times of the year and it’s because I get to spend time with my family. We all get together for a traditional Thanksgiving meal with turkey, dressing, and dumplings and watch the Dallas Cowboys. It’s also during this time that I like to think about what it means to give thanks. I’m reminded that an attitude of gratitude isn’t just a

one-day-a-year celebration but rather a daily lifestyle. Jesus is the perfect example of someone who had a lifestyle of thanksgiving. Every time He ate, He gave thanks. And when the disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray, He said, “Give us this day our daily bread.” He was trying to impart an attitude to His disciples. He was essentially saying, “Guys, this is a miracle. I want you to understand that God provided this food for us.” Here in America, this concept is often difficult for us to imagine, but that’s the reason God wants us to give Him thanks. If we remind ourselves

every day that God provided us with everything we have, our attitude will change to one of thanksgiving. So rather than spending a day in November thinking about all the things for which we’re thankful, I want to encourage you to be thankful every day, and it starts with acknowledging that God is your provider. This month’s issue of Gateway Life has some amazing stories of God’s provision. You’ll read about the Wilks family on their journey of adopting Julia and meeting her birth mother several years later (page 10). We’re honoring our veterans by sharing some of their personal stories in our Veterans Day article (page 14), and our cover story offers a timely reminder to unplug and be more engaged with your family during the holidays (page 12). As we approach one of the busiest times of the year, I want to encourage you to look for opportunities to be thankful. You might be surprised at how many you find and how much an attitude of gratitude can change your life.

“Over the past 12 months, we have lost a brother and a sister and recently raced to the ER when my husband’s blood pressure soared past ‘hypertensive crisis.’ I am so incredibly grateful to our Gateway family for continually lifting us up in prayer this year. It has helped beyond measure. Thank you for living ‘we’re all about people.’ I’m happy to report my husband is feeling much better!” Georgette Shuler | via Email
I was diagnosed with aggressive stage 2 breast cancer. This happened shortly after my 36th birthday and only six months after we moved here from New York. We had to process the news with no family around and just a few acquaintances! We learned that my breast cancer was one of the most aggressive types, and I just didn’t understand how God could allow such devastation to happen in my life. Right after the diagnosis, we had very little information to work with, which allowed our minds to

That weekend, I mustered the strength to go to church with my family, and Pastor Robert encouraged everyone to download the myGateway app and use it to connect with other believers and intercede for one another! On our way home, my husband and I both downloaded the app and separately posted a prayer request regarding my situation. As the day progressed,
prayers were trickling in. That night, my husband and I stayed up crying and praying. All night both our phones kept buzzing. I remember thinking, Who in the world is texting us in the middle of the night? It was our Gateway family praying for us all night long through the myGateway app! That Monday morning, we both knew I was going to be okay. I went through surgery for lymph node removal, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Today, a full year later, I am completely healed! WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? A spy, professional golfer, and film director. All at the same time. WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD? Anytime there is a tense moment, my daughter Lo will sing the Nationwide commercial jingle, and it always makes us laugh. PROUDEST MOMENT? Each time my kids hear God’s voice. It’s the only real way to prepare them for life and adulthood. God speaks truth to them when their friends make fun of them. He speaks life into them when they are discouraged, He speaks destiny into their futures, and He gives them empathy and causes them to care deeply for those who are hurting. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE? When people talk during a movie. WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE DAY? Playing golf with my wife and kids, which has actually become our Sunday afternoon tradition.

“I was working at the Southlake bookstore for the Gateway Conference, and I met a guest from Louisiana. We had a terrible time finding a particular book she wanted and then getting her set up to have it shipped to her house. We eventually got it figured out, and when we had, she told me that Gateway was unique to any other church because everyone she asked for help here went above and beyond to help her with even the tiniest requests. She told me that never in her life has she gotten service like this from any church, restaurant, or business. She was especially impressed that our staff and volunteers would actually walk with her to find someone who could help her. She wanted to make sure that all Gateway staff and volunteers know how important they are to the guest experience. It is because of them that Gateway is an oasis for all who need to be refreshed and equipped.” Jennifer Howard | via Email

Two Worlds Collide An adopted daughter travels to Guatemala to meet her birth mother. by Bonnie Saul Wilks
10  NOVEMBER 2015
F
OR MANY YEARS WHEN MY HUSBAND WAYNE (pastor of Gateway’s Jewish Ministries) put our daughter Julia to bed, he told her a bedtime story. It went something like this: “Mama and daddy got married and couldn’t have children. We prayed and prayed for God to bring us a child. God looked all over the whole world and found the perfect baby in Guatemala for our family and brought her to us. She made us so happy.” Julia loved the story and asked us to tell it to her over and over when she was little. Julia celebrates two birthdays—the day she was born in Guatemala and the day we brought her home to the States. The latter we call her “Happy Day.” And growing up, she felt privileged to have two days—not one. Wayne and I tried to make her experience full of joy and adventure. The whole concept of adoption is very spiritual. After all, we are all adopted children born into God’s kingdom of light. Several years ago, when Julia was 21, the three of us traveled to Guatemala to meet Julia’s birth mother, Estella, and seven siblings for the first time. It was a moment of reunion and revelation—full of laughter and tears as we learned the story that brought Julia to us. Estella was born in San Marcos, a Guatemalan state next to Mexico. There were 18 children born to her mother— only 10 lived. Four died at birth and four died later. Estella was the seventh of the 10. Her father was a poor farmer and died when she was 11. At that time, Estella’s mother sent her to Guatemala City to live and work for a family. She never returned home and has worked as a maid in various places since then. She conceived a son and later met and married Julia’s father, Carlos. Together Carlos and Estella had another son and two girls, but their life was very difficult. They lived with Carlos’s family who didn’t like Estella.
Julia and her birth mother, Estella.
“Although it was hard giving Julia up for adoption, it was a very loving thing for Estella to do.” They treated her badly and told lies about her. When she became pregnant with Julia, Carlos’s mother convinced him the baby was not his. He threatened if Estella had the baby, he’d kill her and strangle the baby. She lived in fear and said it was the most difficult time of her life. Carlos began to drink heavily and stayed drunk most of the time. He beat Estella and told her repeatedly to abort the baby. She fled for her life, saved the baby, and didn’t know what to do but give her up for adoption. She got in touch with a lawyer, and he contacted Shady Grove Church (now the Gateway Grand Prairie Campus) to ask if anyone wanted to adopt a baby. We contacted the lawyer immediately, and then one day he called to say that a girl had been born to Estella. He said, “I have her birth certificate in front of me. What do you want to name her?” Well, we had prayed and already knew her name: Julia Elizabeth. It took another six months before all the red tape of adoption was clear. We flew to Guatemala City and brought her home. After hearing Estella’s story, we understand more than ever that Julia’s life had been “snatched out of the mouth of a lion.” Those are the very words God put in my heart as we interceded for a breakthrough in those months we waited for Julia to become ours. Both Julia and Estella’s lives were in jeopardy. And although it was hard giving

UNPLUGGED Staying focused on the present during a season of distractions by Matt Knisely
THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS WRAPPED IN A
flurry of activity. It’s a time for friends and family, creating memories, and celebrating together. It’s a time for “stopping down” and connecting with the people you care about most. However, it’s a season where time seems scarce and distractions are plentiful.
12 NOVEMBER 2015
It points to one of life’s biggest paradoxes: Your future depends on your ability to pay attention to the present. Studies show that living in the present makes you happier and more successful, but what are some practical steps we can take to live in the moment—especially during such a busy season? I’m passionate about not only living in the present but also capturing it. It’s the photographer in me, and I find the decisive moment is a powerful metaphor for life. This term describes the split second photographers have to capture a subject in a perfect moment, whether it’s a child’s face upon opening a gift or a couple sharing a kiss. It’s intense. It’s beautiful. In life, we all have the opportunity to catch decisive moments each day. Our soul snaps an internal picture forever engraving in our memory what it was that suddenly caught our attention,
grabbed our hearts, and made us think. But how often do the moments pass us by unnoticed? Finding them is hard work and it means avoiding distractions. It’s a process that sizes up the situation, subject, and story by anticipating and watching how the action unfolds. So when the moment happens, when everything suddenly comes into focus, we can give the moment the attention it deserves. Click! But when distractions come in— many times in the form of smartphones and social media—we find ourselves disconnected and out of focus, keeping us from the beautiful moments and faces right in front of us. It’s difficult to stay focused on a moment when everything else in our world is fighting for our attention. Putting down your phone, freeing yourself from the social media frenzy, and trying to discover how life is unfolding in the present can feel impossible, but there are simple
ways to be more attentive and live in the moment. Sitting down to rest, taking a walk, or even eating a meal are all in-themoment practices. They’re activities you can do no matter where you are, at any time, by just focusing on the present. The bench you’re sitting on, the path you’re walking on, the food you’re eating—see them as your subjects. By doing this regularly, you’ll discover that presence of mind comes more naturally with time. As a photographer, I believe a life worth living is a life worth recording. Social media has its place and value in our world. It allows us to be connected to so many people at a moment’s notice and to record the highlights of our lives, but it needs to be managed so that media is not our sole subject and, rather, the person, place, or thing we’re talking about is. It is more important to be present with the people right in front of us and to have deep and meaningful relationships—to get to know our subjects—than it is to get a picture posted somewhere instantly and settling for that one-touch interaction. In many ways, we thrive on distractions, but so often they keep our focus away from what’s truly important. We move from activity to activity, resting momentarily before becoming bored, only to move on to the next source of pleasure. Today, let us recapture some lost time we have spent on trivial things and allow ourselves to stop for a moment. During this coming holiday season, take a deep breath and avoid distractions so you can focus on what is truly important: the present. GL Matt Knisely is the lead creative director in Gateway’s Media & Communications Department, and his book, Framing Faith, can be purchased in the Gateway Bookstore, on Amazon.com, and at Barnes & Noble.

VETERANS DAY IS NOVEMBER 11. IT’S A DAY TO THANK ALL THOSE WHO ARE SERVING OR HAVE SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES. Heroes—men and women—serve among us every day. More than 21.8 million Americans in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard have sacrificed or are sacrificing daily their safety and security to give us freedom. Each veteran has a unique story. And this Veterans Day, Gateway wants to honor them by sharing some of their experiences. TOMMY BRIGGS (YEARS SERVED: 1956–1960) “In my day, the military draft was enforced. Sooner or later you were going to be called to service because the Korean War was going on, and there were several other conflicts taking place. I decided to join the Air Force to avoid the draft and started my four years of service on February 2, 1956. I was assigned to a wonderful place called Thule Air Force Base, Greenland. At that time, it was a strategic point and refueling spot between the United States and Russia. There was a saying about the Thule Air Force Base: ‘There’s a girl behind every tree.’ But there are no trees in Thule, Greenland. I spent a whole year there, and then I came back to Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia. That’s where I found the Lord. One night, because of a tragedy in my own personal life, I decided I was going to commit suicide. I had attended a church in the area occasionally, and I had the church bulletin on the seat of my car. I left the base at 10:00 pm and was going to drive off a bridge. But I thought, If I’m going to take my own life and meet God, I better find out if I’m all right. So I found the pastor’s house, and I found the Lord.” Tommy Briggs is the associate pastor of Freedom Ministries at Gateway and has three married children and 10 grandchildren.
BOB ROTH (YEARS SERVED: 1972–1978) “I was in the Air Force and then the Army. For some of my time in the Air Force, I was assigned to a Security Police Squadron at Da Nang Air Base in Vietnam in 1972. At that time, there was a lot of incoming rocket fire, and my job was to patrol the perimeter at Da Nang, also known as ‘Rocket City.’ I was glad to get out of there alive when I was reassigned to U-Tapao Air Base in Thailand. I was not a believer when I was in the military, although I had a praying grandmother back home who would tell me that she prayed for me every day. I would say, ‘Okay, Grandma I got it,’ but I think her prayers really kept me from becoming a casualty. I became born again in 1987, and soon afterward I was asked to start a veterans ministry at the church we attended, but I didn’t feel equipped for it yet. When we moved to Texas, I started doing one-on-one sessions with veterans through Point Man Ministries, and I realized I had an anointing to work with combat vets who were coming back from any war. I became a certified marriage and family therapist and had some training in how to minister and counsel veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Now I’m facilitating the Reveille group here at Gateway with my wife.” Bob Roth and his wife, Julie, have been attending Gateway since 2005.
GEORGE GARRIOTT (YEARS SERVED: 1979–2001) “My father was in the United States Air Force, and he retired from the Air Force in France, which was where he met my mother after the liberation of Paris. After retiring, he oversaw all of the US military cemeteries abroad. So

I was born and raised in France. And I’d wake up every morning, look out my bedroom window, and see a garden of stones and thousands of crosses of American servicemen who were killed in World War I and II and laid to rest in Europe. I earned a law degree, but I’d always wanted to serve my country, so instead of practicing law, I joined the Army and became a Green Beret, which was a lifelong dream. Their motto “De Oppresso Liber” says it all, “To Liberate the Oppressed.” In 1980, I became a born again Christian. Then I was deployed to Grenada and received a Purple Heart. After that I served in several conflicts and classified missions all over the world even after I came back to the States and joined the Reserves. I got out of the military in 2001—before 9/11. I was called up again after 9/11 and asked if I wanted to go. It was a hard choice, but I had a wife and four daughters, one of whom was a baby. So I stopped there. Being a veteran is knowing a lot and not being able to share much. Even with my wife. I think that’s the hardest thing. But I’ve seen

and learned so much. I’ve been in so many places, and I love serving my country. I love my country.” George Garriott and his wife, Kay, have been attending Gateway for almost 10 years and have four daughters.
SEAN TURNER (YEARS SERVED: 2008–2014) “I enlisted in the Army my second year of college. I joined the Infantry and deployed to Iraq immediately after graduating from basic training. My time in Iraq was tumultuous. Twelve months in a desert with nightly missions, sleeping a couple hours a day, sandstorms, and living out of a bag with only your toothbrush, iPod, sleepsack, and ammo—lots of ammo. There is no way anyone could ever convince me that God does not watch out for His children. The whole experience made me grateful for the peace and convenience we have in America. You don’t realize how much spiritual warfare goes on until you’re back here
in the States within the borders of a country blessed by God. After returning from my deployment in Iraq, I finished college and got engaged to Lauren, whom I met at Gateway. When I was called to go on a tour to Afghanistan, Lauren and I made the decision to push up our wedding date and get married before I left. It was the best day of my life. Several days before we were supposed to deploy, the commander called me and asked if I would extend my contract while in Afghanistan or not deploy at all. It was a truly difficult decision to make; as a sergeant, I had trained the young soldiers this time and felt a commitment to them, but I also felt a commitment to my new spouse! Ultimately, I stayed home. I knew God had a plan and a place for me to serve here in Texas.” GL Sean Turner and his wife, Lauren, have been attending Gateway since 2003 and have a one-year-old daughter, Zoey. Gateway has a new group for men and women veterans called Reveille. This ministry provides a safe place for understanding, support, and healing for veterans and their families. RITA SPRINGER AND MIA FIELDES’
“you never change” by KATIE SMITH
THREE YEARS AGO, WHEN RITA AND HER SON,
Justice, came to be a part of Gateway Church, they moved into a home that had a boxy, glassed-in solarium in the front. Not a plant lady, Rita thought, What in the world am I going to do with that box? She soon realized the only thing that fit in there is her piano, and when she closes the door, it’s like her own personal studio space. It was in this room that she heard the Lord ask her to write a simple song about His goodness. And it was in this room that she sought Him in a particularly difficult season. Before this, Rita had been hearing God prompt her to adopt again, 10 years after adopting Justice. She sought counsel and knew God was speaking to her about simply trusting Him in this decision. But when she was well into the process of adopting a new baby, it didn’t turn out the way she thought. “The Lord gave the baby to somebody
else. It was the kind of thing where you have to turn back to the Lord and cry, ‘Even in the why, in the middle of the night, I will say You are good.’” In her solarium-turned-studio, those words became lyrics for “You Never Change.” The song served as a real and vulnerable prayer to the Lord. Soon she called fellow songwriter Mia Fieldes for help writing a bridge. “It wasn’t this beautiful packaged song with all the t’s crossed and i’s dotted. It was just this raw, emotional thing,” Rita says. “And sometimes you just need to say it the way it feels. It doesn’t need to be all packaged and neat.” The song’s lyrics are guided by her own experiences, but their unprocessed simplicity is something we can all connect with. The chorus says, “You are good and You never change, God” several times. You can’t help but notice the repetition, and Rita had a reason for it. Like verse two says, “When the
arrows fly,” difficult times will come for all of us, and in those times, there’s power in declaring God’s truth over and over. “Once you get to that simple chorus, you don’t need to say anything else. He is good,” Rita says. Although the song is simple, it packs a powerful spiritual punch. “I think certain songs can become life rafts we climb into when we find ourselves in the middle of a storm—when we’ve been shipwrecked by circumstances,” Rita says, “But the song helps us realize there’s always rescue in Christ. That’s what this song was to me. And I believe it’s something people at Gateway can relate to as well.” GL “You Never Change” is available on Gateway Worship’s new album, Walls.

10 Steps to Throwing a
Spectacular Holiday Party MY JOB INCLUDES PLANNING EVENTS, and I’ve figured out that events are really just big parties. I define a party as any fun
gathering with food, so it could be anything from a baby shower, a book club, or a Gateway Group to a Christmas party, men’s conference, or wedding. After planning many parties over the years, I’ve learned some great tricks that can help make any party spectacular!
1. DEVELOP A GOOD PLAN. What’s the main goal of your party? Establish the vision at the very beginning. Your plan can be simple or elaborate, just make sure you can wrap your mind around it before you start inviting guests. Plan to send invitations at least two weeks before the event. As the scale of the event increases, so does the timeline for invitations. For example, allow two weeks for a casual dinner party and eight weeks for a wedding.
18 NOVEMBER 2015
2. BE SURE YOU CAN PULL OFF YOUR PLAN. If you have time to handcraft invitations that match the food cards that match the décor that match the party favors that all tie into the thank you notes, then go for it! But don’t shoot for all of these if you feel tight on time or your budget doesn’t allow. It will only stress you out! Keep your plan attainable.
3. HAVE SOMETHING FOR PEOPLE TO DO. This is especially important if many of your guests don’t know each other. Nothing is more boring or awkward than standing around uncomfortably at a party with no one to talk to. So make sure you have a game or project for people to do at their leisure. Who knows, maybe your junior high bestie and high school bestie will become fast friends fighting over the best gift at the white elephant gift exchange!
4. DEVELOP A TIMELINE FOR YOUR EVENT. I plan my preparation according to when everything needs to be finished and work backward from there, so I always start with developing a timeline. Annual Christmas Ornament Exchange 6:00–7:00 pm | Guests arrive and go through buffet 7:00–7:30 pm | Ornament swap ·· Be sure to have a trash can close by. ·· Have each person share why they chose the ornament they brought.
6. BUILD TIME INTO YOUR PARTY SCHEDULE TO GET YOURSELF READY. My party mantra is “If you feel good about yourself, you’ll feel good about your event!” Guys don’t seem to appreciate this as much as girls do. It’s amazing the difference it makes when you take 30 minutes to freshen up before your event. When I don’t make time for myself, I feel off and self-conscious—it’s worth starting 30 minutes earlier.
7:30–8:30 pm | Games and dessert 8:30–9:00 pm | Let people mingle Based on this example, I’d want to be ready to receive my guests at 5:30 pm and would need to be pulling food out of the oven at 5:50 so that it would still be hot when people arrive. Do as much as you can the night before (setting tables, placing décor, cooking in advance), that way you can leave the last-minute details for the party. I always put notes of things I need to remember during the party on my timeline so I remember to do them.
7. BE READY FOR YOUR GUESTS. Be ready for your guests to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the party is scheduled to start. This way you’ll be ready for that friend who is always conveniently early, and you won’t be frazzled when someone rings the doorbell and your wet hair is in a towel.
5. DELICIOUS FOOD IS A MUST. Whether you cook it, bake it, or have it delivered, make sure your food is good and that people don’t leave hungry. People always associate a full tummy with a fun party! And hopefully you’ll have great leftovers for a few days!
8. WELCOME YOUR GUESTS AS THEY ARRIVE. This might seem basic, but there’s nothing more awkward than walking into a stranger’s house and having to figure out where to put your gift or find some water. The best welcome in my book is a hello, a smile,
and a refreshment! If your guests don’t know everyone, make sure to introduce them to each other. A little trick I use is to not only tell guests each other’s names but also give a little fact about each of them so they can find common ground quickly.
9. RECRUIT “COVERT” HOSTS. I like to enlist my good friends who can work a room to help make sure no one feels alone or isolated. I ask them if they would be willing to include or sit by guests who might not know anyone. You’ll be amazed how much pressure this takes off you and how much more fun your guests will have as a result.
10. HAVE FUN! If you’re not having fun, your guests will notice. Sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned, and that’s okay! Just step away for a second, take a deep breath, and ask Jesus to change your attitude. Whether the problem is spilled apple cider or burned cookies, just remember that parties are what you make them. Put on your best smile and get back out there and join in the fun with your friends! Parties are my favorite, and I hope these tips help you enjoy throwing them as much as you love attending them! GL Taken from the fall 2014 issue of Studio G.

GATEWAY ANNOUNCES DALLAS CAMPUS
We’re excited to announce our next extension campus will be in Dallas! Our Dallas Campus pastor will be Tom Lane, and David Moore will serve as the worship pastor. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 Julia up for adoption, it was a very loving thing for Estella to do. She could have aborted her out of fear, but God had other plans for our Julia. Ten years ago, Estella heard the gospel and repented of her sins. She became a true believer. She prayed to meet Julia one time in her life. And God answered that prayer. One of the most beautiful parts of the story is also one of the simplest. During our time visiting Estella in Guatemala, she didn’t call Julia by her first name, but instead she used Julia’s middle name, Elizabeth. We asked why she did this and she told us it’s the name she had chosen for her. It’s just another wonderful, hidden detail in the story of our two families coming together. God is always bringing lives together to love and reflect His glory. When we parted ways with Julia’s family, she turned to me and said, “Mama, it was so special to meet my biological family and hear the story of my birth, but I am so happy I get to go home with you and Daddy.” With tears streaming down our faces, we hugged and thanked God for His perfect choices for our lives. GL Bonnie Saul Wilks is the Senior Writer at the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute, a Gateway ministry partner. Her book, Sabbath: A Gift of Time, is available at the Gateway Bookstore. Julia serves at the Gateway Grand Prairie Campus and works as an adoption counselor at Legacy Adoption Services.

PROFILE
wasn’t worth it to be away from my family for six hours at a time just to play a game that put me in a bad mood. Sacrificing that hobby to free up time for my family was well worth it. NOW THAT MY KIDS ARE A LITTLE OLDER, I recently decided it’s time for another hobby. Rather than reinvesting in golf clubs, I’ve taken up cycling. I like the community aspect of it because I usually cycle with other people. I’ve fallen a few times though. I start to tip over and can’t get my feet out of the locks. Next thing I know I’m on the ground! MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME is Fletch. I love it so much that I incorporated it into my personal email address. Three Amigos is a close second.
TODD LANE TODD LANE IS THE LEAD EXECUTIVE SENIOR PASTOR AT GATEWAY. HE AND HIS WIFE BLYNDA HAVE THREE CHILDREN.
I WAS BORN IN OMAHA, NEBRASKA, then we moved to Amarillo when I was three, so I was raised in Texas. I have Texas pride, but I’m not over-the-top about it like some people. I don’t love country music, ride horses, or hunt. I did get my first cowboy hat this year. I MET BLYNDA AT BAYLOR UNIVERSITY during my freshman year. I still remember the room I was in when I met her. The clouds parted and light shone down upon her—it was wonderful until I found out she had a boyfriend. That turned out to be a good thing because for the next three years we became good friends. I realized she had everything I wanted in a wife, and I prayed, “God, if you ever wondered who the perfect woman is for me, it’s Blynda, so would you send me someone exactly like her?” Well, He worked it all out and we ended up together.
28 NOVEMBER 2015
BLYNDA AND I HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR 20 YEARS, and during the first seven years of our marriage, we moved six times. One of those moves took us to Auckland, New Zealand. We had an incredible experience and our oldest daughter was born there. When I went to find a place to live, the realtor and I passed a harborfront apartment with a sign that said “for rent.” The realtor said, “No, that place has already been rented.” I convinced her to go back and we ended up getting it. The funny part is it cost the same as the apartment we had previously in Lewisville, but for two years we could open our windows and hear the waves crashing. BEFORE WE HAD OUR KIDS, we had a list of adventurous things we wanted to do. New Zealand is perfect for that because it’s where bungee jumping was invented. We bungee jumped, rode a jet boat, and skydived. A month and a half after skydiving, we were pregnant. ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO, I GAVE UP GOLF in the middle of a round. I was playing with Pastor Preston Morrison and some other guys, and I had done so badly on the front nine that I told them to finish without me. I went to the clubhouse, opened my laptop, and put my golf clubs for sale on Craigslist. I realized it
IN COLLEGE, MY ROOMMATE AND I wrote a song called “Crawfish Pie.” It absolutely makes no sense at all, but it tells the story of a lovesick dreamer whose love life depends on whether or not the girl could handle his crawfish pie, which is made of rutabaga, sour cream and chives, a little bit of sugar, and a whole lot of rye. Oddly enough, there’s no crawfish listed in the ingredients. I CONSIDER THE OPENING DAY of March Madness as a holiday. I set up three televisions and literally watch every game from the opening tip off to the final buzzer, which is after midnight. I’ll have a few friends over, and we’ll watch all 32 games. MICHAEL JORDAN ONCE WATCHED ME play basketball. I went to one of his basketball camps in the late ‘80s when I was in early high school. He’d watch us play and coach us. At one point, he had us do left-handed layups and watched everyone from under the basketball goal. The camp was sponsored by Nike, but I was wearing Adidas shoes, so when I did my layup he said, “Nice layup, but your shoes suck.” That was the beginning and the end of my friendship with Michael Jordan.
