WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE Every summer when my kids were growing up, we’d go on a vacation. Sometimes we would take a big camping trip or go to the mountains in Colorado. We would always drive, and with five kids it wasn’t always restful, but it was fun! We’d go fishing and spend a lot of time outdoors. One particular trip when my youngest son, Matthew, was three or four years old, we loaded up the car and noticed he had a little red spot on his face. We thought what is that? A few hours later, gateway life gatewaylifemag.com David Smith, Thomas Miller, Senior Pastoral Oversight Lawrence Swicegood, Editor-in-Chief project management Tracey Schwellinger

there were more spots, and before long we realized he had chicken pox. When we made it to Colorado it had gotten so bad it looked like he had leprosy. We were staying at a place owned by a friend of mine who was a pediatrician. He came to see Matthew and said, “This is the worst case of chicken pox I’ve ever seen!” The whole vacation became centered around Matthew and his chicken pox. He was scratching so much that we took a pair of onesie pajamas and put them on him backward. Then I had to tape a pair of gloves on his hands so he wouldn’t scratch his face. Do you know the craziest thing about that trip? We had a lot of fun. We didn’t get a lot of rest and were worn out, but the times we had as a family editorial Stacy Burnett, Managing Editor Daniel Hopkins, Senior Writer/Editor Shea Tellefsen, Staff Writer/Editor Katie Smith, Staff Writer Georgette Shuler, Copy Editor art Shane Dennehey, Creative Director Tim Lautensack, Art Director/Designer Megan White, Designer

were amazing! To this day, it’s a good memory for our family. Summer is a great opportunity to make memories with your family. Get creative and do whatever it takes to slow down and spend time together. While you’re slowing down your pace at home, Gateway is ramping up for a season of activities and exciting events. We have summer camps for Amazing Kids as well as Wacky Week, which is Gateway’s version of vacation bible school. For the older kids, we have Gateway Student Conference and opportunities to serve. And for the rest of us, Jimmy Evans will be teaching Tipping Point, an intriguing series on the end times. Along with that, summer Equip will offer classes focused on this series. I encourage you to look at our calendar of events (page 20) and take advantage of all Gateway has to offer you and your family this summer. I hope you come up with some creative ways to make memories with your family, and hopefully none of them will include chicken pox!

Pastor Robert was teaching The Blessed Life series and it reminded me of my son, Justice. A few years ago he asked me to add snacks to his lunch box. When I asked why (he eats a hot lunch at school), he said that he was giving all his snacks away to other kids in aftercare who were hungry! I commented as the ‘budget patrol’ parent and said that I wasn’t putting snacks in his lunch to feed the school! The Holy Spirit spoke then and simply said, ‘Buy extra snacks and stuff his lunch box full. Tell him to give away whatever he wants.’ So I told Justice he had permission to always give away whatever he wanted to those who needed it. The sweetest thing as a parent is to learn from your kids while being trained by the Lord how to show them how to become a blessing. It’s the sweetest thing to hear the excitement in my son’s voice when he tells me who he was able to bless with a snack! In John 6, Jesus uses a boy’s lunch to feed thousands. I love the thought that Justice is learning how to give away what he carries!” “A FEW MONTHS AGO,

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? When I was in high school, I was performing in a local community theatre production of Godspell. It was a small theatre with a stage that was about 12 inches high. As I was singing and in the spotlight, my foot slipped over the edge of the stage, and I landed flat on my face. I stood up, stepped back on the stage, and kept singing. I thought I would die of embarrassment—unfortunately I didn’t! PROUDEST MOMENT? The birth of my children has to be my proudest moment. I have four kids, so I guess I have four proudest moments. HOBBIES? I love to read, and I long to find more time to write. Also, this year I’ve got to figure out how to learn calligraphy. I don’t know why this is important, but I want to be able to make things beautiful. Do you know of a good class? FAVORITE WAY TO RELAX? I enjoy early morning quiet time by the fire, a great movie, or sitting in the backyard watching the bird feeder. As I get older, I’m beginning to understand that a few moments of solitude and peace can restore my soul.

attending Gateway in 2011, I was so hungry for Christ and a more personal relationship with Him that I attended everything Gateway offered. Being a single parent, my son Landon was right there with me. Every Equip class I signed up for, every Gateway Single Adults service, my son was in Amazing Kids! I remember one night, I was exhausted and feeling as though I just couldn’t make it to church, and Landon (6 years old at the time) screamed from the back seat, ‘Mom, what about worship? You may feel like missing, Mama, but I can’t miss!’ You see, I thought that while I was in my classes getting healed from past hurts and pains and becoming equipped with the Word of God that Landon was in another form of ‘childcare.’ Landon showed me that was not the case at all! Feeling guilty and just horrible, I turned to Landon and said, ‘Mommy is sorry for not being in a relationship so that you can have a father.’ Landon said, ‘Mom what are you talking about?’ I said, ‘Yes, I know you have daddy (his earthly father), but I don’t know if you are sad because mommy does not have a father living with us!’ He said so seriously, ‘Yes I do, I have God, Mama.’ And he went back to playing his game. You made it that easy for him. Landon is equipped and ready for anything that the world may try to throw at him. We didn’t really have a plan for a different car but knew we didn’t want to go into debt to get one. So we were content to wait and just drive one car. When I called my grandpa to tell him we wouldn’t need the Lexus after all, he said that he would happily make up the difference between the $15K and whatever our new car cost. WHAT IS A DEACON?

The deacon’s role was originally created because those ministering in the New Testament often had to stop feeding the flock spiritually to take care of things like collecting offerings or maintaining the church building. So the ministers asked for people to come alongside them and help with the physical administration of the church. The word “deacon” is translated from the Greek word diakoneo, which means, “to serve, wait on, help, or attend to.” The deacons at Gateway exemplify what it means to be “all about people.” We have 175 deacons serving at Gateway.

WHO CAN BE A DEACON?

The Bible calls for deacons to meet the highest spiritual, moral, and practical qualifications, which can be found in Acts 6 and 1 Timothy 3. They must be full of the Holy Spirit, wisdom, and faith. They must also be sincere, be worthy of respect, not indulge in much wine, not pursue dishonest gain, be the husband or wife of one spouse, and manage their home well.

WHAT DO THEY DO?

From coordinating communion to training volunteers to greeting weekend guests to praying for people, our deacons oversee the Guest Experience volunteer teams for weekend services. This includes the parking lot team, door greeters, Fresh Start team, Serve (volunteer) Lounge hosts, supply team, Guest Central hosts, Welcome Center hosts, communion teams, and ushers.

H

OW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE the culture of your home? A culture is the normal order by which we understand ourselves, others, the world, and how things work. Whether or not you realize it, fathers play a key role in determining the culture of a home. And creating a culture of godliness is one of the most important things fathers can do for their children. Think of it like this: Your kids get to grow up in a place where it’s normal to seek God, pray for each other, spend less than we make, say we’re sorry, reconcile our relationships, tell the truth, and participate in all manner of strangely wonderful behavior. We want our children’s “normal” to reflect what God considers normal, rather than what our culture says life should be like. And a huge part of life is our personal relationships. God directed much of the scriptures to instruct us about how to get along with each other. You can sum it up in one word: communication. With Christ as his model, Paul wrote in Philippians 2:3–4 (NIV), “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” So, when you apply this verse to your relationship with your children, it essentially says what you think is important, but what your children think is more important. Valuing what our children say is one of the biggest ways to lay our lives down for our kids. The way we listen to our kids reflects this. It’s how we affirm and encourage them when they

are right and lovingly correct them when they are wrong. Christlike communication puts the greater emphasis on what the other person says, rather than what I am saying. In other words, it matters more to hear than to be heard. James 1:19 (NIV) puts it this way: “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” If our culture at home becomes oriented around this, it will be a game changer. People get along with each other best when there is transparent communication. But it’s not easy. Dr. Albert Mehrabian says 7% of any verbal message is conveyed by words, 38% by vocal elements, and 55% by nonverbal elements. The likelihood of miscommunication is staggering. Dr. Mehrabian’s research confirms that what is not being said communicates more profoundly than what is being said. Sadly, one of the things commonly communicated is parents don’t care what their children think. While they would never say that with words, it is often communicated either by distraction or absence. The opposite of love is not hate—it’s indifference. So what makes your children feel cared for? Primarily this: knowing that a person who is important to them cares deeply for the issues of their heart, and believing the things which are significant in their lives deeply matter to dad and mom. In short, children want to be heard. And dad, you’re the man for the job.

“IF OUR CULTURE AT HOME BECOMES ORIENTED AROUND THIS, IT WILL BE A GAME CHANGER.”

4 TIPS FOR LISTENING TO YOUR KIDS Now that we’ve discussed the importance of listening to our kids, putting it into practice may seem difficult. However, there are simple ways that you can begin opening up new lines of communication with your kids. And in turn, improve the culture of your home. Here’s how you can listen intently to your children: 1

FOCUS

Look your child in the eye when he or she speaks. Turn off the TV; don’t answer the phone. This communicates to them that what they are saying is the most important thing on earth to you. 2

ASK

Ask open-ended, curious questions such as, “How did that make you feel?” “What do you suppose the consequences of that decision might be?” and “Will the end result of that action be success or failure?” In so doing, you will train your children to think well and value God above their own desires. 3

ENCOURAGE

To encourage is to put courage in; to discourage is to take courage out. We all need encouragement, especially our kids. Tell them you love them and believe in them. Remind them a good name is better than great riches (Proverbs 22:1). 4

IMPART

You are God’s primary channel of spiritual blessings to your children. At the end of a conversation, put your hands on their shoulders and ask God to pour Himself into them. GL Marcus Brecheen is the executive pastor of the Gateway North Fort Worth Campus. He and his wife, Lexa, have five children.

They grabbed a guitar, ducked into an empty office, and Walker played an early version of the song. Mark loved it, but there was a problem. The two WHEN PASTOR WALKER BEACH MOVED

songwriters couldn’t get their schedules to line up. But instead of waiting until they had more time, they simply picked up the phone. “Together, we wrote half the song over the phone,” says Walker. “It was the most phone writing I’ve ever done, but I really enjoyed it.” “Life Worth Living” has a joyful sound with an upbeat, bluegrass feel. The rhythm moves at a faster pace than most contemporary praise songs, and the production gives it the feel of a country jamboree rather than a church service. Voices hoop and holler in the background, just like the voices in Walker’s living room when he sings with his family. The lyrics are just as much fun. The song starts out by saying “Joy, this is joy / You have taken my sadness and given me songs of praise / Love, this is love / You have given me gladness and nothing can take that away.” Then, the chorus invites the congregation to take action: “I’m shouting out how great You are / Praising You with all my heart / God, You’re so amazing / You make life worth living.” Walker says it’s more than just a praise song. It’s about finding contentment no matter what your circumstances are. “When we moved into the apartment it was just temporary. We were in a season of not knowing exactly where we were going to go next,” he says. “But I decided I’m going to be content and have fun with my God, wife, kids, and church—and I’m just going to enjoy this.” GL “Life Worth Living” is available on The Blessed Life: Songs from Gateway Devotions, at the Gateway Bookstore and on iTunes.

GATEWAY TAKES THE CLASSIC MUSICAL GODSPELL INTO THE COMMUNITY by Daniel Hopkins

in the upper room tonight. Actually, several guys are auditioning for the role of Jesus in Godspell. It’s late, and we’re upstairs in the Southlake Campus performing arts studio (yes, we actually have one of those). Director Erik Snodgrass and several other judges sit behind a long table—American Idol style—while the actors do their best to be like Jesus.

Some project their voices and exaggerate their movements, while others try to focus on hitting their notes and remembering their lines. Getting everything just right is more difficult than it looks, even though the musical is a well-known classic. Opening off Broadway in 1971, it’s been revived on and off Broadway many times over the decades, most recently in the critically acclaimed 2012 Broadway revival. The show follows Jesus and

His disciples through a series of stories and parables recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. However, rather than being set in ancient Israel, the original 1971 version uniquely depicted Jesus and His followers as hippie clowns. For this updated version of the show, Gateway has chosen to set the musical in a modern-day coffee shop, complete with a barista Jesus and a live house band, while keeping the original script completely intact.

ABOUT GODSPELL Godspell is a contemporary retelling of the Gospels According to Matthew and Luke. The version of the show Gateway Performing Arts is putting on this summer is based on the 2012 Broadway revival, which includes completely updated arrangements of all the classic songs from the original Tony-nominated musical written by Stephen Schwartz (composer of numerous hit musicals and films including Wicked, The Prince of Egypt, Pocahontas, Pippin, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Enchanted). The title of the show comes from the Old Saxon spelling of the word “gospel,” meaning “good story.” Set in a modern-day coffeehouse, the story follows Jesus as He calls individuals from diverse backgrounds to follow Him and teaches them various lessons via modern methods of storytelling, including celebrity impressions, current pop culture references, songs, dances, and lots of comedy and fun. The show features various musical styles, including rock ‘n’ roll, pop, R&B, ragtime, and rap. The cast also occasionally plays their own instruments and uses props such as ladders, newspapers, and more to further enhance their storytelling. The result is an overall tone that’s fresh, playful, and improvised, yet also moving and meaningful.

BLESSING BABYLON HOW TO BE A LIGHT IN A DARK WORLD

by PASTOR JASON LAIRD

18  JUNE 2015

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? What about your favorite song? Do you have a favorite restaurant you find yourself constantly gravitating toward? For me, all I need is a Brad Pitt movie (fellas, don’t judge me), a Miles Davis record, and some tacos, and I’m a happy camper! There’s something about favorites that keep us coming back over and over again no matter how many times we experience them. This principle is true when it comes to scriptures in the Bible. As I read it, I find myself returning to a few favorites. One of them is Jeremiah 29:11, which says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.’” I love the encouraging message in this verse. God has a plan for His people. It’s a good plan—full of prosperity, hope, and a bright future. I’ve quoted this verse for years, but as I studied the context of Jeremiah, I realized I was missing the whole point. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not saying God doesn’t want us to be blessed. But consider the context of Jeremiah 29. God’s people (the Jews) had been deported from their homeland and were living in exile in Babylon. It was a wicked, dark city, and it hosted a culture that couldn’t be any more countercultural to the kingdom of God. The Babylonians’ plan was to take the best and brightest of God’s people—the craftsmen, artisans, and leaders who shaped Jerusalem—and plant them in the middle of Babylon in an effort to get them to conform. Well, because these were pretty smart people, their defense plan was to stay out of Babylon and set up shop on the outskirts of the city so they could preserve their values, culture, and traditions. As a plan to resist the conformity, they became separatists. Then God sent a message through

the prophet Jeremiah. In Jeremiah 29:1–10, God rolled out a new, unexpected plan for His people. He told them to move into the city, build houses, live out their values and culture, grow their families, and represent God. But in verse seven, God took it a step further by telling them to, “Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper” (emphasis added). God challenged them to embrace the place He had set them in, live out the values and ways of God, and seek to be a blessing to Babylon. And later, in verse eleven, He encouraged them by saying He would take care of their future. This idea of being set in the middle of a dark place to be a blessing, a light, a representative of God sounds familiar doesn’t it? It’s seen throughout Jesus’ teachings as well as other parts of the New Testament. I’m going to be candid with you. I often find myself seeking and praying for the peace and prosperity of me, myself

and I. Rarely do I find myself caught up seeking the peace and prosperity of others. That’s why I love verse seven. It challenges me to live for more than just myself and for the well-being of my family.

So what does it mean to “seek the peace and prosperity” in the place God has sent us? Peace means wholeness, well-being, and completeness, while prosperity means value, wealth, and richness. I believe God’s people—wherever they are, whatever neighborhood they live in, whatever workplace or school they may be in—have been placed there by God to seek the peace and prosperity of others by serving and blessing people with no strings attached. It’s how we represent His heart toward humanity. I truly believe God’s people are called to add value by contributing, not just consuming. God’s people should make every place better and brighter as a result of their presence. Most importantly, the people of God should pray for and spiritually enrich that place. So let me ask you this: Where has God placed you? Where is your Babylon? Here is my encouragement to you: Don’t be so worried about your future that you never take your place. God placed you there, so embrace it and let Him use you. Let’s make a commitment as the people of God that we will “seek the peace and prosperity” of the places He has set us in and allow Him to use us to make a difference in Jesus’ name. GL Jason Laird is the executive pastor of Gateway Students. The Gateway Student Conference will be held July 22–24 at the Southlake Campus. For more information, visit gatewaystudentconference.com.

PROFILE

of starting a Bible school with Shady Grove, I helped launch one in Odessa, Ukraine, and my wife, Bonnie, and I later lived there for three years.

WAYNE WILKS JR. WAYNE WILKS JR. IS THE PASTOR OF JEWISH MINISTRIES AT GATEWAY AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE MESSIANIC JEWISH BIBLE INSTITUTE. HE AND HIS WIFE, BONNIE, HAVE A DAUGHTER, JULIA.

I’M A TEXAN THROUGH AND THROUGH. It’s kind of in my blood. My family has been in Texas for five generations. I hope I don’t carry a swagger as far as pride, but I’m definitely Texan—there’s no question about it. PASTOR ROBERT AND I had the privilege of growing up in ministry under Pastor Olen Griffing. We were all elders together, and as we studied the Word together in one of those early elders’ meetings, the Lord unfolded this truth: to the Jew first. For me, it was like deciding on a major in college. The Lord was saying, “What do you want to major in for the rest of your life?” I said, “Lord, I want to serve the Jewish people.” I saw my life as a breath and I decided to give it to one thing. I felt the Lord say, “You’re on!” EDUCATION HAS PLAYED A BIG ROLE in my life. I got my doctorate degree when I was working at Shady Grove, and the elders—including Pastor Robert—were all very supportive. The plan was to start a Bible college at Shady Grove. I had a real vision for it, but I also had a love for missions. I wasn’t sure how God would reconcile the two, but when I graduated with my PhD at the University of North Texas, an opportunity arose with the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute (MJBI). A group of Messianic Jewish leaders saw a tremendous need to educate young Messianic leaders in the former Soviet Union. So within a year of my graduation, instead

28  JUNE 2015

BONNIE AND I HAVE BEEN MARRIED for 32 years. Before we met, I was serving as a singles minister at a Church of Christ church in Amarillo and teaching Bible at Amarillo College. However, I had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit at Shady Grove when I was home from college, and it really changed my path. I returned to Shady Grove not knowing what was next. Bonnie had just returned from a kibbutz (farming community) in Israel, where she served as a volunteer. That’s when we met, and we were married a year later. BONNIE SPEAKS HEBREW, and she already had a strong burden for Israel when we met. She learned Hebrew at Christ For The Nations Institute a few years earlier. She wanted to study Greek, but the class was full so she signed up for Hebrew instead. Through that class, she went to Israel for two and a half years. When we were engaged, her mother asked her, “Wayne is a wonderful guy, but are you sure you’re supposed to marry him? He doesn’t have a calling to the Jewish people.” Bonnie replied, “I know he loves God, and he’ll do whatever God tells him to do.” Not long after that, God began to give me a burden for Israel. THE FIRST TIME I PREACHED IN POLAND, it was summertime so I wore a light tan suit. We pulled up to the church, and when we got out I realized I had sat right on a melted chocolate bar. It was smeared all over my pants, and it looked bad. This big, elderly Polish woman grabbed me with authority and took me to the bathroom inside the church. She began to vigorously clean off the chocolate. It was embarrassing and funny at the same time!
