WELCOME

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE NOW THAT THE HOLIDAYS ARE OVER, I

hope you’re looking to 2015 with excitement and anticipation. The new year offers the opportunity to reset our lives, which is why so many of us make resolutions to change things and reorient our focus. I want to encourage you to take a look at the pace of your life. Some of the most important resolutions you can make in 2015 might be slowing down, prioritizing family, and putting God first.

At Gateway, we’re approaching 2015 with some new initiatives as well. We’re making sure our focus is on God and on His work in people’s lives as we define our priorities and begin the initiatives for this year. Each time we stop to review the previous year and plan for the new one, we’re so thankful for all the ways God has used our ministry to bless people. At all of our campuses combined, we helped more than 3,000 people find a life-giving relationship with the Lord in 2014. Many more have gone deeper in their walk with Christ. We’re asking God to give us expanded impact and influence as we minister for Him in 2015.

In this issue of Gateway Life, you’ll find an article about how you can begin the new year at Gateway with a place of involvement and service for you and your family (page 12). You’ll be encouraged by our feature about Gateway Generate, a ministry that disciples and trains young worshippers (page 15). And you’ll enjoy the deep spiritual insights in a special guest article written by Pastor John Spurling (page 10), president of The King’s University (TKU). We are so proud of the work being done at TKU. Be sure to read Pastor John’s article and drop by the University Campus to take a look around. Another thing you’ll find in this issue is exciting information on our churchwide Bless A Life campaign. It’s our desire to express our hearts of generosity into our communities, and we think Bless A Life will enable each of us to demonstrate generosity in practical expressions throughout our daily lives. You’ll find great ideas on how you can participate on page 8. I know you will enjoy this issue of Gateway Life! As we get 2015 started, let’s set our eyes on God and make it our collective heart’s desire to wait on Him to reveal His work in our lives!

“My wife and I recently received some extra money from a work bonus, and after we tithed on it there was still a nice chunk left. Around that time, James Robison was doing a big push to raise money to put water wells in Africa, and we decided to use the rest of the bonus—$4,800—and give two wells. Two weeks later, my company, which was just bought out by another company, sent me a notice. After going over the finances, they decided to reward the employees with the extra money from the buyout. We were expecting a small deposit in our 401k, but do you know how much it was? $48,000! Exactly 10 times what we gave for those water wells! PASTOR ROBERT HAS

Accomplishing an Olympic triathlon a few years ago. I’m pretty competitive with myself, and I just wanted to say I’d done it. I hope to do more in the future. DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES? I enjoy doing floral design. I started doing it a few years ago when a friend needed flowers for her wedding. Some of the moms saw what I’d done and asked me to do flowers for their kids’ weddings. Since then, I’ve done 24 more weddings! SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I’ve been to every state but Alaska. Every summer during my childhood, my family would load up in the Suburban and travel to the Coca-Cola Collectors Club Conventions, which were held all over the United States. RESOLUTION RESTITUTION THE BEST APPROACH TO THE NEW YEAR IS THROUGH REFLECTION

by DR. JOHN SPURLING

A FEW YEARS AGO I TOOK MY FAMILY ON A TRIP to “The Big Apple,” New York City. We only had two days to spend in the city and see the sights, so I booked a hotel near the famed Times Square—where every New Year’s Eve approximately one million people crowd the streets and stand in the cold to mark the end of one year and the dawn of another … out with the old and in with the new! For most Americans, the New Year is a time to look forward. It’s a time to make resolutions about what we hope to achieve in the coming months. In a recent study, the experts tell us approximately 62% of adults surveyed stated that they made New Year’s resolutions last January. At the top of the list were the typical things like “losing weight,” “getting organized,” and “enjoying life more.” These are admirable goals that are most often sincerely pledged at the start of a new year with the hope of a new beginning. Unfortunately, year after year we find only about 8% of those individuals who make New Year’s resolutions actually keep them. What’s more striking is that the word “resolution” comes from the root “to resolve” and simply means, “to make a definite and serious decision to do something.” So, it almost goes without saying that “Houston, we have a problem!” While the marking of the New Year lends itself to thoughts of a fresh start and a new beginning, perhaps we would benefit more from reflecting on what has happened over the past year. Instead of simply looking toward the future and the annual exercise of listing the often empty promises of what we want to do in the coming months, we might be better served this year to first look back. This is precisely what the Lord instructed His people to do as they celebrated their New Year during the feast

of Rosh Hashanah. The feast marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year and ushers in what is commonly known as the “10 Days of Awe” or “10 Days of Repentance.” These are days set aside for introspection and reflection on the mistakes of the past year. The 10 days between the Feast of

As we look with anticipation into the potential for good that awaits us this year, let’s also use this time for personal introspection and, if necessary, repentance. Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) and the High Holy Day known as Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, were provided to allow the children of God to repent. It was also a time to make restitution with anyone they may have wronged in the previous year. And of course, to make sure their lives were right in the eyes of God.

January 10–February 22

Join us for this seven-week series based on Pastor Robert’s life message and bestselling book, The Blessed Life. With new examples, testimonies, and a weekend to hear from Pastor Jimmy Evans, this series will encourage you and challenge the way you think about generosity and living a full, blessed life.

We’d love to see every person at Gateway growing and connecting with others during this time. To find a group that’s right for you or to host a group, visit groups.gatewaypeople.com.

January 11–31

Sometimes after a busy season, we need to slow down, rest, and set our focus on the Lord again. Realigning our priorities to God’s heart and making time to listen to His voice are important things that often go on the back burner, and that’s why, as a church, we are setting aside 21 days to fast and pray. Please pray about how God may want you to fast. If your health allows, consider fasting one meal a day or perhaps a certain type of food. Or you may want to consider fasting things like television, nonessential email, or social media, which can often consume a great amount of time in your daily life. Instead, we encourage you to dedicate time to reading God’s Word, praying, and listening to His direction for your life, your family, or the church in the upcoming year.

RE:GENERATE GATEWAY GENERATE TURNS KIDS INTO TOMORROW’S WORSHIP LEADERS

z

by DANIEL HOPKINS

ERO. THAT'S THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO CAME TO GATEWAY GENERATE'S most recent Night of Worship. Pastors David and Alena Moore and the Generate worship team of young worshippers had worked diligently to decorate and build an elaborate set for the platform in the Southlake Campus Auditorium. It would be their only Night of Worship in 2014, and even the smallest details needed to be perfect. Hundreds of yards of twinkle lights were strung from the rafters, and a small chapel facade was constructed to be the centerpiece of the stage, around which the musicians would play. They rehearsed for weeks and treated it like it was the biggest night of their lives—except nobody came.

GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM  15

David and Alena talk about the night as if it was a success, and in fact it was. Leading up to it, they heard the Lord ask, “Would you go to all this trouble if I was the only One invited?” Without hesitation, they answered, “Yes.” So the team rehearsed for weeks, prepared the room and their hearts, and set up to play for an audience of One. “It was a heart check for all of us,” says David. “But, it ended up being one of the greatest times of worship I’ve ever had. We had a blast!” The team warmly refers to the night as the Generate Night of Worship, “Just for Jesus.” On Friday, February 20, Generate’s Night of Worship will return, and this time everyone is invited. And instead of sending the kids to children’s ministry, families are encouraged to worship together. “There are families with young kids who come to experience the presence of the Lord together,” says David. “It’s even okay if they run around.” Who knows, they might even be Gateway’s next generation of worship leaders.

STARTING FROM SCRATCH Ten years ago, Pastor Thomas Miller saw a need to raise up worshippers, and he enlisted David and Alena to start Gateway Generate. They weren’t on staff at Gateway, but they took the role in a volunteer capacity. The goal was to take young singers and musicians from within Gateway’s community to develop their talents and teach them how to lead a congregation in worship. However, David says it’s never been about music as much as discipleship. “If I had to boil everything we do down to one statement, it’s that we want to know God and to be known by God,” says David. “Playing our instruments has always come second to us.” However, in the beginning, David and Alena had to focus on both the spiritual side and the skill side. During the first audition, 15 teenagers

“IF I HAD TO BOIL EVERYTHING WE DO DOWN TO ONE STATEMENT, IT’S THAT WE WANT TO KNOW GOD AND TO BE KNOWN BY GOD.” 16  JANUARY 2015

showed up. “We had them all play together, and it was just awful,” says David with a laugh. “But we didn’t have any other options, so we called them all back together and said, ‘Congratulations! You made the team!’ Alena and I had to teach them how to play their instruments.” After more than a decade under their leadership, that same group has gone on to be some of the most prominent players and singers at Gateway, leading thousands of people in worship. “It’s the most fulfilling thing to see our team walking out their callings and loving what they’re doing,” says Alena. And now, a new generation of worshippers is coming up.

On Friday, February 20, Generate's Night of Worship will return.

PASSING THE TORCH On a recent Wednesday evening in Southlake, the fresh-faced Generate team sets up to lead worship for Gateway Students. This time, however, David and Alena Moore are nowhere in sight. Instead, Josh Coad, one of the first 15 kids who tried out for Generate a decade ago, is leading the team. He directs the youth with the same skill and confidence of David, his predecessor and now close friend. To his left are Ezra Cohen

and Jessica Sheppard, also original team members. However, on this night, most of the team is made up of exceptional teenagers—one senior whose safety school is Princeton, another senior who has the makings of a drum virtuoso, a freshman who invents new electronic sounds just to use in worship, and more! Just before the service begins, a crowd of kids known as the “Worship Mob” gathers in the hallway. While they won’t be on the platform that night, their job is to blend in with the students in the congregation and lead worship from their seats. The same thing takes place at each of Gateway’s campuses. From the musicians to the Worship

Mob, they all come each week to submit themselves and their talents for worship. The vision has been passed down well. The first generation of Generate is now leading the charge while a new generation is discovering what it means to know God and be known by Him. “You can know a lot about somebody, but they might not know you,” says David. “That’s what we want our team to be known for—being people who know and love God and aren’t satisfied with just being great worship leaders and great musicians. When they go through a hard time they’re found in Jesus. They’re a worshipper through it all.” GL Gateway Generate’s Night of Worship will be on Friday, February 20, at the Southlake Campus. YOU MIGHT BE

FASTING IF… by SHEA TELLEFSEN and DANIEL HOPKINS

You thought about putting a cheeseburger in your blender so you won’t break your liquid-only fast.

You find yourself daydreaming about chocolate.

You know exactly what meal you’re going to eat when the fast is over.

You scour the book of Daniel to see if the Daniel Fast includes smoked brisket. It doesn’t.

You read your Bible at lunchtime and have to skip the part about Jesus feeding the 5,000.

The sound of Pastor Tom Lane’s voice on the audio version of The Blessed Life devotional is the only thing that soothes you.

You keep thinking you hear an earthquake, but it’s just your stomach growling.

You start secretly craving your dog’s treats.

You’ve posted Matthew 4:4 on your mirror: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds the mouth of God.”

Your fingers start to look like hot dogs.

SONG STORY

MARK HARRIS AND THOMAS MILLER’S

“GRACE THAT WON’T LET GO” by DANIEL HOPKINS

SITTING IN A ROOM WITH PASTORS MARK HARRIS AND THOMAS MILLER

is like watching a comedy routine. The two songwriters tell jokes about their own home states (Alabama and West Virginia, respectively) and finish each other’s sentences with hilarious quips. It’s clear they enjoy working together, but their chemistry really shines when they team up to write music. Their newest song, “Grace That Won’t Let Go,” is a perfect example of what happens when two great songwriters are impacted by one of the greatest gifts God has given us: grace. Though the song came to fruition during Pastor Robert’s Amazing Grace series, the idea for it was sparked when Pastor David Moore emailed Gateway songwriters to see if anyone had any songs about grace. “The morning I read the email, a chorus and some verses came to me,” says Mark. “I love how Mark wrote the first two words of the chorus,” adds Thomas. “He flipped the title of the classic hymn.” After Mark and Thomas molded the initial idea into what we hear today, the result has all the power of the centuries-old song with a modern worship sound. “Grace, amazing / Grace, unfailing / Grace that saves my soul. / Grace, unending / Grace, unrelenting / Grace that won’t let go.”

Though both writers worked on the song, they’re quick to give each other a bulk of the credit. However, one thing they both agree on is that something was much different about writing this song. “It didn’t require a lot of work on our part,” says Mark. “Some songs God just gives you. You can go into a writer’s room and work hard, but at the end of the day sometimes God just shows up and says, ‘I’m going to give you a song.’”

“FIVE YEARS FROM NOW WE’LL BE ABLE TO POINT TO THIS SONG AND SAY, ‘THAT WAS A MOMENT WE LIVED IN.’” It debuted the day after it was written—just in time for the second weekend of Pastor Robert’s Amazing Grace series. “That’s the beauty of songs that come from Gateway,” says Thomas. “Five years from now we’ll be able to point to this song and say, ‘That was a moment we lived in.’ Pastor Robert heard the Lord say to do a series on grace, and this song is an outflow of that.” “There’s nothing brilliant about what we did,” says Mark. “God was speaking to us about grace, and we just wrote about it.” “Grace That Won’t Let Go” is available on The Blessed Life: Songs from Gateway Devotions.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 As we look with anticipation into the potential for good that awaits us this year, let’s also use this time for personal introspection and, if necessary, repentance. These are solemn days to listen for the voice of the Lord and make sure that our full affection is directed toward Him. According to the traditions of the Holy Scriptures, this is a time of year for us to take seriously the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near” (Isaiah 55:6). And as you do, be sure to ask the Lord to reveal any relationship in your life that needs restitution. Make the commitment today to not carry broken relationships into the new year. This is the season of new beginnings and the place for you to start is by focusing on the people in your life. Before you look forward and offer up words of resolution about what you aspire to do in the future, pause during these days to look back and search for opportunities to make restitution with others. Then seek out the Lord while He may be found and call upon His name. He will hear you and is more than willing to answer your prayers for a healthy, happy new year! GL Dr. John Spurling is an associate senior pastor at Gateway and the president of The King’s University.

PROFILE

THE PART I LIKE MOST ABOUT TAE KWON DO is the sparring, but there have been a few times when I was glad a sparring match was over. I’ve been kicked pretty hard … but I usually kick right back (laughs). I WAS A BANKER FOR 38 YEARS, and I saw some interesting things. One of the funniest things was when some guy was passing checks from a bogus bank called the West Bank of the Trinity River. I also witnessed four bank robberies. They weren’t like the movies. In fact, we usually didn’t know about them until the robbers left the bank. But there was one that could’ve turned violent. I WASN’T SAVED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 27, 1973. One of the events that led up to it was my wife and me being separated. Our divorce was final on February 13, 1974. This was not an amicable divorce. When I came home from the Marine Corps, I basically was a bulletproof jerk. She just got to the point where she had enough and said, “I’m done.” Over the course of nine months, we were both saved, and God told us individually that we were to be remarried. God healed our marriage, and we just celebrated 45 years!

GAYLAND LAWSHE HAS BEEN AN ASSOCIATE SENIOR PASTOR SINCE 2013 AND AN ELDER SINCE 2006. (HE WAS THE PART-TIME MEN’S PASTOR FROM 2004 TO 2005).

WHEN I WAS ABOUT SEVEN YEARS OLD, my dad knew a man who owned a North American black bear cub. I don’t know how he got the bear, but he asked if we wanted it. And I lobbied pretty hard for it. I walked him in the neighborhood on a leash like a dog. He actually stayed in my bedroom. As he got bigger, he was a little harder to handle. He never hurt me. But after about two and a half years, we gave him to the Forth Worth Zoo. His name was Jim. MY WIFE, SUSAN, AND I are just a few months away from earning our black belts in Tae Kwon Do. Ever since I served in the Marine Corps, I’ve been interested in learning more about hand-to-hand combat. About four years ago, a friend from Gateway invited me to come to a class. My wife wasn’t that interested, but she decided to do it because it’s something we could do together. Now, we both really enjoy it. We’re the oldest in our class. Actually, we’re the oldest in the school!

LONG BEFORE PASTOR ROBERT WROTE THE BLESSED LIFE, I learned some valuable lessons about stewardship. Right after I got saved in the early 1970s, the 700 Club was doing a telethon, and I thought I’d do something good by making a pledge. However, I forgot to pay it. Two decades later—in 1992—God spoke to me at a conference about being a man of integrity. He said, “Do you remember the pledge you made?” I said I did, and He said, “I want you to send them a check for the amount you pledged plus interest.” I calculated the interest for the 20-year-old pledge and thought I can’t afford this, but I sent the check anyway. A few weeks later I got a call from the 700 Club and they invited me to share our story on the show. I got to share about God healing our marriage. The message in The Blessed Life is an important one for people to hear, and I’m grateful I learned a lot of those lessons even though I had to learn some of them the hard way.
