing right now. In Christ, we have available to us a resource that continues to beget the newness of His power in the everyday things of our life. He sets before us new tomorrows in which He offers to develop our character, help us shape new habits, bring freshness and vitality into our vocation, bring a resurgence of love in a marriage, and reconstruct ruined relationships and broken homes.

14  JANUARY 2016

When Jesus encountered religious traditionalism, He said that although it may have served them well in the past, it wouldn’t take people to the next place. When Jesus talked about new wineskins, He was talking about something that had been rinsed and stretched “just like new.” Just as surely as new wine is an illustration of the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the operation of the Word of God flows like water into our lives. To open up to the newness of God’s possibilities in our lives, most of us need a rinsing of the fabric of our lives. Oftentimes those of us who have walked with Him the longest can become the stiffest when the Lord says, “I want to do a new thing.” Even the dearest of committed believers has the mistaken capacity to say, I’ve tasted it all. The Lord wants to rinse us fresh and do something new in us unlike anything we’ve ever known before. Won’t you welcome the new year with me by opening up to and expecting the promise of God’s new tomorrows in your life? Invite the Lord to let the rivers of heaven flow over you and to renew your capacity to receive the new thing He wants to do in you. GL Article provided by Jack Hayford Ministries.

FALLING

FORWARD Why excellence is better than perfectionism by Pastor Thomas Miller

16  JANUARY 2016

W

HEN I BECAME THE WORSHIP PASTOR AT GATEWAY,

there were only 100 people attending each week. We’ve grown quite a bit since those early days, and because of the strong vision God gave Pastor Robert for our church, I was inspired to dream big about all the things we could do in Gateway Worship, including live recordings, choirs, musical productions, and a school of worship. As these things came to my mind, I thought, I need to stop dreaming because they’re not God’s dreams, they’re my dreams. God quickly stopped me and said, “Thomas, I love it when you dream, but I’m always going to supersede what you dream. It’s always going to be better.” So many of the things I dreamed about have already come to fruition, and they have definitely been bigger and better than I envisioned.

PERFECTIONISM Motivation: Fear

Since those early days, one guiding principle that has stayed with me is the principle of excellence. I encourage everyone on all our worship teams to operate from a place of excellence, because it communicates that you value what you’re doing. But this principle doesn’t just apply to music; it can be applied to any area of our lives. The more we use it, the more we live out Colossians 3:23, which says, “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” However, we must be careful not to mistake excellence for perfectionism. The two are very different: One leads to joy and satisfaction, while the other leads to frustration and disappointment. Here are some differences between the two.

EXCELLENCE Motivation: Love

Perfectionism is always motivated by fear—fear of man, fear of failure. Perfectionism asks, What will happen if I mess up? And it says, If somebody around me messes up, I’m going to crack the whip and be mad at them!

Excellence says, I’m serious about what I do, but I don’t take myself too seriously. There is room for mistakes in excellence.

Unrealistic Aim

Healthy Aim

Perfectionism aims for a target no one can hit. No one can be perfect at anything, but we can all be excellent.

God’s given each of us a calling, and we are to be stewards of our callings. Whether you’re a musician, businessperson, artist, or teacher, you are called to aim for a target that makes you better.

No Room for Mistakes

Room for Mistakes

Even the smallest mistake completely ruins perfectionism. When we fall, there’s no opportunity to get back up and improve after a mistake has been made.

When you make a mistake, an attitude of excellence isn’t to be confused with apathy. Excellence doesn’t say, Oh well. Instead, when you fall, fall forward so you can learn from your mistakes and do better next time.

Easily Discouraged

Not Easily Discouraged

Perfectionism produces disappointment because it always points out the ways you don’t measure up. It doesn’t look to the future or see your potential. It is stuck in the now.

Even if you haven’t met your goals and haven’t reached your full potential, excellence doesn’t get discouraged. It looks to the future as you diligently improve your craft.

No matter what you do, I want to encourage you to do it with excellence. When you apply the principle of excellence to your life, you’ll find contentment with your work as it continues to improve. Trading perfectionism for excellence will bring freedom to your life and help you become a better

steward of the talents God has given you. When you work with excellence, God will always supersede your dreams. GL Thomas Miller is an executive senior pastor at Gateway and has been on staff since January 2001.

I have traveled long distances over land and sea. In fact, I have grown fond of the ocean. I was part of the Bible’s first search party. My job was an important one, and I had to wait almost a year for my opportunity to do it. I only had one chance to get it right, and there was a lot of pressure because the guy who went before me messed up the job. I have been known to eat olives, and in my story I share them with my boss. Who am I?

out at the end of November, and no doubt many of you were in line with your Katniss braids ready to see the final installment of this heart-wrenching series. But what does a story about a nation that forces kids to engage in gladiatorial-type games mean for those with a spiritual perspective? You’ll be happy to know that this series actually portrays several interesting parallels and reminders for Christians. One thing we can draw from the Hunger Games we get from Haymitch, the abrasive mentor who counsels Katniss and Peeta as they step into the games. In the second installment of the series, Catching Fire, Katniss struggles to remember she’s fighting the Capitol and not her fellow tributes, and Haymitch says, “Remember who the enemy is.” We need this reminder every once in a while too. When you feel like you’re fighting your family, friends, or even your own tendencies, it’s good to remember who the enemy of our hearts truly is. The enemy would like nothing more than for us to focus on wrestling against each other and forget that he’s the real problem. This scene provides a potent reminder of our ongoing spiritual battle and becomes a call for all of us to war against our enemy, not each other.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

my job and the clients I represented. It was somewhat convicting to realize my work was to convince someone to stay at a Marriott Hotel, drink a Pepsi, enjoy a Coors beer, and eat a bag of Fritos. I thought, Is this my life’s passion? It began my progression to move from the agency world to a career path in which I could use my God-given talents to serve the kingdom.

MY FAMILY was invited to Gateway six years ago and we were searching for a church dedicated to reaching people. I’ve seen many churches that are basically spiritual country clubs for people just going through the motions of religion. I wanted my family to be part of a vibrant, growing church. I knew we had found the right church for us when at the end of the service, Pastor Robert invited people to the altar for prayer. It showed that Gateway is passionate about meeting people’s spiritual needs. I ALMOST KILLED PRESIDENT GEORGE H. W. BUSH. Of course it was accidental, otherwise I wouldn’t be here—I’d be in Cell Block D. The President was

playing golf with a group of friends. As a member of the White House Presidential Advance team, I took care of logistics for the President and First Lady, and the Advance Team went everywhere he went. So, we decided to play behind the President and his party. At one point, they finished a par 3 but had parked their cart just out of sight behind the green. Thinking they’d moved on to the next tee box, I hit my ball too far over the green and BAM! My golf ball hit one of the metal bars on the side of the President’s cart—right next to his head. The Secret Service reacted to what they thought was the sound of a gunshot, and after a brief but very tense moment they realized it was just my golf ball. The President was gracious about me hitting his golf cart. In fact, that Christmas I received a golf ball with the Presidential seal on it. That keepsake has obvious sentimental meaning to me. I WAS IN A BAR WHEN I DECIDED TO GO INTO MINISTRY. I was working at a large ad agency, and a client, Coors Brewery, held their trade sales meeting in the French Quarter in New Orleans. The owner, Peter Coors, was doing karaoke in front of hundreds of his sales team, and to my horror, my boss said, “Lawrence, you’re half crazy. Go sing with him!” So there I was—probably the only nondrinker in the entire French Quarter—on stage with Peter Coors singing “Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog.” As I went to sleep that night I thought about what I was accomplishing with

ONE OF THE BIGGEST HONORS I’VE HAD was meeting Reverend Billy Graham. I was in London, England, with then Vice President Bush, and Reverend Graham was there for a series of media interviews, so they arranged some time to visit. While Reverend Graham was waiting for the Vice President to finish with another meeting, I had some time with him in the green room. One of the questions I asked him was, “What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in ministry?” Without hesitation, he said, “I didn’t spend enough time with my family. Never sacrifice your own family on the altar of ministry.” I’ve taken that pearl of wisdom to heart—especially now that I have a wife and two sons. As of this moment, I have 29 Saturdays left before my youngest son leaves home for college. I intend to take Billy Graham’s advice and spend as much time with him as possible. LAST FEBRUARY, FRANKLIN GRAHAM CALLED ME out of the blue. I’d done some media consulting work for him more than a decade ago but hadn’t talked to him in a while. On that call he said, “I have a concern for the moral decay of our country. So in 2016, I’m going to cancel all of our Billy Graham Evangelistic Association global events and focus on our nation. The plan is to hold prayer rallies on the capitol steps of each of the 50 states. At each rally, I’m going to do three things: preach the gospel, call christians to repentance as outlined in 2 Chronicles 7:14, and encourage people to vote for candidates who support biblical values. Lawrence, I want you to oversee this 50-state campaign for God.” So this year, Gateway is graciously allowing me to oversee Franklin Graham’s Decision America Tour. HUNTING IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE HOBBIES. I love the outdoors, and one of my favorite traditions is going out a few days before Thanksgiving and hunting for a wild turkey. I’m not always successful but love the challenge. It tastes better than any Butterball turkey you can get at Kroger, and it’s organic!
