WELCOME
WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS about Gateway Church is our passion for excellence. Notice I didn’t use the word “perfection.” Excellence is much different, because at Gateway it’s not about how talented you are or how well you do at a task. It’s about your heart for the Church and your passion for the kingdom of God. You see, excellence isn’t how good we do at our jobs; it’s about how good we do with our attitudes. It

truly is about the heart and attitude you bring to each task. I am so excited to be a part of a church that realizes that and asks itself, What is the Holy Spirit saying? What does He want us to do? When I was 11 years old, I was asked to sit behind a church soundboard for the first time. I was scared to death, and I was convinced it was going to be a disaster. Thankfully, I made it through that service and quickly realized how much I loved the technical aspect of running sound for the church. Embracing that scary moment and doing my best helped me realize a passion and a talent God placed inside me.

If I had run away from that moment or given a half-hearted effort, I would have never realized God’s plan for my life. Now, every week, Gateway offers opportunities for hundreds of volunteers to discover and embrace a passion or talent they never knew they had. And the reason they’re able to do so is because of Gateway’s commitment to excellence. That’s why you might see seemingly inexperienced people (sometimes young kids) operating a camera that is broadcasting around the world. We’re not teaching people how to do something technical as much as we’re teaching them how to have a heart to do their very best for the kingdom of God. There are many opportunities to serve at Gateway, and July is a great month to get started! To find one that works best for you, read Pastor Allan Kelsey’s fantastic article on discovering your identity (page 10) and visit serve.gatewaypeople.com. As you read through this issue of Gateway Life, I want to encourage you to embrace the volunteer spirit that caught me when I was 11 years old. It changed my life, and I know it will change yours!

“ABOUT 18 MONTHS AGO, I attended Dave
Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU) at Gateway. At the time, I was $27,427 in debt from school loans, a new car, and a credit card. I had reached a
point in my personal life where I was ready to settle down into my career and hopefully buy a home, but my growing debt and poor financial decisions did not leave me much room to dream about the future. I give all the glory to God for humbling my heart so that I could receive the help and instruction I needed to take the first step and attend the FPU sessions. The classes

PROUDEST MOMENT? When I became a father. God has blessed me abundantly with three great sons—Chad, Clay, and Cam—along with three beautiful stepsons—Nick, Ayden, and Riley. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? When I was seven years old, I was at a Baltimore Orioles game with my parents, and a policeman gave me a baseball he had caught. From that moment on, I wanted to be a policeman and eventually became a state trooper in Maryland. WHAT IS SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT YOU? I grew up playing baseball with Cal Ripken Jr., and I used to work for the Maryland State Police with Michael Phelps’ father. WHEN HAVE YOU BEEN MOST SATISFIED IN YOUR LIFE? When I finally realized that God was always with me, especially during my struggles, and that all He wanted from me was to open my heart to Him. This enabled me to attain peace in my life. WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE DAY? My ultimate day would be spent at a mountain lake with my beautiful wife, Dara, and my family and friends, followed by eating Maryland steamed crabs and watching any Baltimore sports team. I’m a crier, and this one got me. A girl handed me [a letter] last night on her way out of Gateway Students at the NRH Campus for the last time. (She recently moved to Houston.) My favorite thing about the letter is that it says, ‘Dear Gateway Students’ at the top. It was not written to me; it was written to a family who gave her a sense of belonging. She writes, ‘Words cannot express my gratitude. Thank you all for everything you are doing. You’re changing lives all the time. I admire your commitment to being honest, being encouraging, and including everyone. This is a great example of the power of belonging.’”

DISCOVERING YOUR TRUE IDENTITY STARTS WITH ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS by Pastor Allan Kelsey
10 JULY 2015
AVE YOU EVER ASKED YOURSELF, “WHO AM I?”
Or how about this: “What am I supposed to be when I grow up?” These questions are always in the mix during conversations about identity. In fact, they’re regarded as the two fundamental existential questions of life, and they often cause a lot of heartache and late-night pondering. To completely hone in on our identity, we must answer both questions—not just one of them. You see, it’s the “Who am I?” question combined with the “What do I do on this earth?” question that reveals a more balanced look at our identities. However, these questions are easy to complicate. I’ll prove it by asking you this trick question: “Who is Robert Morris?” If you’re like me, you’d say he is Gateway’s founding senior pastor. But there’s a problem with this answer— it’s incomplete. It only answers the second fundamental existential question (“What am I supposed to contribute to the world?”). The original question is still unanswered. I asked who he is, but our tendency is to answer what he does. See the difference? Tricky, right? I don’t believe we can answer the “who” question without talking about relationships. To understand who Robert Morris is, you would have to tell me about his parents, siblings, wife, and children. Then I would have a context for his relationships and would understand to whom he belongs. This belonging would help me more clearly understand who he is. This helps me understand his identity better than simply knowing what he does. And while we’re talking about his relationships, here’s another important one to consider—his relationship with Jesus. Telling me about his earthly relationships only answers half of the “who is he” question. I also need to know about his relationship with Jesus to fully understand his identity because when Jesus enters the picture, everything changes. Literally—everything changes. Our relationship with Jesus powerfully influences our identities because in Jesus we are new! Not reformed, refurbished, converted, or changed—we are simply and totally new! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT) says, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” In our old lives, we thought and acted a particular way and belonged (spiritually) to a particular entity. But when Jesus entered the picture, we became new. So as a result, we began to think and act a new way, and we belong to a
new person—God. In 1 Corinthians 3:23 we read, “You are Christ’s and Christ is God’s.” This means when Jesus steps into our lives, He changes the answers to our two fundamental identity questions. In fact, we need this new set of questions to explore our new identities: • Who am I in Christ? • Who is Christ in me? Our truest and most powerful identity is hidden in the answers to these questions. Who I am is now framed most strongly by the One to whom I belong. I am no longer who I was. I am now who He says I am (thank you, Cody Carnes). The more I understand Jesus, the more I understand me. But is doesn’t end there. When I ask myself who Christ is in me, I discover all Jesus has done to set me up for the strongest contribution to the world. Jesus not only radically alters my belonging, but His power and presence in me now physically affect what I am capable of. His presence awakens spiritual gifts that give me a strong contributing edge I never had before. His passion for people awakens my passions, which give me fuel to pursue what matters to Him. His gifts in me are present from birth and provide me with natural talent that sets me up for success and gives me rewards and joy when I use them. In short, because of the entrance of Jesus, my entire identity is changed. Who I am is changed, and what I contribute to the world is changed—both for the better. HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS TO FURTHER CONSIDER ABOUT YOUR IDENTITY: 1. Do you know who you are? 2. What is your strongest contribution to the world? 3. Does your current life reflect your changed identity? 4. To whom do you belong? 5. Have you explored all that Jesus has gifted to you in spiritual and physical talent? If you’re not satisfied with your answers, consider attending Freedom Ministry (freedom.gatewaypeople.com) and Equip classes (equip.gatewaypeople.com) to uncover who you are in Christ. FOUR AREAS OF OUR LIVES THAT CONSTANTLY NEED TO BE REPLENISHED by PASTOR ROBERT
12 JULY 2015
SPIRITUAL
EMOTIONAL
PHYSICAL
MENTAL
N
OT TOO LONG AGO, a friend called me and told me something that didn’t make a lot of sense. He said, “Things are going great and everything’s wonderful, but I feel like I’m under attack.” I thought, how can everything be wonderful, but you still feel like you’re under attack? But then I realized, it’s actually fairly common. Have you ever experienced that? Even when things seem to be going really well, it’s like a cloud rolled in and just sat on you one morning. As I thought about what my friend said, I remembered something that had been on my heart recently. I began to share with him how we all have four areas of our lives that get depleted if we don’t take the time to rejuvenate ourselves. Think of these four areas as tanks that must constantly be refilled. One of them is a spiritual tank. Many times we think, Well, if I just pray a little, I’ll get over this, but there are three other tanks that also have to be refilled—a physical tank, emotional tank, and mental tank. Here are a few ways I refill my tanks. SPIRITUAL TANK
Spending time praying and reading God’s Word is the best way to fill your spiritual tank. However, it’s important to remember there’s a lot of spiritual warfare going on in our lives. I don’t say that to scare you, but you need to know that, as a Christian, people are constantly speaking against you. One thing I do on a regular basis is break and sever every word or curse spoken against me, my family, and Gateway Church as well as every prayer prayed over me that’s not in accordance with God’s Word and will for my life. It’s important to remember as you pray and read your Bible that we’re in a battle. Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but … against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” PHYSICAL TANK
When you think about taking care of yourself physically, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Most of us probably think of eating right and exercising. These are important ways to fill your physical tank, but there’s one many of us forget about—rest. You might be thinking, Well, I don’t have time to rest. Some of us have difficulty sleeping even when we do have the time. If that’s you, I want to encourage you to pray about your situation, turn it over to the Lord, and ask Him to help you find ways to get some rest.
EMOTIONAL TANK
Recently, our family went to the Sea Life Aquarium in Grapevine Mills Mall. All the grandkids got to see fish and sharks, and afterward, we went out to eat. (I asked my kids if they wanted Pappadeaux or Fuddruckers, and of course, they chose Pappadeaux because they knew I was paying.) We all had a great time, and I felt refreshed. Over the years, I’ve learned that being around family and friends refreshes me emotionally. It’s important to find what works for you. MENTAL TANK
You might be surprised to know that not every book I read has to do with spirituality or leadership. In fact, I recently read a book about Quanah Parker, the Comanche Indians, and all the battles. It was fantastic! I was mentally refreshed after reading it. I also like watching funny movies. It’s just one of the things that fills my mental tank. After I told my friend about the four tanks, I said, “When we get off the phone, spend a little time in prayer, take a nap, and then have your family over and watch a funny movie.” He texted me later and said, “I can’t believe how much better I feel!” It will work for you too. You just have to find out what replenishes you. The next time you feel discouraged or like you’re under attack, take some time to fill your four tanks. You’ll be amazed at how good you’ll feel. GL

“This is my wife’s favorite chicken because it’s so tender and sweet. It doesn’t taste like Dr. Pepper— it just tastes good!”
PORK STEAKS
PASTOR MALLORY BASSHAM “My mom always grilled because she always did the cooking. Even to this day, she’s 87 years old and she’s out there at the grill. When she makes these pork steaks, they fall apart and melt in your mouth!”
BACON-WRAPPED FILET MIGNON PASTOR DAVID MOORE
“This is my wife’s favorite thing that I make, and it’s great for any occasion. The secret to this recipe is finding well-marbled steaks and only flipping them once on the grill.”
BACON-WRAPPED JALAPEÑO POPPERS PASTOR JAMES LEE
“These jalapeño poppers are savory and not as hot as you might expect, but they still have a small kick. And bacon always makes everything taste great!”
Don’t have a big, elaborate smoker? No problem! Here’s how to use a traditional charcoal kettle grill to make these recipes. To use a gas grill, only heat one side of the grill.
DIRECT HEAT
INDIRECT HEAT
Direct heat happens when the object being cooked is directly above the heat source. Indirect heat is when the object is heated by convection from the heat source.
INGREDIENTS
• Hickory or cherry wood chips or chunks soaked in water • 4 cans Dr. Pepper
• 1 3 ½- to 4-pound chicken • 1 tablespoon kosher salt • 1 teaspoon pepper
DIRECTIONS
Prepare grill or smoker for indirect heat (see diagram) and place wood chips or chunks onto charcoal (if using a gas grill, place wood chips into an aluminum foil pouch and poke holes in it with a fork; then place the pouch onto the burner). 250°F–275°F is optimal grill temperature. Use a can opener to cut the top off a Dr. Pepper can and pour half of it out. Place the chicken’s cavity onto the Dr. Pepper can so it supports the chicken in the upright position, and sprinkle salt and pepper onto the chicken. Gently set onto the grill, opposite side of the heat source. Pour another Dr. Pepper into a metal water pan and place inside the grill. Cover and grill until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh says 165°F. While the chicken is cooking, pour 2 cans of Dr. Pepper into a saucepan over medium heat on the stove. The Dr. Pepper will reduce to a syrup-like texture, which can be used to baste the chicken as it cooks.
INGREDIENTS
• 1 rack of trimmed pork spare ribs
FOR THE RUB:
• 2 tablespoons kosher salt • 2 tablespoons paprika • 1 teaspoon pepper
• 1 teaspoon garlic salt • 1 teaspoon garlic pepper
DIRECTIONS
Prepare the grill or smoker for indirect heat (see diagram) and place wood chips or chunks onto charcoal (if using a gas grill, place wood chips into an aluminum foil pouch and poke holes in it with a fork; then place the pouch onto the burner). 225°F–275°F is the best temperature range to grill ribs. Mix the rub in a small bowl and apply generously to both sides of the ribs. Place the ribs onto the grill, opposite side of the heat source. After 2 hours, wrap the ribs in aluminum foil and place back on the grill for about 2 more hours. Ribs are done when the instant-read thermometer inserted in between two center bones reads 180°F–190°F. Enjoy with your favorite barbecue sauce (or without).
Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes, and enjoy with a cold Dr. Pepper.
INGREDIENTS
INGREDIENTS
• 16 whole jalapeños, halved, deseeded, and deveined (gloves recommended, and avoid touching your eyes!) • 8 ounces of cream cheese
DIRECTIONS
• 8 slices of uncooked bacon, cut in half • Bonus ingredient: cooked pulled pork or seasoned ground beef
Prepare the grill for indirect cooking. Fill each jalapeño half with cream cheese (and pulled pork or ground beef ). Wrap with bacon and secure with toothpick. Place on grill, on opposite side of the fire, and cook until bacon is brown and crispy (30–40 minutes). Enjoy with any of the other recipes here.
• 4 large pork steaks, 1 ¼ inches thick (cut from the pork shoulder)
FOR THE SAUCE:
• 1 bottle of Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce • ¼ cup sweet pickle relish • ¼ cup brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon Lawry’s Seasoned Salt • 1 tablespoon meat tenderizer • 1 tablespoon garlic powder • ½ cup chicken stock (stock may be substituted with water)
DIRECTIONS
Prepare grill for direct heat (see diagram), and preheat oven to 275°F. Mix Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, meat tenderizer, and garlic powder in a small bowl and sprinkle on both sides of each steak. In a Dutch oven, or large casserole dish, mix sauce ingredients well and set aside. Place steaks on the grill and sear (2 minutes each side). Remove steaks from grill, transfer them to the Dutch oven, cover, and place inside preheated oven. (If using casserole dish, cover tightly with aluminum foil.) Cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
INGREDIENTS
• 4 beef tenderloin steaks (USDA Prime is best), 1 ½ inches thick
DIRECTIONS
• 4 strips of bacon • Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
Prepare the grill for direct heat (about 400°F). Wrap a strip of bacon around the sides of each filet and secure with 2 toothpicks. Sprinkle the top and bottom of each filet with Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, and place on the grill to sear for 8 minutes. Flip each filet only once and grill to desired doneness (internal temperature for well done is 155°F). Let steaks rest for 5–10 minutes and enjoy.

drive away from Nashville, Tennessee. Some might find an hour commute frustrating, but for the former lead singer of Newsong and his family, it’s given them a nice buffer from “Music City,” where some of the world’s greatest musicians make their living. “On every street corner in Nashville, there are people who sound like Mariah Carey or Michael McDonald,” says Michael. “Life has an easier pace outside the city.” The hour drive provides more than separation from the hype of the music industry—it gives Michael an opportunity to get things done. Sometimes he even comes up with song ideas. “There are certain songs I write that go away, and then there are songs that stick with me,” he says. “I wrote the melody to ‘The Love of God’ two years ago and was waiting for the right time to use it.” For three of the last four years, Michael has written and performed a song for Gateway’s Easter services. During that time, he’s learned that when Pastor Thomas calls him to start thinking about song ideas, it’s best to have something prepared. This year, he knew it was the perfect time to use that melody. “He’s a strong melody writer,”
says Thomas. “It’s pretty easy to write the story of the people of Israel waita lyric to his music because the melody ing for the Messiah and the death and almost tells a story on its own.” resurrection of Christ. ministry. Matt says, “I’ve never gotten over seeing those people saved.” Two years after moving to Berlin, Matt and Bethany heard the word “schwanger” again as they welcomed a second baby girl to the family. Life in Berlin was beginning to feel more comfortable. They had their routine, made some good friends, and were part of a challenging ministry that was changing lives in Europe. Then, God spoke to them again. Just as they prepared to have their third daughter, Matt began to hear from the Lord that he was supposed to step into a pastoral role in Texas. The decision to move back home was just as difficult as the one to move to Berlin. Five years, three babies, and several crazy experiences later, the Lankenaus returned to the States, following the same urging of the Spirit that called them to Berlin in the first place. And they came back sturdier and surer than ever before. “Berlin is where we grew roots,” Bethany says. “Where we became stronger as a couple and as a family.” GL Matt and Bethany Lankenau moved back to Texas in 2014, and he is now the pastor of Adult Ministries at the Gateway NRH Campus. They have three daughters: Lily, Ella, and Kate.

sister!” He looked at me and said, “I don’t think so.” After church I introduced myself to her and I thought, we’re really hitting it off. However, in an attempt to seem cool, I leaned against a pew, lost my balance, and fell backward. I was wedged between two pews, and someone actually had to help me out. Amazingly, we were engaged a year and a half later!
NILES HOLSINGER NILES HOLSINGER IS AN ASSOCIATE PASTOR AT THE GRAND PRAIRIE CAMPUS. HE AND HIS WIFE, LINDSAY, HAVE TWO DAUGHTERS, REESE AND DYLAN, AND A SON, CAMERON.
I WAS ONE OF GATEWAY’S FIRST EMPLOYEES. In 1999, right after I graduated from high school, my parents moved to Tennessee and I stayed in Texas. They told me, “You need to go with Pastor Robert and be at Gateway so we know you’re plugged in somewhere.” So I was the first Tech Arts person at Gateway. I’d set up the sound system and help shoot the video announcements. One week I had to go skydiving for one of Pastor Robert’s illustrations. The jumpsuit they gave me was torn around the knees, elbows, and back—like things didn’t go so well for the last guy who wore it. I thought, I hope this is the best sermon I’ve ever heard. BEFORE I MET MY WIFE, Lindsay, I met her grandfather Ed Cole, who is known as the “father of the Christian men’s movement.” One day he told me the Lord told him to teach me everything he knew about ministry. I began to work for him, traveled with him, and rarely left his side until the day he died. He was and is still one of the greatest influences of my life. I ALSO KNEW MY WIFE’S BROTHERS before I met her. In fact, I didn’t even know they had a sister because she was away at college. The first day I saw her, we were at their dad’s church, and I was standing next to Lindsay’s brother when she walked in. I asked him, “Who’s that girl?” He said, “That’s my sister.” I looked at him and I said, “I’m going to marry your

I NEVER THOUGHT I’D BE A PASTOR. Both my parents were on a church staff, which meant our lives revolved around church. When I was 5 or 6, my parents told me I was going to a slumber party. I was so excited until I found out the “slumber party” was just a late night service, and I had to go to sleep in the church nursery. In high school I became more rebellious and was quite a smart aleck. I really didn’t see the point of church. My whole life people have told me I was called to the ministry, but I had absolutely no interest in it. My life goal was to be a famous comedian or entertainer. However, when I had the revelation of how much God loved me, my heart began to change. I remembered the words my high school principal said to me: “You can use your words as a sword and destroy people, or you can use them as a scalpel and heal people.” I WAS A DALLAS MAVERICKS FUNSLINGER. We were mascots who ran around the basketball court and shot t-shirts into the crowd. Basically, we were professional goof-offs. One day, we were scheduled to work at a special event somewhere, so I went up to the arena to get the t-shirt cannon and other equipment. There was a big political rally happening, and after I got all the stuff from our locker room, I got onto an elevator with a few well-dressed gentlemen. The doors closed and I instantly recognized one of them. It was Alan Greenspan, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve at that time. There I was holding a giant bag full of balloons, wearing a backpack with a huge basketball hoop sticking out of the top, standing next to one of the most powerful men in the world. So I did what anyone would do in that situation: I asked him if he had change for a dollar. He didn’t think it was funny.
