WELCOME
WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE I ENJOY SENDING CARDS TO LOVED ONES.
There have been times I’ve purchased a greeting card for my wife, and the message in the card expressed my heart really well, and she loved it. However, there have been special occasions when I’ve written my own note, and the impact it made on her was so much greater! I’m not saying store-bought greeting cards aren’t nice—they’re great—but there’s

something special about receiving a hand-written letter. This is a perfect illustration of Gateway Worship’s heart for songwriting. Our songs are personalized expressions to God, from our hearts to His, and He loves them! I’m so thrilled about this season in Gateway Worship because we are experiencing a revival within our songwriting. In just a short time, we’ve written a crop of new, freshsounding songs to the Lord. We’ll play many of these new songs during the live recording for our next album on 5.15.15. This album will be a mile marker for where Gateway is right now, and it’s another way

of celebrating 15 years of ministry at Gateway. It reminds me of when the Israelites crossed the Jordan River and entered into the Promised Land. They took twelve stones and created a memorial so they could look back and remember what God did for them. When we do a recording, we’re creating a memorial and saying, “Remember when God did this?” I want to encourage everyone at Gateway to attend the live recording of this album. It’s going to be a night when we encounter and experience God’s presence in the greatest way possible and celebrate all He is doing. This issue of Gateway Life not only highlights the live recording but also the incredible ways God is moving in the lives of the Gateway family. You can read about all the exciting events we have this month and throughout the summer, including how your whole family can participate in Bless! (Gateway’s Global Ministries) local outreach opportunities (page 8). We’re also excited to share with you an excerpt from Pastor Robert’s newest book, Truly Free, on page 16. That’s just a small taste of the great things happening here at Gateway! I hope this issue blesses and encourages you.

“ONE MORNING RECENTLY, I had another
kidney stone flare up. [My son] Harrison was sitting on the couch, and [my husband] Thomas and I were in the kitchen deciding if he could go to work, needed to stay with me, or needed to take me to the ER. If you are unfamiliar, the pain resulting from a kidney stone can escalate quite quickly. So we were giving it a moment to see what would happen. Harrison, of course, heard it all and knew what was going on. He put down his school books, and without saying a word, he calmly got a cell phone and pulled up an old Gateway Worship album, and
“THE WORSHIP CHANGED THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE ROOM.” ‘Come Thou Fount, Come Thou King’ began to play. In the middle of pain, uncertainty, and anxiety, he knew and did the very best thing in the moment. The worship changed the atmosphere of the room. I don’t think I’ve ever told Harrison to play worship music when going through a tough time, though I’m sure I’ve done it many times throughout his life. It’s that insight, that ‘knowing’ children have, that is part of what makes them so intelligent. While we were wondering what to do, he knew what to do … and he did it.” Mary Beth Miller via Instagram and Facebook
“THIS WEEK, OUR GATEWAY GROUP
celebrated two amazing healing testimonies. We’ve been praying for two ladies for a couple of months. Tasha, with stage-four breast cancer (which spread to her liver and spine), had a scan done, and now they cannot find any cancer! Another lady, Vee, was pregnant with a little girl and in her last trimester. She was told her baby would have severe developmental problems because there was too much fluid in the baby’s brain and the ventricles were underdeveloped. She had an appointment recently with her specialist, and the baby is completely healed and healthy! Thanksgiving, praise, and honor to the Lord—our healer!” Christy Linder | via Email “LAST YEAR, GOD LAID OUT A PLAN for us
and told us we were to ‘give our way out of debt,’ which seems so contrary to the way our finite minds work. One night, I was so stressed out I kept myself up half the night going over our finances and trying to figure out how we were going to do a ‘double tithe.’ I wasn’t stressed over not wanting to do it—I was excited about it! I was stressed because I couldn’t figure out how we were going to do it. As I laid there with numbers just rolling through my head, I just felt the Lord tell me, ‘Stop! Just trust me.’ So I gave it to Him and an overwhelming peace came over me, and I fell asleep. The next morning, God spoke to me that we were to begin our double tithe in January 2015.
Since we started, we have received raises and bonus checks out of nowhere. One day my boss dropped a bonus check on my desk and said he appreciates all I do for the company and that our company has tripled! Amazingly, 75 percent of that growth happened since we began tithing! Through our obedience, even my company is being blessed!” Mathew Dujka | via Email
TESTIMONIES FROM BLESS A LIFE:
“IN A RECENT SERVICE, a couple came forward for prayer. Several weeks ago, someone bought their gas at 7-Eleven and gave them a Gateway Grand Prairie ‘Bless A Life’ card. They said, ‘If this church has people like that, we can trust them with our marriage.’ So they just showed up for a walk-in counseling appointment. I met with them and prayed with them. The husband just started a new job—something they had been praying for. They are so grateful!” Steve Thompson | via Email

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? I pulled out from a gas pump with the gas hose still in the car I was driving … and I proceeded to drive two miles down the road with it hanging out of my gas tank. A person finally got my attention at an intersection. PROUDEST MOMENT? Sky diving. Not to overplay the significance, but watching a door slide open on a little prop plane and looking at the ground 10,000 feet below … and leaping … was a moment of conquering fear that I really believe has helped me conquer fear in many other areas of my life. SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I’m very competitive, which is why I quit golf. WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR LEGACY TO BE? That I first influenced my family, and then others, toward God and their purpose. WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD? Quick wit and funny “failed attempt” videos.

“MY HUSBAND AND I HAD BEEN PRAYING
about the Heart for the Kingdom amount we were to give this year. I had a number in mind, and as I was praying a few days later, a higher number was given to me. The digits were the same, but another zero was added. A few days later, I asked my husband if he had been given a number yet, and he said yes. Then he asked if I had. I asked what his number was, and he was hesitant to give it to me so we began the guessing game! Finally, I said, ‘Let’s both write our numbers down, then at the same time show each other.’ We did, and the number was exactly the same, to the penny! That was our confirmation. There was a sense of excitement in both of us. We were also kind of shocked. What a neat experience. The very next day at work we were notified of a bonus. The bonus was four times the amount we were told to give!” Brenda Ward | via Email
the Blessed Life concept was something we learned as we grew, not as we started out. But our oldest son, Gabriel (15), has always had a giving heart. He has wanted to give food, clothes, and his lunch, at times, to kids who need it. He would go without so others could have. This February for his birthday, he received some money. One Wednesday, during The Blessed Life series at Gateway Students, he felt led to give it all. It was amazing because he did it in secret. He didn’t tell anyone, including us. Yesterday, he received a gift in the mail from a grandparent. It was a gift card with the exact amount he gave a month ago. That is when he told us what he did. I am thrilled and amazed to see God working, not just in adults’ lives, but kids also. Thank you Gateway Church for not just teaching us ‘big people’ but the younger ones as well!”

for a few months now and struggling financially. I’ve been living with my mom for about four months, and she recently told me she was moving to Florida, so finding a place to live had me worried. I had been debating and hesitating about going up for prayer because I know God will take care of me and I trust Him, but I’ve just been so stressed lately. So, I went up for prayer at the end of the Sunday 9:00 am service asking for God to place me somewhere or show me where I need to be in my life right now. Not my will, but His be done. The wonderful lady who prayed for me, Melissa, said such a beautiful prayer and gave me such sound advice for perseverance and trusting in God. Afterward, she told me if I ever found myself homeless or in need that I could contact her, and she meant it! I couldn’t believe it! Those words took such a burden off my shoulders knowing I had someone who would be willing to help me. Then, she and her husband handed me some money! GAME ON! Competition and community play well together with Gateway Sports by Daniel Hopkins
10  MAY 2015
T
HERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT HEARING THE SEASON’S
first clank of a metal bat knocking a softball deep into the outfield. It’s the unofficial sound of summer, and it’s one of the many sounds of community here at Gateway. With more than 500 men and women involved in our softball leagues, we have enough players to fill the rosters of the entire MLB American League. That’s not to mention the players involved in other sports here at Gateway. In all, we have nearly 1,700 athletes of all athletic abilities, both male and female, ages 16 and up. Gateway Sports has become a great opportunity to reach people who wouldn’t normally walk into a church service. “We care so much about sports because people care about sports,” says James Lee, the men’s associate pastor who helps oversee sports at Gateway. “It’s one of the easiest entry points to our church. Some people may not want to attend church service or a small group, but they’ll run onto a softball field.” However, Pastor James is quick to tell you that just because it’s church sports doesn’t mean the competition is weak. “Our goal is not to lower the competition level,” says James. “We want to raise the community level.”
SOFTBALL
One of the ways the softball teams maintain their level of competition is by joining with city leagues rather than forming their own campus-specific leagues. Other than the Grand Prairie Campus, which has its own league, all Gateway campuses follow this format. Not only does it create more opportunities for outreach, but it keeps the players sharp.
GOLF
Gateway’s golf leagues are all campus-specific, and there’s an added element of fun. In the summer, each campus facilitates its own six-week league, and at the end there is an all-church tournament to determine Gateway’s top golfers. The competition is tough, but everyone has fun together.
FLAG FOOTBALL
The newest addition to Gateway Sports—flag football—is already gaining popularity. In the spring of 2014, 11 teams comprised of 137 players made a huge impact in Southlake’s co-ed flag football league. In fact, the city didn’t have a league until Gateway created the demand for it. When Gateway
Sports asked to use the city’s facilities for games, the city offered to start and operate a flag football league. Now, there are 20 teams with 250 players—70% of whom have become connected with Gateway outside of our sports program.
“OUR GOAL IS NOT TO LOWER THE COMPETITION LEVEL. WE WANT TO RAISE THE COMMUNITY LEVEL.” Seeing people get connected to God is the main goal of Gateway Sports, and they are working hard to come up with more opportunities for athletes at Gateway. For example, later this year they will launch a basketball league and relaunch Gateway Outdoor Adventures, which will include river rafting, rock climbing, hiking, and more. But as the sports community expands, the main goal has always stayed the same. “We’re not a sports ministry—we’re a sports community,” says James. “For us, getting people connected to God through a Gateway Group or some other way is a touchdown.” GL For more information on Gateway Sports spring and summer registration dates, visit sports.gatewaypeople.com.

M
OST MORNINGS, I begin my day by meeting God at McDonald’s. When I first committed my life to Christ and began to develop my relationship with Him, I heard a lot about the importance of having a quiet time to read God’s Word, meditate on it, and talk to Him in prayer. As my mentors and other believers I respected talked about their own quiet time, I realized that it could be as distinctive as the people doing it; some had their quiet time in the morning, while others did it during the day or before they went to bed. The length of time varied along with the format over the years. I’ve come to understand that the nature of a “quiet time” reflects each person’s unique friendship with God. And in friendships, method and form always take a back seat to individual connections of the heart. At its core, a quiet time is a time set apart to connect with God as our Father, Savior, and Friend. So, I worked to establish my own quiet time, but struggled with the quality and consistency of my connection with God. I found if I didn’t start my day with a designated time to connect with God, it didn’t happen. Unless I put it first in my day, I was inconsistent in making it happen at all. If I stayed up late, I would ignore my alarm and sleep until the last minute, bypassing my quiet time that morning. When I forced myself to get up and go into the other room, I would be asleep in my chair before I finished the first verse or sentence of my prayer. The connection with God I was seeking was replaced by additional sleep. I also needed structure in my quiet time. On days when my quiet time actually took place, it was more of a dutiful obligation than an exciting aspect of my growing relationship with God. It didn’t seem very productive to let my Bible flop open randomly as a method for determining where I should read that day. Nor did I feel that my prayers accomplished much when they lacked a guided focus but
were, instead, the result of a manufactured list of items to be covered. In short, my quiet time was boring and lacked both focus and purpose. Over the years, my friend Jimmy Evans has often talked about how he journals as a part of his quiet time, and he encouraged me to do the same. Out of the frustration and dissatisfaction I felt, I asked him to tell me about what he did with journaling. He explained that journaling gave structure to his time with God; it enabled him to talk with God and record what God was saying to him. I was so desperate for something different I could do consistently and joyfully that would help me find quality time with God that I decided to give it a try. When I first attempted to journal as part of my quiet time, it amounted to nothing more than a diary with God’s name on it. I made myself sit down and tell God, by writing in my “God Diary,” all that had happened the previous day and how I felt. If I missed a day, I felt I had to remember everything that had taken place so I could record it in my journal. It was laborious, lifeless, and even worse than the nonsystem I used previously. This method of journaling did not resolve my quiet time issues with inconsistency, lack of systematic Bible reading, and nonfocused prayer. I remained frustrated but still pushed forward determined to find an answer. I eventually came to realize I first needed to go away from my house and job responsibilities to a place where I could focus on God. Secondly, I needed a format that really helped deepen my relationship with God. That’s where McDonald’s came into the picture. As I sought to find and connect the pieces of an effective quiet time, I started looking for a place to go that was open early in the morning—preferably a place I could go even when I was out of town. McDonald’s became that place. When I first began, breakfast wasn’t my favorite meal of the day,
“The nature of a ‘quiet time’ reflects each person's unique friendship with God.”
GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM 13
but that changed as I deepened my friendship with God through a consistent quality time with Him. The second missing piece I needed for my quiet time was a format to follow. I found the Victory Bible Reading Plan—a small pamphlet that enables the reader to completely read through the Bible in a year—and incorporated it into
“What had once been difficult and lifeless was now powerful and engaging!” my quiet time routine. I liked this particular plan because it gave me a chapter in Psalms or Proverbs, two chapters in the Old Testament and one chapter in the New Testament to read each day of the year. I also changed my approach to journaling from simply documenting the events of my life in my “God Diary” to
writing my prayers to God and recording the things I felt He was saying to me about my family and situations I was dealing with. What had once been difficult and lifeless was now powerful and engaging! I started developing this process over 20 years ago. When I first began having a quiet time, I thought I had to legalistically enforce it to be effective; however, as with all things, legalism killed my time with God. My time is now a reflection of my friendship with Him. If I miss a day, the world doesn’t end; I just miss spending time with my God and my Best Friend, and I come back to it as quickly as I can. The basic outline I follow is simple: I start my time with God by reading the Bible. Usually, I take a verse from my reading and use it to begin my journal entry for the day. My prayer follows a simple format. I express my love and worship to God. I affirm my commitment to Him and surrender to Him. I pray for my needs and concerns as I listen and record the comments He impresses on my heart as we speak (communicating with God is two-way communication). I acknowledge my sin and forgive people who have hurt me. GL Conversations with God: A Personal Prayer Journal by Pastor Tom Lane will be available this fall in the Gateway Bookstore.
Do you have a place and a format that helps you build and deepen your relationship with God? If not, here are a few steps to help you get started:
1
Find a place to meet with God.
14 MAY 2015
2
Select a Bible reading plan that helps you read through the entire Bible.
3
Meditate on God’s Word in addition to reading it. It’s the only book that reads you as you read it.
4
Use a journal to write your prayers and record God’s words to you.
5
Enjoy the time as a part of developing your relationship with God.
SONG STORY
SOMETIMES INSPIRATION COMES WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT. For
Pastor Levi Smith, it hit while he was driving home after a long weekend of leading worship. “When you’ve been playing music for hours, it’s nice to have a little quiet,” says Levi. But even with the car stereo turned off, a drum rhythm played in his head. “A lot of times I’ll get more inspiration from music rather than lyrics, so the whole song is centered around the drum beat,” says Levi. “By the time I got home, I had written a verse and the chorus.” Several weeks later, inspiration struck again, and he wrote the song’s bridge, featuring its most powerful melody and lyrics: “We cry out / You alone are holy / You alone are good.” With the song complete, Levi introduced it to the Grand Prairie Campus, and soon after that the Frisco Campus began to play it. “When we sing the bridge, it’s a really special moment,” says Levi. Over time, as the song has been played, the feedback he received from the worship leaders and church members is what he knew all along—the bridge is everyone’s favorite part. Levi took the feedback to heart, and brought the song to a co-writing session with songwriter Michael Farren.
“When I played him the song, he quickly caught onto the spirit of the bridge,” says Levi. “The presence of God came into the room, and the vision for rewriting the song became clear.” Within 90 minutes, they emerged with a new version of “Undone,” and now the bridge has become the central part of the song. The drumbeat that originally inspired “Undone” is gone, but the spirit of the song is stronger than ever. The opening lyrics say it all: “We are undone / In the presence of the God who has no end / lost in wonder / in the weight and beauty of Your holiness.” “The song is really about our collective passion to connect with God’s presence,” says Levi. “One of the reasons we gather every weekend is because God is real, His presence is real, and the things we experience together in His presence are amazing! I hope this song allows us to cry out and declare the greatness and holiness of our God.” For more information on Gateway Worship, visit gatewayworship.com.

GOOD NEWS AHEAD
An excerpt from Pastor Robert’s new book Truly Free. IN JOHN 10:1 JESUS SAID, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” The sheepfold is where the sheep are, the believers. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy (v. 10), and he can’t get in by the door. So he tries to get in some other way. He’ll do it by any means made available to him. Let’s say one night you’re upstairs in your bedroom, and you hear your doorbell ring. You go downstairs and peek through the peephole and see a robber there. I mean, this robber is clearly a robber. He has a stocking cap over his face with eyeholes cut in it and everything.
16 MAY 2015
He’s carrying a sawed-off shotgun, and it’s pointed straight at your door. He’s carrying an empty sack that he clearly wants to fill once he gets inside. He may even be holding a big sign that blatantly states, “Danger! I’m a robber. I’m going to harm you.” What would you do? Well, undoubtedly you’d barricade your door. You’d get help. You’d phone the police. You’d run upstairs and get the baseball bat you hide under your bed so you could be prepared for the worst. What wouldn’t you do? That’s pretty clear, isn’t it?
You wouldn’t open the door just a crack so you could look at the robber more closely. You wouldn’t have a conversation with him so you could learn more of his evil ways. You wouldn’t shake his hand while he stood on your doorstep, and you certainly wouldn’t invite him inside your house so he could sit in your living room for a while and get comfortable.
“INSTEAD OF RESISTING THE DEVIL, THEY CRACK THE DOOR OPEN AND INADVERTENTLY INVITE HIM INSIDE.” Guess what? That’s exactly what far too many people do when it comes to the demonic thief outside their doors. Instead of resisting the devil (James 4:7), they crack the door open and inadvertently invite him inside. Let’s say a Christian drinks too much alcohol and becomes drunk. Then, tragically, she climbs into her car, begins driving, and causes an accident, maybe even a death. Does the alcohol own that woman? No, she’s still a believer. She’s still owned by God. But she was clearly under the influence of that alcohol. The alcohol caused her to do something totally out of character. She harmed people. She harmed herself. When she consumed too much alcohol, she opened the door for evil to influence her. Or let’s say a man looks at pornography. He’s just opened a door to the enemy, and the enemy will push through the crack to get in. The enemy will not own the man, but he will influence the man. Normally, the man is a good husband and father. But with the enemy influencing him, he may wind up doing something totally out of character that shocks him and everybody around him. At this point you may be starting to worry, thinking you have a problem with spiritual oppression. If you do, I don’t want you to feel guilt or shame about it. I don’t want you even to feel fear. The good news is that you can be free from the oppression. Satan will try to make you think that only other people can get free but you can’t. He’ll suggest that you’ve sinned too greatly or that you’re a weak person. But all of that’s a lie. Satan does not have the power to stop you from coming to Jesus. You may have given evil a stronghold in a certain area, but Jesus always offers a way to be free.
Yes, demons are real. And yes, they really can influence, control, oppress, and possess people. But here’s the great news: Jesus really does set people free! In Luke 10:17, Jesus sent seventy of His disciples out in the Galilean countryside to minister to people. The disciples came back excited with this report: “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” Jesus didn’t act surprised. Instead, He offered them this victorious reply: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (vv. 18–19). Jesus was not encouraging His disciples to go out and flaunt a spiritual ability to step on snakes and other poisonous creatures. He was responding to their report about the demons. Through the ministry of Jesus, demons were made obedient, submissive slaves. Jesus didn’t end it there. He said, “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven” (v. 20). That’s always the main focus of any spiritual discussion: Jesus offers freedom and life. He is always the One we want to lift up in praise. He’s always the One who gets the glory.
“THAT’S ALWAYS THE MAIN FOCUS OF ANY SPIRITUAL DISCUSSION: JESUS OFFERS FREEDOM AND LIFE. HE IS ALWAYS THE ONE WE WANT TO LIFT UP IN PRAISE. HE’S ALWAYS THE ONE WHO GETS THE GLORY.” Would you let me pray for you? I’m praying that if you’re feeling unsettled in this area, you would realize freedom is offered to you by Jesus. He always cares for you. He always loves you. His arms are always open wide for you to come home. Pray this with me: Lord, You are great. In You there is all power and authority. I need to get free. I’m being oppressed. I’m

in bondage, and I want to quit making excuses for it. And I don’t want to be afraid of it. Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ, please set me free. Amen. I remember when I first realized I was in bondage, I was highly concerned. But the more I thought about it, and the more I went through God’s Word, the more hope I had because I realized I could get free. Here’s a promise from God’s Word: “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free” (John 8:36 nlt). That’s great news for us. But it’s a process. And we need to close the doors and windows of our house to evil. GL

PROFILE
ALENA: I was so disappointed when I found out we weren’t third cousins because I had thought, this is going to link us together forever! DAVID: Little did you know … [laughs] ALENA: David left Pittsburgh to go to Christ For The Nations (CFNI) in 2000, and we stayed really close friends (long distance phone calls were an expensive thing back then). It wasn’t until I came to CFNI a year later that I realized he liked me. When I got to school, it didn’t take long for me to find out he had told all the guys that I was “taken” already and that I would be his wife! Needless to say, that made me pretty mad and was the basis for a lot of fighting that year! He brought me flowers every week, but I kept saying, “It’s not an option.” Then one day, I answered the door and he was standing there. Suddenly, it was like a light switch flipped on, and I had major feelings for him!
DAVID AND ALENA MOORE DAVID IS A PASTOR OF WORSHIP, AND ALENA IS AN ASSOCIATE PASTOR OF WORSHIP. TOGETHER THEY FOUNDED GATEWAY GENERATE (GATEWAY STUDENTS WORSHIP MINISTRY). THEY HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR EIGHT YEARS AND HAVE ONE SON.
DAVID: We both grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but when I was young, my family moved to West Virginia so my dad could pastor a church. We moved back to the Pittsburgh area a few years later, and I met Alena when we were both fifteen. ALENA: When we met, I was attending the big church in our area. David’s dad pastored a smaller church down the street. His church didn’t have a big youth group so David came to mine, and he played guitar in the youth band. I played the tambourine and sang. I found out David lived really close to me, so we started riding to church together and became best friends. I would call him to hang out, and within minutes he would be on my doorstep, freshly showered and smelling of Eternity cologne. He liked me, but I had no idea. DAVID: Soon after we became good friends we were talking about our family histories, and we discovered we each had a person with the same name in our family trees. We didn’t know if this person was the same guy, but if he were, it would make Alena and me third cousins. That discovery was the worst day of my life! I did a little more research and found out they were two different people, and I was so relieved.
28 MAY 2015
DAVID: When I came to Gateway, my first impression was how much I loved listening to Pastor Robert. Before I was on the worship team, I would ride to Gateway with some of the worship team members who were also were coming from CFNI. I’d sit through all the Sunday services—not because I had to but because I could. It was great and still is. ALENA: Honoring the Sabbath is really important to us. A dream day would be having a picnic at a park or going for a walk as a family. We love playing with our boy, David Liam. He’s the sweetest boy in the world and brings us so much joy! I’ve actually googled “Can you love your child too much?” DAVID: We do a lot of dancing at home. We’ll put on some Paul Simon and dance around the house. We love getting snow cones and going to the pool in the summertime or the Fort Worth Zoo on a sunny day, and our favorite destination is the beach. ALENA: My favorite meal is David’s filet mignon with cheesy potatoes. He does all the work! It’s so good that if I could pick any meal in all of Dallas for my birthday, that’s what I would want.
